I just started playing Chrono Cross. Just beat the hydra monster and yet it feels like my party is not getting stronger.

I'm not supposed to grind, am I? My characters barely deal damage when I need them to.
>>
you got memed into playing a shit game
just learn from your mistake and move on
>>

Iirc you dont actually get much stronger if you grind.

Its most likely an equipment or skill issue.
>>
>>743740717
You literally just have to match the colors and hit the enemy's weak point when you have full field effect. If you're still struggling despite this, you're not going to like the fight against Miguel.
>>
>>743740717
You only level up by killing bosses. Regular battles are a waste of time to pad out the game.
>>
>>743740717

Play Xenogears instead.

So regular encounters are pretty much useless?
>>
>>743743139
you get a select amount of battles/stat-ups after each boss to earn stats. been almost 30 years so i don't remember the exact amount
>>
Chrono Cross is literally the only game where you're supposed to just bumrush to the bosses.
>>
>>743743139
Functionally, they are useless. You'll get a random small hp increase from random battles, but never something important like strength or magic.
>>
>>743740717
Chrono Cross is very easy, how bad you can be? Use phyiscal attack, upgrade equipment in smith and attack with the opposite element color to deal more damage: yellow and green, red and blue, black and white.
>>
>>743743618
You get money and materials for equipment, sometimes unique elements, so they are not actually useless.
>>
>>743743139
You get minor stat bonuses after like 7-10 regular battles after each boss.
>>
>>743743139
Your max stats are based on your star level and they are pre-set per character per level. Each time you beat boss and get a new star level you will randomly gain a few stats in each regular battle until you're at that level's stat cap. Regular battles are primarily for items, not for exp.
>>
You get a couple of HP increases and a big stat boost once per level by completing random battles. It's impossible to miss unless you run from every single battle.
>>
>>743740717
I'm shocked it hasn't crashed for you.
Radical Dreamers edition is an absolute dogwater port not even worth playing.
>>

No, grinding isn't as useful as other JRPGs, but there's still occasional reasons to do it. It's paced like Trigger in the sense that you'll be an appropriate power level if you just play through zones linearly since most of your power comes from boss kills, you'll usually max out the incremental gains between bosses in less than 10 normal battles.
>>
>>743743139
you need to do a combination of boss battles and regular enocunters. Theres basically a level gate that only goes up when you beat a boss, and then you do random encounters until the level gate. But its only like 10-ish battles at most so you can skip the rest of the encounters unless you're grinding your other party members
>>
>>743743139
You get money and craft material.
After that, kill boss.

Technically you can skip crafting every other boss maybe?

>Play an even worse game instead.
>>
Would I like this game if I didn't care too much for FF7? The random encounters were annoying but the rest of it was OK. I liked Chrono Trigger for its compactness.
>>
>>743746524
There aren't random encounters in CC(though there are some forced encounters.) It's not a terribly long game if you just play through it once but you're clearly expected to play through multiple times because certain decisions massively impact the game and you can't see everything or get every character in a single playthrough.
>>
>>743746524
It depends. Chrono Cross is an excellent game in a vacuum, but it does rape some of the story from Trigger and the huge roster treats most characters as inconsequential collectibles rather than actual characters. If neither of those bother you, CC is peak PS1 JRPG atmosphere, mechanically solid, and has an amazing OST.
>>
Don't fall for the tomboy meme, you get better characters if you ignore Kid.
>>
>>743740717
That Hydra can be kind of tough if you don't plan out accordingly. In the future, do this:

If you planned this out this boss should be over very quickly.
You probably won't be able to set up a field, but use TurnGreen on Serge, then when everyone has power, use Magnify with Serge and have your others cast Aerosaucers and Bushbasher.

There is some new equipment at the Termina forge now.
Go back and get 3 Iron Mails and 3 Iron Helmets made. needs fur and leather
Also, YOU CAN FINALLY BUY CAPSULES, CUREPLUS AND HEALALL FROM LISA
Something I was not aware of the first time playing and went balls deep through the fortress with only 2 recoverall
