i'm personally of the opinion that larger hard drives and fast internet had a large part to play in killing vidya, larger storage sizes led to higher customer expectations, if we never advanced past the 360 tech wise the industry would still be shitting out games instead of each brand having 1-3 flagship moats they dump all resources into.

in the xbox 360 era rockstar shat out 6 games in 10 years
in the xbox one era they only managed 1 in 10 years

2006
>can't fit more than 10gb on a disk and standard console hard drive is 20-100gb
>putting 5000 employees on one 10gb game is nonsensical so they get split into 6 teams
>6 different teams now making 6 different games
>consumers get 6 different games to buy over 6 years
>1-2 flopping doesn't matter/cost that much if the other 4 secede so companys can allow teams to take risks and make something new

2026
>can now put 100gb on a disk and hard drives are now in the 1TB range
>putting 5000 employees on 1 game is now a possibility if not mandatory to satiate increasing consumer expectations regarding graphics and game size for AAA games
>companys start doing this to compete with each other and satiate consumer demands
>hiring 20,000 people to make 5 different games like before is way too expensive and unwieldy, 1-2 games failing now is a shitload of money down the drain
>much better to just focus on the flagship series
>dump all employees into 1 flagship game instead
>only make 1 game per decade

indie games attempt to solve this by winding back the clock and pretending its 2007 with their game sizes
