Why does nobody like Halo anymore? Can this series be saved?
>>
I like Halo, I even had fun with 5 recently.
>>
>>743656684
What's the reason to buy this?
>>
I love halo! Idk what the OP pic has to do with it though
>>
>>743656684
Nobody likes shit games. Fix that and people will like Halo again.
>>
>>743656684
Halo has longer been bad than it has been good by now, Gaylo if you will so
>>
>>743656684
i dont care about Master Chief or the story as a whole
and it feels like a console game, even on mouse and keybaord
>>
Halo 3 came out before CoD4. That's why nobody cares anymore.
>>
Because it hasn't been good since 3. Even today, people would rather just play Halo 3 on MCC than Infinite.

Campaign Evolved is completely pointless. 343 is incapable of making a good game themselves, so they have to try polish a Bungie game.
>>
The problem is that 343 thinks the series is about "lore" and telling boring stories about unlikable characters; they will never understand the series and will continue to make bad games. Halo is about a larger-than-life legendary hero making his way through strange, alien locations; it has all the magic of Star Wars in it without needing any actual space magic; just tell the story as if it were a legend even though it's a mundane sci-fi setting -- presentation is everything.
>>
>>743657910
Not really. You just sound like 343 when describing what Halo is about. It's not about Master Chief at all. It's about the military he inhabits. Every game that hasn't embodied the life of a UNSC soldier has been a failure, from Chief's perspective or not. You can't just have it be a spartan wank capeshit-fest.

>>
>>743657365
Damn this is crazy to think about. There were 10, maybe 12 good years of Halo and pushing 15 years of putrid shit. The absolute state of western vidya games.
>>
>>743656684
The covenant was Halo. The covenant died, so Halo died with it.
>>
>>743656684
for people outside of the bubble it would be trivial to save Halo. the blueprint exists (Halo 1-3) and all you have to do is hire people who can technically execute that kind of game in a time frame of under 5 years. that's it. you just do that and Halo is "saved".

for people inside the bubble that is 343 and MS' weird pseudo-separated hierarchy with a billion temp employees swapping out on a 1-1.5 year basis it is utterly impossible to do the above.
1. they can't make a Halo 1-3 like because some managers are on a crusade to prove that oldBungie wasn't great and their "copy COD" ideas are better.
2. they can't hire people who could technically execute a good game because of MS' temp policy.

so no, in practice Halo cannot be saved.
>>
>>743656684

No, players are sick of it and possibly more importantly there's no one left with talent to develop it who would want to.

>>
>>743656684
Nobody dislikes Halo more than the people in charge of making Halo games
>>
>>743658246
Master Chief is a big part of the magic; call it capeshit wank or whatever, but if you have this mythic figure who appears to stand spiritually taller than the lesser men around him then yeah that's obviously going to make the setting feel less mundane when he's around. Not that he's everything, having actual good stories with competent presentation and a great OST matters too, but he sure helped.
>>
>>743656684
>Why does nobody like Halo anymore?
Why does Halo's IP owners not make good Halo games anymore? If they want people to like Halo the solution is make good games.
>>
>>743658708
canonically, his super power is that he's extremely lucky, so it's practically capeshit

>>
>>743658472
Yeah the whole setting was designed to make one game fun to play and even merely expanding on it to make it a trilogy caused some of the magic to be lost; pushing beyond that without having any novel ideas was just crazy. If you really insist on pushing Halo past the one war story it was made to tell, you'd better have a great idea.
>>
>>743658814
>5th
What's the five CE remakes?
>>
Halo 1 through 3 are equivalent to the original three Indiana Jones films. Each different, but great and influential in their own right. Halo Reach is like Indiana Jones 4; its fine, lower in quality for sure, but a decent little side note and a fun send off for the franchise that can be taken or left as is witbout tarnoshing the original three.
Then you have Indiana Jones 5, the worst fucking movie ever made. It exists purely to shit on everything that came before it and turn the entire series into a culturally irrelevant joke where the main characters are depressed fucking losers who want to kill themselves, with bonus points for divershitty vandalism. The rest of the Halo games are like if they kept releasing variants of Indiana Jones 5 over and over and over again. Indy 5 and Halo 4 onwards were also all made by jeets, so theres another thing they share in misery. Is it any wonder no one gives a shit about Halo? The series has been unironically raped to death.

>>743656684

Because Halo 4 killed the series. Reach was contentious but it was still mostly fine, but 4 basically pushed some awful looking Metroid Prime-esque enemies and guns that don't fit the world at all, had us continue fighting Covenant just because of contrived reasons, and introduced a big bad no one cares about. Then 5 happens and they try to get you to care about a character you don't care about while continuing the same problems 4 had. Then you get to Infinite and it's the same problems again on top of retcons to stuff they established years ago.

When it came to general mechanics and multiplayer they for some insane reason wanted to compete with Call of Duty rather than be an arena shooter leading to dumb mechanics like ADS and sprinting becoming staples of the series.

343 does not understand Halo. They never have. They chase trends and want to push their idea of what Halo should be rather than accept Halo for what it is.
>>
>>743658889
>orignal

There are five releases of ce in total
>>
>>743659158
That's a little disingenuous, the gearbox port is just CE (but made less competently lmao), and Anniversary/MCC are the same game.
>>
>>743658893
Halo is the closest and most obvious analogue for Star Wars out there. The classic and compact opening adventure, the much more professional and mature sequel which expanded on things, and the enjoyable but clumsy conclusion where they had lost some of the love and were just trying to finish things.

>4 is a mess of trying to copy other games and missing the point of why people liked Halo in the first place in favor of lore, big cinematics and missing the good points of Reach, enemy AI, gameplay mechanics, etc
>try to get some good will and hype up for 5 over the next three years with MCC, but outsource it horribly between like 4-5 separate studios with no cohesion as the whole thing practically falls the fuck apart back at its original release
>5 is a disaster class campaign of godawful plot and design altogether, not to mention launching with barely any of the overall features a Halo game was expected to, while trying to nickle and dime you now for cosmetics via lootboxes and a P2W system for its star game mode

>abandon literally everything they had prior but a small handful of things to soft-reboot in a shitty, awful way, to go back to basics and still not really be sure what they're even doing there, and now Microsoft contractor standards meant most people that knew the blam/slipspace engine were gone to boot

This one still makes me chuckle.
Ancient humanity finds some powder in an impossibly old secret location.

>>
>people arguing over the lore

The real answer is that better console FPS games started getting made. That's what actually killed Halo. The normies all moved on to CoD and BF and other shit where there's a better progression treadmill to bash their heads against. Halo's more arcadey loop of every match starting everyone off on the same footing lost its appeal.
>>
>>743656684
Not with the deluge of bad games it's gotten.
>>
>>743660148
I wouldn't call CoD or BF better, just that CoD was the Hollywood blockbuster that made buckoo bucks to the point that Activision pretended Ghosts sold better than it really did to try to take best seller away from GTAV. If anything, Halo's pretty much the in-between. But being a strictly sci-fi franchise that became more and more focused on itself internally despite trying and failing to court rival audiences left it in the dust, same for shit like Killzone.
>>
>>743660227
Better or not, it was far more accessible to the masses and ate Halo's lunch for that reason. Halo stopped being the easiest game on the market, so people moved on.
>>
>>743656684
Undo the original sin. Make the Forerunners human, as they were supposed to be, and Halo will be saved. Erase everything that happened after 3 from existence.

As a huge fan of the Bungie originals (except Reach which I think sorta blows overall), I'm happy with this series dying. I can still play the decent ones when I want. As to why nobody likes it, a soulless company designed to milk the IP took it over. That problem will never be solved, so no, it can't be saved.

I wanted to get this game but Xbox and India murdering Id Software and Id Tech to have games made in India using Unreal Engine sucks balls so anything related to Microshit can go fuck itself.
Halo Studios is essentially what Asha Jeet wants for the whole company.
Turn mainland studios into virtual offices where the 10 employees in charge do just some menial marketing while everything is done overseas by jeets who learned Unreal Engine through youtube.

The gameplay is already out and it is essentially Halo 4 complete with sprinting.
The newer levels are exactly what you'd expect, a few arenas with some pathetic level design and some gay horde mode, reusing stuff from Infinite, I think.
The classic levels have their scales fucked up so the game is even shorter and CE aged like milk.

Cool features like dual wielding are here because jeets don't know how do anything.
No multiplayer either because jeets cannot do that either.
I can only hope Snoy fags are not retarded enough to get this but their console has no games, and even this is a step up from the shit they usually play.
>>
>>743659113
>Because Halo 4 killed the series.
No, Halo 5 did.
Halo 4 at least looked cool for a Xbox360 game.
But 343i being managed directly by Microsoft higher ups fuck them good.
That revolving door hiring policy made sure the games could not be made.

I have no idea how the fuck Microsoft thought it was more important to save a few schekels in development by making sure no one could be a full time employee than it was to save the fucking system seller.
Imagine Nintendo being money pinching jews with a main series Mario title.

History is once again repeating with Asha Shawarma.
Executives directly managing everything with the directive to cut cost where they shouldn't except this time is the entire company.
>>
>>743656684
A lot of discussion of millennial games fizzled out
>>
>>743662857
The thing is that people were already not happy with some changes seen in Reach like the DMR and the armor abilities only to see sprinting and I can't remember if 4 had ADS or not. It was the point where people started writing off the series in general, 5 and MCC were just both the straw that broke the camel's back.
>>
>>743660148
>The real answer is that better console FPS games started getting made.
What a dumb take.
Halo was never THAT special but it was a FPS that felt good on consoles and console FPS only got worse overall.
I cannot think of a console series that got better and gameplay wise Halo was still a decent FPS.

It wasn't until Doom 2016 revitalized the genre and launched the Boomer shooter genre that you saw some cool shit in the indie space but on consoles? You are delirious.
>>
>>743663000
4 did not have smart scoping just yet, that was a 5 addition. It was still basically Reach with new armor abilities and the sprint being defaulted by the end of the day, yet the weapon balance was pretty messy and MP having loadouts and perks didn't really enthuse veteran fans. 5 may have returned to the arcade map design and been better balanced, but the mobility functions and smart scope really turned a lot of vets away at the door before the rest of the garbage settled in.
And I say this as someone that actually likes 5 and Infinite MP but never got much into 4 before I shelved my 360 for a long time. 4 was the start of the shitshow, 5 was the game that got people to hang the series up on the memories board and walk away if they didn't force themselves to stick through.
>>
>>743656684
No, and it was a downgrade from day 1. In an Alternate history espionage shooters with rich interactive environments and lots of gadgets are the king of the FPS.
>>
>>743659680
It's actually crazy they didn't just do an asset flip of cooking mama and have it be master chef. They probably left tens of millions of dollars on the table. Hell, it could've been a portable(psp/ds) game and still raked in money.
>>
>>743663000
TRIPS CHECK'EM.

Reach had a fucky multiplayer but it was the single greatest campaign in the series both solo and co-op. The sandbox gameplay was fun. Forge was bigger and better.
But messing up the multiplayer which had been a big draw is like messing the multiplayer of Mario Kart. It was paramount to the series success.
Halo 4 being an insecure game made by people who "hated Halo" was stupid but the series still had some pull despite losing fans.
Halo 5 was unforgiveable.
MCC was trash on launch, it is playable on Steam but nowadays the multiplayer is just as gaped as TF2. I had a better time playing the community Halo 2 relaunch through Project Cartographer.

Someone tell me how fans projects have better anti-cheat than these fucking paid solutions?
Blue Sentinel and Project Cartographer respectively.

Infinite...fuck Infinite.
The Jeet AI demake fucks the art direction as it was expected, as well as the feel and pace adding nothing.

I am shocked Halo Studios is still mostly safe from Asha
Id Software was raped but the studio everyone hates who has done nothing but blunders for 16 years is left alone....
How is that fair?
>>
>>743663471
cuz Id wasn't really involving itself with the rest of Microsoft much, just Machinegames, and were filled to the brim with full paid employees whereas Microsoft's tried to contractor the fuck out of basically everything they've got going. Contractors don't get benefits and healthcare. Halo Studios is filled to the BRIM with contractor shit, that's why they're even shifting to UE5 in the first place. All this, and Id just completely wrapped up on Doom TDA right before the mass layoffs, meaning it was basically "oh they're done with the contractual obligation, slit their throats now before they can even try to start pre-production on something else" crap.
>>
>>743663471
Id getting chopped is fucking tragic. I know that some people on here don't like the new Doom games, but I think taken as their own thing, it's a solid trilogy that did a decent job picking up the torch that Halo and Gears had dropped.

The thing is that Halo had a dedicated fanbase that was still with them through thick and thin being ultimately heartbroken with Infinite which spent the last ounce of good will people had in the franchise.
After that and the TV show the fanbase were the ones who wanted 343i to fucking die the most, the fact that they survived to rape the series once more with a parody of Halo CE is unforgiveable.

At this point Microsoft is gambling Snoys will buy this because they are used to eating shit and the PS5 has fucking nothing.
So even hot piss to a man about to die of dehydration is still something.
>>
Unironically it's because Halo stopped being US military recruitment propaganda and leaned too hard into sci-fi. 2, ODST, and Reach are peak. A lot of the books are great too. But 343 treats this franchise with kid's gloves and makes it too colorful and pretty when it should be gritty. Chief feels like a Marvel hero when he should feel like a CIA black project that can operate operationally like a killing machines. SPARTANs should not have fucking jet thrusts and boost melee silliness they should have knives and rely on a ton of military tools. They should feel grounded and heavy. They should feel like if you put Tom Clancy characters in power armor. This franchise is not Metroid Prime Hunters it's literally the US marines in space.

Thank you for reading my blog.

>>743664360
>Thank you for reading my blog.
No, no, that was good.
I was dumb teen and even I wanted to join the US army to fight for Israel, and I am not even American.
that said Halo had some nuance and tact.
The covenant were not space muslims, which is what happened under 343i.
In fact the first books of the 343i era were written by authors who previously worked in fiction set in the Bush era.
>>
It died with reach. T. 33 year old boomer.
>>
Every single time 343 tries to make a new halo, they decide to neglect the aspect that made halo so strong in the first place. Its sense of community.
How many of 343's games have launched missing baseline features from the rest of the series? The fileshare from 3, ODST, and Reach were absent in Halo 4 on launch.
Halo 5 didn't have forge on launch, it was missing a ton of baseline gamemodes, and good lord, they made matchmaking lobbies useless for connecting with other players. It's been awhile, but I'm pretty sure this is the game that removed post-game lobbies, right? And they started leaning way too goddamned hard into E-sports like that's the core of Halo's base. And that's not even saying that it doesn't have a place in Halo, it absolutely does, but they act like it's all people play halo for.
And then Infinite decided to gutcustomization and paywall the fuck out of it, STILL delayed forge on launch, AND co-op, AND several gamemodes AND they doubled-down on e-sports AND they decided that the campaign is secondary content.

I consider myself an optimist, I found redeeming qualities in all of 343's games.
It took some time but I grew to appreciate Halo 4's story as actually being pretty good. It never met Bungie's highs, but it's probably the best campaign of any of 343's.
I actually, genuinely liked Halo 5's gameplay. No, it didn't really feel like Halo, but I still found it fun, and it was one of the first games where I started experimenting with movement tech because the tech was actually pretty fun to use. The long-jumps with the thruster pack and your ground pound into clamber to reach places other people couldn't was really fun, and didn't require absolute fucking nutso, frame-perfect shit like a lot of similar tricks in something like 3. It was fun to do.
And Infinite, to me, is the most "Halo" feeling halo game 343 has done in terms of gameplay.
But fuck, man.
Actually learn the lessons you claim to have learned from your past fucking mistakes
>>
>>743664360

Reach was great.
Should have continued with that template. Prequels about the war with covenant from different perspectives.
Could have had more ODST and Spartan 3 stuff.

But no some mouthbreather wanted to continue beyond the conclusion of the story and with Chief for some fucking reason. And unsurprisingly its been complete and utter dogshit.
>>
>>743666576
>and with Chief for some fucking reason.
Because Halo 3's Legendary Ending had the shield world plot hook for new grounds. Problem is I wouldn't have even hated it if they weren't so goddamned retarded with it. But you are right, they should've just stuck to more perspectives and ideas instead of trying to continue things. I can't even compare it to like, Universal Century Gundam, because at least some of the sequels of that were good in continuing the timeline, versus Halo just instantly shitting the bed and then pretending it didn't do it.

mcc can be pretty cheap, like $10 on steam, and for that you get the games that pioneered modern console shooters. quality dips and spikes, but they're pretty solid titles if you're into games with regen, two weapon limits, and no sprinting til reach.
i wouldn't recommend jumping into campaign evolved for $50 right off the bat unless you're more interested in basically seeing the tail end of series evolution retroactively applied to the start.

When a game looks this good, it really does feel weird when modern "realism" elements like a slight screen shake doesn't happen when firing. I understand it's meant to replicate classic gaming but either way I don't like it

the Halo SW analogy works great as long as you talk about an original trilogy that got absolutely shit on forever by a ton of sequels made by incompetent people or former leaders who had lost the magic.
it does not work when you try to apply it game by game. Halo 2 was a complete shit show in development, a broken mess they duct taped together at the last moment to ship something. it doesn't even look like it was supposed to, as in the whole art style was supposed to be high contrast with Doom 3 style shadows, but they failed to optimize it in time so had to scrap it completely. fans were also heavily divided on the Arbiter story-line although I always liked it.
Halo 3 on the other hand is the most polished, complete of the three games. it's a true swan song to Halo, the most content- and feature-rich version of Halo to this day. its only problems were one particularly bad mission in the campaign and a nasty desync rubberband issue in the netcode that would occasionally ruin a match. other than these blemishes it was the perfect Halo game in every way.

where you could apply the analogy is to the first and third game's ending. SW 1 and 3, fly around/through a death star and blow it up. Halo 1 and 3, drive through a collapsing, exploding structure to reach a ship you can escape in. not only are 1 and 3 similar to each other here, the Halo scenario is even kind of similar to the SW scenario.

are you sure? bear in mind the ugly, empty forge shit doesn't count as official game content. I'm not counting that towards Halo 3's content either. and bear in mind Reach stands on 3's shoulders. features like Theater had to go from fantasy to reality in the short dev cycle of Halo 3 (2004-2007) and then Reach got to re-use them for free.

I resent Reach because it gutted the physics and AI and ruined the art style. also those baffling third person stabbing animations for assassinations. also in hindsight I hate it for adding sprint. Reach was the trojan horse of newly forming 343 before they were called that. make it more like COD by introducing sprint, knives and loadouts, make it all grimdark, they even ruined the final image output with one of the earliest versions of TAA. Reach is truly the devil hiding in plain sight.

>It also overhauled the multiplayer engine to support the creation of completely new modes without needing to patch the game.
use case? that's a back-end change, not content. did they ever do anything interesting with it?

>And Halo 3 stands on 2's shoulders. That's how ongoing series work.
yes, but 3 had a lot more content than 2. so it actually used the head start and delivered bigger and better. Reach was a step back in some ways and mostly just parity with 3. where parity means it did what 3 did but shittier, with the ShitMR instead of the BR, and with no fucking colors, and with a blurry, ghosting after image every time something moves.

Bloom was an utter failure of a game design. I get their intention but yeah nah you fucked it.
>design theory is pace your shots, punish those that spam shots so that one who "masters" the timing will win
>what actually happened was you spammed at max rpm and let jesus take the wheel
Zero/reduced bloom was a direct improvement for 4v4 because it got rid of the "welp, all my shots missed because they went to the edge of the reticle since he rng'd better and killed me". Utter horror show for BTB though given the DMR is hitscan (don't fucking ackshully me, it's functionally the same as hitscan) and anti-vehicle capable.
God Reach was a piece of shit.
>>
>>743678747
I think what he's trying to say is that if you strip out all the stuff that was included in the series originating with 3, Reach didn't add much. Which I'm not sure I agree with.

As an aside, I don't know why it happened but the forge community stuff was just small a fraction of what it was in Reach compared to 3 and the forge system in Reach is so more developed so you'd think it would bloom but I suppose it's one of these cases where limits cause creativity. Probably also the physics. Also, they should have made a rotating pool of popular community maps be a part of matchmaking (I think they'd doing that now on MCC maybe). I remember when I used to play, I had this idea for an invasion map that would progress through the forge world map, I started working on it but stopped after a while when I realized that no one plays custom games to just play the game as its intended to be, if you want the normal PVP shooter experience you just go to matchmaking. You're never gonna get a lobby together to play fan-made invasion map #23, you get lobbies together to do a bunch of minigames.

When you think about it, the friendslop of today is basically Halo 3 custom games. Except you buy a game for every new map.
>>
>>743679073
>did they ever do anything interesting with it?
Nope. They did a gimmick chess mode, but that's it. For some reason though Bungie thought they'd be able to make the megalo scripting tool public and you'd be able to write your own gametypes and sync it over to your xbox.
In 2010 during prime MS controlling everything on their biggest IP. Fucking delusional.
>>
>>743679073
>Reach downgraded Theater? I didn't even know that.
Well how many times have you tried to watch a clip with multiple people in the lobby?
>added by ODST, not an accomplishment for Reach when comparing to 3.
It was expanded upon greatly, and absent in 3.
That's like saying campaign and multiplayer shouldn't count because the previous games included them.
>use case?
The Camo powerup was shitty early on in the game's life and Bungie changed the kind of camo it provided.
Action Sack modes that were added post-launch.
Different kinds of Invasion for each map.
Bungie did originally intend for users to be able to compile their own gametypes. The scripting itself, while limited in many ways, was still extremely powerful and had a lot of unseen potential.
>that's a back-end change, not content.
Why is it not content?
>yes, but 3 had a lot more content than 2.
And Reach has more content than 3.
>with the ShitMR instead of the BR, and with no fucking colors, and with a blurry, ghosting after image every time something moves.
None of those imply a lack of content.

It's a different generation anon. Our time has passed. Halo peaked at 3 and ended up losing out to COD. Everything since Reach was beating a dead horse. 4 lost a huge chunk of fanbase, 5 didn't help either, and Infinite is just... shit. Attempting to remake CE on UE5 won't win over the original fans (because the art style is gone) and zoomers don't care about millennial shooters when they have Fortnite and COD slop. So campaign evolved is the worse of both worlds. MS will sell off the franchise after CE flops or just bury it indefinitely until the next gen. What they need to do is give Halo the Doom 2016 remake treatment.
>>
>>743679080
>anti-vehicle capable.
I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the human projectile weapons in Reach. The sniper took out the banshee in like 4 hits if I remember right. The DMR wouldn't kill it THAT fast on its own but everyone spawned with one and if you're in the sky you're in line of sight of like half the enemy team at any moment.
that is the only thing I have a real issue with. The banshee would instantly melt to the weapon everyone spawns with, such bad design.
>>
>>743679406
>The banshee would instantly melt to the weapon everyone spawns with, such bad design.
The game was so much better during the brief period before DMR spawns became the default in every game mode
It was balanced like a power weapon because it was one, giving it to everyone was a huge mistake
>>
>>743679406
I think they were looking at data from Halo 3. The Warthog in that game is completely busted with how durable it is compared to its speed and its kill potential. It's miserable to fight against on foot, and it's meant to be a basic common vehicle. Halo 3 even had it spawn on some of the maps intended for 5v5.
The Reach Banshee is one of the most ridiculously broken vehicles in the series. You've never played against anyone abusing it if you think that it's bad design to make it a glass cannon.
>>
>>743679563
>It's miserable to fight against on foot
Halo 3 already nerfed the piss out of vehicles and shitkids complained because they have room temp IQ. There were so many goddamn antivehicle weapons it made vehicles pointless to use
>plasma grenade
>rockets
>bruteshot
>lockon missiles
>snipe the driver
>plasma pistol paralyzes it
>jack the driver if he passes close to it
And to top it off, if there's only 1 person aka the driver who can't even shoot the machine gun as he is driving. WHAT THE FUCK ELSE YOU WANT?
>>
>>743679406
Yeah 4 shots to kill a full HP Banshee. Can dump the mag in a little over 2 seconds.

>>743679563
>The Reach Banshee is one of the most ridiculously broken vehicles in the series.
Only on the 360 release funnily enough. The shit FPS and FOV really favoured the Banshee.
On MCC you are fucking annihilated before you can even do the bomb > flip > bomb > flip ect thing.
>>
>>743679073
But don't you see that that expectation doesn't scale? If you have to bring back all the stuff from the old games, which "don't count", and then also have to add even more stuff on top, you'll be looking at such a long development time - and then the game after that must also do it or be a disappointment. And to be fair, Reach added a lot of stuff that people were begging for. It had space battle (yes, only one space ship in one level, but like I said, there's only so much you can do in one development cycle), loadouts (like it or not, people wanted it - I agree it ruined the series), a much more in-depth customization system, a much higher budget story mode with more setpieces, Let's be honest, the levels in Reach are much easier to remember than 3 where they start to all just be the same thing with different scenery. They're much more experimental and almost all have their own "thing". Invasion was really, really fun. I think you're downplaying the things Reach did right.

If that's what you're saying, I agree that 3's multiplayer was much, much stronger than Reach. But Reach was a good final run. It was basically the fanservice final where people got what they wanted (including piloting a pelican as an easter egg), but it also shows how what the fans want isn't always good for the series. Thankfully, it was the last Halo game and we never got to see it get worse.
>>
>>743679792
>There were so many goddamn antivehicle weapons it made vehicles pointless to use
Most of those were avoided simply by just not getting too close to someone. The laser was ridiculous, but that was one per map and the opening fight determined the outcome because of it. The turret is already stronger than most weapons in the game despite its accuracy and unlimited ammo.

No I remember how you played it. You basically hugged rocks until you go in, pop a guy with the bomb shot and fly away. Anyone who used the plasma machine gun on it was a complete noob. You had to play this way because you would get instantly melted by an army of DMRs if you didn't. Though game balance is involved, is this good design, at all?

>>743679498
They had to do this because everyone missed the precise battle rifle. They tried to return to the assault rifle as the standard weapon at the launch of the game but since they put in the battle rifle as the default in 2 it was a doomed endeavor.
>>
>>743656684
I'm mad that 343 dropped MCC support right as they were starting to make actual good patches that unfucked Gearbox's homosexuality with the CE port.
>>
>>743680323
>you had to move a lot to throw off people's aim so they couldn't shoot you
What an astute observation, anon. The Banshee's tricks and its fuel rod were the problem with the vehicle. It was highly maneuverable and could instakill multiple players at a time. Being able to shoot the thing with the DMR didn't matter because it could dodge your shots. Even with a lobby of mouse players, the average person isn't tracking a Banshee long enough for it to line up a kill shot.
>>
>>743680228
>343i readded bleedthrough in the tu
>didn't adjust anything else so melee was effectively massively buffed
If you took any HP damage at all you were kind of screwed in close quarters. Melee would straight up just oneshot you if you were knocked down to red HP but still had 100% shields or took the tiniest shield damage and were orange HP. There weren't many on map medpacks around either.
>>
>>743680323
Auto starts simply don't work when there is more than one person trying to win the game in a lobby. They tried to make the AR the standard starting weapon, but failed. Its damage in 3 was so low that the optimal strategy with it was to just set up for melee kills. There's a reason why melee was the #2 most common kill.
>>
>>743680590
I don't see the issue. It made health actually matter.
>>
>>743680072
>Most of those were avoided simply by just not getting too close to someone.
Distance didn't matter for the sniper or laser or lockon missiles. Even the plasma pistol charge beam would home in over insane distances. And at distances the turret kinda sucked. Most maps had an inside, you could just go inside and wait them out.
>>
I'm always embarrassed to admit how much time I've spent playing BTB on infinite. It's genuinely fun. Rest of the game is awful.
>>
>>743680478
No in fact you are not moving a lot. You're stalling the banshee into a wall until you see an opportunity to fly in, get a kill and fly out. I know how it works, I did it. It's bad design. You can see the bad design in the fact its default weapon is a noob trap. I think the vehicle made sense when DMRs weren't the default, though if overpowered then this is simple number tuning; the bomb can have a smaller radius of impact, or pop shields and then you have to commit to finishing the kill with the plasma, etc. I do not believe they made the DMR the default in response to the banshee. I don't think they considered game balance very much for BTB.

>Being able to shoot the thing with the DMR didn't matter because it could dodge your shots. Even with a lobby of mouse players, the average person isn't tracking a Banshee long enough for it to line up a kill shot.
I do not believe this for a second. Maybe on controllers with low sensitivity (noob lobbies) but the thing is not THAT fast, the DMR is borderline hitscan and the banshee is pretty big. It also has just a set amount of health. Competent players would immediately nail you the moment you left your rock cover in open sky maps.

>>743680648
Well I think the biggest problem is that the thing has so much fall off damage you literally can't do anything to someone outside low to medium range. I question why they never buffed it, but issuing balance patches wasn't as common at the time I suppose. I think another issue is that people simply didn't like it and liked the rifle options more so they didn't really care about the AR being weak.
>>
>>743680767
>Distance didn't matter for the sniper or laser or lockon missiles.
You need to be a shitty driver to actually get your gunner sniped, missiles can be avoided the more time you are afforded, and the laser is legitimately broken.
PP has the same point as the missiles. More distance means it's easier to dodge.
>And at distances the turret kinda sucked.
Not really. It's barely less accurate than the BR while having the benefit of being able to exclusively aim center mass and can fire indefinitely. Its damage output was also crazy.
>Most maps had an inside, you could just go inside and wait them out.
That's just stupid, because you're conceding a huge part of the map for what is meant to be the standard UNSC vehicle. It's not a tank that takes several minutes to respawn and/or spawns in the middle of the map. It's something that each base gets 1-2 of.
>>
The only map that stands out to me in my memories that the Warthog is a fucking menace on is Standoff in H3.
But that map is awful so it's not entirely surprising that a bad map plays bad.
>>
>>743681014
Well one thing to consider is that you're committing two players to be able to use the warthog, it should be powerful enough to justify it; a guy in the turret can't be picking up the rocket launcher etc. You also need both players to be communicating to maximize its usefulness, something you don't need to if you're just running around with a gun. Get 4 guys in warthogs and suddenly your team and suddenly you only have half your team being able to contest anything indoors. Really map reliant I guess.
>>
>>743680919
Reach was the perfect opportunity to try and make the AR usable. The DMR's TTK was slightly slower than the BR's, and they had visual bloom now to make it more obvious that you were meant to burst fire it. Simply keeping its damage as-is would have given the gun a legitimate purpose, but they decided to make it kill players in 19 bullets(on average, because the damage is literally random) and giving it a massive reticle.
>>
>>743681261
My favourite "are you faggots fucking retarded?" Reach balance moment is the Plasma Repeater.
Everything about it. It's just incredible.
>>
>>743681339
I don't get the guns in halo at all. A ton of them are basically "this gun operates the same way as this other gun, except it's worse". I think the idea of the plasma guns is that they pop shield fast but finish slow. So the purpose of the plasma rifle / repeater is to pop the shield then switch to a projectile weapon for the headshot. But nothing beats the plasma pistol for popping a shield so those guns are literally irrelevant.
>>
>>743681261
>Reach was the perfect opportunity to try and make the AR usable.
This is the one thing I will give 343i credit for
>>
>>743681339
I kind of understand the thought process behind that weapon. It seems clear they wanted Elites and Spartans to each have a roughly similar starting weapon for Invasion. With Elites having more shields, they got a shittier gun so AR vs Elite and PR vs Spartan would be about the same TTK. I think that Invasion is the reason behind most of Reach's design choices.
The problem is that the design completely falls apart not only in every other multiplayer mode, but also in campaign and firefight. It also ignores that Spartans have a headshot weapon off spawn in the Magnum.
>>
It can be saved.

>'Halo' Canceled After Two Seasons at Paramount+
I know it's not the point of this thread, but making a show about the Chief was the dumbest idea.
They could have done basically whatever they wanted if they made their own ODST OC fucker. Could have had space Band of Brothers fighting aliens and shit.
>>
>>743656684
>>
>>743681582
I'll give them credit for 4's AR being pretty good, but I think 5 and Infinite's were way overtuned.
My design philosophy is that regular weapons have 3 design pillars: Damage, Accuracy/Range, and Ease of Use. The most recent AR iterations have all 3.
>>743681574
The Plasma Rifle isn't as good in multiplayer, but it worked fine in campaign because it didn't use up nearly as much time or ammo to break shields.
The Plasma Repeater didn't even do bonus damage versus shields. It was equally good against flesh.
>>
>>743656684
I like Bungie Halo. I hate everything else. Simple as.
>>
>>743681602
I don't get why they didn't bring the Plasma Rifle back up since that thing has been dead ever since dual wielding was introduced in 2.
>>
>>743681664
"Show about ODSTs" is much harder sell than "Show about the main guy". People think Halo they think Master Chief. The problem is Master Chief from the original trilogy is literally meant to be a "ghost in the shell" (from Halo 3 documentary) that gets out of the way and lets you play with the game and a TV show about that doesn't work. Making TV shows about low story video games (in other words, actual video games) is always a bad idea. It works for games that are basically movies anyway, but for a game where the selling point is the gameplay the TV show/movie totally misses the mark is only there to collect money on brand name. Like my mom would always tell me "you love X video game let's watch the movie/TV show together" and I'd go "you wouldn't get it, let's do something else"
>>
>>743681961
It was alright in 3 as an AR upgrade. You could make someone weak to a melee very fast. It retained that kind of usefulness in TU Reach for that same reason, even if it only appeared on a couple of maps.
343 is too focused on making their Own Halo™ to bring back one of the more iconic weapons. They'd rather continue making failed reboots of the Plasma Repeater.
>>
I only liked playing invasion in reach and they ruined it by adding shitty forge maps that look awful and suck dick to play on

Infinite and Campaign Evolved mocap cutscenes look so fucking silly to me because of the mocap Master Chief. His running is fucking hilarious.

desu i like halo quite a bit. i didnt even hate halo 4 when it initially released but i was a child.

never played halo 5. i didnt hate halo infinite's multiplayer somehow. the gunplay was decent enough. vehicles got neutered though. campaign sucked. better game than 4? yeah, but that's a low bar.

halo mcc is decent enough but im sad they stopped updating it for no reason. could've been so much better with true long term support. imagine being microsoft with barely any true exclusives other than halo. and simply not supporting the mcc indefinitely. it really does make you think.

id honestly be okay with an mcc 2 that bundled halo 5 and halo 6, hell throw in the halo wars games and combat evolved remake. just add every fucking halo and add so many features people don't think about anything else.

halo is their magnum opus and they should've went all in a decade ago.

also give us mcc but for gears of war.
>>
>>743656684
They fucked it up by backpedaling every single game. Theres no plot to latch onto anymore. The forerunners are a flop as an enemy faction, the flood are toothless, the covenant are scattered and unimpressive, and the new time traveling aliens had no build up whatsoever.
It went from humanity rebuilding to basically everyone being wrecked.
>>
>>743682443
last time I played MCC it made me want to throw up cause of all the garbage cosmetics. Did people really ask for this?
>>
Halo was only good if you're from some destitute household that couldn't afford a PC to play real PC.
>>
>>743682575
outside of the cosmetics mcc is great. im fairly certain you can disable the cosmetics.

however you are forced to see all the new dogshit armor designs.

and no, nobody asked for this. you can thank 343. the most out of touch developer to ever exist, but they are still capable of pushing out a semi-playable game...eventually.
>>
>>743658814

Fuckall Reach blam exists for the remake. It just looks like player/vehicle physics is all that exists.
The ragdolls aren't blam, the animation system isn't blam, AI isn't blam because that remix mode flat out would not work otherwise, ect.
>>
>>743682664
You can toggle the MCC era cosmetics but they were kinda spiteful about the whole thing.
>you can toggle the cosmetics off :)
>btw it also turns off everything, want to see the cut reach armor or stuff like the robot arm on a plain chest fuck you, you have to see spartan skeletor if you want your mark v[b] brim that bungie cut after reach beta
>>
>>743683661
>they were kinda spiteful about the whole thing.
Not surprising. I imagine it went something like this, they added cut content, people liked it. Then they made their own shit that's completely incoherent with the style of the old stuff. People complained that they were adding things to a game they wanted to be like they used to enjoy, so they went ":^) all right then we'll remove the cut content too if you want it like it used to be". Apparently the whole ethos of 343 is spite at living in Bungie's shadow so this fits.
>>
>>743683052
>AI isn't blam because that remix mode flat out would not work otherwise
What do you mean? Like how squads are set up?
>>
>>743683661
>if you want your mark v[b] brim that bungie cut after reach beta
With all of the additions they made, that one never made it. They made a robot arm for every single chest piece, but couldn't include a single new Mark V[B] variant to restore an attachment that already exists in the game.

>>
>>743683963
Yeah. Blam's AI is good... but not very dynamic. You have to do a lot of set up for them. Firing points, objectives, commands to make them patrol or whatever, ect to make them actually smart.
Different enemy types want to be set up different. IE: a sword elite doesn't need firing points for obvious reasons, flood infection forms don't need anything except a spawn point (they're a completely unique AI behaviour called swarm) and so on.
So just swapping the units out willy nilly on regular blam won't really work that well.

Maybe if you completely dismantle 343 and burn its corpse, blacklist everyone working in it from any position in the games industry, somehow stop the suits at Microsoft from touching it, and then revisit the IP with a spinoff in 2030 it MIGHT have some minuscule chance of being saved.

It's not possible for a revival when the stewards of the franchise fundamentally didn't understand it. When Kiki Wolfkill years back during Halo 4 started blabbing about Master Chief being "human" and not being "a suit of armor", the weeds were already starting to spread. Master Chief, as per Staten, was deliberately written as a suit of armor with a badass voice. They injected some personality in subtle ways, but the whole point is that you, the player, and Master Chief are interchangeable. You want a story with personal stakes, pick literally anyone else. That's why the ODSTs exist as humanity's elite but grounded enough to relate to. The scale is smaller but they are still capable to deal some damage. But then again, MS wasn't trying to appeal to the core players, they wanted the MCU.

These changes to the lore, making Halo T rated to appeal some imaginary wider audience that never came, and the retarded "Spartan story" bullshit for H:I reveal a studio that was spiraling out of control for years until it was eventually dismantled.

Campaign Evolved might be the beginning of that same doomed cycle as it'll be the only new Halo content for a while seeing how multi-player was gutted and a new mainline campaign was put on ice. Not until Asha breaks the studio head over her knee like she did Todd Howard.
