>>744197071Sephiroth is, in my opinion, the best antagonist in the mainline series' history, at least his depiction in the original game. He's up there with Golbez, Kefka, Kuja, and Exdeath. There's a lot to like about him as a bad guy, you get to see his descent into madness finding out he's a mutated freak. I remember the first time I exited from Midgar and arrived at Kalm to witness the flashback. At that time I didn't even know there were such things as world maps, fucking around on there and then going to Kalm to group up and talk more about this guy that just fucking murdered the President was genuinely pretty mindblowing for me at the time as far as storytelling went. It even had a cinematic for it, crazy. That's really the reason why I think he's great, we actually get to know the guy. It's absolute horseshit that a fair number of ultimate antagonists in FF are literal whos that come out of nowhere at the end (Cloud of Darkness, Zemus, Ultimecia, Necron) or extremely underdeveloped (Exdeath kinda, Kefka, Vayne, Ardyn). I wouldn't even say Sephiroth is an *amazing* antagonist, it's just nice that they thought to include writing that actually gives us some insight into his psychosis. It's just a shame that his character was hijacked in the early 00's and changed into a bishounen Hisoka-style madman to suit popularity at the time. I can bear with Cloud's alteration into a perpetually mopey teenager as it's somewhat amusing, but Sephiroth's shtick is seriously tiring by now to me.
