I still find it fucking insane that the climax of the entire franchise were MG1 and MG2, the 8 bit pixel games made back in the 80s.

Every game made after those are either explanations of why/how it led to those games and to explain why a pixelated character named 'Big Boss' is so important.

Genuinely, if the series was a full blown movie, Outer Heaven/Zanzibar Land would the climax of the movie where everything is revealed.

Theres fucking nothing else like it in all of media

>>
>>743651719
Why not? He's 12 and has already been established since his inception as appearing older than his chronologically older siblings, AND he looks exactly like Big Boss. He's literally a child soldier in a man's body, and in less than five years from MGSV's timeline he'll be a fully trained CIA operative commanding forces in Liberia, when he's 17, give or take a couple of years.
The child soldier theme would be more in line with Solidus' backstory and could be extrapolated on, since he would be being portrayed as one himself.
Instead Venom is just a blank slate nobody that Kojimbo slaps random nonsense onto. Every single theme tied to Venom was established with Solidus in MGS2, from the aforementioned child soldiers, to the concepts of legacy, and even pride in said legacy as it relates specifically to Big Boss, whom Solidus idolized. There is absolutely no reason for V to not be Solidus, he practically IS Solidus, just with less/stolen character traits. Hell, they even stole/recycled Raiden's nickname for the retarded ass portayal of Liquid; "White Mamba".
The demon symbolism ties in closer to Solidus and Raiden than Big Boss, and the whole elements of the game wherein Venom is forced to slaughter his own men would influence his later reputation in Liberia, with Raiden's parents.
Goddammit, Kojimbob.

Accelerated aging isn't the same thing as accelerated growth. If he had been aging that quickly he would have already been dead before he was ever POTUS. It presumably affected Solidus the same way it did Solid, just a little earlier or a little harder. Yes, he led a unit in Liberia, but by that point he was a teenager explicitly leading a group of child soldiers which makes sense for a teenager.

Preteen Solidus LARPing as a middle-aged Big Boss would have indeed been extraordinarily retarded. There are a number of reasons Kojima used Venom, none of which would have applied to Solidus anyway.
>>
>>743653312
He's portrayed as already significantly aged in MGR's marketing which are set during the civil war. Granted, the canonicity of that is questionable, but Hideo Kojima played a significant role in that game, especially once it changed hands to Platinum, and his own writing staff rewrote the script.
The notion that the aging couldn't be controlled is a bit daft. He was created to look like Big Boss, to BE Big Boss. That was the purpose of his existence. """They""" would have and did want him to age ASAP.
>Preteen Solidus LARPing as a middle-aged Big Boss would have indeed been extraordinarily retarded
It's not so much a question of if he would be LARPing. After all, Venom didn't know he was LARPing until the end. This would still apply to Solidus, and he would come to the same conclusion as Venom; that he respects the legacy, and his inclusion in it. The only major difference to the storyline would be the prologue (how Venom became associated with Big Boss) and epilogue (what he does afterwards).
>There are a number of reasons Kojima used Venom, none of which would have applied to Solidus anyway.
Is it too much to ask for one? Because the only one I can think of I mentioned earlier: because he inexplicably wanted to tie up the plot hole between Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 that nobody on planet earth ever cared about, the whole "Somehow, Big Boss returned..." plot point.
>>

>>743654446

>>
>>743654682

>>
>>743654626

>>
>>743654354
>The notion that the aging couldn't be controlled is a bit daft.
But the idea that they magically start and stop his aging is a stretch and a huge leap in logic from what we know. It's fiction: anything is possible. Lots of retarded things are possible, which is how we got Metal Gear Rising and Sunny's eggs, but unlike Sunny's eggs the idea that Solidus's aging was radically different from Solid's is not in the games.
>The only major difference to the storyline would be the prologue (how Venom became associated with Big Boss) and epilogue (what he does afterwards).
The epilogue is significant though, and it's also a big part of why Venom being a player insert matters in a way that it wouldn't for Solidus. They aren't entirely exclusive, since every Metal Gear game draws a connection between the player and the main character as a player surrogate, but MGSV takes it even further than MGS2. The whole point is that Venom had an identity distinct from Big Boss's for decades. He was a grown man that just happened to work for him, along with whatever personal baggage you might project onto him. 12 year old Solidus (JUNIOR HIGH REDEFINED) wouldn't have even had time to come to grips with involuntary erections and acne, and his entire existence is dependent on Big Boss and the Patriots to begin with (one reason why he stages his revolt in MGS2). It doesn't really land the same way. Big Boss's manipulations wouldn't either.

Venom existing to explain something MG2 already explained is one of those ideas that caught on because people were too butthurt to use their brains. Even if you hate TPP it's extremely obvious that has fuck-all to do with Kojima's reasoning. At most it's a somewhat tragic bit of dramatic irony, and more than anything helps keep Venom a self-contained addition to an already convoluted timeline.
>>
>>743650775
Regardless of story that climax felt like a proper series ending which nothing about MGSV does.
>>
>>743657782
MGS4 felt like a proper ending to Solid's post-MG1 story and MGSPW felt like a proper ending to BB's pre-MG1 story.
>>
>>743650883
>climax happens in the middle
Climaxes (in plot progression at least) tend to happen right before the end.
>>
>>743659265
you fucking nigger, middle as in not the beginning and not the end/epilogue.

It can happen in a sliding scale after the beginning and before the end
>>
>>743659265
To further explain:

Beginning/__________________________Middle__________________________/End

The climax of a story happens in that massive middle part. Mostly towards the end as you say

However, there are stories/games/movies where the climax happens 30 minutes after the start, and sometimes repeats again.

For example, in the new James Bond game, you discover 009 dead in the middle of the game, then massive gunfight occurs bam thats climax.

Then at the end.... there's another climax where u fight the real bad guys
>>
>>743659563
Aren't the earlier climaxes technically minor climaxes, that work toward the greater climax that happens at the end?
>>
>>743651074
Fuck Huey
He said my dog was a wolf wtf does that faggot know.
>>
>>743660002
NO.

For example: Fight Club starts at the climax and the narrator has to piece the story together

Then you also have memento by christopher nolan, it starts with the climax and the narrator has to piece it together

The Place Beyond the Pines

The climax is Ryan Gosling's story, and he dies in the beginning. The two other POV stories explore the aftermath of that climax

Theres many more examples

exactly. the entire point of operation snake eater was twofold.
1. to take out The Boss while carefully crafting an entirely new legend to replace her with and

Problem with the former is that it worked out too well and they did it before confirming BB's loyalty to the state, so he was able to create PMCs outside of the influence of the US while still being able to go back and run FOXHOUND to attempt to sabotage the organization from stopping Outer Heaven.

Big Boss 100% participated in Blacksites, either as observer or torturer. You do not become the CIA's top attack dog without being intimate with this kind of black ops shit.

It also circles back to Mantis crashing the plane to the hospital (it's not shown in the game but lore-wise that's how he introduced himself to the plot).

Yeah this thread convinced me, MGSV must actually be about 9/11, and i bet konami got extremely uncomfortable at this story and told him to change it.
>>
>>743663115
There are certainly hints alluding to that, remember Kojima was OBSESSED with ideas of men getting framed for political reasons; MGS4's cut ending and him repeatedly using Here's to You.
It's not too far fetched to think Kojima took an interest on certain individual who also got framed by the government.
>>
>>743670103
I bet in kojima's alternate universe where 9/11 happens, it actually happens in 1993 during the failed attack then. Probably this is why mg1 takes place in 1995, as a convoluted explanation.

So eli definitely did 9/11, but it happens on 9/11/1993 in the metal gear universe.

>>
>When you realize Venom Snake is an MKULTRA supersoldier
>>
>>743671486
Nonlethal zero kills playthrough. Very little grinding because tranqs are easy to build.
Possible to complete every single mission except for shining lights with zero kills. Your only kills in this game are the mandated 20 staff you shoot in shining lights.

Satisfying as fuck knowing it is possible to have a canonical venom who never killed a single person, ever. This is also obviously why he is set up as a combat medic: because it makes his reasons for joining MSF ambiguous, he could have really always just been a pacifist, and merely was kidnapped by big boss to be his personal medic.

Zero kills/lethal venom is the difference between him being a hypocrite or not. A zero kills venom is canonically the true legendary "big boss" of the lore, and literally achieved global world peace without ever firing a single shot that wasnt a rubber bullet or a sleeping dart.

It's possible that venom potentially canonically never killed a single person, as long as you play your save right. It's hard, but doable.
>>
>>743671632
Canon venom:
>flower picker, saver of puppies (literally lol, picking flowers raises staff moral)
>never killed a single person ever except his men to save the world, and it tore him up so badly that he honors the scant few soldiers under his rank who die as immortal diamonds
>saviour of POWs the world over, rescues wild animals from combat zones
>achieves global nuclear disarmament
>...
>"real" big boss comes in a decade later, throws him under the bus, steals his cultivated legend after being in hiding, and kills him
>venom died potentially having never killed a soul, except for his men who begged for death in shining lights

I think Medic was a genuinely good guy who was a top tier killer but went with a role that was explicitly the opposite.

Big Boss then MKULTRA'd and brainwashed his personality away.

There's a theme in MGS about organizations splitting and becoming enemies down the line

>XOF vs FOX
>FOX vs FOXHOUND
>PATRIOTS vs FOXHOUND
>FOXHOUND vs OUTER HEAVEN (Which came from Diamond Dogs which came from MSF which came from.. FOXHOUND.. which came from FOX..

The point I'm getting at, is that it is entirely within the internal logic of Metal Gear if it turned out that Outer Heaven in MG1 is actually a split faction from Big Boss' original plan, and that Big Boss and Venom actually led different factions of the 'Outer Heaven Nation'

I still dont know whether in my head a lethal/nonlethal venom is better. The idea of a pacifist combat medic being brainwashed into a demon, only to realize too late, is almost just as cool as the alternative where the disposable body double turns out to be the real, true hero of the world and the actual legend behind the myth.
>>
>>743672071
Sucks that all that custom mapping and noding stuff totally stonewalled, though. And I don't even know if the Camp Omega port is worth adding.
>>
>>743672137
I dont think anyone in MSF is truly a pacifist.

They are basically running a mafia corporation that holds nations hostage. Everyone there is a stone cold killer, even Huey as we saw in TPP
>>
>>743672274
Yeah, i largely agree although i do think he is specifically a "medic" to make it ambiguous whether he is a killer.
There is definitely a HUGE theme in all three games about how they were actually all already too far gone by peace walker, and it's just that big boss and MSF are so charismatic that they convince both the player, *and* themselves, that they are "heros".

Big boss truly believes he is saving the world, even though he is ostensibly a fascist dictator speedrunning a new world order. He bought into his own bullshit and believes his own legend, just like everyone else in MSF idolizes big boss.

Physint is going to be a real Metal Gear game where you play as Liquid.
This is obviously Liquid. He's wearing Liquid's duster from MGS1 and a sneaking suit that looks like the one from MGS2.
The art deco buildings suggest it's taking place in the past, but the relatively modern gun and optic suggest it can't be any earlier than the late 80's or early 90's

He can, if they hired the new KJP as a contractor, which isn't out of the question. The mutual distancing between Konami and Kojima stopped right around MGS Delta's announcement. They put his name in more places than they strictly had to for the remake, the prerelease marketing materials made a big deal out of that, and they even let it go on the record that "They'd like to work with Kojima-san again." If there was zero chance of that happening and they still mutually hated each other neither of those things would have happened.
Konami desperately wants to win back the goodwill they lost after Kojima left because their pachinko and multiplayer mobile games strategy didn't work out.
And what could be better for that than showing the schism has been mended? (While letting Sony foot much of the bill.)

I have a hard time believing Kojima would come back to the genre without a really good reason, and the only reason I can think of that'd be good enough, is getting the chance to fill in the last gap in the timeline and resolve the only regret he had about the series in the process. Kojima has said that the only thing he regretted about Metal Gear was killing Liquid off so early and not getting to explore his character more deeply.

Does MGSV hold up in 2026 and is it worth playing or does it feel like openworldslop now in a field of openworld games?
I played literally all MGS games except MGSV and I really enjoyed 2 & 3 in particular. But that was quite a while back, now.
>>
>>743681854
MGSV, somewhat, is built as a parody of open world games. It's a "choose your own adventure big boss simulator" military tycoon kind of game, and the open world slop elements are almost parody-esque at times. For example, that one anon earlier pointing out how your resource extraction of materials like fuel, is actually a commentary on robbing the middle east and africa of resources. Baked into a silly open world basebuilding minigame, though.
Same sthick with the game making you design an open world avatar as part of the body double twist.

It's pretty generic, but it is one of the better designed open worlds out there, and the open world is used to tell metanarratives if you pay close attention.
>>

>>743684608
It's an unfinished game. Imagine what could've been. Kojima two aa flops look and play very much like tpp.
>>
>>743684608
nah man, it's a bad game because it's dreadfully boring. there's about an hour total of designed scenario play which is mostly good, about ten hours of dealing with blind deaf retarded guards, another 10 of doing grindy horseshit, and then like 20 hours of menuing. the rest of your playtime will be padded out with repeats of the 20 hours of retarded guards or grindy horseshit. i look back on my playtime with contempt and disgust.

it's not even an open world game, you pick a mission from horribly designed UI, load screen into chopper ride into a cordoned off area that if you go outside of the mission gets aborted, once you finish the mission to helicopter back to loading screen back to bad UI, back to helicopter back to mission area.
If you're retarded you will leave the mission on foot and then walk around empty open world with nothing worthwhile to find, you can clear out "outposts" that make far cry 3 areas look like Sagrada familia in comparison.

This was the only MGS game I hadn't played up until this point, recently got the complete edition on sale from Steam. Start the game, with a 2 hour mission with tons of callbacks to MGS history and the goofy fun part of Metal Gear Solid is front and center. Unfortunately that lasts for about 3 missions then it feels so generic and uninspired for the rest of the game, it hardly even deserves the title.

I definitely think the events of GZ are not what we saw in game, and that the GZ scenario we played through was part of Venom's hypnotherapy training. I'm not totally convinced BiBo was a torturer there, though I understand where the idea comes from and there is evidence to support it. The CIA/9/11 angle is not one I considered before but it is kino so I'm choosing to believe it's real.

I think kojima especially wanted to critique guantanamo bay because Obama promised to close it, but then didn't. It still operated during phantom pain's development, iirc. And it's also where they sent most 9/11 perpetrators that were captured.
9/11 itself also perfectly encapsulates the "cycles of revenge" theme. America's dirty deeds abroad came home to roost as blowback.
Glad u thought my theory was kino man haha took fifty playthroughs to formulate it.

Survive was clearly supposed to be just an expansion to V's Metal Gear Online but was turned into its own game. TPP still has a scrapped co-op mode that has been modded back in recently, and some story beats and visuals in Survive do resemble a few concepts in Death Stranding (Dite being a post-apocalyptic Earth, Goodluck resembling Die Hardman, Seth resembling Higgs etc.).
But I also feel the gameplay concept of connections on a shared map, the father/child plot and obviously the main characters for PT were reused and reworked for Death Stranding.
So the evidence is there for DS to be an amalgamation of ideas from both Silent Hills and Metal Gear Survive

I kind of like the idea that the Patriots (Zero) came up with the idea of S3 Plan test from Big Boss creating Venom.
>>
>>743695646
Zero is already brain dead in the early/mid 80s, go listen to the cassette tapes

The 'Patriots' you've been fighting in MG1, MG2, MGS1, MGS2 and MGS4 have all been middle manager and AI supercomputers.

There's no actual face of the Patriots after MGSV, you're fighting the actual 'system' set up by Zero, Paramedic, and uhh the black guy I cant remember.

You're fighting basically faceless middle managers, politicians and automated systems by the time of Solid, which is scary if you think about it.

you're fighting a whole system hence why its hard to just shoot it and get rid of the problem
>>
>>743672563
>didn't watch a single cutscene
>>
>>743696120
Don't forget there's a lot of hints that The Patriot AIs are the ones who are contracting Venom and DD to take out Skullface for them. Basically the end of most missions in V ends on a cliffhanger and mysterious circumstances
>very first mission you're told your target is a commander who is murdering villagers
>if you listen to his conversation to his troops, he's actively telling them to NOT murder civilians but someone else is burning down villages
We can infer this is Skullface and his XOF testing the parasite and burning any evidence with later information. But instead of The Patriots straight up telling you this, they lead you on to an eventual confrontation with the one man who is trying to take them out

It was a cover. He pretend to be playing nice with the Patriots while he was actually getting shit in motion with Outer Heaven, and as the commander of FOXHOUND he also had the advantage of commanding the exact unit that would be deployed to oppose him. Peace Walker and MGSV muddy this somewhat, since originally Big Boss being in command of Outer Heaven was supposed to be a big surprise to everybody and that doesn't really make much sense now. That said there isn't really an alternative explanation either.

This has been an issue since PW, though.
>>
>>743696464
Yep, i believe this, because this is basically a parallel of how Solid Snake and Raiden was getting instructions and missions from top sources, who either turn out to be AI or working with the Patriot system themselves

I genuinely believe Big boss was a tool of the Patriots the whole time. I dont think the Patriots ever hated Big Boss, infact, MGSV and Venom was literally... a patriots project after Skullface went nuts and attacked Zero and MSF

A lot of minor things don't. Remakes would just make that shit worse. Konami also cannot make good games to save their lives, and that's been the case since the 2000s, so I'd rather we just didn't. Nothing about UE5 Eater made me optimistic.

Using the central elevator can be annoying but the purpose of the room is timing how you move to avoid the guards walking through the spiral, which doesn't take much effort; it's just a bit of a pace breaker if you need to crawl under the walls, but you often won't. In terms of variety and enemy placement it's one of the best games in the series without question. It even uses crawling better than any other game in the series.

The jeep ride was actually one of the coolest, most kino scenes in all of gameing, and I can't believe people don't appreciate it.
>skullface says "big boss" in mocking quotation marks, revealing he knows Venom is a double (he doesn't care because he relates to Venom better and knows he's a better revenge target)
>Big Boss is far gone enough that he sits down with his mortal enemy in parallel face to face with him, reflecting how they are mirror images
>skullface sets up the precipace for Venom's villain motivations by having the exact same motivations in having his identity stolen: "I was invaded by words; burrowing and breeding inside me. A philosopher once said: it is no nation we inhabit, but a language. Make no mistake, our native tongue is our true fatherland. My "truth," my heritage was stolen from me."
Skullface is not speaking about himself. He is serving as a mirror to Venom Snake, reflecting the same motivations that will, in ten years, make him a villain. He lost even more than skullface did.

This isn't the most hyper autistic about canon franchise we think it is.

It's quite long, is framed in a very mundane boring way(or just not framed at all as it's not a cutscene) and Venom remains a quiet fuck the whole journey.
>the absolute kino reveal of "The word became flesh. The final parasite. It knows English. I will exterminate the English language."

Big Boss's lore was divided into two characters via MGS3.
Big Boss's previous ww2 accomplishments now belong to The Boss, funnily enough similarly to how his 80s accomplishments now belong to Venom Snake, and his Snake Eater mission can be accredited to Skullface.

Literally every game that expands upon Big Boss, also introduces a new character who deconstructs his legend via taking credit for his accomplishments.
>didnt fight in ww2
>didnt complete snake eater alone
>his most notable period of deployment, the 80s and 90s, are now divided among naked, venom, and solidus snake
It's actually pretty cool how slowly and long burned we got the Big Boss deconstruction. From ww2 hero to villainous monster who stole everything from others.
>>
>>743701948
>MGS1's manual said Big Boss was a world war 2 vet only for Liquid to call him young during the cold war
An even more amusing example is Big Boss being part Japanese with a family history of internment because Japan was still in its obligatory dose of GRORIOUS NIPPON for every Western character phase. Thank God that shit got scrapped.
>>
>>743702161
>funnily enough similarly to how his 80s accomplishments now belong to Venom Snake, and his Snake Eater mission can be accredited to Skullface.
People overrate Skullface. He was Zero's secret bitchboy on cleanup duty. A capable agent certainly, but he wasn't the one sneaking through Groznyj Grad or running from The Fury's flamethrower.

Likewise we know Big Boss still accomplishing things in the 1980s too, even if it's mixed up with Venom now.

>>
>>743702345
He was, however, leaving item drops for snake, cleaning up bodies, and probably prepping future routes and providing your radio team backup the intel they needed.

When you think on how all the "gameplay" elements of MGS3 such as despawning bodies or item drops are now actually retconned to be Skullface supplying Snake, Snake's overall accomplishments actually become a lot less impressive.
Most weapons, camos, food items, and supplies he acquired were most likely planted by skullface.

Now I wonder if he worked under Ocelot, they don't really interact in V
>>
I like to imagine that, after realizing slowly that his development was being fucked by Konami, chose to rework the story of MGSV around the cut content via creating a "phantom pain." I wouldn't be surprised if he intentionally cut more than was requested, to intentionally invoke a feeling of "something missing" as the penultimate metacommentary. It is very telling, for example, that KOTF was cut more than 2 years before release.

Although i do think more content was planned, i like to feel that the absolute unraveling of part 2 in MGSV is actually an intelligently planned metanarrative about loss.
Truly, there has never been a game that more fully makes the protagonist and the player one and the same. It is high art, even if unfinished.
>>
>>743702698
There is a fair amount of evidence that ocelot might have had a hand in the motherbase attack. Ocelot wanted to isolate big boss from miller to properly set him back on course after peacewalker, and the way the game unravels really does make it seem all intentional.

I would not be surprised if skullface is behind Ground Zeros. Have you ever noticed how both characters are desperado cowboys? That is a very intentional mirroring.

I know you want more of the game, but all you got is all that was written (with the exception of KOTF of course)
That "Chapter 3" title card means nothing. It was probably meant for chapter 2 when first was split into separate afghan and africa chapters. There are a lot of strange decisions like that, maybe made last minute to convey the sense of "a phantom pain".

Ocelot and Skullface are ADAM and EVA. Ocelot was Snake's frontline support in MGS3, and Skullface was his backlines support.
As per the double agent eva twist in mgs3, the "real" EVA never got seen in mgs3 becausd the fake chinese spy eva blew the opportunity.

They so, so work together, and ocelot might be more of a traitor than people realize in MGSV via working with skullface historically but VERY subtly.

The return to camp omega would have shown ocelot as the torturer on sight behind ground zeros. He would be responsible for the attack on motherbase, and the "true" traitor. Huey and Miller are misdirections.
As for why he did it? Gave him the perfect opportunity to groom "Big Boss" into his idealized husbando, in a controlled psyop environment.
The medic twist is the *actual* brainwashing, where Ocelot convinces "Big Boss" that he has no identity, is a nameless faceless representation of soldiers, and "not the real Snake."

You play as the real snake in MGSV and he is reconstructed by Dr. Madnar via cybernetics and nanomachines, directly as MG2 clearly established before the retcon took place. Big Boss, waking up from Outer Heaven's fall as a reconstructed cyborg, then realizes that the "phantom" never existed in the first place.
>>
>>743704283
Ocelot was also responsible for torturing kaz.
He is a canonical spetznaz torturer in Afghanistan during the 80s via MGS1, and we find Miller in a spetznaz torture camp. Lol.

>He was, however, leaving item drops for snake, cleaning up bodies, and probably prepping future routes and providing your radio team backup the intel they needed.
We don't really know what he did, just that he was in an auxiliary support role that tidied things up. It's not like he had ties to the Soviet fish and wildlife reserve dumping rabbits and snakes for him to eat. Most of the resources in the game are things it would make sense to be there already. The whole point was that he was following behind Snake. He didn't even do this alone, since even back then XOF existed. He had a covert unit alongside him. It was significant recon stuff but it was Naked Snake that took down the Cobras. It was Snake that got punched in the gut by Volgin. It was Naked Snake that blew up the Shagohad.

Even in terms of cleanup it's not clear what all he did, since part of the premise of MGS3 is that whatever traces Naked Snake did leave were a useful and necessary indication of American involvement.

The actual "truth" that big boss was hypnogogia'd to be unable to see. Him and ocelot rode off together on horse and motor bike, to the tanker ship. And then MGSV took place as ocelot tortures kaz in afghanistan on your first mission as you collect the intel, prepping the further seeds of doubt, delusion, and schizophrenia in big boss that he isnt the "real thing"
Except he was, the whole time. It convinced Big Boss's enemies that he was in hiding, and gave him the perfect opportunity to mould him.
The entire world knows he's "fake," except he isn't

In a word, it's doublethink.

Except this time, make it a meta-narrative about how the player, as one of Big Boss's staunchest supports and his "best soldier" as the Medic, is the one taking up the mantle as part of the legend, and unlike Raiden rejecting his situation, the player indulges it with all the hell that comes alongside it.

yes. Kojima wanted to do the raiden twist again but way worse. he thought he was a genius by lying in every single interview about how the game is the missing link between Big Boss' saga and Solid Snake's saga. phantom pain is a giant nothing burger fanfic filler game about a fanfic self insert oc doing boring unimportant shit while big boss fucked off to somewhere doing actually important stuff that Kojima promised that phantom pain was going to be about. the twist was incredibly easy to guess by the subtitle of the game, the prologue section with the character creator, and the fact that Big Boss didn't have Paz's body parts in his skull, face scars, or mechanical hand in MGS4

Don't care, MGSV is the only thing he's made that's worth playing.
The rest is all crap movies with some of the most awful dialogue I've ever heard.

Any suggestions for a first time player? I 100%'d Ground Zeroes years ago and then started TPP like twice and then ended up with it getting into the backlog.

When playing through missions the first time is it worth it to try and get a high rank? Do S rank completions require that you do everything in one try (ie no kills, no alerts (or not being seen at all even if you knock em out before alert?), all side objectives, fast etc? ) or can you you finish it fast with minimal objectives and loud and get an S rank for speed, then come back and take ages to silently do everything proper and still get S overall because you already got max speed etc? I know certain missions even early on can't be done with side objectives until you get late game stuff like being able to fulton a fucking car etc.

No. You're gonna need better items or better understanding of the cheese to get higher ranks. They pay you more but you kind of don't need it.
>Do S rank completions require
All they require is 13000 points(and no rank restricting stuff like invisibility or bombardment). MOST of the time you can sprint from point A to point B and destroy the objective from a long range only to sprint outside the mission area to finish it. You'll get S rank even if you get a combat alert or two. Better stealth gives you some bonuses like a no kill, no alert, no reflex(if disabled it's just free points), etc. and that just means a bit more points, but it usually pales in comparison to the time bonus.
Overall it's not worth doing bonus objectives for higher rank alone because they're time consuming, but you're still gonna have to do them for 100%. I'd recommend just doing them first and then worrying about S ranking after.
You're not gonna have any fun if you try to speedrun the missions on your first go like an autist.
>come back and take ages to silently do everything proper and still get S overall
You can have a no traces bonus that guarantees S rank, but it's not always feasible because you sometimes have to destroy stuff or kidnap a dude and that alone voids your no traces attempt.

I wonder if huey was framed. It is hard to tell, but that trial absolutely feels like a sham.

Killing strangelove didn't make him any worse than any other member of diamond dogs. A huge part of the Huey story is how Big Boss and his gang of mercenaries are hypocrites in prosecuting a murderer when they are literally mercenaries for hire.
I doubt huey knew the inspection was fake, and I doubt he is responsible for the vocal chord parasites. He did kill strangelove, though.

He's honestly just sort of a bizarre case of having his characters ramble about liberal ideals and then turn around and glorify the fuck out of the coolest shit he can come up with no matter how clashing or nonsensical it is to what he said prior. Big Boss in PW is straight up being compared to Che Guevara, and the leitmotif Skull Face is bringing about is a song about the injustice over Nicola and Bart as anarchist Italian immigrants executed by America over the murders they were implicated for, etc, but then most of MGSV tosses that aside as everyone calls each other idiots in favor of kicking Liquid around, making Skull Face excessively petty, and Huey being king dipshit.

For Fence you can get into the base easily by climbing the cracks on either side of the area.
As for Bees, that sounds strange. Maybe a controller issue? Anyway, I recommend actually using D-horse for this one. You can basically skip the first base if you stick to the right side and climb, then avoid the 1 or 2 guys near the outskirts. Then just continue on to the Smasei fort, the weapon isn't really hidden, the bigger hurdle is figuring out that you can enter the deeper part of it. You might want to bring a moderately good assault rifle with you though.

Maybe. To the Japanese, the communism, banana republics and general situation of Cuba and surrounding regions in the 60s is probably the coolest drama piece ever for the era. Big Boss basically being a dude recruiting child soldiers while being held as a messianic revolutionary leading a private military force making sweeping change against foreign influence is on the nose as practically a movie-ification of an outsider's ideals with the matter, though he has the sense for BB to grumble and be aware of some of the irony.

Snake is the inheritor of not just the title of Foxhound but Grey Fox's will to create a world without the need for war. That is ultimately the point of metal gear solid, a series of villains who believe that it is okay to commit war as long as it is on some particular set of terms that they believe morally justifies war, and snake who carries gray fox's will and fights for a world where warfighters can one day stop fighting wars.

>>
XOF is basically a prototype for the later Outer Heaven/Zanzibar problem.

>Armed shadow of Cipher that becomes autonomous, develops its own will, gets access to terrifying weapons, then has to be destroyed by the very system that created or enabled it.

There's a lot of parallels with Big Boss becoming the enemies he fights.

>He becomes a rogue state actor that holds a country hostage with nuclear weapons AKA Volgin

>He becomes the rogue mentor figure that Snake has to kill AKA The Boss

>He ends up making 'Outer Heaven' which was derived from Gene's Army's Heaven (Portable Ops)

>He becomes an evil nuclear mastermind in MG1 and MG2, basically Hot Coldman from Peace Walker

>He becomes the rogue arm of Cipher that had to be destroyed by a Snake in MG1 and MG2 (XOF+ Skullface)

Every villain Big Boss fights is basically... him from the future

The cutscenes in MGS games can be skipped. Funnily enough MGSV is FAR worse with the unskippable helicopter ride loading screens, actual loading screens, traversing the horrible open world, waiting for Pequod to arrive, spending time in menus, waiting for things to develop, and so on. But clearly you didn't catch on to how much of your time it wastes because it's a bit more abstract

I'd rather be allowed to spend that time scouting things from the ground level. Besides most of the time you drop in far, FAR away from anything interesting happening. Unless you're going in with the miniguns.
You're also often sent back to base after certain missions and have to wait even more during the heli departure.
>>waiting for Pequod to arrive
>Tension
Not really. Not unless you call him into the middle of the base in the middle of a combat alert and that kind of goes against the "stealth" part of the stealth game. It's just waiting if you forget to call him in early after doing the objective.
>>waiting for things to develop
>Mostly irrelevant
Not at all. It's still pointless waiting that doesn't serve any purpose. You are not entertained during that time, you're just killing time. There isn't even an animation of the gun being developed, you're just hit with a timer for no reason.
>>
>>743733057
You can make any excuses you want, but it's a fact that MGSV wastes far more of your time with loading screens and open world crap that is unskippable. Even in MGS4, the game most memed for its cutscenes, you can skip the opening and start sneaking right away

Meanwhile in MGSV, you have the worst scripted intro in the history of gaming and then this is the kind of amazing HYA mission design that awaits you

Then he did some bullshit hypnosis therapy to convince himself he actually was Liquid Snake, copying his mannerisms body language etc down perfectly, the idea was to confuse the AI system in MGS4 that he actually was Liquid Snake and bypass the system thinking he has Big Boss's DNA. Then at the end of the fight Ocelot snaps back to reality and dies. Fin

So the powers that be (I.E. national governments, The Patriots, etc...), in the age of intelligence, wouldn't be suspicious? Let alone if one dude working for X has a friend working for Y, and they you know meet up for drinks one day and get to talking.
There's literally no reason for Big Boss to even have a doppelganger because he's so effective at just hiding underground anyway. Like, he spent nearly a decade personally building Outer Heaven before merging it with Diamond Dogs, and nobody ever knew or cared. Then AFTER the merger Venom isn't even made a poster child or targeted. It's still a "twist" that BB was a double agent during his time with FOXHOUND.
This shit makes less than no sense.
>>
>>743718872
Big Boss set up Outer Heaven. Venom was technically still a seperate entity operating Diamond Dogs until around 1994-95, whereupon they "officially" merged and Big Boss went back to the U.S. to train his biological son to kill him, for some reason I'm still not 100% sure of.
So from approximately 1989-1994, you had Big Boss in Central/South Africa (IIRC), Venom off the east coast of Africa, and Solidus in West Africa.
What a thrill.

Damn. You just recontextualized it for me.

It's also pretty awful how snake and co. are waterboarding their guests, threatening to break huey's legs, and hooking women POWs up to car batteries.
They really aren't as good as a lot of people read the game, lol. People are just desensitized to it all, which i think is part of the commentary.

Hooking quiet up to a car battery pretty firmly makes the entire diamond dogs cast nothing but a bunch of terrorists. They are doing the same torture that was done to paz and chico 9 years ago.

Diamond Dogs are literally no better than XOF. Venom oversees all of the room 101 cutscenes. And what do you think ocelot is doing in room 101 to convince your staff to join diamond dogs? Do you think he charismatically persuades them? Lol. Ocelot is heavily implied to torture your staff, as well, which is why they love big boss and speak perfect English.

Video game lore is always stupid and confusing and I've literally never cared about the lore/backstory of any game I played. Even when I TRY to pay attention to things I inevitably end up skipping all the cutscenes by the time im in the last third of the game.
I have the platinum for MGSV and I've literally never played any of the other games and all I know is the best twist is that youre a clone of the real Snake. That being said I did get emotional as fuck when Jack Bauer says "I wont scatter your sorrow to the heartless sea." Goddamn that was a good cutscene.

Big Boss's passports has the wrong dates.
It was issued while both venom and him were in a coma.
It has a photo of venom snake on it with no shrapnel, wearing the man who sold the world jacket.
See this post for a clear pic of it.>>743665407

See pic related for the wrong dates.

The "truth" mission is a lie. How did this passport get stamped for entering JFK airport 2 years before it was issued?

Why would the Avatar character have a picture with a Diamond Dogs jacket and motorcycle sunglasses and no Horn in 1980? This is after the shrapnel injury of ground zeroes and before V wakes up.

"V" is the real Snake, psyopped and brainbroken for moulding into "Big Boss."
Ocelot knows The Boss is his mother and wants to set Big Boss memetically back on the right path. This is why the Venom ruse is needed.

that's not really what the series is about ultimately. It's far more about the media and the state working together to manufacture consensus, and manufacture villains.
The series starts with a very straight forward narrative where a hero fights a "big boss", and then the whole thing gradually unravels, until we realise Big Boss wasn't even a guy. He was a character constructed by the intelligence agencies.

Real talk, the overlap with snatcher and kojima's other threads cannot be overstated. So many of kojima's other games are referenced in MGSV. Sahelanthropus is Zone of the Enders etc. Meryl doesn't even appear for the first time in the metal gear series. A lot of MGSV and the body double twist is specifically a snatcher reference

I'll do you one better: The Boss AI was functional at the time of Strangelove's death and has full access to the Mammal Pod. Its opening of the hatch IS the climax of Peace Walker. Huey isn't an AI engineer, Strangelove is, so it's impropable he somehow reprogrammed the AI or was able to override it to prevent the hatch from opening. Not to mention since The Boss AI is designed to emulate The Boss herself, so it would be and is suicidal and likely resents its existence, so if it became aware that Strangelove created it, it would have every motivation to want revenge, which is the major theme of MGSV.
Conclusion? The Boss AI lured (or waited for) Strangelove into the Mammal Pod, then sealed her in. Huey had no logical motivation (the infant pilot shit makes no sense and doesn't even work logistically with the design of Sahelanthropus) or ability to commit this inane murder.
One thing I do believe he lied about is his knowledge of her death. He likely found her shortly after her death and was unable to remove her due to him being a cripple, and probably lied to Ocelot and Kaz out of fear and/or sadness, and why would he lie? Because they act like psychopaths towards him fron the word go under baseless assumption regarding MSF's demise 10 years prior.
There's a reason Venom judges him the way he does. He's not innocent, because he still has questionable morals regarding his design of weapons and willingness to contract with pretty much anyone, including MSF/DD themselves. But he's also just ultimately a civilian. He's not a war dog, just a mad scientist who isn't even all that mad, and ultimately nothing Ocelot and Kaz accuse him of sticks, and the ironic part is they never accuse him of the aforementioned. Him designing weapons and shit in general is not the issue. Their only concern was his loyalty. They wanted him to be a sycophant, and he wasn't one.
R.I.P. Huey.

It's not about fanservice. I was fine with the idea of a new, original character as the protagonist of MGSV. My issue is that every theme relating to Venom is just recycled from Solidus'.
If you're not going to do something actually original, why bother with a "new" character and the hoops you have to jump through to explain the story and thematics you could've just extrapolated on with the long previously-since established character you have?
Not to mention that nobody fucking cares about Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2, or how Big Boss survived. People liked MGS2, and you had the opportunity to tell this story of MGSV, while expanding on MGS2, and have it be more effecient.
Instead, it's Medicman. This random dude who was just as good in the field as Big Boss, so we mindraped him and did a facial reconstruction on him. Why? Uh, so that I, the real Big Boss, could train my genetic offspring to murder him.
Whoa... Bravo, Kojimbo.

Realism playthrough. Don't use the radar or any of the fictional gear like the binocular markings, allies like the dog, weapons like the tranq or the arm, etc. Don't call in support unless the support drop is out of range of enemy weapons. Play every mission like a real infiltrator would doing stuff like observing the field for a while before going in. Use the canon timeframe of the Phantom Pain Incident, about 8 months. Go for a real Snake technique and use CQC at every opportunity.

EVA and Boss obviously. Everything else is wrong.
