I doubt OP is particularly invested but there's a serious discussion to be had about how the internet opened up the world to a huge breadth of media and decentralised culture such that new generations aren't sharing interests in the same way anymore. A lack of choice in consumption in a pre-internet media inherently fostered cultural closeness because there was an intrinsic familiarity with the same things which is entirely absent from the modern world where everyone is watching a million different shows and listening to a billion different bands. And games are even more susceptible to this, especially with online gaming which is segregated not just by abundance of choice but by the splitting of communities inside and out of games (eg. in-game chat vs discord).

Unrelated but I find it funny that forum oldfags tend to hate discord, but in this age of LLMs you're now far more likely to run into ai garbage in the former, and the latter are one of the last safe spaces on the internet from them.

Certainly you could have more focused and in-depth conversations on forums, but that had as much to do with the state of the internet back then as it did with the medium. Less normalfags and tourists, the people you interacted with were more likely to be articulate nerds.

That's just not possible in the current day without heavy moderation. You'll get overrun by shitters and suddenly a high effort linear message chain is a liability because anyone can type up something retarded and pollute the single point of interaction with it.

It's good for the same reason that 4chan used to be good when it had real moderation everyone is given equal billing if someone wants to hold a thread hostage people actually have to respond to them and then they also have to hope a mod doesn't shut it down, places like reddit that do tree style comments are anti-discussion because you can only have linear reply chains, places like discord don't work because replying to old info that isn't categorized in a separate channel from the main chat and then also locked down is lost in a flood of messages, the convenient thing about forums is that if you have question and it's been answered someone can tell you to go check page 5 post whatever, if something has been answered on discord you better hope that they remember the exact date and time or your going to be digging through the search all day, forums are simply a proven format with a variety of uses
