>not having fun from the get go
I started playing fighting games when I had to import the latest one in japanese (which was inevitably about to be replaced in japan by a new version) and all I had was delay netcode and some 144p JP arcade footage to learn combos and character info from.
Nowdays there are scores of shitty players and great players to match with so no one is stuck facing one guy who is extremely invested in the game, this is true for basically every game with even 200-300 players on steam.
Actually look for communities and people to play, actually PRACTICE a bnb and you'll be amazed how quickly you can start doing it in matches.
Its a steep climb for some people, but fighting games are great once you find one you truly love.

it's called having friends of the same skill level

So don't play competitive games. They're all significant time investments if you want to get good.

Just play the good ones like Melee and Soul Calibur. Oh wait those died a long time ago.

Pro players play one game exclusively because they know getting good is extremely time consuming, so they dont bother. Your "just practice brah" mentality is not feasible for most gamers which is why the fighting game community is a dying breed.

I think a problem with fighting games is that the skill floor is too high so it sucks to play at low skill levels. with fps and rts you can be shit but as long as you're playing against other shitters you can still have fun because no one knows what they're doing. with fighting games you need a lot of knowledge and skill just to do basic shit like get in on someone spamming fireballs or have your buttons actually connect, so even if you and your opponent both suck it feels bad playing because nothing is working right.

Notice how no one ever says what game they're trying to learn so they don't come off as a complete retard.

I actually do get mad when I play bad players.
And I redirect that anger at myself when I'm losing against slightly better players.
Sometimes I hate both my opponent and myself if I'm losing against a bad player, but I hate myself more because I'm losing.
I'm an angry person.

I feel like fighters are just very much a place where being a cunt is both optimal and unpunished. Typically shooters make sure the next game has less incentive towards toxic play than the last, and RTS typically do not encourage rudeness as their identity. Most places usually treat having a bad time as part of the community experience (Dark Souls games, Monster Hunter games, shmup games, tetris, chess, etc.) but generally they still try to make something like "being bad is fine everyone is participating and that's what counts" but MMOs, MOBAs, and fighting games, have this thing where being not a top-tier player is frowned upon.

Fighting games are just stricter the more you improve, even at high level you make more than 1 mistake you threw the match. You have to trust your opponent thinks you are good enough at the game to not punish your mistakes, so you can actually have a bit of neutral. Top level play is just TV static read into a controller input total shimmy back and forth gibberish hoping someone gets the pixel that wins you the game on hit confirm or you have enough meter to not be combo'd to death by gimmick comeback mechanic that game has. Not only can noobs not even touch the game, they will be abused for doing so.

Anybody got tips on how to get good at Pit Fighter for the Atari Lynx?

Some games, you have to be pro-level or you're not allowed to enjoy PvP. Other games have more of a gradient.

Learning and progressing is where the fun is. If you're not having fun then it's not for you, deadass.

There is nothing—NOTHING more funny than watching some fag try to obsessively hyperoptimize like they're aiming for top 8 only for them to get completely washed by someone with half their playtime who simply just actually played the game.

Labbing shit and going into combo trials is nice and all. At some point you gotta get your hands dirty and throw yourself in ranked. I say ranked because all of the players will be at your level.. If you go to regular lobbies you will get smashed by Master players. Seriously, just play. Don't be scared.

This.
Also if you think you can just play mindlessly your way through victory than you will hate the genre even more.
You have think about situations (set ups, counters, bait etc.).

Who was that guy who was making entire fucking graphs and literal flowcharts for Street Fighter 6? That was hilarious.
