No fighting game system has felt as satisfying as the 8 Way Run + Weapons for me. No other 3D fighter has used their 3D space this well, and no 2D fighter has as interesting a Neutral game. This was when we were kids- before we even knew what Neutral game was. The Rock-Paper-Scizzors of Soul Calibur just felt that good.

And that's before you factor in 2 and 3's single player modes. I don't want present day Namco Bandai to make a new Soul Calibur, but I sure would like my Soul Calibur 8 Way Run back.

SC had sensible primary attacks and allowed 3d movement, and every fighter has a unique moveset which is also fairly realistic. His sword never just stops like a limp noodle. If you hit the enemy hard enough, he's launched or smashed into the ground. As you swing the sword from the left to right, up and down, you transition into other stances. The sword doesn't just bounce back to the neutral stance, it stays right where your previous attack ended. The weapon is a persistent entity in the game, not just a decoration and part of your character sprite/model.

Each button on the right is for one specific thing (vertical attack, horizontal etc) + one direction for variations.
And that's it, simple to understand, based on skills and not on retarded memorized combinations which don't make sense like any other fighting games, that's why i hate fighting games in general but loved soul calibur on my xbox

Weapon weight in general was fucking incredible in SC2! It wasn't just that some fighters generally had heavier hits than others, the weapons themselves were accounted for - damage, knockback and enemy recovery were all relative and logical for every weapon. Nightmare is a good example, as is Asteroth - if you got hit with the axe head, it had the same effect as getting hit with Nightmare's sword, BUT if you got hit with one of his attacks that utilized the haft, it wouldn't knock back as much and wouldn't do as much damage because getting hit with an axe handle, while painful, doesn't compare to getting hit with the axe head itself.
God, and that's not even getting into some of the unique ways you could get staggered in the game! Like how if you hit an opponent in the midsection at just the right moment, they pause and keel over because you fucking knocked the goddamn wind out of them and they need a minute to recover (which you obviously don't give, but still). Or how a foot shot had the chance to make them hop in place before falling over. They're miniscule things, but they helped make each round actually feel like a fight, not just a bunch of button combos.

I remember being a bit off put by Ivy when I first played SC2. I was unfamiliar with the whole older lady concept since I was just a teen back then.

No, fuck, I need to keep gushing, because this shit was fucking incredible. Almost every single goddamn character had a SELECTION of weapons that all had different hitboxes, weights and strengths, and you could tell just by playing how their weights were different, even with the fucking joke weapons!
And then there's Charade. Fucking Charade. The mimic character that, in a lesser game, would have just been a carbon copy of whoever he was mimicking at the time. But no, the crazy fuckers who made him gave him a consistent height and frame that affected his hitboxes and how he handled the weights of his weapons - he was slightly taller than Nightmare but he wasn't as strong, so his hits did slightly less damage and less knockback. They put this kind of thought into THE FUCKING MIMIC CHARACTER! You don't get this kind of attention to detail in fighting games these days!

I genuinely prefer her original P2 outfit, and am kind of sad it eventually just stopped showing up.

Ivy's honestly a weird character. Her and Siegfried have fairly interesting, tragic stories that are undercut by just being spelled out in their bios. Siegfried's quest for revenge and redemption is doomed since he himself killed his father while being a shitty bandit and immediately repressed it. That's be an interesting story, were it not just told to you and it was uncovered only by playing his storymode. Ivy's got it a bit better, being on a quest to destroy the Soul Edge for causing her father to go mad in the quest for it, shacking up with Nightmare and his cronies in a faustian bargain to achieve this. Only to eventually learn that not only was she duped into serving the thing she was trying to destroy, but it's part of her very being since she's Cervantes's natural daughter.

She ends up escaping from, and maybe kind of atoning for, her blunder, but now she's trapped by her very existence being tainted by the thing she hates, including her weird sword she's in love with. Not really down with just offing herself, she just putters around her castle by herself.

Also, both ends up being somewhat undercut, especially Siegfried, by the fact that their stories kind of naturally wrap up immediately, but there's six of these fucking things now so they just keep having to rerun their arcs. Siegfried managed to escape corruption only to get re-Nightmarified at least twice, I think? (One was the Wii side game, I think).
