Why does Reddit love Octopath Traveler 2? Its r/JRPG darling game
>>
How do you even know that? Stop going to fucking reddit you dumbass
>>
>>743723785
Because OT2 is a modern fucking masterpiece. I'd say the same for Rebirth, Triangle Strategy, and Unicorn Overlord.
In my head Xenoblade 1 is as well, but its not super modern anymore.
>>
>>743723785

reddit's entire identity revolves around uplifting below average things so that they can believe their below average lives matter more than they do
>>
OT2 is my second favorite jrpg after fe3h.
>>
>>743723785
because it's a more palatable version of a typical SaGa game. perfect for pretentious hipsters.
>>
>>743726534
it kinda shows just how far our standards have fallen that games that would be considered perfectly average are now "modern fucking masterpieces" because everything else is so shit
>>
That desperate for an OT2 thread, huh? wish you luck.
>>
>>743727897
I agree with you these games are average at best nothing to write home about but competent enough that you don't feel ripped off when you purchase them and to be honest that's the best most can hope for in modern gaming

Lots of QoL
- 2x battle speed toggle
- skipping scenes (and missing story-related banters) can all be accessed in the journal regardless of whether you saw them or not
- passive skills for grinding are much more easily accessible from base jobs
- money, exp, and jp are thus much easier and faster to get
- difficulty overall for main game tuned lower
- more animations for enemies and playable characters (and even NPCs)
- story pacing varies now instead of only OT1's city > arbitrary path action + dungeon > boss, with some with no bosses, enemies, or dungeons
- a lot of upgrades to performance and world design since CURVES and various inclines exist for the environment
- crossed path chapters
- an actual endgame and actual final boss
- epilogue
- credits roll at a sane time, not immediately after your main character's final story
- extra battles (free dlc) on the title screen for a far bigger challenge than anything the game can throw at you
It's an overall better and more palatable package since OT1 was basically a beta in comparison.

I fucking dropped it. The concept of breaking the story into 8 people not landed with me. As soon as i got into story of one character, the game makes me play another, and another, and another. Also after 28h there was still no proper end point of the game. I was still in the individual stories and didn;t see any common goal the characters would fight for.
Dunno maybe i'm old but i prefer more linear stories. Also if there were 4 characters instead of 8 it would be more enjoyable imo.
But have to say, music is amazing.
>>
>>743729989
>28h
The game's longer than this unless you're doing a replay and know what you're doing.
I'm already at lvl80 with all stories beaten at 37h on my second playthrough.
>>
>>743729989
>didn;t see any common goal the characters would fight for.
There's some foreshadowing in most of the stories, but after beating all 8 of them, the final chapter/arc unlocks when you activate it and there's a an actual final boss for the game.
This is compared to OT1 whose actual final boss was also a superboss and was also crammed into a sidequest chain of all things.

Perfectly sterile for millennials whose idea of a jrpg is 4 niggas in a row. It’s funny because I played through every single pixel remaster FF, and every FF game before 7 completely mogs Octopath in basically every way. I was going to make a list but there’s really too many things I’d say, so I’ll just state the biggest problem - it’s fucking soulless and generic, same problem as Bravely Default which is made by the same dev btw
>>
Niggas be like this aesthetic is fire fr fr

>>743728095
tell me why it's better than the average and compare it to the classics
challenge: don't use any insults
>>
>>743729246
It's a improvement in almost every way, some improvements being more marginal then others. Honestly the only thing i would hold against it is is the lack of Sorcerer, I didn't really mind the other Extra Jobs being replaced (And Inventor being available early and progressing the way it did was nice).

It is still the same "formula" at hearty though, just with added belles and whistles to distract from it more. If you disliked looping the map to do characters episodes and small sidequests as you do then that's still what's happening in 2 and you will still probably hate it, but that's because they aren't gonna discard the whole premise of the game.
>>
>>743729498
QoL alone makes it better than the original.
However the characters are now less interesting.
Dungeons are still hallways with a boss in the end with no interesting events inside.
This is not saying Octopath the only one guilty about it, even Suikoden has hallway dungeons and I criticize it for it.
Crossed paths are boring as fk, just small talks between characters that remind me of FE Awakening & Fates support, doesn't really make the world more interesting.
Overall yes it's better but still below the standards of what qualifies as a modern turn based FF successor.
II don't care about Saga games btw, they are worse than FF games in terms of systems and writing)
>>743729650
I agree

Triangle Strategy has units that are all incredibly varied from one another. You also can't grind to get remove the strategy aspect from combat.
Tactics Ogre and FFT are both guilty for encouraging being a faggot and drawing out fights to level up, foolish character building and grinding. They aren't strategy games
>>
>>743723785
I hope 3 will have the same sprites style as 2, if not even improve them further, 0 having the same smashed and slammed sprites as 1 was so disappointing
>>
>>743730739
>Triangle Strategy has units that are all incredibly varied from one another. You also can't grind to get remove the strategy aspect from combat.

Well because people are expecting at least some degree of RPG customization.
With how limited you can do with a character in Tristrat, it becomes more of a puzzle

Even comparing it to pre-Awakening Fire Emblem which has lots of puzzle elements, there are lots of factors that can turn into a progression fantasy in the form of RNG growths, stat boosters and such

>Tactics Ogre and FFT are both guilty for encouraging being a faggot and drawing out fights to level up, foolish character building and grinding. They aren't strategy games

I mean you are referring to the fact that alot of powerlevelers flock into these games. There are many people who try to beat it without grinding as well, by choosing the right characters and classes to invest on.

Reborn also gives you level caps so it absolutely doesn't want you to over-grind in this regard
>>
>>743730773
>0 having the same smashed and slammed sprites as 1 was so disappointing
The more damning thing is that they had like 3 or 4 active poses for actions in battle; which is fair considering they had more than 36 characters to work with, but it's still drab to look at. Especially with the normal attacks: the final hit uses the exact same animation as the first/second/third hit.

1 lacks 2's QoL and it'll feel dated (which it is) and slow as molasses in comparison.
Many of the people who've played both, me included, agree that it's hard to go back to 1.
>>
I don't think it was a good game, it has a lot of shortcomings, and most importantly, it's really boring.
It also doesn't help that it's a grindfest since you have to keep up with leveling the 8 characters to do their MSQ shit.
I think I might be too employed to play this game, which knowing the average predditor, they have 98% probability of living off disability gibs.

Press X to Doubt without evidence.
Saga games don't have a deep TB combat as deep as Pokemon.
>Guess real life is absolutely unintuitive considering that's how everyone learns shit
There is a reason people avoid learning things out of frustration. Society eventually makes it better to learn things, unlike Saga which keeps their system stagnant even with numerous installments
>>
>>743740410
Because outside of the core system being quite literally ripped off SaGa 1 and 2's Monster race, Tajiri reportedly said Pokemon wouldn't exist if he didn't play those games.
>Saga games don't have a deep TB combat as deep as Pokemon.
How do you know since you clearly don't play them? Saying SaGa of all things keeps their systems stagnant and the propping up Pokemon which actually barely evolved in three decades is the telltale sign of poor trolling

Pokemon barely evolved? And you call me the trolling one?
Saga games did jack shit to its battle system. You really think just changing turn mechanics instead of adding more variations of interactions and effects in combat (which Pokemon did) would change anything?
>>
>>743740715
Also it's not SaGa that he was inspired with
Final Fantasy Legend is Saga predecessor but it doesn't have that "keep spamming x to learn y"
It has Fire Emblem style RNG growths

Please go on and explain in detail how SaGa 1's battle system is the same as SaGa Frontier 2's, Unlimited or Emerald Beyond.
>Final Fantasy Legend is Saga predecessor
Final Fantasy Legend is LITERALLY the first SaGa game, the series was rebranded for the west you absolute buffoon, thanks for confirming that the battle system actually did change by the way, unlike Pokemon which is still stuck in the same format as Pokemon Red/Blue

>>743723785
octopath traveler is one of the most average jrpg series out there, everything it does is just so middling, I wouldn't go so far as to call it AI generated but it just feels so uninspired. you can definitely see this with the music and art design
>>
>>743741063
And no, SaGa 1 doesn't have Fire Emblem RNG growth either, stats grow according to what commands you use, which again you'd know if you actually played the game since it's what FF2 already did before SaGa and SaGa's a direct offshoot of the first two FF games
>>
>>743741323
> thanks for confirming that the battle system actually did change by the way, unlike Pokemon which is still stuck in the same format as Pokemon Red/Blue
Didn't address my complete point. Changing your battle system into something that barely adds any depth means nothing and there is nothing "autistic" about it.

Why do you still insist on talking about games you've already proven to know nothing about?
GB SaGa's battle system is completely different from following games, and the series routinely adds, polishes and reinvents mechanics with each and every game, sparking wasn't even a thing until the fifth game in the series and it has literally received changes in each and every game since Romancing SaGa 2 to the point the current sparking system works in an almost completely different way.
>I said Final Fantasy Legend, not Saga, which clearly has that mechanic.
No it doesn't, stat growth isn't fucking random and it's determined by what action you take during fights, monsters don't even gain stats and their stats are static are entirely dependant on their monster form, humans gain stats through manual allocation etc.
Take your meds and stop shitposting, you've already been exposed as a total fraud who doesn't play games.
>>
>>743741813
OT1 is a beta
OT2 is the currently best iteration of "Octopath"
OT0 is effectively a repurposed version of the gacha and follows a more generic JRPG setup
Live A Live is a remake of the SNES game. It's short with schizophrenic genres (on purpose) before the final chapter and the battle system is an exercise in tedium which is thankfully why you can clear the game at an average of lvl7.
>>
>>743741580
Primrose alone is more interesting than all of OT2 characters

Each chapter before the final one has its own protagonist and the genre for the chapter varies:
Cube's story is more of a sci-fi horror, Sundown's is a wild west shootout, ninja can have a pacifist run or an all-murder run or anything in between, Oersted's is fairly generic fantasy all in iambic pentameter, caveman is pretty much standard JRPG, brawler guy is pseudo street fighter, etc.

>>743742390
All the chapters work on a unique structure and theme.
Cube's chapter is kind of a 2001 Space Odyssey inspired survival horror adventure with pretty much no fights, Akira's a more standard mini JRPG adventure with a mind reading gimmick, Pogo's gimmick is that it's a caveman story where nobody talks because speech wasn't a thing yet, Oboro's chapter is a nonlinear Jidai Geki scenario with focus on progression and choosing either a stealthy no kill approach or a full on slaughter of every NPC you can find and of course anything inbetween, Masaru's chapter is basically turn based Street Fighter 2 etc.
All chapters are parodies of pop culture media with specific gimmicks which converge in a somewhat overarching story which is about Oersted.

>"Not a SaGa game!11!!!" when the entire world including Tajiri says it is
Pokemon doesn't even have something as basic as positioning after 30 years, that's how simplistic and stagnant it is as a franchise, without SaGa it wouldn't exist at all because Tajiri literally stole the core mechanics directly from SaGa 1/2 and the series did not evolve one bit from Pokemon Red/Blue while SaGa's monsters actually work differently in every sub series they're featured in.
This is going nowhere because you have no idea of what you're talking about and you're a butthurt Poketard who's literally denying reality over and over on top of lying out of your ass to farm for outrage.
>>
>>743743397
That's just how Octopath is. 0 does away with that for a story "centered" on a mute MC where the side characters end up being the main characters for most of the story arcs and your MC's just "there" and tagging along for most of it instead.
>>
>>743743425
I already said I'm pivoting from that argument and conceded that you are right
>Didn't actually bother to talk about the turn based combat depth

>you're a butthurt Poketard who's literally denying reality over and over on top of lying out of your ass to farm for outrage.
You are the one who is farming outrage to begin with in the first place evident by this >>743739775
>>
>>743743565
That's not even me you're quoting there absolute retard.
And yes, that anon is right as well, OT is also directly inspired by SaGa which is also why the mobage has a SaGa collaboration campaign and the RS2 remake was explicitly changed to cater to Octopath fans by using the same combat model.
SaGa has way more depth than Pokemon will ever have, and it's pointless to talk about it with someone who not only didn't play the games but lies about them, I can make indepth mechanical analysis about both old and contempary entries for both series but it will all be lost on the likes of you.

Every post is a confession with you, uh?
By all means do attack me, you already lost your fight with reality multiple times, if you want to keep showing how much of a clown you are I welcome it.
After all you haven't made a single actual argument to show how Pokemon is so much deeper than a series you haven't even played.
>>
>>743723785
It's everything about JRPGs but processed and repackaged in a way that you don't have to think too hard about it. The game leads you by the hand down a laundry list of things to do and never fully gives you agency, despite the alleged appeal of the game being the fact that you have 8 heroes with different abilities and it should be up to you how to use them to proceed.

Basically it's a classic JRPG, right down to the perversion of the pixel aesthetic, that has been contorted and mutated into a modern movie-game, so redditors can play something one-handed while they doomscroll/updoot with the other, and feel like they are le retro ebin gamers just like they pretend to be online, even though FF6 was too hard for them to finish.
>>
>>743743485
>and your MC's just "there"
I mean you're playing as the ringbearer and the entire story is around getting magic rings. The MC is there for a purpose and actually interacts with the story and the characters even if it's done as a silent protagonist. And the CotC "side characters" (as if they aren't central to the crux of the story either) have more development and interactions than the characters in OT1 and OT2. OT0 is just what would have happened if OT1 and OT2 were allowed time to actually develop and weren't just rush out of the door by SE before they could even come up with a proper name (and their stupid naming hurt Adventure of Elliot, too, since half the conversation of that game is how dumb the name is I wish they'd properly name their games).
>>
>>743744368
I already told you / or that other sagafag that changing battle systems and not adding actually unique interactions/ effects isn't going to make your system deeper to what Pokemon already has.
And now if you are going to keep insulting me for past mistakes that I admitted without actually offering a rebuttal about my point, then so be it. I'm not the one who keeps trying to act like the bigger person here.
>>
>>743744030
Will never touch anything ruined by Working Designs. Actual fan fiction and the people that defend them or have nostalgia for their works are dumb.
>>
>>743744459
>Basically it's a classic JRPG that has been contorted and mutated into a modern movie-game
This. It's all the trappings of a JRPG without any of the actual effort required to explore or immerse yourself. It's a guided tour of a JRPG with way too much dialogue, and it feels incredibly insulting if you're not a retard.

Working Designs objectively improved Lunar. The original was bland as fuck and so painfully easy that there was basically nothing keeping you engaged except for the pretty moving colors on the screen. The WD localization made the dialogue funnier and more rewarding, and the combat harder and more engaging so that you don't fall into a coma while playing. Lunar was a turd of a game that WD at least mutated into an amusing turd.

But SaGa added plenty of unique interactions and effects throughout the series, which again, you'd know if you actually played them.
Mikiri are perhaps one of the most famous examples of those, especially since the mechanic itself was also used extensively in some iconic boss fights like Berva in SaGa Frontier.
Sparking had tons of reworks through the series' history with many interesting submechanics like RS3's Inner Eye Random Arrow being only learnable if a character is temporarily blinded, DSC being a secret tech that is only available if you learn and equip a series of wrestling techs that form the combination and various other mainstay like weapon specific techs, weapons that are basically Bloodborne's Trick Weapons and can be morphed into different weapon classes by using their built in techs and so on.
The channeling system that SF2 introduced is another example of unique interactions where you must have access to an element source to cast spells and the terrain you fight in influences that, as in if you fight in a snowy landscape you have innate access to water element due to all the snow.
RS2 predated Pokemon's idea of changing weather by having field attributes you can dinamically shift by using spells, with a much more indepth system as Pokemon has a rudimentary deterministic on and off system while SaGa's field attributes change according to an internal chart where each elemental move has a specific chance to influence the field.

SaGa is THE japanese series that has an overly autistic focus on unique effects and interactions, which is also why again, Tajiri was one of the people inspired by it, and why OT is pretty much that minus the autism so normalfags can enjoy a severely watered down version.
>>
Can't wait until all boomer uncs kick the bucket and we can finally like jrpgs besides xenogears and ff7.
>>
>>743745331
If you can keep going on (more interesting things about Saga) then go on.
I played (not finished) SaGa Frontier, the RS2 remake, but even just comparing it to the beginning parts of Pokemon games have already fascinated me compared to them.
>Sparking had tons of reworks through the series' history with many interesting submechanics like RS3's Inner Eye Random Arrow being only learnable if a character is temporarily blinded,
Well I'm talking about the combat effects here.
That one particular part of Sparking sounds cool I guess
>similar to Bloodborne's Trick Weapons
Well the closest thing in Pokemon to it is the Protean ability and Aegislash's Stance Change ability

As for mons:
Weather-specific move interaction like 100% accuracy thunder, Weather ball (changes element based on weather), Solarbeam (insta-charge on Sun), terrain-specific moves (Rising Voltage doubles power in Electric Terrain)
Pokemon has things like FEAR, toxic stalling, U-turn, entry hazards..
Buffs are a broken mainstay element in JRPGs but Pokemon gives you all kinds of things to counter those with Haze, Roar, Impostor Ditto which lets you immediately copy the opposing roided monster to revenge kill it..
Trick Room, reversing the whole turn order.
Gyro Ball, dealling more damage the slower your mon are.
Priority moves. This one is especially available since the first generation.
Baton Passing your buffs to other Pokemon.
Stored Power = deal more damage depending on your current amount of buffs. Also apply to defensive buffs.
Curse = sacrificing your half HP to inflict incurable poison to target. When used by Ghost types turn into a buffing move instead.
There is many more that I can't fit here.

Sure GameFreak turns a blind eye in terms of integrating them well to the main games but that's another topic since we are talking about the depth of the combat, not the campaign quality / level design..

FFIV through X + Tactics + Dimensions are the mandatory ones.
I, II, III and XII are a nice bonus.
X-2 if you really enjoyed ATB and tolerate cheesy.
XV if you want roadtrip and braindead fun/vibes.
XVI if you want something of a different genre and cool cinematics.
Dissidia 012 if you want cool fanservice
Skip Bravely Default, it's trash, Asano can't even make a better game than Final Fantasy II as showed in 4 Heroes of Light and the whole Bravely series.

I don't really understand why you think those things are somehow noteworthy when SaGa was already doing them before Pokemon was already a thing.
Turn stalling can be enabled in many old SaGa games in a variety of ways like Mist Veil locks in RS2 or Overdrive loops in Frontier, buffs include anything from raw stats to creating magic weapons if you have free equipment slots, creating a shadow clone that mirrors everything you do etc.
Turn manipulation has been a thing ever since the SNES games where command priority became a mainstay, so you have specific techs that either speed up or slow down your actions in the queue, SSG and EB are all about indepth turn manipulation as well.
There's multiple universal mechanics like Gyro Ball, martial arts being the most compelling case where different martial arts run off different stats depending on what they are, RS1/2/3 strikes mostly run off SPD while throws run off STR and get even stronger the heavier the target is although the check for the throw also gets harder to pass, Unlimited completely changes your martial art moveset depending on the manipulation of the weight of the user, resulting in three different styles that focus on different niches.
There's many techs with special effects, Still Blade for instance makes the character act last in a round but also increasingly buffs the damage output if the character gets damaged before pulling it off, there's techs that damage specific enemy races and in some games can even instantly kill them.
There's spells like Starlight in Minstrel Song that creates up to five stacks of a magic shield that can parry attacks for you, and a follow up spell called Sunbeam that fires off the star bits created by Starlight and gets stronger depending on the number of stacks, or Wraith Form in RS2 which saps your life points to turn you into a ghost and makes you unable to do anything but spellcasting in exchange for becoming immune to most attributes, I could go on and on
