WHAT WENT WRONG WITH THIS SERIES?

Nothing?

Didn't Terada retire? Don't hold your breath for another Original Generations.

After Z they simplified the difficulty way too much. Although SRW Y did well the difficulty in both Expert and Master mode so maybe we are getting back into real SRPG experience.

The OG games didn't sell enough to continue being made
The licensed games have slop animation quality and largely get recycled these days + they became way too easy (It was never a hard franchise but like they are unloseable tier now)
>>

The Alpha, Z, OG and the first saga games are pretty good.

As the other anon said, HD sprites have done most harm to the series.
That an admittedly streek of games with bland casts and meh gameplay. I think the 'open' mission does a lot of wrong.
But if they go back to that classic style and do fun stuff like V, they can get great again.
>>744113003
Went freelancer but still works in the series.
>>744114016
Alpha 1 DC, GC/XO, NEO and OE are all 3d. Out of these, only GC has some cult following.
Then there's the SC games which are actually impressive, since they are to scale. But they are RTSs. SC2nd tl never. Rahxephon never again.
>>744114237
Hard to say.
OGs obviously, legit amazing game and is burdened with needing knowledge of 80s and 70s super robot shows. It's also one of the better animated and designed games with great maps and objectives. For instance, Ryusei's route is a logistic puzzle about getting your big stick (grungust) to the enemy to kill it.
If you mean a regular game. V is the best modern game. AP is the hardest game in the series and will actually make you think. W is really well put. And AG is also probably the most balanced game of them all.

None, the franchise is about fanservice and has no redeeming value outside of the fanservice it provides. You cannot divorce how much you enjoy a SRW game from how much you enjoy the series featured in it and anyone who says otherwise is lying to themselves

Yes, this applies to OG too, don't pretend like you aren't salty about MD cutting the Masou Kishin characters or R getting buttfucked every time

I'd like a new OG game without ending up also waiting many many years for a regular one after, I'd like them to drop the 30 and Y format with stage select so they can focus on making the story flow a bit better while not making the game even easier than it was before, on the topic of difficulty I want them to make it so you have to actively engage with all the systems and actually plan so that you don't lose instead of just steamrolling thru every stage easy.

The spritework turning into images of CG models that slide around screen. The general animations turning into mobile gacha tier garbage with no real fluidity to their attacks. Every game for the last 10 years having 90% of it's cast from Z3 and on just so they don't have to make too many new units. New series having barely any characters besides the one main unit.

>>
>>744112596
Multiple things.
The new games are pretty bad, both in terms of writing and animation. 30 and Y especially suck due to their new mission structure.
I imagine bandai is partly to blame since they're probably giving them barely any budget for the games.
Its also should be stated the state of mech anime is abysmal, we havent had a decent mech show in at least a decade if not 2.
And worst of all, their gacha brings in far more money than the real games, so i imagine they dont feel like they should try

>There's quite literally no reason to play GBA over PS2.
Nah, GBA is worth playing too. GBA has beautiful animations too, a lot of amazing music and enough different stages and balance to warrant playing. Especially OG2, the carryover in OGs1 to OGs2 kind of ruins the balance, they didn't do enough to fix it. I guess they figured it didn't matter too much for Ex-Hard anyway which is fair.

>what went wrong
They are putting their eggs all in DD's basket with no sign of stopping.
Like experimental series are making their debut there. Impressive final attacks that should be in console games are created and added there to be pulled via the gacha. Wild crossover moments like other characters piloting mechs from other shows or things like Lelouch from Code Geass getting his own version of the Wing Gundam Zero.
They are saving basically everything that would have been awesome to see in a console SRW and putting them in the god damn mobile game.
>>
>>744112596
My first experience with SRW was with the OG games (loved 1 and 2), i had no idea they were the exception and not the norm, where the "main" series is actually some marvel multiverse franchise crossover horseshit i could not care less about. What a fucking turnoff.

That's just an excuse, nothing about going from PSP resolution to HD resolution necessitated that the animation quality completely go to shit and eventually get replaced with godawful CGI models either. Hell, Y's garbage animation is especially egregious after how well 30 sold, there's clearly no reinvestment of profits going on here.

Yeah, I didn't finish my playthrough with the DLC. I hate the model but they tried more baked scenarios and that wasn't very well-received either. Not sure what I want. No DLC?

>>744128558
30 had the better idea for dlc, bake them into the main story and at most give them 3 or 4 missions. 30s problem is that it was a bloated shit game, dlc was the least of its problems.
The only problem doing it this way, is that unless you plan to replay the game, you're better off waiting for all the dlc to come out

If only. The closest I can compare SRW in terms of animations is Gundam G-Gen, and nowadays it's like night and day. Granted, the later probably has more budget and creative freedom since it's just one franchise they own vs a lot of series they have to license, but still, doesn't take that SRW animations have been on decline for a while.

Licensing and going HD fucked up the development of the series a lot also the success of Cross Omega and DDD made the console series irrelevant since they offered more interactions and fanservice with half the development time the only problem being that they're gacha slop. The only reason the franchise hasn't stopped is because 30 sold really well thanks to steam sales but Y was so unbelievably mid and boring that I honestly don't care because the next game is just going to have more UCslop, Gbitch, GQUUUUUUX and have DLC out the ass.

IBO is an interesting case because apparently there was a lot of staff drama going on in the background including that the director seemingly coming to absolutely despise the main characters.
Franxx and Valvrave just seemed like piss poor planning. I believe a post-series interview with Franxx even had the producer state they literally had no plans after episode 15 and hoped to figure "something" out for the ending.

I’m not a difficulty-fag but it’s too easy now. It all went downhill when they started to weaken the terrain effects. Final nail in the coffin was choose-your-own-mission bs which killed the pacing and the made every stage generic.
>>
>>744156876
Same roster as 30, which is the basic movie roster (Gekkoei Sui, Guren and Lancelot) plus that one black Lancelot, but this time you can use the armored versions of the movie's Guren and Lancelot. Also one backstory mission has you playing as Guren SEITEN against the other playable X CG units as the TV series finale.
>>
>>744155358
>You don't need to play everything and the game can be beaten under 2 hours if you just do the main missions
How was anyone supposed to know that 90% of the game is irrelevant filler missions?

Anyway the series has really stayed too far from the WWII analogy that made it great. It’s just anime episode retreads with crossover dialogue now. The high stakes world war setting is long gone
>>
>>744112596
All of the new mechanics they add to help the player are shit that do nothing to shake up the foundational gameplay, I preferred the squad system they had going on for a while even if it took a little more micromanaging. I also think I'm the only guy in the world who wouldn't mind a game where they go back to the classic and static SD sprites, so long as they're well illustrated. I'd rather look at something like the 2014 SRW HD remake than the awful pseudo-3d sprites they're using now, and it'd mean better unit variety too.
>>
>>744151605
I watched it because J got me interested. Early episodes have a very obviously small budget for animation, but I had a good time with it overall, as someone who isn't great at reading into all the deeper meanings of things, I enjoyed it about as much as Eva.
>>
>>744155298
They need to take more inspiration for the writing from the older games too, nothing in modern SRW even comes close to touching some of the stuff in @G. That mission where Kouji has to sort all the familial bullshit out with Tetsuya with the Getter event happening in the background is the peak of the series for me.

The HD full transition with SRW T killed the spirit of the series

- the older games had more passion put into them in the animations, with the ultimate attacks actually translating to that, as they took time and entire sequences to show. The last decade of games all that build up is nonexistent and mostly feel like mere flash animations

- The plot was better, with writers taking the effort to combine series settings and development. Nowdays it is always "Hi I come from another dimension, let me join you". One of the best memories for me is the EoE stage in MX, with Asuka at first dealing with the Dragonar bad guys army making up for the JSSDF and then your guys doing a boson jump with the nadesico right when she is about to get fucked

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfYupka6OJI

The entire Alpha series is where the series shined the brightest imo

hell, those games even had various little cutscenes like this to show the fucking robots:

>>
everyone says srw is an easy series compared to other srpgs but I remember having a hard time with the og games on the gba. that one level where you fight the inspectors in space that you weren't supposed to win but had to anyway to unlock some secret shit took me like 3 hours of save state abuse. was I just retarded and playing the game wrong?
>>
>>744163925
no, that is the only way to get the super duper items, even Mekibos comments on it if you do it lol
>>
>>744163925
Save abuse is a feature in SRW. They more or less intend for you to do it that way. SRW varies in difficulty wildly, usually when people are talking about the games being very easy they're talking about the past decade or so of the series, I would say that the older games usually challenge you at least a little and some are pretty hard.
>>
>>744163971
how were you expected to be able to do it playing on real hardware?
>>
>>744164083
You make a square on the White Star with its massive terrain boosts and you whittle away at them. You can save at any time in these games so you can do the same save abuse, it just takes longer. It's not really a question of your units being threatened, it's more a question of your hitrates declining as their Potential rises.
>>
>>744164083
you can't, as the enemies that appear are basically end game bosses and the whole objective is for you to run away like a bitch

the trick to beat them abusing the moon base terrain and savescumming like crazy is not intended for the first time you play it

>>
>>744164378
The weapons are pretty good but they're not substantially stronger than other attacks you have access to. They're mostly nice for handing off to people that need kill counts for secrets who otherwise have lackluster options. The Steel Soul and Hero's Mark are just alright on EX-Hard unless you're doing no upgrades period, mostly because bulk isn't a concern otherwise. The Custom CPU is really good, that's fair.

I got that route by playing like a retard with no knowledge of moonrunes.
That's how much I enjoyed SRW. I would recognize some words/kanji by exposure and context but mostly the ones attached to attacks, menus and spirit commands.
That's how much I enjoyed this series.
Back in mid 2000s a friend noticed I was playing Fire Emblem on my gba and he told me about this game with "cool robots" that played similarly. It was OG2.
Back then I wasn't even aware of the mecha genre in general other than cultural osmosis by anime exposure. Then I discovered that other games in this series had a crossover element and they had Gundam Wing guys among them etc.
I don't even know when the @G .iso got translated but that was the first one other than GBA OGs that I got to play in English.
Good times and god bless MNeidengard FAQs with general plot beat explanation.

>>
>>744168396
If you know it from SRW, I would give it a chance.
It is a children's anime but it's always satisfying to really see how some series were adapted, especially when their plot was well integrated into the crossover, like GGG was in @ and W, for example.
But I'd say GGG is one of these series that SRW made better.
>>
>>744168396
I'm of the opposite opinion of the previous anon, the show kinda drops of a cliff in the second half, the plot isn't interesting, the only unique and cool part about the show is the teamwork and tool aspects, the creative problem solving approach to fight scenes, you really only see in the first half.

The thing is about engaging writing and an interesting show, I dropped Raijin-Oh because despite the pretty cool schoolwide transformation scene, the rest of the show was utter dreck
>>
>>744168835
Yeah, that's true. Don't let it keep from the other Eldrans though, Ganbaruger and Gosaurer are both way better. The former reveling in how utterly absurd and bizarre it can get while also focusing on the families of the three main kids instead of the whole class, the latter being a little more mature and having an actual plot
>>
I just want to see cross over of various giant robots doing giant robot things, my only real complaint is how animations feel like they've declined despite being flashier. I used to have this issue with G Gen specifically, but now both series have devolved into the same lazy style attack animation flow with no sense of feeling dynamic (instead having this samey fake dynamic look of dodge dodge hit formula that gets old fast.)

Oh and personal preference, but would love a crossover with Gad Guard and Big O together.
>>
one of the shows I watched because of SRW was Getter Robo Armageddon and idk why it's one of my favorites.
Even though you know the good guys will win in the end, you still get the feeling shit's fucked up and hopeless when the drama is taking place. Makes their final victory very satisfying.

>Zeta Gundam is based off of Wing Gundam's battle data.
>Angel Halo can fuck up Side 3

>Endless Waltz happens but it's not THAT important

>Crossbone Gundam shit happens in Alpha 2(because in part of fuckery due to Alpha 1/Gaiden) aka The Jupiter Empire is PISSED

AP is challenging, it requires you to maintain square formations more than any other SRW through EWAC and enemy quality is high. Mostly what makes the game tedious is people not engaging with hitting the retreat conditions on bosses, properly raising your average level by doing so along with the parts and funds makes the game significantly easier. There's also weapon upgrades having crazy scaling that some people might miss but that's a strategy issue.

>I'd like to see HOW the SRX gets destroyed
in the alpha timeline the SRX gets decomissioned by the feddies along the team, just with like many other machines due to being too powerful

by the time the balmar attack again they hastily put together the machine but, since the space jews fully studied the SRX from tip to toe as it was one of the most powerful earth machines, they developed all the tactics to properly counter it, nevermind the fact Ingram was (an unwilling) spy in the first place and had a hand constructing the thing, so of course the Balmar knew all about it

in the OG timeline I don't think they can even use the same excuse, as at this point there are so many alien factions that are somewhat in good terms with earth so the balmar alone are able to fuck up all the earth forces, including the SRX team at this point? unlikely

AP has you learn Valor on most pilots between 10-15. If you puzzle out the solution to killing the bosses in the early chapters instead of letting you retreat them, you hit that pretty early. Deimos notably learns it at 10 and he's one of your best units. Shiro learns it at 12 and FAG is one of the better suits in the game, even regular Grandpa is fine too. The problem comes when you don't get those early boss kills and a bunch of people join your party at a much lower level and drag your average down, which makes you take several more chapters to reach it, but if you play the early-game right, it's not an issue and you'll have Valor to spend on tough targets.

They'll just make Balmar super powerful to the point that they destroy both SRX and the Hagane, probably to shove the tronium from both into the Banpreios.
And possibly the SRX using the Hagane's buster cannon as HTB as last resort in that event.

Like when they were doing SRW 30 interviews. Another reason they had all the OG units in 30 was to tide people over until OG3. I think they hoped OGs3 would be the next one, but got bogged down.

I have a lot of nostalgia for it since I'm an oldfag who watched it a decade ago. In my memory half the appeal was in it being a pretty entertaining monster of the week show that gets a surprise actual plot in its second half. The last episode was also one of my faves of any anime to this day.

Don't listen to the faggot shitting on Final either. Its "edgy" and heavy on fanservice because its made years later for the teen/adult otaku audience who are the only people who would care about a GGG followup. Its pure hype but with a pretty boring middle.

Brain Powered is quite literally just a bunch of people trying to raise an undersea ruin but our heroes are afraid that if it escapes the ocean bed then it would kill or at the very least, severely harm the planet.
The esoteric parts about it has to do with the character interaction until when you realize that its just a commentary about the impact of parents, especially mothers have on their children. There's a reason why Tomino made a mother into the final boss of BP or the fact that all of the heroes basically treat their brains like children.
>>
>>744153894
>Did they fix the almost total elimination of transformable units
Actually doubled down on this. Units like Zeta just transform for movement or battle animation now, rather than gameplay. Only transformable units are the Getters and some that "transform" to power up like Dynazenon/Gridknight combining or Da-Garn -> Great Da-Garn. Note the Getters now can transform after attacking too, which makes Getter 3 much more useful as a tank.

>terrain bonuses
Yeah, actually for this. Y's maps have a lot more emphasis on terrain, as long as isn't space. More limited terrain rankings for many units too, with S Air becoming very rare.

>unit costs, and such?

Yep, upgrade costs are higher, and you use money for both unit upgrade and pilot skill upgrading. Energy costs also are generally higher across the board making it a much more relevant resource.

>>744175656
>They fired Terada and let some retards who have no idea what they're doing handle the series and killed OG and Masoukishin
Terada was still responsible for 30. Y was a direct improvement on that (series line up aside, where 30 had the whole anniversary hype going for it).

Y really does feel like they're trying to bring SRW back to some middle ground between the PS2 era and modern.
Even changing the engine for the first time in forever seems like we're definitely entering a post-Terada age for the franchise.
Just need to see what the game afterward is like because they're clearly milking Y to test bringing stuff to Unity

Even the base game ending was just kind of open (although not an actual cliffhanger like 30's base ending), DLC packs 1/2 and the Expansion just opened more plot threads without finishing anything from the main game.

I hope the units add this time are mostly upgrades though, rather than new series from zero.

No.
>>
>>744177067
After that talk, the final scene in 30's base game ending had new enemies appearing and the team saying they'll launch again to face them. Then you could face them in front battles but no plot development until the real end update later on.

Y does have enemies appearing after end-game, but you only get that plot point introduced if you start a front battle post-endgame, rather than it being thrown the ending itself. Then if you start a skirmish you get a scene about the ghosts of the evolvers after the final battle being spread around the world rather than vanishing completely.

>AP is known for having quite the damage sponge bosses like MX portable.
MXP's problem is that they attempted to address the complaint about MX's enemies being too frail by blatantly increasing everyone's HP by 50% when in reality, the issue was that the game loved to throw shitty low HP mooks at you early on. Your actual damage output once everyone gets going in MX is kind of insane thanks to MX having the single strongest variants of Attacker and Revenge in the series, on top of inheriting Impact's silly damage quirks. Lmao Twin Laser Sword breaking the endgame in half.

AP on the other hand suffers from many mooks being annoyingly bulky, eg the Daimos/Grendizer fuckers but the bosses are actually fairly tame outside of a handful. It also features incredibly cheap weapon/en upgrades, so you're actually encouraged to just funnel all of your funds into those and let EWAC/Parts handle your bulk. Put some emphasis into beating retreating bosses by raising OG, Kazuya and Domon for example and then the game becomes significantly easier.
