no amount of utility boosting will convince zillenials to switch to Linux, millennials will switch to Linux mostly if they can keep working/gaming their forever games and get rid of Microslop. fun fact governments use Linux in order to avoid the "phone home" of windows 11. if even governments know W11 is full of shit? why don't people switch: games/programs needed to operate do not run on Linux yet but do on Mac/Windows.

At the end of the day all game code gets compiled down to machine code; the OS you're developing a game on has no bearing on that process.

I already did last week.
It was quite the ride learning how to customize everything and fixing a bunch of problems.
LLMs helped a lot.
But once you figure everything out it becomes easy, even doing stuff via the terminal.
It's so much more faster too. Just doing stuff like using a browser or looking through files is fast as fuck.
Also no ads or bullshit from microsoft or other companies begging you for money.
It just werks.

All UMPCs are already PCs, it doesn't make sense to specify that way as opposed to
>I've been using my steam deck docked as a desktop pc
The "using my steam deck docked as a" part doesn't make sense if the as = something it literally is. He's using his his docked Deck as if it were a desktop PC, meaning it's not actually a desktop PC but another type of PC.

I grew up from the multiplayer stuff and it doesn't affect me on Linux, but I still have a big problem. One is piracy, pirating games on windows is as simple as clicking a .exe or mounting an iso. Same with modding, unless you are using steam workshop modding on linux require way more steps. Like, I'm aware that a Linux mod manager just released, but it's still very fresh. And other thing is modding switch games, it's a very difficult rocess on linux. I still hate windows, I'm buying a lot of games I pirated on steam to switch to linux on the near future after I can no longer use Windows 10 IoT LTSC in 2032.

>>
>>744200465
It's simple, zooms are just less tech savvy than zillennials, and zillennials are less tech savvy than millennials. We've seen a greater shift towards "it just werks" since the late 90's and as a consequence it has become more difficult to ask people to invest time in understanding how something works on a more fundamental level. As far as Linux has come it still requires some troubleshooting on the individual's part, and that is a rough sell the further up the age brackets you go.

When Linux gets better support for anti-cheat games and wider software support in general. The good news is that I'm already Linux-ready in the event that I switch (I'm on AMD) and I've already tested the system on an old laptop so I can work comfortably with it, for the most part.

I share your sentiment, but at the same time the geenie is literally out of the bottle. Again I wholeheartedly agree that stability should come before speed, but the times are what they are; it's adapt or die.

>Nigga why would anyone vibecode a backdoor
nta but he isn't talking about intentionally coding a backdoor into the system. The issue with vibecoding is that you're using a set algorithm to generate the code, and someone can therefore easily reverse engineer your system to find vulnerabilities, especially if the person coding is just trusting the LLM's output without checking for points of exploit.

Literally *last week* WordPress suffered a massive exploit because someone used an LLM to find vulnerabilities in code they knew were vibecoded. It was so bad it allowed for RCE without even a fucking login. That's the equivalent of designing a house without doors or windows.

You know why you don't use 1234 as a pin? because humans all think the same way and that's a combination many people will think to use. imagine that idea but across every single algorithm, every function, every database schema. that's what coding with LLMs is like.

In that window I'm interested to see what happens to the technical debt accumulating over its past few years. Will we see a meaningful Windows 11 rewrite?

Shit like RCU tweaks those special sauce distros set in their KConfigs, weighting whether or not you need extra security circus like memory hardening features (zero on init, zero on free) and the like.

>I had to update 3 times today.
That isn't what is happening. You had multiple bands of updates is all. Some updates require service restarts or system reboots after a prior update before the next in the chain can be done. This happens when you avoid updating for a significant period of time or use an old image to install. The same thing used to be common in Windows until Windows 10 when they improved their cumulative updates (rollup updates that contained all previous and such) but even Windows still requires it from time to time with their SSUs.
And YES you DO want them. Otherwise you shouldn't be using a bleeding edge rolling-release distro. That is the purpose of such a distro, that you're always on the cutting edge of software chasing performance and new features. If you don't want that there are alternative stable release distros. But all of the good gaming distros are going to be rolling-release model, even PikaOS which is on the "test" Debian (rolling release model).
Personally outside of the server environment stable LTS builds have no business existing. Open source software is at its best when development is ongoing and things are in a constant state of being improved/fixed.

because it varies
on balance there is going to be a cost for the translation layer. Instances where Linux is objective faster usually have something to do with file system reads. DirectStorage was supposed to address this in Windows, but last I looked any game that used is just stuttered like shit to the point of being nearly unplayable. It was never a problem on Linux, because ironically, it didn't support it. Instead of having the GPU directly access and decompress assets, Linux was having the CPU do all of that, then forwarding the results on to the GPU, where most benchmarks let GPUs run flatout, meaning the GPU load from texture decompression becomes noticeable.
In practice?
tl;dr it's complicated, depends entirely on system configuration, CPU overhead, GPU utilization, etc, etc.

I have been on linux about a year and a half now. On balance, I haven't looked back. If there were a performance penalty, I didn't feel it, and what I traded in frequent Windows system updates (notoriously containing bugs), I gained in updates whenever the fuck I feel like it, which generally apply faster, and with 100% fewer nagging (have you made backups with onedrive?)

Fuck windows. 2 or 3 FPS tax has been worth it, pretending it was even there in the first place.

In the Windows side you missed all the nocd/nodrm cracks, as well as all the patches and fixes you have to find so that it can run in modern Windows because they somehow broke backwards compatibility with older games whereas with Wine now it just werks more often than not.
We've reached the point that Windows requires more tinkering to be usable and for games, especially older ones, to just werk compared to Linux.

I love how my deck just constantly keeps getting better. Consoles could fucking never, so glad I switched.
>>
>>744239328
its funny because out of all the games he could chose he chose cod. its peak consoleslop even on pc. it has the same aim assist so most pc players play with a gamepad.
the kind of faggot that gets salty about someone else seeing improved performance.

People can torture and cherrypick stats both ways. Linux is worth using just o get away from windows at this point regardless though.

I have literally never had a game crash on me while using proton and I've played probably around a thousand games with it at this point.
>>
>>744239810
T. Never played bannerlord, and his games are 2D indietroon
>>
>>744239613
people put too much weight into the benchmarks anyways when usually the benchmarks are just a dude testing on a fresh OS install, no background processes running, etc. when most players have a browser with 100 tabs open, 15 versions of anticheat waiting to be requested by the game that installed them, spotify playing, and on a 3+ year old install.
>>
>>744239869
Bannerlord is rated gold, git gud.
>>
>>744240087
Yep and also crashed a lot LMAO. Nice emulator, faggot, for a 6 years old game.
>>
>>744240213
I'll believe it when I see it. At this point if a game crashes I'm more inclined to blame the game or some other factor than proton.

No, because the kernel handles everything. A program compiled for windows is going to send win32 api calls to the windows kernel and then the kernel is going to make the CPU execute the machine instructions.

Kinda want to do the jump, I'm going to buy a new PC and an AMD card for that option, I don't play the usual MP games that require anti cheat but how do you make porn games work like from dlsite and such, adding them to heroic too?

my pc didnt go to sleep on mint, it was really annoying. whenever the screen was supposed to turn off, it would immediately kick back to the lock screen.

Depends more on the engine of the porn game? Like sometimes I had to set the game to use WINE's window's XP mode, other times it just freaks out because it's not inside the fake C:\ drive folder. I've heard shit like needing to install locals (I don't know how to do this) for some games too. Lastly sometimes it's a renpy game with a linux build already or it runs well already with proton because it's on steam.
So sadly you're going to have to do some research when installing these games, as there's not a one size fits all approach, but it's possible.
>>
>>744243901
I have never had a problem with any wegs or dlsite crap, what porn games give you trouble? Most I ever have to deal with is sometimes it doesn't like the folder name being in japanese.

Just a Kirikiri and WolfRPG engine, plus another game I can't remember it's engine or find right now iirc.

I had trouble with a WolfRPG game myself. My issue was that music wasn't always playing properly. I was able to get it to work by using winetricks with directmusic and gmdls
desu It's pretty hard to find resources once you get obscure enough and it's not rpg maker or on steam. You'd think more linux autists would be weebs but apparently not

Literally no need to do this.

A broken port? Most games run using proton and aren't ported, retard

Change distro, since that one is run by a retard.

I update usually a few times aweek, right before bed, it does it automatically and then shuts down the computer after only taking a few minutes to do so. very easy and hassle free desu.
>broken port of a 2012 indie game
of the 300+ steam games I have 99% of them work just fine. Almost all of them AAA or AA.
> ecause some fedora-tipping neckbeard coded it using vibes and Copilot.
I think you are confused anon, that would be the microsoft windows kernel, they admit that most of their code is now written by AI.
Linus has stated on the other hand that AI code can only be commited to the linux kernel after it has been thoroughly checked by a shit tons of people. There is not a single piece of vibe code in the entire linux kernel and if you think there is feel free to post the exact line of code. Its all open source, just tell us which line

Steam Deck not have a graphics card, it´s always a APU. The "massive performance improvement" is because devs desing games for that APU.

But games aren't designed for the Deck, they're designed for general Windows and (rarely) Linux systems and Desktops.
