How the fuck was anyone supposed to know the "CD case" referred to the back of the game box in real life? They just gave you a disc item in-game right before this, so I was trying to find a way to interact with it to look at the back. So stupid.

a FLOPPY disc, retard, not a CD
i did the exact same thing

A very clever and ingenious way to make people look at the PHYSICAL Case, and now PlayStation is nuking physical games…
>>
People were just smarter back then, able to think outside the box and problem solve.

I rented the game and didn't have the case, so I just went through every frequency until I finally got the right one.
Then I went back to the video store, saw the frequency on the back of the CD case, and realized that's what they meant.
I was 11 years old at the time.
>>
>>743839126
it wasn't a floppy disc, it was a magneto-optical disc/disk - a real thing in Japan, and more like a disc in an enclosure - the closest thing in the US would have been Sony MiniDisc players or later the PSP UMDs.
>>
>>743839378
Most people probably just read what to do in a magazine or something or online
>>
>>743840032
I did this too, my MGS1 CD didn't have a case because we got it at a used gameshop in like 2002 or so, I had all my ps1/ps2 games in a jumbo CD case

I played it in 99 and was completely flummoxed by this, tried using the disk item, called everyone on the codec multiple times, dropped it for days probably but eventually I realized "wait there's no way" and put in the frequency on the case itself and it worked.

One of the most incredible vidya moments of my childhood.
>>
>>743838770
Might be a translation thing. I don't think the west ever really thought of PS1 games as CDs (or PS2 games as DVDs) even though they technically were, so there isn't really a natural connection between "CD case" and "game case". I wonder if it makes more sense in Japanese.

>GameFAQs [...] was created in November 1995 by Jeff Veasey
Many players wouldn't have had internet at home, but between work/school/libraries/friends' houses/cybercafes most people could access it if they needed it.
>>
>>743838770
Gimmicks like this really don’t age well, even if they are quirky and cute. Most people aren’t playing MGS1 on discs anymore, so it makes the line feel dated. Same with all the PS3 references in MGS4.

I remember being stuck at the fake wall section and having to go to a friend's house like 4 times so that he could explain to me over and over how to find it since he had beaten the game and I still didn't find it by knocking. I only ended up finding it because I used the first-person perspective right in front of the wall.
Needless to say, I was like 7, and the internet wasn't a thing back where I lived.

I remember that if you call colonel to get the line about her frequency being on the case and then equipped and unequipped the case Meryl's number just ends up in your directory somehow.
>>

They would have figured it out far before waiting to go to the library or asking their mom to get off the phone so they could use the internet. People were just smarter back then, before the age of "smart"phones.

The number is 140.15 which allows for easy brute forcing if you were truly at a loss.

How were you supposed to know the title matters???
When does the title ever matter in a poem??? Most are either untitled, or are called by their incipits!
>>
>>743838770
Oldfag here. PC games asking you to reference the real world packaging and documentation was REALLY common as copy protection in the 80s and early 90s so it was pretty logical to me as a kid. Plus this and the Psycho Mantis parlor trick were pretty commonly discussed as cool things in game magazines or person to person when talking about the game. Not to mention most people had access to dial up by that point and could just go to gamefaqs or whatever if they were that clueless. Probably sucked if you were a little kid that rented it though.

>>743841331
Eh. PS1 games came in the exact same jewel cases as music cds. I definitely thought of them as CDs even with the black back. Not to mention you had stuff like the “secret” cd audio track on symphony of the night. https://youtu.be/QeM7paJ17YM
>>
>>743841645
It’s fun, and led to the fun quirk of that codec screenshot being on the back of pretty much every version of the game. It’s even on the steam page.
>>
>>743843495
Rental stores were told to rent out the game in the actual game case. MGS and Earthbound always came in their actual cases.
>>
>>743838770
I rented the game so had no case to look at. I just brute forced every codec code until I got it right

It's called innovation. Something Kojimbo used to specialize in before he became le mocap Hollywood wannabe man.

You could find out by looking at the CD case before you even played the game. People didn't learn everything about the game from youtube before they downloaded a digital copy. Everybody looked at the packaging and game manuals.
>>
>>743838770
You're just too young/brown for these games. You all need characters costantly chattering and telling you what to do.
>>
>>743841645
Go play games something else or modern then. It's sad fun stuff like this can't exist anymore.
>>
>>743838770
It was a form of copy protection to a lesser degree.
>>
doesn't the colonel eventually just give you the number if you take too long?
>>
This Kojima fuckery, man.

It's funny, though.

Who the hell didn't get stuck at this part?
>>
>>743838770
this was an old trick used ubiquitously in old computer games as an anti-copying measure
it came in various forms
one game i liked as a kid was Life and Death, where you played as a surgeon, and the copy-protection measure a was a decoder ring disguised as a pager that you had to use to return a call before the OR could be used
>>
>>743848432
were they retarded? just take a photo of the case at the store.
>>
>>743843151
Yes, Snake, the CD case.
Compact Discs were invented in the 80s to encode vast amounts of computer data which could be read at high speed only by precise laser technology, the same technology that enables fusion bombs and nanomachines. The Russians were able to reverse engineer early prototypes via corporate espionage, and then proceeded to set up mercenary groups in the Congo equipped with CDs to out compete the vinyl scene, cementing the rule of the legendary hiphop artist known only as Biggie Smalls, from whose cells you were created. You're black, Snake. Never forget your roots.

digital cameras weren't a thing yet
film had to be taken to a store to be developed.

Yes, I have one in my closet upstairs probably. However a ZipDisk is a larger capacity floppy drive. The MO Disk (or disc, cant' remember how its spelled) in the game or if that was local or not is
>disc inside a cartridge drive of sorts. You loaded the whole thing in, not just the disc making it somewhere between the
like pic related. I will grant that some had opaque cases which could make the mistake, but its specifically called a MO in game and that was an actual, separate thing - as in its own branding. In the US we had (often Sony) MiniDisc branded media players that had something similar , it was a MO disc made for music using ATRAC codec. It was not a popular format in the US, more so in Japan where like most advanced shit in the 90s, they did get it earlier.

No it wasn't, you fucking retard. How the FUCK could it have been anti piracy when you can spam call every frequency and talk to Meryl in less time than it took to write this post?! I guess everyone who downloaded the game digitally or emulated just never progressed, huh?

Use your fucking brain, kid

>>
>>743838770
they didn't need to. the game literally gives you the frequency if you don't figure it out.

it's a puzzle, it's supposed to stump you for a moment. without the logical leap of the physical cd case and a little codec screenshot it'd be a pretty lame perfunctory interaction.

Her codec frequency is listed in the manual, along with the other codec frequencies. In the US version it's even on the same page as the registration card meaning it's literally the first thing you see on opening the manual.
