They don't want to run the risk of Poodroid supremacy leading to the abandonment of PC as a platform for games and VR games, because that would mean needing to negotiate with Google and whichever company is shitting out the Android spin in question.
They saw the damage done in the 2000s and 2010s by bad APIs like Xinput and Operating systems like Android and Windows 10 and are trying to get ahead of that by promoting Linux and good APIs like SDL3.
>>743690134

>No lighthouse support
Probs not. I know lighthouse tech seems to be on the way out in general, but I'm not ready to give it up yet.
If reviews come out saying that somehow the frame can see your hands moving without you looking at them, I might consider it.
>>
>>743690650
Yes, it's kind of looking like this specific kind of pancake lens + screen optic stack is pseudo-standardized from what I recall.
So i guess you can just wait for Doublechink knockoffs that just slap this optic stack into the cheapest package they can put together, like the Chink knockoff 3D printer boom.

Aren't the Quest 3 controllers like that?
>>
>>743691032
There's nothing stopping you from slapping a tracker onto it. There are also tools for synchronizing tracking ecosystems to get the lighthouses to work with other VR systems.
Apparently that's how some people wanted to get their WMR headsets working.
I don't think lighthouse tech is on its way out necessarily since there's still headsets that want to use it, but dedicated support in headsets might be.
>>
>>743691034
I also realize I'm in the minority here with wanting a tethered headset so that also makes its harder to find a suitable upgrade to my Index.
>>743691032
I'd be more concerned with the wireless bullshit because anyone who believe their 6 gorillion niggahertz wifi dongle or a router is going to be actually lossless in quality and input is a genuine retard.

>>
>>743691017
Its definitely a process, one step at a time, steam frame is going to be worth nothing no matter what price it is, if I had bought a $1500 gun it would still be a $1500 gun or more later
Like you said though, we need our bullshit sometimes, I just pray its not a mistake buying this to use with my 4080 rather than just buy a better gpu and skip the vr for now, last one I had was the vive like 10 years ago

You don’t need to fuck around with those lighthouses anymore and Frame has modern pancake lenses so you can look around using your eyes instead of turning your head

Meta will randomly brick your headset with a (((firmware update))) and refuse to accept responsibility for it. You can open as many support tickets as you'd like but they're just going to ignore you or suggest some useless "fixes" in jeetspeak until you give up.

Just be glad you experienced it, anon. VRC was kind of a bad place for me because of all the women looking for connection (I'm married) and because it's so easy to just drop into a party at any hour of the day/night when everyone else in the house is asleep and pound down copious amounts of booze. Booze and women looking for men is such a bad combo for married men. Especially when they are chasing you, you are not even giving them the time of day, further increasing their desires, they start posting pics and it turns out they are hot, and the booze makes you give the wrong signals.

A cool party trick that isn't worth the thousands upon thousands of dollars to put a simulator setup together for. Especially those dedicated racing sims chairs. I think I paid like $500 for my Index used, and I don't think I've put 500 hours into racing and flight sim games combined in my entire life.
>>743696358
I thought about playing Todd's games in VR but apparently neither Fallout 4 nor Skyrim are turn-key, you still have to mod the fucking shit out of them to get the full experience. I played a couple VR shooters, those were fun.
>>
I wonder how quick the setup is.
No lighthouses, no cable and a wi-fi dongle should in theory mean you could play it anywhere* (*that is inside).
Which would make it ideal to bring along places.

It costs 300 bucks to get a racing wheel with pedals, you clamp it to a 20 dollar desk and you have a "simulator setup", if you want to get fancy you spend 40 bucks to get a shifter.

Nah man, they are there. If you are single and looking for a novel experience, I 100% recommend you go find some women in pc-only worlds and find a 21-29 year old chick to be friends with. If you can talk to women without scaring them away and you aren't a disgusting beast, you could 100% hookup. They are there, and 90% of the guys there are absolute fucking chump simps. I often found them in game worlds or drinking worlds. Unfortunately, there's a fair amount of married women trying to fuck around too.

Just try not to get too carried away with drinking and vrc, because it's easy to turn it into a habit.

No, I legitimately just went to treat it like going to a bar without having to drive. However, the women in that game could fucking smell it or some shit because they would always gravitate towards me, and being drunk usually, I would chat with them. I think it was just the fact that they felt comfortable since I wasn't actively pursuing anything, but then would start catching attraction after having a chat and trying to be friends, trying to hang out when I would show up, etc. I don't play anymore because it was becoming too much of a hassle/danger while drunk.

Quest Pro controllers (which can be used on a Quest 2/3 iirc) could, but it came at the cost of shit battery life and its own slew of problems since you now have controllers with a Snapdragon processor/ram/etc doing its own SLAM tracking and then having to synchronize that with the headset's own relative position.

Desktop view got working at all on linux with wayland just a few days ago. The software isn't done. They'll never let anyone review these if you can't use desktop on either the frame or steam machine.

There's no sign review units are out, everyone actively denies having one instead of silence

FCC hasn't received all the documents they need to give approval

There's some train game sale going on steam right now

I think it was more expensive before the ram crisis and it will be less expensive after. The memory and storage on it has gotten more expensive but not at the rate of what's in the steam machine. Don't expect a huge difference though. Like $950-$1000 instead of $1050

I think these glasses will disappoint despite great contrast and resolution. Expect $2000 and shit FOV. I don't even know what the controller situation is going to be. Meta puffin might use quest 3 controllers because they will probably promote it as a controllerless device. Regardless steam frame controllers will be the only good controllers for a while. I'm really tired of no menu button in PCVR. I'm really tired of no left and right bumper. I'm tried of no dpad and not enough face buttons that make flat to VR mods have retarded bindings. Frame also has dual stage triggers and grips. VR developers keep putting retarded functions on the easy to press grip buttons. We need the squeeze back like on index.

Extremely uncomfortable for sitting down if not just fully reclining, not a very seemless pcvr or steam vr experience, and it's basically like clamping a brick to my face.
>>
>>743713782
SteamVR slowly gets updates from valve, how long has it been since you used it? Or you can try virtual desktop. Usually the seems and hiccups for me are on the quest side that valve can't fix.

Frame seems to be perfectly comfortable from influencers/VR press giving impressions, I don't trust all of them but it's unanimous and I've heard criticism for the frame from the same people. Namely quest 3 quality displays.

The downsides of being in the metaverse are exaggerated. It was a shite deal about 4 years ago, and it was pretty bad when they were pushing horizon as the focal point, but now that they cut that out and fired lots of people, it's just a solid headset now.
I deactivated my Facebook a while back, not even sure you need it anymore.

But to be clear that period where you definitely needed a FB account and if you made one just for VR it would brick you for trying to circumvent it, that was utter bullshit and I don't blame anyone who noped out at that point permanently

disabling the system bloat created by zuccjeets which is constantly running in the background and will eventually soft brick your headset if you use the headset with blocked internet access (ask me how i know)
>>
>>743712090
The CV1 had a rigid strap that evenly distributed the weight of the headset and the actual display unit didn't weight much at all.

The frame is using the same elastic band bullshit as the quest which does not support the torque from the headset sticking off of your face, it doesn't matter if the weight is split in half, what you'll get is pressure on your cheekbones with a weird tugging feeling from the top strap. PCVR needs to go back to rigid halo headbands.

>>743714223
It's not about the weight, it's that it has no support so it constantly twists down and applies pressure to your cheekbones.

There is nothing more effective or comfortable than a top strap, especially as weight goes up. Halos are shit unless the headset is so light that it doesn't matter if its a halo or not. With a top strap you don't need hardly any pressure on the face, just enough for stiction.

Without a top strap rigid could be better but it does add some weight. I'm sure there will be numerous $50 ones on amazon.

Well the entire thing was advertised with "Play all your games on the VR headset" so if it isn't applying some sort of wrapper like UEVR to them, it's just a fancy pair of XR glasses with a regular ass VR headset, for what will likely be 1.5x if not double price.
I really don't see the value in it. Certainly not to start. And with how poorly my steam controller performs (no xinput in fucking 2026) and how shit the steam machines have been (rrod-ing lmao) I'm significantly more wary of supporting valve which is a huge fucking shame.
>>
I have $1.2K set aside for this thing and that better fucking be enough. I have not been willing to starve myself just to get my hands on it.

>With a top strap you don't need hardly any pressure on the face, just enough for stiction
With my halo headset I have completely taken off the facial gasket and have nothing touching my face. It basically hovers in front of my eyes. Slipping isn't a problem either because it has a honeycomb rubber pattern on the back that sticks to my head even if I don't tighten it.
>>
I just want to know the price, I promised my boyfriend I'd buy him one and want to know how much it'll hurt.
>>
>>743719483
with the price of the steam machine, and even the increase to the deck, I would be very shocked if it comes in under 1k. I'm realistically expecting 1.2k minimum, probably 1.5k for a model with fuller storage.

No its microoled glasses with a compute puck. I think meta said they will be showing something on both puffin and Q4 for their September event, but Q4 is supposed to be further out than puffin, like 2028

September is the meta connect event, so that would be Q3. But yes they mentioned they will be showing something off. I doubt they will give many details. Afterall most of their prototypes had to be abandoned because Valve made eye tracking standard.

>With my halo headset I have completely taken off the facial gasket and have nothing touching my face. It basically hovers in front of my eyes.

This is good and bad. You are able to ignore the headset unless you have lightbleed. But the real problem is headsets with normal weights have inertia and wiggle when you turn your head. It's not just melee fighting where this is a problem either. Vehicle simming can get your head turning fast.

>Slipping isn't a problem either because it has a honeycomb rubber pattern on the back that sticks to my head even if I don't tighten it.

I've been there done that. It sticks to my hair, but then my hair slips so it's pointless. You are completely dependent on balance to make it work so you'll be buying the battery halo straps. This isn't a flaw though because you need a counterweight and extra battery life anyway. I'm just saying the rubber is a meme unless you have really short hair in the back, like buzzed. You could probably switch back to pleather so dust won't stick to it.
>>

Yeah I actually don't know the difference between puffin and phoenix. I can't remember if it was a name change or two different headsets.
>>
>>743719850
>Is it worth it for porn at this point?
I don't think so, because it is hard to jack off while wearing a headset and using controllers. That said it has its sexy moments. Like in Blade and Sorcery when you capture a female warrior and hold her down, slap her ass. Feels good man!
>>
>>743719957
Phoenix is the Quest 4, thought some call it the Quest Pro 2. Puffin is more like widefield mixed reality glasses. Not the size of normal glasses. Seems more like hololens.

You're better off finding a gf and banging. I will say, the weird gf experience 360 3d irl vr videos are kinda weird and will fuck you up mentally if you are in a bad spot, but are interesting from a technical standpoint (plus the lady is hot as fuck). It's not porn, but feels like it was made for lonely dudes.

VRchat is not an excuse, its full of autistic anti-social faggots. And not in the good way.

What is the reason to even get a new headset?

The only good porn games for it are modded skyrim, Anthro Heat and Vrit-a-mate.

This is tame, the real gooners beat their meat to fast paced HMVs/PMVs while shocking their cocks with repurposed estim machines driven by custom waveform tracks. Some even have diy buttplugs that can tell if you're getting close to cumming and slow down/stop. (apparently your butt clenches as you get close and you can measure the clench)

I fell down the rabbit hole and made myself the SR6. (Didn't get into the weirder shit like estim.) Waste of time mostly, it's too cumbersome to set up if you're not going to leave it mounted to your desk like a fucking weirdo, it's too loud and a lot of the free content is shitty hmvs/pmvs, almost everyone tries to charge for putting a script out for porn videos. It works pretty good for stuff like that 3D "game" that I can't remember the name of where you do poses and animations. I think there's also a plugin for unity or unreal that ties the motion to a bone in the scene.

are there affordable hobbyist gloves with haptic feedback? I want to be able to feel characters when I grope them in games.
I guess other affordable haptic stuff would be cool to know about too.
>>
>>743742931
gloves not so much
there's a couple of expensive project things that replace your controller and have tracked gloves but they don't have haptics afaik
companies like bHaptics make a slew of haptic things. Like a vest, a facial interface, and I think they also have some things you wear on your wrist that vibrate too.
The amount of support for them falls off once you start looking past the vest.
you can definitely use all of their accessories in skyrim though and they have a support list on their website.
but that's just vibratory motors

there's also the uwusuit that shocks you through electrodes, don't think they have anything for hands.

what your describing exists in enterprise tech. A loud backpack that pumps compressed air into gloves that can restrict your hand to simulate grabbing objects. It's like $7k and obviously you have to create you own support for it since it's designed for like aircraft mechanic simulations or some shit
>>
>>743743186
>gloves not so much

I imagine its another one of those "Technology is held back by worthless patents by companies that won't sell products for average consumers" scenarios, just like with 3D printing.
>>
>>743743405
possibly
if you have a 3d printer there are some diy haptic gloves that use string and little motors to restrict your fingers.

i imagine there's very little support for em and I have no idea how well they work

I have the bhaptics vest and it's pretty good. Games with native support take no effort, you just put it on and it works.
funny enough a lot of games that have come out over the last year haven't included support, but most mods usually do. (because it's fairly easy to implement I guess)
even has an audio mode if there's no support you can tie it to an equalizer so it vibrates sectors at certain audio frequencies

How is this going to be less than $1299? I don't see it. PSVR2 is good enough for a third of the price too.

The issue I'm having is that the controller won't work unless I run steam as admin. Windows detects it so my USBs work but steaminput doesn't work unless it's admin and there's no way I'm running steam as admin. I've been going back and forth with steam support for a month now and they have no solution and would rather just refund it.
>>
>>743750680

a refund is not help. a refund is admitting that you can't help or fix it and just give up. the fact that they were so eager to offer a refund within a week without even bothering to try to help me troubleshoot just shows that they don't care. they know this problem exists and all the support they can offer is just to tell me to post it on the forums and not offer me any real support on what may be causing it.

>>

So you would like them to instantly fix an issue that they first have to pinpoint and despite being upset that it doesn't work, you have no desire to take them up on the refund they've offered you.
Have I got all of that right?

i would have preferred them to offer me some things to test on my end to solve the issue but all that they can offer is "post on the forums". It sounds entirely like a "not my problem" issue and would rather just give me a refund instead of helping me fix it.

>>743751760
I would rather have a device that costs $100 to work. Steam releasing a controller in 2026 and it not working on all devices is not okay. I have a very standard w11 setup and it's not working. Idk why you faggots are defending valve, if this was any of the big 3 console companies releasing a $100 device you would be shitting on them nonstop but valve gets a free pass because ???.

This issue has been known since launch and who knows if they knew about it even before then. It's been 2+ months and they can't offer any personalized support and give some things for me to test test on my end. They just give generic responses and tell me to be patient. This is not okay for any kind of expensive tech.

they're getting a pass from me because the controller I have works on my setup which leads me to believe you have some retarded shit happening on your end, which is unfortunate and I hope the problem gets fixed either from you figuring it out or valve figuring it out, but the main factor here is that you seem like a bit of a dickhead

I do think that xinput not at least being an optional driver you could install or something is retarded but with Steam the controller just werks even on my glued together w10 iot ltsc. If you don't want to have Steam open to use it there's third party tools on github.

Because you installed something retarded on your PC that's hijacking the controller, and they can't tell you what you have installed.
>>
>>743755363
looks like a full kit is averaging $500 on ebay. Given the extra equipment you'd need to use an Index like light-stands, I think my estimate is still pretty reasonable. Maybe closer to $400 given that it can function as a stand-alone computer.
>>
>>743756160

I have a pretty basic setup with W11. The only thing I have installed that requires elevated access that I use frequently is cheat engine but that doesn't run in the background. I even booted my PC is safe mode and the controller still wouldn't get picked up unless steam was running in admin. I also did a clean reinstall of steam. The last 2 things I could try is to update my mobo bios and do a clean reinstall with windows but it's such a pain with TPM bullshit these days.

Maybe I had to set up a Facebook account a couple of years ago, I genuinely don't remember, I just got set up and then never thought about it.
I play offline, attached to a VR casting router that's wired to my pc for wireless steam games.
I'm just saying consider it, it's right there and I've had great fun most days for nearly 3 years now
>>
>>743756786
>Different apps
By which I mean, you can use virtual desktop, steams app, metas own app, probably others.

>Return to base
I should also clarify, one of my controllers partly died from sweat, it had a button act like it was stuck in. I sent it away and got a replacement controller within 2 weeks. I just needed to talk to jeet support on WhatsApp and provide proof of purchase. Overall a decent experience.

>VR casting router that's wired to my pc for wireless steam games
Do you have a quick rundown on how much work/money this is to set up? I've been using the link cable for years and want to switch but i don't want to compromise on bitrate/delay for wireless convenience
>>
>>743756387
I'd bet on the windows reinstall working, but it's really the nuclear option. You ever try to get a dualshock running or map keys to a controller or something? My guess would be you installed a modded driver for some reason. You could try uninstalling whatever the device pops up as in device manager without steam running, if that doesn't work you could try and go in and delete the dinput and hid drivers then using dism and sfc to reinstall them from scratch, but if you don't really know what you're doing that might just end with you reinstalling windows anyway
>>
>>743757098
>but i don't want to compromise on bitrate/delay for wireless convenience
you don't want to switch then

The first time I had to return my deck they were a gigantic pain in the ass to deal with. I had to do like 3 weeks of trouble shooting with proof for them, then when I finished they passed me off to another guy who told me to restart and do the whole thing again. Eventually I asked why they were wasting so much time and they just accepted the RMA request.
>>
>>743758067

Steam hardware quality is horrible. Index needs 3 controller replacement a year and new cable every other year
>>
>>743759001
I bought a launch product near day 1, valve also has shit QC.
>>
>>743757098
Not much maybe 30 bucks, I just bought the cheapest ipv6 or whatever router, that could transmit a lot of Mbps, I connect it to my pcs ethernet, and it broadcasts just as a normal WiFi router, I connect to it with my headset and then run streaming over air rather than via cable.

It's the same as cable after that for me, just a one time setup.
I'm sure there's a smart way to bridge it with my PCs WiFi so that I can get my quest online but it's not a must for me as I only play singleplayer stuff
>>
>>743758047
The computation, RAM and storage cost to decode video or track things in positional space is not the same as the cost to play videogames. It needs to be there to beta test ARM steam OS, that's the only reason its there.
>>
>>743757748
>but i don't want to compromise on bitrate/delay for wireless convenience
>you don't want to switch then
Unless anon has that red kind of USB (3.1?) a modern router will give just as high a bitrate.
When I'm wired it's with one of those, my experience is about 95% the same with wireless, in terms of perceivable bitrate. Maybe sometimes my blacks get crushed for a second or two, but that's about it.
>>
>>743759947
I should add, my quest doesn't live offline, because it has to keep version parity with the meta app on PC. You'd have to keep both sides offline to avoid ever updating, but in my view, they've improved more things over time than they've broken, particularly pass through picture quality is really good compared to 3 years ago on the same hardware
>>
>>743760064
>The computation, RAM and storage cost to decode video or track things in positional space is not the same as the cost to play videogames
it's very similar unless you design your own chip
this is just a standard phone chip, which likely costs less than designing and making a more barebones chip

>>
>>743760365
You don't need a powerful chip that can handle games, 8GB of RAM or 500GB - 1TB of storage for that and this is going to be the main cause of the price discrepancy with their original target.
>>
>>743757548
i've tried all of that of individually uninstalling all the HID drivers and rebooting steam. I have an xbox controller that works fine, it's just this steam controller with steaminput is a menace. for whatever reason. I plugged the steam controller into my windows surface pro through a hub and it worked through that for whatever reason so it's not the controller.
>>
>>743758025
>it wekrs on loonix
What's wrong with that?
I'm a Linux user, so I want my hardware to work natively on it.
