warhammer 40k i really cool on a macro level. but when you start looking closer at shit like this, especially the modern stuff, it becomes really cringe.

>>
>>743798190
marines are cool, but the people who like them are cringe.

you're meant to see them, and KNOW they're silly, which is what makes them cool.
the people who like them just see 'wow cool robotman' and fail to see they're meant to be a satirical mirror of baddassery.

thats why /tg/ has both the memes of the angry marines, and the sensible marines, the angry marines were what makes space marines fun turned up to 11, sensible marines were what makes makes marines fun turned down to 0

both are fun, but for different reasons.

also, you're cringe for posting this thread AGAIN
>>
>>743798190
They're reasonably cool, but their designs all too often end up looking incredibly stunted and goofy. Most of the resentment towards them (including mine) however is just from there being way too many of them.

Oh, you're one of those faggots who doesn't even know what satire is and that WH40K is not satire. No, a few references and parody characters doesn't suddenly make it satire.

Ultrasmurfs are kinda lame but the other chapters are cool.
For me as a DoWbabby, the de-facto chapter for me will always be the Blood Ravens. It just feels weird to see the "default" marine colour be anything but red.

>dude you can only appreiate things through an ironic/satirical veneer - sincerity is cringe
I'm so fucking tired of this sentiment that's plagued the internet for the past decade or so. It started in the 2010's around the MLG-montage era, but it's gotten really bad in the 20's.
There's nothing wrong with thinking "wow cool robotman" and never going further than that.
The problems only start when people take them too seriously - because then you get shit like the retards who use their iconography to larp about real world political issues (who are the other side of the same coin as "disney adults" and the like).

no you irony poisoned retards, back in 3rd ed when i started playing 40k at a teen i thought marines were the coolest thing ever, and i was right.
because they ARE the coolest thing ever as a 12 year old.
but the empire is literally a satire on space shlock.
their god is a corpse who eats a million people a day.
their cities are giant ant hills full of criminals, which is why the space marines turn up as turbo cops and blow them up like dredd.
then an alien turns up! AND THEY SHOOT THEM TOO, and now theres green aliens that like to fight, and the marines like to fight, so they fight eachother.

shit was cool because it was UNIRONICALLY goofy.

the issue is more recently they tried to make them a serious group of badasses, they stopped painting their guns (that launch rockets that have been blessed by a robotic priest) red and renamed them from space sharks to 'carcerands' and tried to tell us their plight of genetic villainy is tragic and oh but for the grace of the emperor goes i.
but they were cool as angry bitey space monsters working for the good guys while painted like a german ww2 plane.
oooh, woe is us, the evil marines (you know they're evil because they have SPIKES) actually were betrayed, and the dead guy was a bad dad.

get fucking real retard, 40k was meant to be a joke about space fantasy, and it went over too many peoples heads, and then those retards (fuck you matt ward) got a hold of the IP and tried to explain their 12 year old 'wow cool roboute' mindset as highbrow art instead of literal kids cartoon bright color to push magazies and miniatures.

They carry the entire setting hard. Most factions define their strength and purpose by their history with Marines and how effective they are at fighting them.

People who shit on Space Marines are just kind of dimwitted, you know what it's like...It's like those Star Wars fans saying that star wars needs to focus less on the skywalkers and lightsabres and the force. That's what it's like.

>>
Space Marines lost their way. They were initially blood-crazed murder cyborgs. The only loyalists that really still fit this today are the Iron Hands. We need to go back to bulging blood-shot eyes, one arm blasted off with viscera dangling from the shoulder socket; the other still clinging to the boltgun and letting loose an un-ending torrent of hot metal death. Screeching incoherently about death and the extermination of the unclean; with the occassional out-of-tone yet still poetic snippet of a half-remembered hymn to the God-Emperor interrupting the harsh guttural barks of hatred.

These warriors are not heroes, and they are not just line soldiers; they are hulking monsters in the vague figure of a man that are sent in as shock-troops to break positions and sow death and discord where once stood a pristine bulwark. They are not graceful and their methods are not clean; they are brutality incarnate, harsh jagged angles to their armour accentuating this thematic truth. These are not knights in shining armour, they are not jovial vikings, and they are certainly not concerned with collateral damage or the lives of civilians; they are blunt instruments of ruin that pummel and smash and take a beating in return, and which just refuse to die out of sheer spite.

They are the worst and most monstrous aspects of us all; and what for so many in the modern day is a source of fear, becomes the greatest sanctuary of us all in the far future. Mankind's most terrible features manifest to become our shield against a universe of ravening aliens and thirsting devils; we meet their abominable and monstrous ways with our own, and we tell those misbegotten creatures that hoewever horrorific and vicious they might be; we are worse. We show the terrors of the night that it is they who should fear us. Forever more it will be the face of man that is nightmare fuel to all other creatures that dare exist on our plane of reality; and they shan't exist here long, for we are coming for them.
>>
>>743801009
That's fucking retarded considering that a lot of them, mostly first founding chapters, trace back to the existence of the emperor and know that he's not a god, just a really really mighty man.

Started cool and got more and more cringe with each new edition
Multiplied by the chapter you're talking about too
So we've gone from cool to moderate
Further multiplied by certain factors such as Ultramarines which is a negative multiplier making them mediocre
Also some have lore which is now shit on by Primaris such as the Lamenters and Blood Ravens so they've gone from okay to thoroughly mediocre too
On average though, yeah space marines are meh at worst, moderate at best

>>
>>743801153
This is my point. They lost their way and so have you. 40k was best when it was a terrifying and nasty place; and rather than humanity to succumbing to the horrors and monsters that lurked behind every corner, humanity one-upped them and embraced everything that our modern sensibilities tell us that we should reject, and went forth as force more destructive, more hateful and ultimately more monstrous than the aliens and demons that were so foolish as to make us their enemy.

Instead you're all 'waaah my space knights don't believe in religion' and its just bloody exhausting and embarrassing. The very heart of 40k has been wrenched out and replaced with this high-fantasy-esque tripe.

>>
>>743803307
That's just as retarded a take as the other guys and was why 5th edition went nearly full grim derp to the point of actual parody. The setting can have both honorable space knight Space Marine Chapters as well as the grim derp murderhobos in space that are ultra racist atheists, and also a reason why these 2 groups would have serious beef with each other for wildly different interpretations of their duty to the Emperor, the Imperium, and humanity at large. Not everything has to be so black and white, anon. Sometimes it's necessary to have a knight in shining armor fighting back against the encroaching darkness. Otherwise it's just a bunch of retards backstabbing each other forever with no reason to care about any of it.
>>
>>743798190
Pre Primaris cool, post Primaris cringe. Gullyman should have stayed dead.
>>
>>743803453
My nigger this is what THE preface for the setting: It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods and master of a million worlds by the might of His inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the vast Imperium of Man for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day so that He may never truly die.

Yet even in His deathless state, the Emperor continues His eternal vigilance. Mighty battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the Warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit by the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst His soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Imperial Guard and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the Tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat to humanity from aliens, heretics, mutants -- and far, far worse.

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

Guilliman was never dead though, and even old lore would say shit like it'd look like the stabbing wound he got was shrinking.

>>
>>743803556
I actually agree, there is space for nuance and compelling sympathetic characters; but 40k is best when they are there only to help us interact with the setting by giving us a familiar mind to witness the events through. The setting loses its identity when you have factions like the Ultramarines and Salamanders who are simplistic heroic good guys. It is handled better with the Dark Angels or Black Templars who in many cases are the good guys that we sympathise with, but there is a harshness and cruelty to them that makes them fit in better.

The Iron Hands, rather than being the mocked aberration, should be the norm for the Astartes. Reckless murder-cyborg shock troops that are nigh-unkillable and care nothing for collateral damage so long as they utterly annihilate the hated foe.

The fuck are you on about Custodes and Thunder Warriors were always stronger than Space Marines.
Custodes because they're the guardians of the Emperor himself and handcrafted gene made rather than a Space Marine who is mass produced, splice and cut.

Thunder Warriors on a 1v1 were stronger than a Space Marine but their genetics are not as stable, they are not as coordinated, as disciplined as able to work as well in a unit as a Space Marine is. Space Marines are also able to live for hundreds if not thousands of years, Thunder Warriors are not. By the time of their mass culling the remaining Thunder Warriors were already deep in psychosis.

You almost got there, but the Ultramarines or Salamanders or even the Crimson Fists to a lesser extent don't lessen the setting for existing by being more earnest examples of heroism. They improve it by being the incredibly necessary contrast to make people even WANT to care about the setting. It's damned difficult to make people care if everything is just "the bad guys win, and the good guys are just slightly less bad guys because they don't sacrifice babies to evil gods" You're going full grim derp by not realizing this basic truth of story telling. At that point you're just doing a TLOU2 depression porn and frankly that shit is mentally exhausting even in small doses. I'll take my demon hunting super humans fighting a desperate and possibly phyrric battle against otherworldly monsters in the dark over that depressing crap any day.

hovertanks aren't new inventions though.
The pedantic dogma of the mechanicus states that the omnissiah has invented everything that could ever be invented, so "inventing" something new is heretical behavior. In spite this you are allowed to improve upon an existing invention.
The perfect example of this is everyone's favorite clanker ostrich, the ironstriders. These were made by taking the seekers of the sydonian mask and strapping on an engine powered by its own movement.
Hovertanks fall into that same shit where it's just tank bodies strapped on to hover tech that they apparently had back in m30.

I agree with you actually but Salamanders are poorly written and detract from the universe, and often but not always, so are the smurfs.

Yes we want heroic characters, but people should know the basics of military. If you wanted to save women and children, would you send your long range artillery in to save them?

... That's a slight exaggeration on what sending Space Marines in to save women and children is. The Space Marines are shock-troops. They are used to achieve specific and difficult objectives. They are designed for surgical strikes. This is specifically the case in 40k when the legions and broken up and roles clearly defined.

It makes sense for Guard to want to save women and children by actively protecting them. The Space Marines save women and children by assassinating warlords, blowing up heavily defended weapon depots, crippling enemy fleets through boarding actions to stop reinforcements coming to a world; that sort of thing.

Having Salamanders go out of their way to save a random human and forsaking their primary objective is just poor writing. I do agree that there is a need for heroism, though I think a lot of heroism can be found in simply fighting for the sake of your people; but I am happy for more chivalrous archetypes to be in the setting. Salamanders specifically are just crap though and I will maintain my hateboner for them. Those that act like them will where necessary come under fire too.

Not really. AoS's best ideas are worse implementations of shit it stole from warhammer fantasy and the stuff unique to AoS is just bad. I'd contend that the whole thing of everything being split into planes was good because it helps the setting. GW's incessant need to
>have a narrative
and
>have the narrative be affected by the ongoings of the tabletop, unless it's an absolute curb stomp that would kill their grimderp like when the Eldar pretty much won the Eye of Terror campaign and therefore should have had a happy ending
Would mean that even though the planet that WHFB has been at war with each other for decades in real time, it'd just be nonsensical to the narrative to have anything that isn't skaven still alive. With all the fighting everything should have fallen to the undead or demons, with skaven being the only living thing by way of the fact that they reproduce, well, like rats.

When it comes to xenos and traitors, yes they are

All space marines are mentally programmed to hate anything that isn't a loyalist human, xenos can be tolerated up to a point if its mutualy beneficial but after that's done a chainsword is going up the eldar the xeno's asshole

Thunder warriors were murder bros. Astartes were what you could push humans to but still retain their humanity. They were built for long term empire running unlike the thunder warriors who were explicitly designed with a half life because they are so inhuman. Custodes are like space Marines if you treat marines as mass produced vs "hand crafted" custodes. This was always canon

>>
>>743805781
>They were built for long term empire running unlike the thunder warriors who were explicitly designed with a half life because they are so inhuman
This is the primary factor of difference between Space Marines and Thunder Warriors. Thunder Warriors were designed to be as strong as possible for short campaigns to unify Earth.
Space Marines were designed to be long lived while retaining as much of the Thunder Warriors strength as possible, because their campaigns to unify the galaxy were going to take hundreds of years. Nathanial Garro was 200 years old by the time of Istavan 3? Maybe older I remember him and Lacton Qruze were talking about the concept of time and how old they were comparing time spent in the Warp and spent in real space, that's something completely unsuited for a Thunder Warrior.

Heroism on a faction scale should come with a harsh, mailed fist. The fact they want to do the right thing can't supercede the necessity to be suspicious of others and enforce authoritarian rules, like in a military. They have the constant threat of rebellion and chaos incursions to deal with, those should be considered while they make their decisions. Different factions can have different answers on his to deal with these threats, but they shouldn't ignore them.
Plus, I feel so many ignore status. A normal human can't really ever be an equal to an Astartes, exceptionally rate cases like malchador not withstanding

Depends on how autistic they are (both in presentation as as characters).

A chapter can only have 1000 full marines but in reality they each have an unlimited number of scouts (trainees) who can fill any vacancies as they appear. So no.
>>
>>743812298
No, each Space Marine chapter has to pay a tithe of 1/3 their geneseed back to Holy Terra, that's one reason that started the Badab civil war the Astral Claws no longer wanted to send their geneseed tithe to Terra because Terra refused to send reinforcements to them to help take back a sector. Because they kept their geneseed tithe they were able to quickly grow from 1000 Marines to 3500.
>>
>>743812621
>space marines have to send a third of their cum back to earth
What? How is it extracted? How do they know it's a third? What does terra do with it?
>>
>>743812298
You're better off asking if chaos space marines are gonna ran out of retards first.

The chaos gods only revive the marines they like and I doubt they have a long list of marines they like. Hell, I'm more surprised Night Lords aren't extinct since they're the most retarded legion of the bunch.
>>
>>743812776
Hasn't it been said that CSM reproduce by scavenging geneseed from battlefields?
>>
>>743812736
Terra uses the tithe to build new chapters. It's extracted the exact same way.
How do they know it's a third because of how it's extracted, how long it takes.
>>
>>743812829
That and sekrit Daemonculaba because GW is super edgy.

Also random chapters or marines joining chaos.
>>
>>743812298
Chapters are just Legions broken into semi-independent, 1k strong regiments.
>>
>>743812959
Daemonculaba is one-shot operation and Peter Turbo disapproves of that edgy shit.

CSM attrition rate is fucking retarded even if chapters falls to chaos since they love to team kill each other so hard it's not even funny.
>>
>>743812776
Why would they run out? Its the same process as normal space marines but without the gay ass tithe the loyalists pay to purposefully bottleneck them
>>
>>743813731
Plus Chaos has Fabius Bile who is not only capable of making Chaos Space Marines but clones of Primarchs. As long as he's compensated he can make whatever. That's Chaos's deux ex machina for never running out of CSM, if I remember rightly I think he's dissecting the Primaris Marines now and figuring out how to make Chaos versions.

Geneseed degradation for traitors are worse than loyalist since most of them tend to fuck around with chaos shit. Another thing is they love to kill each other which causes more lost geneseed. Bile at best is a stop gap measure, but like all other traitors he's got his problems of backstabbing and getting backstabbed. He also sees primaris lame and gay, pushes his newmen project ahead.

Loyalist might have geneseed tax, but at least it's stored in Mars and Terra that can be used tor produce more marines.

Funny that you mention the "Space Marines save women and children by taking out warlords" as one of the more notable bits of lore about the Crimson Fists is a short story in one of the codexes (codices?) is how Pedro Kantor had to march the remnants of his battered Chapter from their now destroyed fortress monastery on their homeworld to regroup with other Imperial forces after a Ork Waaagh hit the planet. A small woman with children were having difficulties keeping up as a large group of refugees had tagged along, Kantor tells the woman she will be left behind if she can't keep pace. When she inevitably does, he picks her up and carries her and her children the rest of the way. It's small, almost negligible in the grander scheme of things, but reminds you that centuries long super soldiers still have some humanity left in them. They would have to, otherwise they'd be no better than their traitorous brothers, who forsook any bonds of brotherhood and loyalty. Also all the Imperial Fists successors are cool like that. Doing shit, taking brutal beatings, and still trudging on fighting for the Imperium and the immortal Emperor.

If for whatever chance you have, check if there's a GW store near your area. Aside from an occasionally pushy clerk trying to get you to preorder some shit, they will usually have space for games with a lot of the terrain and whatnot free to use as it's often painted by regulars or the staff themselves. You can also try to find a hobby store like some other anon said and see what days they do gatherings for tabletop wargaming. I say wargaming because I used to go to one that also had Warmachine/Hordes and Flames of War players as well.

I miss it. Sadly it shut down thanks to the faggotry that was the covid lockdowns.
>>
>>743815775
Unironically, the only media where I've seen a space marine act to protect women in a way that didn't feel cringe, was just a short moment from some random video I forget the source of. Some imperial city is under attack, shit's blowing up everywhere, bullets flying in all directions, and a woman is running away from the chaos, her head down while carrying her child. Then the chaos stops, and she looks up to realize that she has run through the space marine lines, and that they're literally blocking the incoming fire with their bodies. It was a pretty awkward scene, with very lumbering marines, but it conveyed the message very well I thought. That's how marines should save people, by literally placing their own bodies between the people and what's coming for them.
They should not be doing gay shit like lowering their guard in war zones to avoid shooting civilians, carrying women around like baggage, or losing battles by prioritizing saving children over objectives.

Whatever happened to the creator of Astartes?
>>
>>743798190
Depends on the Legion. I typically find that Blood Angel and Black Templar fans in particular are generally pretty cringe because there's a lot of crossover there with irl politics and Christianity, which tends to attract unironic chuds and larpers.

Does anyone else have “phases” of what there into? Like, 2 years ago I was super into 40k but not currently. I’m currently into tactical shooters but who knows how long that will be for. These phases can last months or years. One year could be zombies, another year could be fantasy, next year could be Star Wars, after that could be going back to being obsessed with 40k. I just don’t stay put in one genre or fandom. Is this normal?

>chaos space marines are gonna ran out of retards first.
CSM lasting longer makes sense because at this point they're thousands of years old due to warp shenanigans and are extremely experienced fighters. Primaris loyalists have better equipment but lack of real combat experience, especially against other space marines.
>>
>>743798190
They have been both, it depends on who is writing them and the situation. People tend to hate them due to a mix of anger over the favoritism they get from GW as well as them being pretty generic a lot of the time. But some of the best 40k stuff is about them.
>>

I go to a gaming club every week and see people playing 40k, fantasy, and other war games. Not to mention I have seen tournaments as well. People do it, you just don’t hang around in those circles.
>>
>>743830507
imo its actually becoming more popular due to the enshittification of traditional video games over the recent years
>>

The primarchs are kinda dumb like 60% of the time
>>
I don't like how the orks behave in this game, especially the warboss. they are too grumpy and serious, they should be having the time of their lives

Nu-hammer is shit. We didn't gatekeep hard enough, so all the post-6th ed zoomers got catered to and now the whole setting is neutered family friendly capeshit tier slop.

WHFB still remains largely unmolested.

>Fag ruins hundreds of dollars worth of models to push to virtue signal real world gender politics
Good luck playing with these colors in any place other than your own little friendgroup of gays.
>>
>>743798190
Only the primaris and maybe grey knights are cringe

I mean for most of those nobody who is not mentally ill would even recognize or associate it with gender politics garbage. Like if you just see this you don't think there's anything wrong with it.

30k is pure MCU bullshit. Not everything have to explained. The Heresy should have remain a blurry myth.

I wouldn't be surprised if these were actually played as some Emperor's Children loyalist offshoot chapter.

I don't know anything about WH40K except someone linked me to a book passage
>"This death is ours. We choose it. We deny you your victory."
Before blowing himself and his friend up when a virus started melting them and from that alone I think they are fucking awesome.
>>
>>743828372
No not anymore. The whole Internet likes the same five things and will talk about them for years after they've become stale. Get ready for the same endless 40k spam threads for another decade.
>>
>>743831592
Yeah, I like that they exist tho and it adds to the history of the lore and stuff.
>>
>>743827507

>>
>>743834228
What chapter is that? What's their codex? What's their rules?
I just proved you don't play because that's literally the first question you get asked if you're wanting to play with people.
Also most places don't allow homebrews so good luck.
>>
>>743836398
Nobody gives a fuck you painted your space marines with a custom chapter color.
>>
>>743798190
Used to be until later editions made them cringe...and then we have the apex which is the Primaris Marines.
>>
>>743837298
Yes they do, what chapter? How am I supposed to play against you not knowing what chapter and what rules/ codex for the game?
Outing yourself here Secondry.

>Ultramarine successor chapter with their codex
There, what now?
>>
>>743837538
Which one? What's their name so I can look them up to make sure they're official and not some weird Homebrew and that you're using official models, that the chapter is lore accurate.
>>
>>743798190
They look like toys. Like Rescue Heroes.
>>
>>743837454
My god dude stop trying so fucking hard to flex you play the game, we all do. Jesus Christ, I haven't seen someone trying this hard in a while. You pick the actual faction that corresponds to the army you built. Nobody gives a fuck about the painting.

I've played chaos space marines with night lord paintings on them and nobody was like "uhhh do night lords have different rules" it's just fucking chaos space marines dude they dark pact it's the same shit. Lord almighty, have mercy.

Theyre cool when theyre almost unknowable literally 1 in 10 trillion demigods that have by necessity already left absolutely everything on the alter of protecting humanity and theyre cringe when they have relatable emotions and undercuts
>>
I just want to live in a world where Warhammer, Star Wars, Star Trek, and D&D are all healthy, is that really too much to ask?
>>
>>743834228
Well the issue with this is that the person who would've gone out of their way to paint minis in the color of a bunch of gay ass flags isn't going to just leave it as a little secret. They're going to scream about it to make sure you know what those color schemes represent, and even if you could compliment them just on the mechanical skill needed to paint them well is gone because it's all one big gay dick waving moment. So it's still some faggot being mentally ill while wasting a lot of money and time to do it.

Very on brand for a tranny, when you think about it.

>sees Primaris marines of the Imperial Fists for the first time
>removes own helmet and draws sword
>declares himself and demands a duel
>Imperial Fist captain removes his helmet and starts to declare his name and title
>quickdraw your boltpistol and shoot the Fist in the head

Just another day in the Sneaky Legion.
>>
>>743838503
Warhammer is making more money than ever before and the fluff was always 90% bullshit so what do you mean by "healty"?
>>
>>743839196
I want them all to be healthy at the same time
