I have a theory about this topic that I've never expressed to any of my friends because it would make them really upset at me, but I think it's a complex issue that revolves around someone's self-narrative in real life. Most people won't admit it, but I'm pretty sure if you interrogated them they'd tell you that deep down they believe they're smart/strong/important/etc and basically believe in themselves as a main character. These kinds of people can play games and have no issue distancing themselves from the characters they create because whatever story exists in the game is less meaningful in their mind than the one they already feel throughout their life. They're not going to start daydreaming about being an elf girl with a fat ass because they think the body and person they already are can (potentially, if they really tried and unlocked their potential) be cooler and more attractive than an elf girl with a fat ass.The issue is if you don't believe in yourself subconsciously, deep down. If you lack the inherent belief that you're a main character, then you look towards other stories for inspiration. The human heart craves this kind of story, it wants to be important, even if you also genuinely believe you're a disgusting loser. If you find another story that feels compelling enough it can become the one you cling to instead, and you'll be drawn towards finding that story everytime the opportunity presents itself.I know I just typed a lot of words to say something that probably sounds obvious so excuse me for rambling but it's my 2 cents on this topic.
