There's still no equal to this day. And you'd think after 80 million copies sold, the market would be teeming with competitors.
>>
>>743743286
There is no equal but there is a superior: Gothic (remake).
>>
>>743743380
You mean the OG Gothic games. Not the soulless remake with the schizophrenic lockpicking game.
>>
>>743743380
Cope, gothic tranny
>>
>>743743443
The lockpicking is not schizophrenic. It's fairly consistent though it was pretty difficult, but I think they adjusted it in later patches, it felt much more reasonable.
It was also the opposite of soulless.
>>
>>743743286
Agreed, and it makes me sad
It's a perfect recipe and no one copies it
>>
>>743743719
Why would you make a system that in no shape or form functions as a real lock while on top being a linked puzzle? I can pick locks in real life; the lockpicking makes no sense. If a lock were "linked", no key would be able to open it, as the tumblers normally are manipulated through individual positioning; otherwise, the lock would be impossible to actually open. To make matters worse, there is no way around it. It's not fun; it's overly slow and tedious and the difficulty degrees are basically moot as they are ALL a puzzle.
Bad design. There's a reason Gothic 1 is a classic and they shouldn't have fucked with it.
>>
Normalnigger classic
>>
>>743743286
Every single video game made after skyrim is a copy of skyrim. The witcher, assasin's creed, harry potter, dragon age, GTA, dark souls, god of war, final fantasy...All I see when I play them is retextured skyrim.
>>
>>743743706
Be grateful Gothic never was popular in the US and on consoles, cause people would have seen the travesty that Elder Scrolls games are. They were mogged hard by Gothic decades ago. They got mogged hard by recent games such as Witcher and KCD.
The elder scrolls is a series running on fumes, and those fumes have been running out for a while.
Starfield was shit, and whatever new game Bethesda makes it will be another obsolete shit, because the industry is at least one decade beyond their shitty engine.
>>
>>743743842
It's a minigame just like countless other lockpicking mini games. It was too hard by default since there were too many interlinked plates, but they addressed that.

It's legitimately baffling that no one sees how loved the Eurasian setting in an age of civilization decline and myth is. Everything else in the genre it seems is all about unreal landscapes with no footing whatsoever in our world and everyone gets along and isn't racist and distrusting of strangers.
>>
>>743744157
Gothic and Risen lockpicking minigames were already perfect. The multi-plate system is so schizophrenically unrelated to real lockpicking that you might as well make people solve a bejeweled, tetris or pipe connect minigame.
>>

>>
>>743744486
I don't remember the Risen one but the Gothic one was lock + simple memorization. Passable.
This one requires some brain power.
I hate it with a passion at first and made a big thread about it on steam. However, after patches and investing in lock picking it became quite solid.
it's still not perfect (some locks are too hard relative to their loot, and the lock difficulty indicator feels way off sometimes) but it's solid overall.
Another example of changes for the better in the remake in addition to the much improved combat is the economy. It makes cheesing the game more difficult, in a way that feels fair.

It is weird how there’s no first person open world rpgs besides Skyrim. There’s tainted grail fall of Avalon but that’s it.
>>
>>743744551
Well I meant Eurasian as in that which is shared by both Europe and Asia. So no deserts or tropical forests. Basically just steppe, mountain ranges and arctic regions.

bro it was outdated the day it came out what are you talking about, janky ass game that germans praised as the second coming of christ cause it was the first game they actually understood (localizations were abysmal back in the day, this was their product)
the game is overrated and viewed through nostalgia goggles, be honest with yourself

But deserts can be good too, they just have to be well executed. Lots of real life examples to mine from, the carved facades of Petra and ancient Egyptian tombs buried by the sands over time. And Hammerfell has lots of mountain ranges so some tribute to Tibetan-style temples would be cool. I'm hopeful 6 will carry the torch ambience wise, albeit Souleless.

>>
>>743745242
The controls were messed up but they were much better than the original. Also, mentioning jank in the context of the elder scrolls games is 100% pure irony. The games have been jank since forever, except that games such as Gothic and Witcher 1 were considered "eurojank" while Bethesda got a pass despite being just as buggy, because it was "part of its charm".
>>
>>743744089
ooookay, relax Piotr

The sad truth is that suits can't figure out what makes it "special". They'll say it's because it has dragons or skill trees or a viking setting or whatever, when in actuality it's because it's an adventure simulator set in a somewhat believable world with rich lore where you create your own character to explore it.

TES games are good because they are the perfect blend of sandbox and handmade content.
They give a freedom close to games like M&B, Kenshi and Survival Crafting games, while also having an actual interesting world and interesting quests to engage in.

Almost all AAA open world games are too linear and guided when compared to Tes games.

The new 3D Zelda comes closer than any other, but they fail when it comes to making a "believable world". Hyrule is beautiful, has a great atmosphere, and it's full of things to explore, but it's also quite "gamey". They also fail in the quest department.
Though, I don't think Nintendo was even trying to make the same thing, so it's not a criticism of BotW, just a comparison.
>>
>>743748716
>Though, I don't think Nintendo was even trying to make the same thing, so it's not a criticism of BotW, just a comparison.
There were multiple mentions in the leadup and around release that they took inspiration and wanted to do something like Skyrim with BOTW, so I think it'd a fair comparison/criticism
>>
>>743748174
>Dogshite babies first RPG
Morrowboomers think that technology limitations making a game necessarily harder and padding playtime by forcing tasks that should be trivial to the game's core gameplay makes for the peak of RPGs. Skyrim freed the player from bullshit minutia to allow them to *play* the game, not *manage* it. And it's not realistic nor fun to be met with loredumping walls of text for every interaction no matter how irrelevant. Good games are kinetic, if you want to read pick up a book instead.

TES has incredible attention to detail but it neglects the big picture, which for moment to moment gameplay doesn't really matter. For the normalfag that pops in Skyrim for an hour or two or the roleplayer the intricate small scale picture is what matters, each session is a vignette.
This is what every one else lacks when trying to copy or compete, Bethesda are the masters of detail. The small scale suffers for other developers because they are too preoccupied with establishing a world and giving it grand stakes. The mass appeal of TES isn't the main quest or intricate worldbuilding, it's walking from Whiterun to Winterhold or getting sidetracked on your way to a quest because you were chasing an elk only to find a dungeon with a mini-storyline within it.

>having an actual interesting world and interesting quests to engage in.
They have the most bland and soulless locations I've ever seen in gaming. Everything feels copy-pasted. I remember walking into dungeon #477 in Oblivion and finding random bandits with god tier armors. it felt so stupid and out of place. The entire world feels bland and artificial, you can almost see all the duct tape and puppet strings that hold it together.
>>
>>743752498
> Stop looking at Gothic through your nostalgia goggles.
I'm not.
The open world felt much more intricate and hand crafted. it felt like a real world where you were dropped in. The worlds in elder scrolls always felt copy-pasted.
The feeling of progression in Gothic is unmatched by anything in Elder Scrolls.
The world reactivity was on another level with people having proper day night cycles, reacting to your actions, enemy creatures attacking each other and so on.
>Anon...even UE5 struggles struggles
Gothic remake is using UE5 and it did just that: a seamless open world, just like the original did decades ago.
>>
>>743752316
This is the thing that completely carries the game. Gameplay and roleplaying options are fucking trash, and yet I still love the game for its atmosphere. Skyrim as a place is incredibly appealing even if the game itself sucks ass. It's the only game I've gone exploring just because I wanted to see what's out there, instead exploration just being a means to get loot and upgrade materials.
>>
>>743743286
The game is also really light with the lore and the places feel generic enough that you feel satisfied when exploring, but you aren't overwhelmed by it being too fantastical.
Also makes it a perfect game for modding
>>
>>743746847
You normalfags are the reason games fucking suck now. Skyrim has exactly two good parts, the music and the setting itself.
