I've recently played System Shock for the first time in my life. I've played enhanced edition and completed it twice back to back. I've tried playing remake and couldn't make it past medical, because it looks and feels like absolute shit to play. How do people recommend it is beyond me.

This is the same area in the original game. The lack of visual clarity in remake is just staggering. The 5 - 10 seconds long unskippable "cutscenes" whenever you pick up a new item or an audio log, unlock a door, use med or recharge station etc are infuriating. What were they thinking?

I recently started playing the remake. It's honestly damn good! I seldom get outright hooked to vidya no more, but last night I realized that the sun was rising after I beat the Storage area.

I did beat the OG 1-2 decades ago, btw.

SS1 is barely an imsim. It's closer to just Doom than anything that later defined the genre. You don't have much for builds, customization, story choices or different ways to approach a problem. It's very much on par with Bioshock in terms of how much of an imsim it is. SS2 is through and through an immersive sim thoughbait.

Even if the mechanics aren't the same across every single game, it's still the design of the levels, the open-ended way you can approach things, the lack of hand holding, etc. that I enjoyed about it and I just want more games like this. It just sucks there's such a lack of them since most people just don't care about these kind of games anymore and there's no money to be made making them.

I feel like the remake was made by and for the people who thought that System Shock 2 is what System Shock was originally intended to be, even though they are two vastly different games. System Shock is an action game, the second one is survival horror.

I don't know, I love the shit out of SS2, and I didn't enjoy remake at all. I have no nostalgia for 2 either, I played it in the 2010s for the first time because back then, I had no PC, just consoles. Like many modern big games, the remake is way too overdesigned and tries to copy the worst aspects of triple A games.

Pretty sure I had the same reaction OP. The remake just made me feel like I might as well just play the original version instead. The idea probably would've been more alluring if it hadn't been in development for 3 years longer than I cared to wait on it.

I don't know where you got that idea,
but I do prefer SS2, so maybe that's why I like the Shock 1 remake.

I was honestly expecting way more straight-forward shooty-tootin' and mission objective markers this day and age. Instead, I found myself reading through the emails to get some kind of gist for where to go next more than once, on top of making lots of map markers.
The fact that you can still waltz through half the game with your Level 0-1 upgrades and the pipe, ignoring most of teh plot, is very commendable.

One more praise:
I didn't expect actual dismemberment and gibbing in a modern Unreal Engine game!

My main issues with the game is map clutter and running without the sensor mod makes it too easy to miss critical items.

Forgot to mention what they did with the music, changing it from lively action tracks to generic sounding ambience. If the remake was made by people who played and preferred the original System Shock, it would've resembled something like Doom on modern source ports.
