But because Rhea never corrected them, it lead to things like Mercedes nearly being raped by her father because her Crest bearing mother was too old to produce more children. That is something that the story must address at some point.

Dimitri's logic in refusing to impose his own values on Faerghus is rooted in that event, Faerghus already showed him what they do to a king they don't accept. There's also Sylvain's story, Miklan gets an entire chapter dedicated to just him. Sylvain has a Crest and Miklan doesn't therefore his jealousy leads to him being abused by his brother therefore Miklan is ousted from House Gautier therefore chapter 5. Hell Ingrid's story is about how she struggling between the life she wants and needing to sell herself to save her family house. The existence of Crests within Fodlan isn't nothing, they're the most obvious pillars of power or the biggest bargaining chips for ill or nil for each character that has one.
