Why haven't sports games gone live service? Releasing a single game that has a roster that can be kept current without having to update the game itself seems like an easy pathway.

It would probably be the best for that "Legacy Edition" bullshit EA was doing, since they were already releasing an outdated game with some updated character models to reflect the current team rosters.

No way to generate recurring revenue

You can't sell cosmetics for sports teams, since the licensee doesn't control the branding
>>
>>743389613
Because they do both.
>>
>>743389710
they already solved that with cards

Why change what works. Browns will buy Fifa every year. Blacks will buy NBA2K every year. White trash will buy Madden every year. And middle class trash will buy PGA every year.
>>
>>743389613
They do both.
Also in the online multiplayer mode that everyone plays, you don't even get to keep the players you get from the gacha. They're limited use.

They're basically seasonal live service gacha games
>>

Because retards still play full price every year on top of the stupid gambling shit to rebuild their team every years. Sports ball gamers are some of the biggest cash cows in the gaming industry.

EA has very seriously considered going F2P with Fifa/EAFC to maximize the Ultimate Team live service revenue but the reality is, a ton of people unironically buy the $70 box every year to play a few hours of kickoffs with their friends. They'd be throwing a way a lot of money. So they just do both, running the live service model on top of yearly full-priced releases. They then very quickly lower the effective price of the game through sales (50% off late November, 60% off Christmas sales, 70% off in March) to grab a good amount of the F2P-target players from lower minimum wage countries (many countries which are massive football fans, like in South America).

It sounds like a risky strategy (because, shouldn't everbody just wait a month or two to pay half price for the game?) but the model works because of the way Ultimate Team is structured. The game is basically a rat race of building up your team, so the faster you start playing, the more resources you'll have throughout the year. It's basically the difference between starting Tarkov at the start of a wipe vs mid-wipe.

Wouldn't that only make Argentina mad, though? The UK are the ones who have the high ground on that matter currently.

It's not about solving anything or creating customer comfort. It's about maximizing profits and the best way to do this is the create a "new" game every year and resell it to the retards.
This is how it works as long as it sells millions of copies. If people stop buying these games (which they don't), they would need to think about some other route of delivery.
Retards get what they deserve.

That is a good question though. Maybe yearly releases are better for sports games. And fuck Engerlend KWAB
>>
>>743389613
it's more profitable to realease practically the same game for 60€ than it is to just provide some roster update license for a cheaper price. Buying these things yearly is stupid anyway, I get having one in your household I had fun times playing against my brother and friends on NHL2003.
>>
>>743389613
Because sports "games" are for faggots, boomers and retards and should never fucking exist. Seriously, that's the only group of people who are lapping that shit up like liquid cow shit. The sooner all three groups all fucking die off, the sooner sports "games" as a whole will also end up goin' to the goddamn grave. Fuck sports "games", fuck the boomers, faggots and retards who play them and FUCK EA and other sportsfags companies that "make" them.

FIFA boomers have been clowned on by EA since 2010 by the way. It's in the game.

because retards pay $70 for them anyway
modern sports games are unironically more predatory than most gacha. which is a shame cause older sports games could get really good. everyone loves nba jam for a reason

because they still sell 10+ million copies every single year before microtransactions. the MP aspect, just like COD, means nobody wants to be left behind to play with single game autists or be dropped by their friends. it's all FOMO. in the ps2 days you could clearly see each edition building on top of one another. the 360 era stripped out features just to get games ready for the early launch and build back the features one by one. the ps4 era to now it's all the same bullshit with the same bugs every year.
>>

it is live service, it just also sells copies of the base games. they double dip because the fans are retards who let themselves get milked twice

>>
>>743389613
Sportsfags are willing to pay $70 every single year PLUS microtransactions via Ultimate Team, NBA 2ks VC, etc. Its basically the best of both world for publishers.
>>
>>743401801
there is no genre of video game on the market today that is more gameplay-dense than sports games. no hours of cut scenes, no 'walk and listen to dialogue', from start to finish you are always engaged with the gameplay mechanics.

'gamers' don't like to hear this because they associate sports with "the mean jock who dated the girl I liked in high school", so they try and convince themselves that sports are for meatheads and they "totally could've done it if I wanted to but I'm just too smart to play". it reeks of narcissism.
>>
>>743419715
Except the only problem is that the actual sports exists and it still baffles me that there's a market for it that's only kept alive by boomers, third-world folks, Europoors, and b non-white people and such. I'd tell them to get outside and touch grass, but knowing them, they'd just have panic attacks and sob and whatnot and wouldn't know where to begin and such.
>>
>>743389613
Because they only sell to the same retards anyways. Anyone with intellect understands it's a scam and the games never improve in any way. Tried the latest one for "free" with paid online and it played the same as the game a decade earlier
>>
>>743389613
they have gacha pulls AND they get to sell a new game every year for 70 bucks. Its a win win for them. The pulls dont carry over to the next game by the way, so the average retard is probably giving 300 bucks a year to EA
