Do you think a fanwork (fangame or mod) can be on the same level as the original game, or even surpass it? Are there any examples of this? Or at least fangame/mods that did one thing better than the original? be it gameplay, music, story or art direction.
>>
Well, nothing is saying technically that it can't surpass it right? I don't think for instance that yellow surpassed the original game, but it did something different and evoked some really strong emotions, and in places had some better fights.

I can think of two examples.
The original Antibirth mod completed destroyed the DLC of the binding of isaac that came shortly after the mod.
The secret boss fight of the Friendless mod mogs the mad cat secret boss that Tricky Tony released but at least it is not as bad as the binding of isaac example
>>
>>744037785
Usually they aren't, unless the dev really failed, but fanworks are a perfect way to reuse the content which was previously unused or cut from the game. Fan things are usually better at the small things and developing existing threads while bad at building the "frame" of the game.
>>
>>744037785
I still cant believe how good UTYs music is even when held in comparison to the original. it's genuinely insane to me. I expected it to be shit, but one of the things that made me finally give the game a try was getting a recommendation for one of it's tracks and being blown away.
>>
>>744038515
I really should try some of the mods that exist for isaac. it's something that feels for some reason like it shouldn't have fan mods, but I remember seeing one for a fanmade boss about fear of being seen or something like that.

If I remember correctly it's from the Fiend Folio mod
That mod makes Isaac harder because of all the new enemies and bosses's patterns that you need to get used to but it's 100% worth it

that sounds very familiar. I never checked it out myself because I heard "fiend folio" used as a joke for a couple years a ways back, but I didn't know if that was because the mod was bad, or if it was because of some inside joke.
>>
>>744038515
>The original Antibirth mod completed destroyed the DLC of the binding of isaac that came shortly after the mod.
Antibirth is an exception among exception, the mod was so good that the dev team got hired for the original game and a lot of the content from the mod became part of the game in the last DLC

I consider AM2R to be the ultimate Metroid 2.

Black Mesa is arguably superior to Half Life 1 (sans the retarded music choices).

Sonic Mania was originally a fangame and Taxman's Sonic CD is the ultimate Sonic CD.

Megachud is a better megaman than Mighty Number 9.
>>
Fanmods don't really impress me much. Most of the actual hard work was already done, so waltzing in and "improving" it isn't really much to be proud of. I'm not saying a mod can't objectively improve a game, but you don't get to act smug when 99% of the work was already done.

Fangames are fine, though at that point you should just make your own game.
>>
Yeah pokemon romhacks have surpassed the originals by a fair bit even the mediocre fangames.

I'm really happy about the yellow we ended up getting. it's got some failings of fanworks, but holy shit seeing the takes for fan content some of the fandom has, it really could have been so very much worse. It could have been something that none of us would want to even think about.

AM2R looks really good, though I saw a video of a fight that seemed to take WAY too long, though I'm not sure if it was on a special difficulty, or something like that.

a fanwork by definition is just a work based on an existing IP you don't own, you don't really need to be a fan to make a fangame, but most fangames are made by fans of a series

Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers is unironically the single best racing game I've ever played and I love it to death
>>
>>744039973
it is better to avoid dealing with reddit/twitter freaks as much as possible, adding cameos is asking them to check and if they disagree it WILL cause drama
>>
>>744039973
>Would be it okay to add cameos for dead fangames (visually not exactly the same) into your fangame, or that would be too much trouble?
Reminds me of that conversation of the "bar of broken heroes/dreams" a place full of characters from dead fangames, I'm certain it would bring a ton of drama because the UT fandom is just that volatile, I still think it would be a cool idea to give these characters a second chance
>>
>>744040006
I tried that and got filtered by the tutorial
why does a racing game need to many mechanics
>>
Some of those mario kaizo mods were legitimately mpre fun than the original games. Wonder how many hacks are only superior because they dont have to target the lowest skill user base. Like why even mid pokemon romhacks are more dun since not every single fight is just a cakewalk
>>
>>744037785
Call of Chernobyl basically made the entire stalker series obsolete. It even mogs stalker 2.
>>
>>744040136
It's not as complicated as you think, the tutorial is just presented kinda poorly because it was supposed to be the setup for a weird racing/platformer hybrid singleplayer that never got finished. If you haven't played since 2.4 you should give it a shot again.
>>
>>744037785

>>744037785
There are loads of mods for games like thief, quake, doom that absolutely BTFO the commercial content. I'm not even shitting on the base games, but for these older games modders have had decades to practice and work on maps and whatnot, it's not surprising that they get really good at it.

I do think it gets rarer the more modern games get since the barrier to entry gets higher. A lot of mods for modern games tend to just be bug fixes, balance changes, and QoL, which even when they're "better" than the vanilla game I don't think I really give much credit to the modders for doing anything novel.
>>
>>744039805
I'm pretty sure they really did love snoot girl though.
>>
>>744040773
>I do think it gets rarer the more modern games get since the barrier to entry gets higher.
huh, I feel like the barrier is lower than ever if anything and that's why there's a lot of lower quality content. It's easier than ever to learn how to work with stuff so even some people who maybe shouldn't have been allowed on the computer try

more than that, fanworks also extend the feeling when you've got a game that really meant something to you. Playing morrowind then modding it after that, or obsessing over ut then letting myself get into fics (which admittedly a lot of are really bad but still), and then after that getting into UTY

then getting into fics and mods of that.

nta but while I don't know about what drama there was or wasn't with snoot game, I know there's a good number of games that started here that seemed to come to fruition drama free.
Pizza tower comes to mind and that's shocking because one of the musicians was a tranny.
I think it helped that PTG was very drama averse, going out of his way to not engage with it, even ignoring it when he opened his discord up to the public

yes, we get chapters where we don't really get good access to it and it feels lame when that happens honestly. Also castle funk is not as good a theme as "my castle town."
>Should DR fangames include their own Castle Town?
I like the way the dark jail plays into the justice soul dealing with a completely different kind of "castle town." It's kind of sad to me sometimes that we're encouraged not to arrest "innocents" and bring them there because I do want to see what they say in the dark jail but I don't want to make coles life any harder.
>>
>>744042720

AM2R is probably the only example one can truly say a fangame surpassed the output of that franchise, like between AM2R and Samus Returns, AM2R clears it completely. I would put AM2R on equal levels with Super Metroid, never above it but pretty fucking damn close, AM2R is like the ultimate GBA-era metroid game, it takes the smoothness of Zero Mission with the action of Fusion and give it a fun overworld to explore, AM2R may be linear and not as super duper open as Super is (Exploits or not), but AM2R's overworld is a fun time.

thanks I hate it. Yeah I've met gay people who's entire personality revolves entirely around being a feminine gay person and nothing else, but I've also met actual fucking human beings that happen to be gay and have interests and personality.

I guess this is why I could tolerate and appreciate the writing of toby's games previously. Gay characters seemed to be actual characters (outside of when the romance was actively happening), so it didn't feel like I was going through an old era tumblr users wank off session.

I'm in my 30's at least and grew up with a lot of games from the time, so I can appreciate the value of those games. I just never gave that game a shot for whatever reason. Possibly just turning right instead of left and so on since there are so many good games from that era to play.

Its not gay if you do it with a monster
>>
Lisa the Pointless is at the very least as good as Painful and superior to that joke of a sequel Joyful.

All that despite the game still being unfinished.

But there's only one Fight which you cannot even replay after beating. I think Bossrush would be nice

Still impresses me how much of a modding community that game had. or fangame rather I guess?
>>
>>744045445
Probably because it's easy to do stuff in RPGmaker
>>
>>744045534
maybe so, I was going to ask, wasn't that one DRY take that was aggressively shitting on DRY1 also RPG maker, but then I don't actually remember seeing any gameplay for it.
just hours upon hours of reenactment.
>>
>>744045423
A boss rush and a harder version of the chapter final boss would be perfect
>>
>>744045672
I don't think it exists as a game at all

As I remember, that guy made other "games" using rpgmaker but not his DRY take itself.

>>744045927
He said he was working on gamemaker, but I will believe it when I see it

I'm definitely skeptical. in the background you can see room sprites but they seem really flat in a way even default rpgmaker stuff doesn't really feel like.
>>
>>744046116
Oh no, those room sprites are 100% mock ups, there's no way those are actually part of a game, and if they are then this guy is even more full of shit for having criticized DRY's art

He has a fangame made in RPG Maker which is as bad as it looks (pic related)
If he is turning his DRY take into a proper game, he hasn't shared any of it yet

Funny you should mention that. I just finished playing Black Mesa: Blue Shift. I thought it was pretty good, a lot better than vanilla Black Mesa, it makes the combat better and fixes a lot of the annoying level design in the main game. Fighting the aliens is better, fighting the marines is better (still *WAY* worse than HL1 marines though), Xen is better (still has the same problem of dragging on way too long, not matching the proper vibe, and having too many gimmick enemies, but its an improvement), and the worst part of the game, the tank fight, is still better than the helicopter in Black Mesa, because its an actual fight instead of just bullshit (seriously, the only way to beat the chopper on hard is to cheese it)

Its has a lot more content than the original Blue Shift, but more isn't necessarily better. It has the Black Mesa problem of padding things that don't need padding (Xen is the worst offender, but the boss fights and combat encounters always feel like they drag on more than they should). Its definitely got more of a story and feels like less like something that was just thrown together. So in terms of story and spectacle I'd say its better, even if it plays way worse.

>and if they are then this guy is even more full of shit for having criticized DRY's art
that was my thought. Seeing those rooms and hearing that criticism was something
>>744046515
and oh boy, that doesn't evoke confidence.

as before, I wouldn't be so critical but, well when you throw stones in glass houses.
>>
>>744046559
I havent even played the original blue shift not sure if I can really touch a mod of it before I make time to play it.
>xen
you know, I hear people complain about xen in og halflife but I don't remember it very strongly, which usually means it at least wasn't bad enough to stick with me really bad.

There is also a Martlet wearing a fedora

not only is that orange martlet, but there's also a gray axis in that picture as a wagie cashier.

I had no idea the remake for Blue Shift was already finished, I should check that out, even if Blue Shift is the weakest Half Life expansion

I don't know if HL2 counts as boomer shooter. Its not modern, but its also significantly different from Doom or Quake.

Just because they didn't make the art assets and engine code doesn't mean they aren't doing a lot of work. Total conversion mods can have a lot of content, and are practically entirely new games. Look at something like Half Life Echoes, its easily on par with the Gearbox expansions in terms of scope, while having a higher standard of visual fidelity. It really pushes the engine to its absolute limits. Another Half Life example is Entropy Zero 2, its got an entirely new story and setting with lots of new gameplay mechanics, and is a again on par with the episodes in terms of scope.
