Solar should in principle be the best power source of all because it’s THE source, everything that happens on Earth is solar radiation with extra steps. The issue (and it’s the issue with wind too) is not the power generation, it’s power storage. Battery technology just fucking sucks, it’s always sucked. Power need scales inversely with solar radiation levels, the lights all get turned on as the sun gets lower in the sky. You need a way to spin up power on demand to make the electrical grid work and solar can’t do that because we can’t turn the sun off and on at will.

Solar’s current viability is tied to the presence of fossil fuel turbines on the grid. It can work to reduce load on those turbines when solar radiation is abundant. But you can’t take all the fossil fuel turbines away because they’re the only ones handling variable load and keeping up the power supply when the sun is down, because battery tech is too fucking useless for solar to work on its own no matter how many panel arrays you build.

Our best tools for storing solar energy, I shit you not, are using solar power to pump water uphill into a reservoir and then running hydroelectric power by releasing that water when we need to spend the stored charge. If that sounds like a convoluted clusterfuck that’s because it is, but that’s somehow still better than any battery we can manufacture.

It requires a very intensive process to extract and refine. It's also incredibly volatile to store and transport, but somehow we convinced the world into setting up networks to transport this shit. Then when you finally get this valuable resource, you literally burn it away and are forced to buy more of it. Even if rare earth minerals in batteries are a pain to extract, at least you can recycle them indefinitely once they are out of the ground.

That isn’t how the electric grid works. Power is produced for consumption in real time (well, at the speed of waves propagating through wire). Turbines at power stations literally spin up and down in real time to match pull on the grid. It doesn’t matter how much excess you generate if you can’t store it effectively, the issue isn’t purely “we need the lights on when the sun isn’t out to power them” it’s that ALL solar electricity has to be battery banked before use, not just the stuff used when it’s dark out. The environmentalist argument goes “we should focus on solar because fossil fuels are destroying the environment” but I’m saying even if they don’t, we KNOW fossil fuels will run out. And, crucially, that also means their cost must rise as time goes on, because it will become harder and harder to acquire them the more that fixed supply is reduced. There comes an economic tipping point where it makes more financial sense to just use solar than invest in the dogshit EROEI of fossil fuels, but once we hit that point, society is gonna be fucked because of the climb in energy costs. Why wait until things are catastrophic? Why not invest the time and resources in developing solar technologies NOW, so that the economic incentives line up in favor of the long-term solution sooner? And clean energy used to be a solution when energy demand hadn't doubled to support the slop machines. Sure go ahead and build a field of solar cells under which nothing can grow, then the dust bowl will blot out the sun. Build a dozen new nuclear reactors, you need to cool them with the already dwindling aquifers and rivers and if they don't they blow up.

OpenAI is laughable as a profitable company. They have no clue how to monetise it. They snatch a Facebook advertising executive just to place banner ads at the end of prompts, and that’s failing. Their hardware is also going be blocked by Apple. The model has also hit its limit and their lie of AGI by next year will bite them in the ass. A mathematical algorithm that runs off Nivida GPUs isn’t going to gain consciousness. There is no understanding from these chatbots, it’s all just Markov chains and some fancy maths. Quants are not using because it’s not reliable. It’s sort of like the hype around 3D TVs or Virtual Reality Headsets. We are still too early in the technological advancements but everyone has FOMO and throws money at the next big thing.
