I feel like PS1 romhacking and translation has been speeding up. I wonder if there's been better documentation in the decomp era on how do these things better. I know the guy whose been doing the SotN decomp has been writing out extensive documentation on how to do things. Interesting though. Onto the backlog it goes.

idk just played a few mins to check the engrish
it's too awkward, obvious ai slop
combat feels like generic hack n slash to me, there's no lock on like oot or des
environments look nicely detailed but draw distance is silent hill tier, makes the dungeon more claustrophobic i guess
i suppose it's closer to king's field or hack n slash like the old might n magic games than zelda really, don't expect non linearity and complex puzzle dungeons

Its 3D Brandish
You can kinda tell on the PS1 and PS2 dungeon crawlers if its more Brandish/YS or more Zelda depending on how extensive or stiff the animation system is. And following the lineage, we get games like Evergrace which is further down the lineage trying to improve on the PS1 attempts.

based on a mostly finished script (things related to the pocketstation feature are untranslated) of a cancelled project but then the new guy went back and old englishified the script for some reason
>>
File: 1784586961071.png (571 KB, 1401x1891)

I'm going to repost this from /vr/ since it seems relevant.

In short, there was an old, nearly finished project that was abandoned. The abandoned project had the script completely human translated. They just couldn't get it into the game. Someone took that old project and finished it. Instead of just inserting the script as it was, they edited it to read like it's Old English (hence the "The script is a localization more than a strict translation." comment on the download page).

Right before this new guy announced they finished their version, the team behind the old project unabandoned the original project. They're still planning on finished their version, so soon there will be two versions of the translation. The one that's out now that is "localized" to be Old English, and another soon-to-be-released one by the original team that is not "localized" and reads normally.

They don't directly host content anymore. You have to link to another site that hosts the download.
>>
Oh that's really fucking cool.
I've seen a few projects to do this that all died over the years. Its cool that someone actually finished it.
That being said a big part of the magic for me was playing Brightis and not knowing what anyone was saying or how to play. It felt like playing PS1 games as a dumb kid again. Putting together my own story, deciding for myself who were my friends and who were the bad guys. Also figuring out how to buy new skills and equip them, trying them one by one and being totally surprised by what they did.

I think I would have enjoyed the game less if that magic was missing.

Still. Really cool game. Anons should play it if they haven't because its very fun.

>>
>>743712310
Thanks
>>
>>743694475
Balance was like that. You have an absolute shitload of skills in brightis, like actually mindboggling for a PS1 game. It wasn't like "here's fifty attacks that are the same but do more damage" but instead you had directional attacks so you can hit guys behind you, big swings for crowd control, wall splatting attacks, there's even this sickass aerial front flip attack you can use to jump enemy attacks and hit them on the way down.
Its vaguely like severance blade of darkness where if you just mindlessly button mash you wont hit shit, so you gotta do positioning and pick the right attack for the range and angle.
Of course that does mean if you just wanna chop up some dudes you've got a handful of attacks that are just "chop up the cunt standing in front of you" bread and butter skills.
>>
>>743695691
Huh. I never made that connection but it is similar.
Doesn't have Superior Limb Based Combat but if you play DBTS on auto mode the combat does feel the same.

>>743701886

>>
>>743691230
>The script is a localization more than a strict translation. Brightis reads like a fable, so the English leans slightly archaic where the world calls for it, the way a knight ought to sound rather than the way a textbook would render him. The translation takes few liberties with the story itself, but line by line it favors what reads well over what maps word for word.

Hmm...

just got out of the tutorial dungeon
controls are good for a ps1 game, actually uses the sticks for movement and camera control instead of d pad
graphics (except for draw distance) and music are great, oozing with soul
combat is simple for now but it looks like there are alot of moves to unlock and there is magic, cant speak on difficulty yet. there is no button to lock on but it seems like there is a soft lock when looking at and standing near an enemy
closest comparison is zelda i’d say but with some light rpg stats and leveling up so i’d play it if that sounds good to you

Quintet were barely involved with this. It was developed co-developed by Quintet, Shade and Arc Entertainment.

I'm gonna fire up the Japanese version and just play that coz i don't trust this AI LLM """relocalization""" crap that passes for translations these days. I know enough jap to play games so i should be fine. Plus i have a 240p CRT Emulation setup so i'm gonna crank up the signal blur with the GTU50 shader to hide the PS1 rendering jank and see what the game is like.

It's got terrible user ratings so i'm not holding my breath for anything decent.

Proof? Also Shade was just a subsidiery team of Quintet led by Koji Yokota, a former Falcom and Quintet employee. From what I can tell, Arc Entertainment was basically a development support division from Sony who helped several studios develop games for Playstation rather than being actual lead developers.

Been a long time since I beat it. From what I remember you can pretty much customize everything to your liking. There are predefined command inputs that you can slot certain attacks into, e.g. back, forward, attack.

There are also charge up attack where you have to simply hold down the attack button for a certain amount of time and then release for them to come out. You can have several of those on one button staggered time, e.g. one move for holding down 1 sec and another for holing down 2 secs. A little timer appears at the bottom of the screen showing you how long you've been holding down the button for.

I'm fairly certain you can switch out all your normals too. But some of these moves are rather pricey iirc.

There are some magic spells as well but the upgraded ones shown here you need to unlock through a side quest.

I don't need to explain basic terminology on this board. That's on you.

>An autolock mechanism typically functions in one of two ways:

>Soft-Lock (Aim Assist): Your attacks or bullets naturally bend or curve toward an enemy as long as you are generally facing them. You can still move freely, but the game helps your aim.

>Hard-Lock (Camera Lock): By pressing a button (like pushing in the right joystick on a controller), your camera sticks directly to an enemy. As the enemy moves around the battlefield, your camera spins automatically to keep them in the center of your screen.

Honestly, I don't know why people are losing their shit over the localisation; assuming every line has been flared up in the same way. The wording is just changed to sound slightly more archaic in English, it's not like they're replacing genders or inserting trans rights every 3 lines. The exact same meaning is being conveyed.

I don't have an inherent issue with the conceptual direction of the dialog, but (at least early on), I've noticed a little too much reliance on Yodaspeak as a lazy way to convey "ye olde" dialect, and a couple weird mistranslations like the big villain saying "I will have all the magic macguffins, WHATEVER THAT MEANS" (the all-caps is the actual wording, the rest is paraphrased).
