You start with couple of trait options by default and you need to find (buy) key items to unlock more options. The bounty tickets and the area tickets are where you get a lot of them from. They key items are not consumed so you only need to buy it once to be able to add that trait to every single pal if you really want.

Murmur island is such a perfect base location. Quiet, peaceful, pretty limestone and natural barriers that don't obstruct the nice view.

I underestimated how many eggs they were going to lay. Each one is worth 19.9k gold unless it's an alpha which I think is double. This is pretty click heavy though so I'm not sure if I would actually recommend it until you have the much better incubators. Still fun breeding pals for coin though.
