There isn't enough actual lore in the game for any explanation to be anything but extremely speculative. It's more likely there just never was an actual explanation for these statues beyond that the devs thought it would be cool.

What actually is the point of powerstanding? I don't get it. Every time I try to powerstance two swords, or two clubs, or whatever, it seems way worse than just two handing the weapon and having a shield or staff in your left. The extra damage versus two handing isn't usually that much greater. The stamina cost is insane. You can't block or easily switch out to an offhand spellcast. The moveset is usually gimmicky. I don't get it. Sure it's a gimmick but what is the point of the gimmick?
