which game did open world better?
>>
OP here I meant to compare BOTW vs elden ring, not TOTK.
>>
OP here its a rhetorical question, no one played the toddler shit on the left
>>
Haven't played the open world Zeldas, but I can already say they are better. ER's open world is literally just jarring time wasting while I imagine it's somewhat fun to explore and find loot, dungeons, puzzles, etc in Zelda.
>>
>>743793191
the new zeldas. ER's open world is kind of bland honestly. both have lots of empty space but Zelda at least tries to play with the systems and sandbox it created, ER is just a souls game set to really wide. Souls is best with tight intentional design, kind of like classicvania.
>>
ER has actual dungeons to find, for starters

99% of open world games
>hold W for 60 seconds until you are at your next point of interest. once you get there, enjoy your shitty copy pasted dungeon
nuzelda
>here is an obstacle. how will you quickly and efficiently reach where you want to go? you have at least a dozen options. once you get there, enjoy your shitty copy pasted dungeon

this one secret sauce makes nuzelda top tier... for an open world game
>>
>>743793191
I genuinely hate BOTW but in this case BOTW. Elden Ring's open world is legit one of the worst in the industry. It's awfully designed. Even shit like CV2 and Nioh 3 have better open worlds.
>>
>>743793191
neither, both are shit in term of open world and both games despite being "open world" are empty as fuck
>>
>>743794129
*open world is shit

Fixed. >>743794080
>>
>>743793191
You don't even interact with ER's open world.
>>
>elden ring is ... le empty
did you guys even play the game?
>>
>>743793191
Oblivion
>>
>>743793191
Neither because they both failed catastrophically. In BotW 99% of the world is meaningless because of the weapon durability system. In Elden Ring 99% of the world is meaningless because of the limited respecs which are not only resource gated but progress and exploration gated.

Way to prove the point you're trying to argue against.
>>
>>743794365
ER is good on a first blind run because you have a reason to visit all those locations, replays it's a different story because if you have decent memory you can skip most things because you don't need it for your build. I'm very likely to use a randomizer on my next run to avoid this exact problem so I have a reason to scour the map again
>>
>>743794080
I agree
And then TotK ruined that in a sequel
>>
>>743794129
Name 3 good open world games then
>>
>>743794494
>it doesnt count as content if you have to walk through a door first
ok
>>
>>743793191
Zelda.
ER is a better game overall. It's just that the open world sucks ass and actively makes the game worse.
>>
>>743794458
And you actually get something for traversing the world. It's objectively better than both.
>>
>>743794558
Yes actually dumbass. The entire polnt of an open world game is that you can SEE everything around you and explore based on distant visuals. If everything is in a random fuck ass cave on the side of cliffs that you can't spot unless you run around hugging a wall that is not open world exploration. When I think of the open world I think of it having NOTHING in it because it does have nothing in it.
>>
Limgrave and Lakes are good. Then it becomes boring.
>>
I'm playing ER for the first time right now and it's definitely not empty, every area is dense as hell with shit to find. If anything I think it would be better with LESS in the world, keep all the best stuff but give me less caves/mines/catacombs so the stuff you do find is more meaningful.
>>
ER's open world is legitimately just straight up bad cuase it's very clear Fromsoft genuinely have no idea how to design an open world game. ER is just a Dark Souls game stretched out to have space in between everything.
>>
>>743794620
>The entire point of an open world game is that you can SEE everything around you and explore based on distant visuals
I can't the if some oddly specific fixation of a ultra autist or just a run of the mil retard being dishonest to "win" and internet argument

Yeah I never got how they can call ER empty either it's just objectively false
>>

It's not about the game. It's about the world. Genshin Impact objectively handles its open world significantly better than BotW or ER. There's no contest.

comparing brap of the mild to elden ring is hilarious. ER is the best, and only good, open world game.
>>
>>743794756
>>743794809
You can cope all you want but basically everyone agrees Elden Ring's open world feels empty. It's not me that excludes the dungeons from the open world. Fromsoft did that. There's zero thought and care put into blending them with the world. You could have selected them from a menu like Demon's Souls and the game would be unchanged because that's all Elden Ring is. A bunch of self contained closed off areas with empty space between them.
>>
>>743794917
>basically everyone agrees Elden Ring's open world feels empty
are these people in the room with us right now?

Game is still gacha and therefor not worth talking about
>>
>>743794818
You can count the single-player version of genshit with leaked server files, and it will still be superior despite being a few years out of date.
>>
>>743794869
You're right but retarded ERfags and BOTWfags aren't ready for that cold hard truth.
>>
>>743794917
>everyone agrees Elden Ring's open world feels empty.
I've literally never seen anyone outside of /v/ claim that, here it's parroted by contrarians and retards and was presumably started by those discord trannies that wanted the game to bomb, it's just so blatantly false no one could genuinely believe that after having played it other than complete idiots like you that value what they read in a shitpost over reality
Still waiting to hear about your favorite open world games ;)
>>
>>743794080
totK actually made a valiant effort in not copy pasting the dungeons, as each is fundamentally designed differently, the wind temple is the most like the divine beasts, a large open space with non-linear progression, the pyramid is a classic linear dungeon of subsequent rooms like those in the first few Zelda games, the volcano ruins test your ability to move vertically between rooms and the water dungeon is divided between the lakebed waterworks where you restart the water flow and the floating island where you clean up the mud.

>>
>>743795035
>it's so blatantly false
And yet you can't argue against it.
>Still waiting to hear about your favorite open world games ;)
Open World games suck so I don't have a favourite. ER is just the worst among a dog shit genre. But if you want an open world game that actually knows how to be an open world game, unlike Elden Ring then Crimson Desert. Can't wait for you to instantly dismiss it as shit for being gookslop or whatever dumb meaningless buzzword you plan on using. You're a dishonest kike so I know you never actually cared about what open world game I could have said and just want to use it as a tool.
>>
BOTW. I don't think it's close. People like ER because it's the roll r1 game, and they confuse one thing for another. ER doesn't reach botw's ankles when it comes to world interaction. Both are big worlds, but that doesn't matter. What do you do when you come up to a cliff in both games? In one of them you can traverse past it in a number of ways. In the other, you follow a set walking path laid out for you or you die to fall damage.
>>
>>743795121
>asset flip
>ER wins
90% of ER is reused assets. This criticism would fly with nearly any other game being compared but ER is just as guilty.
>>
>>743795136
>I know you never actually cared about what open world game I could have said and just want to use it as a tool.
Has there ever been an example of someone asking for you to name a game as an example where it wasn't instantly apparent they were being dishonest and planning on dismissing it no matter what you say? Nobody says that shit genuinely.
>>
>>743795136
There is nothing to argue it's like claiming the sun it's green or 2+2=9, the open world if objectively full of stuff there is no debate to be had
There are plenty of actual critisim of it one can have but saying it's empty is just false
>Open World games suck so I don't have a favourite

You will have stretches of land with nothing except the ground texture and stamina bar keeping you entertained. You see a rock circle Korok "puzzle" a hundred meters to the left, but knowing the solution and reward without having to interact with it, you decide that it isn't worth your time. You enter your fortieth Shrine and are faced with a puzzle that's just as easy as the previous 39 because some players might enter that Shrine first. You do it without putting much thought into it and get the same reward as all the other times.

After exiting the disappointing Shrine, you encounter a camp with one of three possible types of humanoid enemies. You consider fighting them but sensing that the reward is five fire arrows or something equally boring, you run through it with no repercussions, not wasting your weapon durability. Finally arriving at your location, the cool thing you saw in the distance 20 minutes ago, you find one of three things. A chest with something insubstantial, another korok "puzzle" or just nothing at all. The journey wasn't fun, and the destination wasn't either.

That's BotW. That's what you will praise.

To find out which game did open world better, find out which game is still being talked about today.

ToTK got mogged in the year it released, by a shitty furfag RPG. Despite /v/ and /vg/ being a Nintendie board, even the general of Zelda got killed by the NuZeldas. That's how damaging they were to the franchise on here alone, so damaging the only Zelda threads you now see are

>ToTK being compared to better games to bait engagement in the OP, case and point this thread. Latching off Elden Rings relevant coattails
>"Favorite Zelda girl"
>OoT remake hype because /v/ is clammoring for Nintendo to drop this entire open world cringe

But hey, that's just me proving that /v/ clearly prefers Elden Ring to any of the Nu Zeldas.

If you want actual tangible figures which I know NuZeldafags love talking about sales and "gotys" when it suits them so let's talk about them

Elden Ring has more sales than ToTK
Elden Ring has more GoTYs than ToTK

No matter the metric you wanna use, be it relevance on 4chan (this very website) or commercial/critical success, Elden Ring > ToTK.

>>743796981

Design decisions in Fontaine and Natlan are very likely direct responses to internal data regarding the way players interacted with Sumeru. They didn't need to swing the pendulum so hard the other way but that's just how executives do things.

Wuwa is kinda weird cause despite having air grapple like monster hunter rise and wallrun with double jump they give you elytra after a ceirtain moment. It also got a bike with glider and accurate slope physics+sonic boost. There's a lot of shmovement you can do in wuwa, but there's somewhat less stuff to find at least compared to first 3 regions of genshin. Basically BOTW forced slow climbing vs TOTK launch a rocket difference. Although world/lore design is still peak, it's just somewhat less of the main attraction. It's also objectively the single most beautiful game in existence, so here is that.
>>
>>743798120
>never see anyone talk about WuWa's world.
Because it's the worst part of the game. They don't have the design chops nor the aesthetic mastery so you're rushed through exploration as quickly as possible with all the excessive movement options the game gives you. Kuro is fully aware that they couldn't make anywhere near as good of an open world so they give you the tools to speed through and they hope you'll be too distracted by the zooming to really pay attention to that bland world you're zooming through.
>>
>>743799110
the world is fine it's just kuro's obsession with player feedback and accessability that causes this. Because most gacha players can not in fact appreciate world exploration at all

Now that's brutal honesty. I cant believe there's people that want Zelda to go back to linear railroaded setpieces neither. It defeats the purpose of an open world adventure game. You SHOULD be able to skip stuff, cheese stuff, or choose to do stuff. That will cause a game to stand the test of time far better than closed off areas with lots of empty space.
>>
Anyone saying Zelda hasnt played Elden Ring. Zeldas open world 99% of the time just lead to dogshit shrines and koroks. Elden Ring also actually has legacy dungeons something Zelda decided to leave behind

BotW is the best open world game. It would be even better if you couldn't recover stamina from the pause menu, and also if you could only change your clothes at an inn.

ER and it's not even a contest. Even ER's mini dungeons are better than the stupid shrines. Also it doesn't reward you with shit that breaks in 5 hits maximum.

i played botw and elden ring. botw is 100 percent the better game. elden ring is very bland, underpopilated, uninspiring dungeons and areas are all the same just the color of grass changes. i'd even say combat was more enjoyable on botw. elden ring is still a roll + right bumper simulator the way all dark souls were, just that the RB/R1 was replaced by some special attack on the LT/L1 for most people. it's still bland.

BotW pioneered the climb anything and parasail anywhere pattern which is huge. Elden Ring does have more dungeons but the "dungeons" (leading up to the 4 bosses which shoot the laser at the barrier) in Zelda are more memorable with interesting mechanics, including the actual open world dungeon, the castle. Elden Ring dungeons are just not very unique or large in scale in comparison.
>>
>>743793191
ER would be genuinely improved by cutting almost all the open world slop content and going back to the DaS1 style to connect up the legacy dungeons with no checkpoint fast travel.
BotW has two high points in the form of the plateau and hyrule castle, and then some bonus content with the divine beasts. There's just no meat left on BotW after cutting the filler.

Both are mediocre games and horrible compared to the standards of their series, but BOTW is a better open world because you actually interact with the world. ER is just a pretty backdrop for you to kill enemies that were copy-pasted from Demon's Souls (2009).
>>
>>743820119

Having 30 ways to bully bokoblins is not meaningful interaction with the world.

subjective opinion which is garbage. factually untrue to claim skyrim has worse open world than botw or er
ER is lazy copy pasted assets everywhere, recycled bosses . so even when the open world is dog shit, the actual content they have is recycled AI reskinned dogshit as well
BOTW is literal filler slop collecting turds, weapons that fall apart and itemization thats dog shit, so its core design is trash and its filler made for adhd low iq plebs who claim put the square in the square hole is actual content and puzzles to complete

Elden ring is the only game in this thread with actually good combat so it wins by default. Who cares about an interactive open world if the core gameplay is shit. BOTW had good combat in theory but ruined it by being piss easy, having 3 enemy types and an awful weapon system
>>
>>743823394
>watch 30 seconds of boss combos

elden ring is a strict downgrade from DS combat, it's better than BotW, but that doesn't mean it's good
>>
>>743824229
DS1 combat is for baby retards, and you only have to wait to attack in elden ring if you're retarded or doing a no-hit run or something.
>>
>>743824385
DS1 and 2 combat is the sweet spot, DS3 is where the devs fell for "le hardcore game" meme, ER is just a continuation of the same brainrot
>>
>>743823394
Souls combat is ridiculously overrated. And you need yo ask yourself what the function of combat is in a game like this anyway. Is combat the primary focus of the game? Is combat simply a way to deal with enemies that only exist as part of the setting? I don't particularly care for combat in general but it is important to exist. For me, a game that focuses on the combat detracts from the other aspects of the open world appeal such as exploration.

Besides, BOTW/TOTK has many non-combat ways to deal with enemies that make "combat" better than ER anyway.

All the people seething and saying Elden Ring is bad for whatever reason.
Meanwhile, I haven't had this much fun with an open world game since Skyrim.

I personally didn't really like Breath of the Wild that much, but everyone has different tastes. You can have a preference without needing to shit on a different game. But it seems not everyone got the memo.
>>
Elden Ring at least manages to overshadow the shit that is Zelda. Open world games are extremely hard to do, which is why most of them end up being badly design messes. Open world is like player agency, where intentional and good design have to be thought through before implementation is exercised. While not every trip or walk should be considered a life or death scenario, the fact that each of these games don't take into account player resources, and planning behind every journey is what makes them too easy and thus boring. This also goes into encounter design and much more, which I'm not going to bother explaining in this shit thread.

Both are dogshit for completionist hoarder normalfags

The only good open world games are
>GTA San Andreas
For its sandbox and main story
>Bully
For its immersion into the setting
>New Vegas
For its open roleplaying
>Morrowind
For its free exploration of a rich world and lore

Everything else is either downstream of one of these and thus inferior, or worse, a themed IP copy of Assassin's Creed like Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring which are only open world because it's a trendy way of dumping content on players, not because they had a gameplay reason to be open world
>>

I loved Elden Ring, every second of it. But it being Open World wasn't actually utilized at all and the game wouldn't change at all if it wasn't open world. The vistas were beautiful, fantastic art direction, riding torrent is fun as hell, and I genuinely liked exploring the world in every little nook and cranny; I 100% every item and quest and ending (through save stating before final boss) on a blind first playthrough, took like 150 hours. However the game did not need to be open world, a lot of the areas were just empty with nothing to do basically like 100 Darkroot Basins all over the game. The best parts of Elden Ring are the areas that feel like classic Souls levels (Stormveil Castle for instance).

The Zelda games are actually built around the game being open world. The gameplay conforms to it and utilizes it well.

I liked Elden Ring more, but Zelda is a better open world game.

>Best memories of Nu-Zelda are just me walking between villages and listening to loreslop videos, or LARPing as OOT Link.
>Best memories of Genshin are swimming around Fontaine and smacking mobs with my sub-optimal 4* waifus
>Best memories of Elden Ring are when I just walked around Liurnia and the Mountaintops of The Giants and took in THE VIBES despite there being actual dungeons to explore
I made a whole evening of just slow-walking to Raya Lucaria as an Astrologer the other night. I didn't need to do it, but it was fun. I also used to just hang out in the Stock Pot Inn kitchen in Majora's Mask because it was cozy, so I guess I've always been a massive vibefag.

Nu-Zeld has physics but Elden Ring and Genshin have better visuals and atmosphere. I'll also take catacombs and caves over korok puzzles any day.

Genshin has Barbara so it automatically wins.

Elden Ring. Zelda's open world would be better if it actually felt rewarding to explore places. At least in ER you get some equipment that may more may not be useful for a build you're going for. I say this, but I also don't think Elden Ring's open world is the greatest either.
My personal preference for exploration in an Open World game is Xenoblade X. Nothing beats the moment of going from walking around on foot for hours, to being in a mech, and then eventually flying all over with those mechs. Gives everything a real sense of scale that I feel most open world games, like Zelda and Elden Ring, fail to actually do.

Pretty much what I think and imo one option to remedy that would be to allow you to change your stats for free or for a few runes as much as you want it would definitely make me try all kinds of weird things during a single run instead of depending of that one item that as far as I'm aware is pretty limited

>>743830682
That's not how it works, compare it to reading a book
>book is only text descriptions of characters
>you're forced to use your imagination to imagine them
vs
>book has photos of actors that the characters would look like
>they supplant your imagination as the definitive image of the characters robbing you of the opportunity to imagine your own versions
>very hard to ignore the images in the book and just knowing they're there diminishes the experience
>>
>>743793191
ToTK obviously, since you actually get rewarded by doing the open world while also being able to just beat the game immediately just for a slightly increased challenge.
Meanwhile in base ER you travel 1000m and parkour for an ateria leaf. They improved it in the DLC but the open world felt more like DS1 style rather than actually using the open world for anything meaningful.
Fromsoftware does not seem to actually understand open world, but after ds3 anything was better even is base ER was basically empty.
