So... I do like her, and I think she's the prettiest of P5 party members.
But the problem is that devs made her smart by making everybody else in the party dumb. The moment she joins in, all previous party members start being way more stupid. It just seems like such a lazy way to try and make character seem smart.
Haru doesn't have package like that, so I do appreciate her more as a character.

I've always had problems with this argument. She doesn't invalidate the other party members just because she's smart. She also has a very strong temper and she's supremely brash. She still has character flaws despite her high intelligence, which makes her not a mary sue like people tend to paint her as.
She's also not a mary sue because she starts off as a very insecure person who relies too heavily on others for her own personal successes despite being 18 years old. The absence of any real parent while Sae stepped it up on her behalf means she is suffering from arrested development. At 18, a woman is typically mentally mature, but Makoto isn't because again her parents are dead and gone and she has an emotionally abusive sister.
Yes, she is quick witted, yes, she overtakes Morgana as the planner, but that's merely because she's a savant. Being smart is her only strength, as she is otherwise extraordinarily naive and doesn't understand people as well as others do, as was evident when she thought she could extort a mafia boss with threats, and in another case couldn't understand why getting on people's cases wasn't seen as helpful to those people.
This btw is also why Makoto is so popular. She has very desirable traits while also having notable flaws, making her an ideal waifu with personality imperfections. At her best, she's a dorky cute bean that's really into her passions and fiercely protective of the people she cares about. At her worst, she has anger issues and misunderstands people on a fundamental level. Anyone who calls Makoto a mary sue does not understand what a mary sue is. Futaba is much closer to being a mary sue than Makoto is because she literally carries the plot and the party members are overly nice to her.

This was always a forced meme, based on literally one single line of dialogue. There is nothing wrong with the Futaba arc. The PT dynamic is still good.

What fuck everything up, is when Futaba joins. Futaba LITERALLY does what Makoto “criticism” says Makoto does. Futaba centralizes and destroys the cohesion of the PT. Futaba has more likes of non-battle dialogue than Makoto does despite joining an arc later. She also has far more battle dialogue too being the navigator.

It’s not even just how the characters interact it’s how the plot functions. Because Futaba is this magic anime meme hacker it instantly turns the PT from a high school larp to a national security threat lmao.
