So why is Valve the only major video gaming company dabbling in Linux? Here we have yet another great example of Valve being ahead of its time, at this rate Steam will be the indisputable platform for Linux gaming and after you'll get salty bitches like Timmy crying monopoly because he didn't care to work on something before it became popular.

Sorry buddy but Xbox is the future of PC gaming, normal people will always prefer Windows over Linux. Consumer PC parts are going away so the only option for Windows PC will be an Xbox. You won't be able to build your own PC as thats part of agenda 2030 of own nothing.

Because the usage rate of Linux is too low to justify anyone remotely caring about it, it requires major companies to bundle it with their prebuilts for it to gain any marketshare which outside of Valve will never happen unless Valve heavily takes the brunt of the cost for such a transition and pays companies like Dell, HP, and so on to bundle with SteamOS instead of Windows which is a laughable thought, it's not user-friendly compared to Windows to the general public even when you have a basepoint to work from like SteamOS, and most importantly it has major issues with anticheats meaning people lose access to countless major games they want to play because of it.

Linux cannot transition from enthusiast to mainstream until
>There is one default distro that is considered "Linux". If anyone even has to begin to hear about distros, DEs, or any of that other nonsense you have already failed. Valve is trying this with SteamOS so at least they're trying.
>Devs get the stick out of their ass about GUIs and mandate everyone makes a GUI for their programs. There is zero reason anyone should ever be forced to touch the terminal barring being forced to edit some esoteric options. The fact you have to use stuff like VIM is disgusting
>GUIs are actually user-friendly instead of mishmashed nonsense that doesn't even do basic stuff like remember which monitor your screen opened up the window on.
Simple example: I use GIMP to quickly convert PNGs to JPGs with little to no quality loss. Every single time I export the image to become a JPG the window that pops up to show me the settings for the export always pops up on my primary screen even though everything is on my second monitor even after shutting the entire program down and it opening up on my second monitor.
>You do not have to jump through any hoops for anything. If you so much as have to hear the word "Wine Prefix" or "Proton" let alone "Compatibility" you have already failed at your task of being easy to use.

>>There is one default distro that is considered "Linux". If anyone even has to begin to hear about distros, DEs, or any of that other nonsense you have already failed. Valve is trying this with SteamOS so at least they're trying.
Part of the reason why there is no singular "Linux" is so that there isn't one single point of failure. I get your point, but it goes against part of the core reasoning. SteamOS is just a nice arch fork that Valve can optimise strictly for gaming, but that's about it.
>>Devs get the stick out of their ass about GUIs and mandate everyone makes a GUI for their programs. There is zero reason anyone should ever be forced to touch the terminal barring being forced to edit some esoteric options. The fact you have to use stuff like VIM is disgusting
Most programs do have a GUI front, you aren't forced to use VIM. Any DE worth its' salt already has an inbuilt text editor.
>>GUIs are actually user-friendly instead of mishmashed nonsense that doesn't even do basic stuff like remember which monitor your screen opened up the window on.
That I can agree with.
>>You do not have to jump through any hoops for anything. If you so much as have to hear the word "Wine Prefix" or "Proton" let alone "Compatibility" you have already failed at your task of being easy to use.
That one is a chicken and egg scenario in that it can't be eliminated until people start targeting Linux. Proton is at least something game devs can target for compatibility without worrying about other shit, no matter the distro.

it's not inevitable. valve can't fix the dumsterfire desktop linux is. when you depend on 50 different communities maintaing whatever vital for the os project they took on or some random guy with his 20 stars repo with a lib your system can't funtion without you will never have a stable, consumer-friendly operating system.

>I get your point, but it goes against part of the core reasoning.
Right, but there has to be one. It doesn't matter if it goes against the ethos of the OS, it has to happen. Without a centralized focus on something it goes nowhere. Arch and all the other collborations can be the basis but something like SteamOS has to be the face. Mint, Fedora, Gnome Ubuntu. Stuff like this shouldn't even be part of the lexicon of Linux to the general public. That should be enthusiast stuff.
>Most programs do have a GUI front, you aren't forced to use VIM.
I know, they've done pretty well over the past decade or so but you're still sometimes forced into using stuff like VIM for whatever esoteric reasons like some editor not working or permission issues. It's still not the standard to not have to open up the terminal which should be the basis of any discussion about Linux to a casual user which it isn't always the case. Again, better than before but from a mass-adoption perspective it has to go.
>That one is a chicken and egg scenario in that it can't be eliminated until people start targeting Linux.
It still has to be addressed immediately if any mass adoption can take place. The end user shouldn't even know that a site like ProtonDB exists because everything they boot up should by default work like a Platinum-rated game if it's made within the past 20 years. I understand when you start going further back than that you'll get into issues which even Windows does (and Linux even beats it in supporting those older games), but the way it's set up now there is no excuse why 99% of games shouldn't run out of the box perfectly no matter what you choose. Yes, there will always be fringe cases like Deadly Premonition or the Bioshock remasters, but I am simply speaking in general.

It doesn't matter that Proton itself is basically magic and that it requires a lot to get working at all, to the end user that is the problem for programmers to figure out if Linux wants to be usable.
>>

>Right, but there has to be one. It doesn't matter if it goes against the ethos of the OS, it has to happen.
Not necessarily, there just has to be one that is popular and stable enough for it to work. The problem comes down to "which one?", because each has their own niche that they cultivate. Ubuntu tries, same with Red Hat, but fuck them. I don't know how you get them to agree at this point.
>I know, they've done pretty well over the past decade or so but you're still sometimes forced into using stuff like VIM for whatever esoteric reasons like some editor not working or permission issues
Most of the time, those permission issues are shit that most normalfag users wouldn't touch to begin with, the kind of stuff that an IT person would use powershell on Windows... at least on Distros that are robust.
>It still has to be addressed immediately if any mass adoption can take place
Of course, but how does a Linux developer do this? Unless if people are making native Linux binaries (Good fucking luck), you do need to have this compatibility layer to do it.
Doubly so for shit like games that uses stuff like DirectX exclusively.

>>743833883
Personally, I use EndeavourOS, because it is Arch with a lot of GUI stuff pre-installed. Manjaro is a good stepping stone I feel to that type of environment.
>>
>>743833883
Do you play games that have anti-cheat or not like the major players or major gacha games? Then just dualboot with a debloated Windows 11. If you don't then I've got CachyOS on a lower power gaming system (1050 and some AM4 parts) which I use for when relatives pop over and I think that works pretty well out of the box.

I personally would never opt for a solo-Linux machine in the state it's currently in and I think the people who do don't really play much outside of older games or need to use certain programs. I tried Endeavour but the devs want to force you to learn how Arch works instead of just use your OS like an OS and don't provide stuff like package managers or simple tools like Cachy does out of the box.

I ultimately don't use it for daily driving because Shadowplay alone is something I use extensively and OBS is not even close to as functional or easy to use as it. GPU Screen Recorder was completely broken when I tried it to the point that the video it recorded only recorded in 5 second increments, and Steam's recording functions are not as convenient let alone good at naming filenames anything but the date. Not to mention I play at least four games that all have anti-cheats that either don't function with Linux or will potentially get me banned for doing Linux methods to sidestep it.

>>743834030
>Not necessarily, there just has to be one that is popular and stable enough for it to work.
Which is essentially the same thing as what I am asking for. It needs to be the face of Linux and the default option when you think of it. You don't say you "use SteamOS", you say you "use Linux". If you have to tell someone you "use SteamOS" that's already a problem. It's like telling someone you "Play on Windows" instead of "On PC".
>but how does a Linux developer do this?
I'm not a programmer so I can't speak of how they do this. As it is they're already doing some crazy work with Proton, but ultimately these things need to work as native as a Windows copy

Even though I hate W11's start menu due to the entire bottom half of it and W10's was kind of messy good lord what are you talking about? Everything just works instantly, is mirrored on the second monitor how I want it without me doing anything, isn't floating above the bottom of the screen like a Mac, doesn't immediately start fighting you if you monkey with it, doesn't randomly crash just because I decided to change a mouse cursor or theme, and I don't get weird issues like a 1080p TV I have my computer hooked up to defaulting to 1280x720 despite not being a 1080i TV.

All KDE really does better is feel far more snappy and responsive most of the time, in terms of actual usage like having my taskbar mirror Windows by being snapped to the bottom instead of floating, having it mirrored without acting like two separate instances of the taskbar, or being stable I don't have that in KDE at all. I also was not a big fan of Cinnamon either but I would still choose KDE over it. The entire "Edit mode" for the taskbar feels like absolute ass to deal with and once you monkey with anything it suddenly causes issues you didn't even know existed.

Dolphin is awesome though. That feels significantly better than File Explorer.

It can't just be one company doing it, you need multiple major brands to all do it which is why I'm saying Dell, HP, and so on. Just having one company do it means barely anyone gets saturated with it. When you have multiple big brands doing it now they actually have a chance to compete with Microsoft putting Windows on everything.
