I like those types of games for the premise, it's like open-world, but carefully crafted, combat is deliberate, difficulty is there, stories range from great to just comfy. But, it's been the same shit for like a decade now. Same moves - dash, double jump, slide. Same mechanics - dodge-roll, parry. Same shitty platforming sections with spikes and swapping skills on-demand.These games were dropping like every month and now I've had a look at release dates, my wishlist and there's nothing coming. Will indie devs finally do something creative or just find another retro-genre to milk?
>>743439447It doesn't feel like there have really been all that many indie metroidvanias, but I guess there are a fair number that I immediately dismiss for one reason or another (most frequently for having some sort of dash/roll universal defense mechanic, which I think always sucks in 2D games.) It's true that not many of them I've played have been very inventive with movement options, though. It's strange that something as well-known and respected as Super Metroid has movement options that haven't been heavily copied.
>>743439447I think the biggest issue isn't that they're metroidvanias in the sense of 'explore and find things and use the new things' but rather 'it's very clear you need this new tool you just discovered to go in the alternate path instead of this boss'Whereas most metroidvanias that are good had dead ends, items to find, etcLike Metroid itself was just basically item/health upgrades (outside of core items for progression like combs, morphball, varia/spce suit) and Castelvania was the same mostly (some of them had items like weapons or armor)So trhere was a reason to keep exploring. In most modern sloppy ones it's very much 'you are in this area for the boss... well done, now go back and use the double jump' - there's very little rreason to explore since most games don't give a reason beyond 'find the boss'But your point same mechanics, etc, is down to them trying to make it into a dark souls in 2d with jumps and it's fucking retarded since it's not even a metroidvania at that point, the gameplay is in the hard gameplay, not the puzzle/exploration aspect>>743440996I think people just never really did much beyond 'haha look dark souls but it's X'Hollow Knight is one of the furtherst things from a metroidvania in the same way that binding of issac or spelunky is one of the furtherst things from a roguelike yet they 'reinvented roguelikes' by taking the most basic parts and putting in action slopSame with how metroidvanias are. Very few exist
>>743439447Every once in a while one of them breaks the mold but yeah, I agree, there's way too many now and all of them feel the same.
So whats picrel anyway? Looks like Blasphemous but at the same time. I dont remember ever seeing that in Blasphemous
>>743445317It is from Blasphemous 2
>>743439447If you want to play Super Metroid, just play Super Metroid and stop being a faggot (impossible).
