What am I trying to do on this screen?
>>743394039Cars have gears, and you can represent those gears versus their power output. You are just choosing how LONG or SHORT each gear is. What this means is you are choosing how long you are staying on each gear, relative to the power you're outputting. You can imagine a track that's a giant oval, so you want long gears so you can max out your top speed. But a track might simply be a series of tight corners, so you want shorter gears.
Set a fan speed curve.
>>743394363nta, why is that tweakable and just some mathematically optimal value?
>>743394521>and justand not just*
>>743394521You would have to make a mathematically optimal value for each and every single track and each and every single vehicle. If you change your vehicle, like say add a new muffler or turbo, that changes things and you would need a new mathematically optimal value. So yes, you can kinda look up fan guides that just say "make the gear ratio x for perfection", but it will only be perfect for a specific track and a specific vehicle.
>>743394039I don't think you want a gear's range to peak above the power band because once it does you're just wasting power.
>>743394706>like say add a new muffler or turbo, that changes thingswhy? and how?i can kinda understand the track argument, for example it might be optimal to "overwork" the gear on that specific section just to avoid switching (is that correct btw?)but muffler and turbo make no sense
>>743394039Each line represents what a gear is capable of. The X axis is the vehicle's speed and the Y axis is the engine's RPM. The longer the lines are on the X axis, the higher your top speed is but the longer it takes to get there. Long lines are good for highways and such, while shorter lines are good for more technical courses since you'll be slowing down more often and you'll benefit from being able to get back up to speed quickly
>>743394039Something with numbers looks like
>>743394979>but muffler and turbo make no senseThey change your overall BHP output, which is really just your potential MAXIMUM.For instance, deck out a car with stage 4 turbo, then everything else, so it has 799 BHP. Sounds great? But that's only your engine's theoretical maximum output, not neccesarily antying you'll ever get.So take your 799 BHP car, and set the gears really short. You'll only get a fraction of that. Buuuuuuuuuut if you have a stage 4 turbo, it's often that it makes most of its power right at the end, meaning maybe you should downgrade to a stage 2 or 3? So change the BHP you get a new potential ideal ratio. And theoretical max BHP might mean nothing if you can never reach it. Again, it's all track dependent. A 500 BHP car may do better than a 799 BHP car on a certain course with a certain setup. A player may unintentionally upgrade a race car and turn it into a dragster and then never get the best out of a car.
>>743394979More power output due to higher performing parts changes the calculation for what would be "optimal" also it will still be track dependent like anon said. Track with lots of curves and you want short gears to keep acceleration up after the curve and for long straight tracks you want long gears for max top speed but slower acceleration. Basically balancing acceleration with top speed and you might want different settings for different tracks
>>743394521i play rally games and depending on your driving style you still might want to have shorter/longer gearsthere's so many tracks to go through so it's better to know what works for you so you can get through one fast without dying compared to what a computer could do running the same track over and overjust my opinion
>he doesn't drive every car stock
>>743394039You want long ratios on tracks with lots of straightsYou want short ratios on tracks with lots of turnsThere’s probably more specifics regarding real life ratios but for games, that’s all you really need to know. Of course some cars will just do better with shorter ratios than longer ratios and vice versa.
>>743395528>constantly redlines and can only go 150 MPH despite having a killer turboIt's painful. I understand why (the premise of time attack mandates the fastest corner exits possible) but it doesn't make it a good drive until you stretch the gears out a lot.
>>743395717Honestly I am like >>743395528, you are right that it is almost always better but I just can't get into tweaking trannys all day.
>>743394039>final drive slider>short gears: blast through the gears quickly (quick acceleration) but also run out of top speed because it's geared short>long gears: plenty to get you to top speed but take an eternity to get anywhere, god forbid you need to get back on the throttle after taking a corneras for what is the magic number for your car, you're going to need to pick someone else's brain
