Releasing a single game that has a roster that can be kept current without having to update the game itself seems like an easy pathway.It would probably be the best for that "Legacy Edition" bullshit EA was doing, since they were already releasing an outdated game with some updated character models to reflect the current team rosters.

They then very quickly lower the effective price of the game through sales (50% off late November, 60% off Christmas sales, 70% off in March) to grab a good amount of the F2P-target players from lower minimum wage countries (many countries which are massive football fans, like in South America). It sounds like a risky strategy (because, shouldn't everbody just wait a month or two to pay half price for the game?) but the model works because of the way Ultimate Team is structured. The game is basically a rat race of building up your team, so the faster you start playing, the more resources you'll have throughout the year. It's basically the difference between starting Tarkov at the start of a wipe vs mid-wipe.
