Braid AE is proof this guy is a jabroni, because nobody has super secret nostalgia for such a mid game. Braid can't exist in a world where actual good indies come out.

Meanwhile if SMB1 got a rerelease on Steam, it'd brutally mog it.

I don't care about that game or his fans, but In japan he get's called a wannabe japaniphile. Even the "japanese inspired!" Chapter felt like cringey pandering in the gaming and art spheres I post in and follow. His biggest claim to "fame" is that sakurai likes him, but that man likes all sort of things and people. He's one of the few japanese devs to give proper credit and respect to itagaki despite him being considered a "anti japanese" dev which pariahs you there. In his case it was for backing and prefering the xbox and disliking sony before everyone did.

T.half nip, and don't care about undertale or most indie games really. I just know the braid one because he paid for jap translation as if somewhere there would care for it.
>>
Despite being one of the earliest indie darlings, I cannot think of a less influential game than Braid.

You retard. Braid was only famous because it was the premier Xbox Live Arcade game. It had nothing to do with the state of gaming in the slightest.
>>
>>743732174
It's genuinely insane how this nigga doesn't understand that no one cares about his games like that. I don't even think they're bad per se, but they're EXTREMELY niche and Braid only got famous for being a relatively straightforward platformer that Microsoft actively marketed as part of their indie initiative on the Xbox Live Arcade in 2009.

How pretentious do you have to be to not get the memo that late 2000s/early 2010s style indie game dev shit was not only out of fashion but actively being mocked and derided, especially since everyone else in his gay little clique quit the indie business after that time period as well? Braid was one of the first games in a long time that felt mature in an artistic way, rather than "mature" in a sophmoric way. A lot of this boiled down to aesthetics, of course, because the actual everything of Braid is incredibly childish.

Because once you've had other artsy indie games and the mystique has worn off, you realize Braid is going "What is Mario but DEEP?! Makes you think, right?"

The only thing it did is that it signaled to other people that there was an audience for artsy games and experimental games.
>>
>the AIgger is now trying to imitate actual nigger "arguments"
>>
>>743738163
Unironically yes. Jon Blow would've made more and been more at peace if he just quit indie game dev and went into the software world. Not only is there more job security and the problems that he solves are more in line with his skillset and interests (actual software engineering), but the fact that he and other indie devs from that era haven't made anything close to the same splash that they did in 2009 was a sign that the gaming market had changed and that the strategies they used just weren't going to work anymore.

Only a stubborn idiot like Jon or Blowjob givers like you think that making subpar indie games for the price of a AA game in the year of our lord 2026 is a reasonable investment.
>>
>>743738163
No one says "go be a plumber" dipshit.

Like >>743738363 said, there's more jobs than being a plumber or being an indie game dev full time. Jon could've had a cool career in software especially if he started in the 2010s. Now, he's kinda fucked since he wasted a solid decade chasing the dragon of an indie hit and spent $30 million on shit that should've cost $100,000 - 200,000 at most and should've been a passion project that took 1 year at the most rather than 10 years of his life.

The dude seems hellbent on becoming the indie darling he once was without realizing that it was mostly Microsoft doing the work and the world he was an indie darling in doesn't exist anymore and hasn't since at least 2016/2017. He's full on delusional and his retarded fans aren't helping matters.

braid ae was great, they really did polish the art and the music. the new puzzles range from fine to trash, it’s neat that they’re there but they all deserved to be cut from the proper game. the commentary tracks spoke directly to my autism, i’m crazy about that shit. they included beta iterations of in game puzzles that were cool to see.

The truth is that only reason Braid was originally a hit was because back then there was no real competition among indie games. They were a rising fad and he happened to be there at the right time with his 5/10 game.

Nta but Braid was great because it was made at the right moment, if it came out today people would completely ignore it at best or shit on it relentlessly at worst I still think it's one of the best 2d puzzle platformers released to this day
The Witness is one of the games I genuinely hated upon completion because of how bloated it is with absolutely dogshit mechanics that exist purely to annoy you and provide no meaningful challenge. 20% of the game, especially in the beginning, is a masterpiece, 80% is fucking mental retardation. I would have enjoyed it more if it did not overstay it's welcome.

Braid feels like someone who has a very vague secondary knowledge of video games trying to make one.
There is no particular reason that your platformer's enemies have to be a head with feet thing that is defeated by jumping on it once. Sonic isn't like that, Crash and Spyro aren't like that. It's a specific Mario thing. Braid doing it too gives the impression that Blow doesn't know shit about platformers and made one because it was the "default" genre of video game in his mind, because Mario is Mr. Video Game.

Correct, but I'm pretty sure it was intentional, so the game was simple and familiar enough to be approachable by a wide spectrum of people, and the actual challenge came not from platformer mechanics, but from time bending ruleset. Also remember, Braid came out in 2008, when games were still braindead easy and any notion of a challenge was met with incoherent screeching, at least until Demon's Souls came out.

If the rest of the industry is bad, then game dev is the 9th circle of hell. Where else do you see devs actively bloat the shit out of their product to the point that most of their userbase can't use it on the average mid-range hardware most consumers have and then not care about it in the slightest? Even webdevs still try to make their bloated as fuck websites useable to the average person visiting the site. Game devs just do not care at all if their UE5slop won't run on a mid-range card from within the last 5 years even though that used to be not only possible but the norm when you used Medium presets.
>>
>>743760045
Game dev is simply more intensive than the rest of the industry. Take your average company making some lame web or desktop GUI where the user clicks a button. In a game, you're simulating a world. Every single game is an immersive sci-fi simulation involving the amalgamation of multiple forms of media with potentially millions of variables. It's like comparing an AAA movie to taking a picture for display in a coffee shop.

>>743761772
Okay apples to apples then, game devs are worse programmers than scientific sim devs. You can talk about the scale being larger in ther former branch of programming jobs, but even correcting for that, game devs are still pretty shit programmers considering their simulations are comparatively slow and inefficient and bad at streaming media and audio-visual cues along with internal data of the simulation compared to people in the scientific side of the simulation world. Not to mention the optimization is wanting in many game engines that is a necessity in scientific simulation engines.

Gamedev is not more intensive than any other job at this point. Maybe in the 90s or 2000s and even the early 2010s you could say that, but now the worst of the worst of the post 2010s CS hype train are all in these game companies along with people that only got this job for a paycheck rather than as a means to hone their skills and produce something worthwhile. The result of that is all game dev tools being oriented towards the lowest common denominator and games being poorly made and implemented as a seconary result.

>30 millions dollars
Money well spent because a language like Jai is objectively what the games industry is going to need after the inevitable second game crash.

One of the objective reasons that game development now takes on average 8 years and therefore has 8x the cost plus 10x the inflation is because C++ is hostile to game development itself, C++ is a bloated mess and the "features" that take so long to come out are in the end a literal waste of time, and it doesn't actually help the process of game development, the committee is clueless to the hardware and performant code.
From this presentation from 2014 you can already tell that experienced developers are starting to have C++ bloat fatigue, it's been over 10 years since then.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX0ItVEVjHc

It was long overdue for modern general programming languages that actually helped you have control of the hardware and therefore excellent for game development, and not some other objective irrelevant to gamedev like managing some bullshit mental model that is going to have slow performance anyways or it's about "memory safety" or some other irrelevant goal that makes the language fucking rigid and virtually unusuable for gamedev.

A lot of programmers are knowledgeable of C++ or Rust or C#, etc, but it doesn't matter because they are bullshit languages and they are going to waste years of game development time wrangling some stupid faggot feature in those programming languages that is not actually relevant to the game, they are actually retarded and essentially a nodev, nil.

Here's what I mean, Rare was a company built on savvy programmers, but C++ is literally grounding them to dust, instead of making sure that Sea of Thieves was an actually good game, the newer versions of C++ were taking up all that headspace and they wasted years wrangling irrelevant minutia, after this they prob got fired after shit sales, the state of the industry:

All this is telling me is that gamedevs are incompetent bad at their jobs and that's something I and many people have already known for years. You're talking about the same Rare that took 10 years to get a game into alpha before Microsoft cancelled it. They don't have the programming prowess they used to.

>>743766441
The game runs like shit and it doesn't have the graphics or even the amount of in-game entities to justify it. No one cares about his shit language. No one will use Jai in a couple months let alone a couple decades because there's no push from some higher corporation or financial backer to push this language and the final product from the person making the language is kinda garbage.

If anything, I expect games to become less and less programming focused and use shit more adjacent to UE5's Blueprints or just scripting to get anything done. No one wants to learn yet another language to do the same shit they can do in another more established more mature language that has been worked on for years now.

>>
>>743767083
Good programming languages will gain traction for the sole(feet) reason that a good tool will let you do x100 more work, simple as.
That's what Rust was 10 years ago, to oversimplify it, people who were used to unique pointers felt that Rust provided that workflow and cleaned up all the complexity and bullshit that C++ had, then the corporations and industry took notice, because of grassroots traction btw, and then pushed the language on the entire industry, it stuck in web development and servers, but it didn't stick in gamedev because developers don't actually want that workflow, and the compile times are just as slow as a big C++ project, sometimes worse.

Developers want a simple language, that can provide proper control of the hardware and with incredibly fast compiles and no bullshit.
The programming language that provides that WILL gain traction and therefore end up being considered by the larger industry.

>If anything, I expect games to become less and less programming focused and use shit more adjacent to UE5's Blueprints or just scripting to get anything done.
E33 is an example for what you say here, but in my opinion this is just wishful thinking, UE5 is kind of a baggage on the entire games industry and it's better for good developers to just build their games "from scratch", using a good language for the task of course.
Keep in mind that even Epic Games is struggling with C++ on Unreal Engine, because the committee just does not care about the games industry, this surge of new languages like Jai, etc, was inevitable.

No, some games are just not feasible to make an engine for on your own unless you're a AAA studio and even then it's very hard and expensive (see CDPR with Cyberpunk). Better to do what Embark did with Arc Raiders: use UE5 but don't fire all your engine programmers so you can modify it to your needs.

Just look at how long it took Blow to make The Witness. Despite having decades of experience it took him and his team of very experienced people 7 years and cost him a lot, and graphically that game is very simple compared to something like E33.

A lot of argumentation online revolves around imagining a wageslave and then you have to do what the wageslave is doing or you're a loser, aka some form of FOMO but you miss out on waging, getting dat shit done n shit. (Note: You can't get shit done when a bad tool insists upon itself and gets in the way constantly)
My counterargument is this, good developers work on software because they have a passion for programming, when they get off work after having to deal with a complete bullshit C++ project that is an absolute mess, what kind of tool do you think they are going to consider for a hobby or a side project to have fun with programming again?

The industry, the games industry specially, rises from hobby or side projects blowing up, everything "mature" (old hag are NOT sexy) and "industry standard" is stagnant because the passion is gone, and bad tools ran its course.

Time control in Braid is really good and had good puzzles; but unfair if you want the hidden stars (wait fucking 2 HOURS in a cloud, glitches/speedrunning for the star of the frozen world, etc)

Those are the best 30 million dollars ever spent, because it produced a good language with fast compile times.
For Silicon Valley that's like spending 300 dollars to create 1 zogzillion dollars in future venture capital, speculation, etc.

Only the demo is out. IMO it's gonna flop but why do these numbers matter.

I forgot to mention. High-level languages will follow. JavaScript, Python. These are full of flaws. They won't do. Neither fully fulfills the role of a proper (actual) high-level proglang. Cosmoslang's Logic-Functional Temporal Whiles/If/For/Some-statements. Temporal whiles-that's a smooth abstraction for the developer. This is the future. One can imagine the future of Terra-like "bridge" languages to then bridge the gap for a full setup of Cosmos on the scripting side and Odin/Jai on the low-level.

This is true, but we need "enginedevs" for the health of the industry.

What Embark and E33 did was a good move for their circumstance, but in the example of E33, that game was funded by a group that ejected from the Ol' Ubisoft, and if you account that Ubisoft was capable of making their own engines and now their spiritual descendants cannot, it's a bit of a decline.
Following the same point Embark had a lot of people that used to work for DICE, the recent Battlefield was DICE's inhouse engine shining again, looked like a success but they still fired a lot of people, grim.
What makes me mad is how the industry is killing the engine programmer because "UE5 can do everything" when UE5 can't actually do everything, it's just another stupid trend that kills the health of the absolute state of the industry.

I'm not advocating for everyone to make their own general engine (Defold already exists), if you look at Valve they didn't "make an engine", they just made their game (Half-Life 2), and then they had an "engine" to build off of for later projects, Blow had the same opportunity with The Witness, that engine could have easily been repurposed for the Sokoban clone but he decided to mog C++, and now we have Jai.
My point is that if you're a new AA or AAA company you could consider something like Jai, Odin, etc, as the language for your engine that you're going to keep iterating on for each subsequent game, and if you do it like Valve, but it's written with a language that has objective benefits over something like C++, you're going to have a lot of value for your expanded gacha multiuniverse franchise available for Android, iOS, SteamOS and Winblows.

It was the most played puzzle game in its Next Fest. 15th place in total, being surpassed by like a dozen friendslop games. Valve emailed him and asked him to keep the demo up longer. And it's on Switch, too. This game is doing to sell like hotcakes.
