Does he deserve it? I feel like my notebook has gotten slower ever since the shovelware of Steam is running in the background.
>>
>>744204204
that's a weird question op. what does deserve mean in this context? he obviously made the money go into his bank account, so what are you actually asking here?
>>
>Does he deserve it?
Yes
The industry wanted PC gaming dead or at least severely crippled during the 2000's, meanwhile Gaben actually supported it with his private platform.
>>
>>744204204
Why isn’t he using that money to make some games?
>>
>>744204313
Yeah people now like to pretend otherwise but PC gaming was pretty much dead for 9 years
If you were a gamer in the 2000s you most likely played on a ps2 and a 360
Minecraft, csgo, and league of legends rebirthed PC gaming but steam was a good framework that was the glue until those came out in the early 2010s
I still remember cliffy b openly shitting on PC
>>

We don't need more games, and superyachts employ a lot more young people with stable incomes to support starting families than video games

It's awesome this guy got so rich and flaunts it because he decided to create a pro-consumer platform, while developers seethe at his wealth because they're morally incapable of doing the same. Maybe there's some justice in the world.
>>
>>744204859
>we don't need more games
>year 2005, 500 games per week on ps2, most of them good

Yeah, sure, we don't need more games, in fact, we need to stop making games, only CAPCOM need to make games, and they need to be Remakes, a Remake of Pragmata would be nice.
>>
>>744204563

Gaben fanboys did.
The dumb little shits who praise Gaben for bringing console port #9474 to Steam.
The worthless cumstains who love sifting through 1000 cubic meters of shovelware to find the actual game releases on Steam.
The soulless rats who use words like "framework" and "platform"

I love how people conveniently ignore the purposes of his yachts, they're bad actors trying to portray Gabe as the generic greedy billionaire. Gabe uses his yachts for oceanic research purposes, he often teams up with scientists for such missions. Did you know that we know more about the surface of the moon than of the earth's oceans' floor? Gabe's yachts are not for greed or leisure, he's using them to massively help us understand our planet, more specifially a critically understudied part of our planet
>>
>>744204542
You don't just pay to make games. There are office spaces to lease and hundreds (if not thousands) of employees to consider. It's a long-term investment. He'd have to aquire both and basically reboot their entire game dev sector that's been shut down for years. And, frankly, he's not going to find any employees that meet the standards of 20 years ago. They're all gone.

zoomers using a term they heard somewhere that sounded clever. Steam is bloated, yes, but that's a personal opinion. Fact of the matter is there's a lot of background processes for features that people want and don't consider to be bloat. So, whether or not the resource usage is warranted is not as cut and dry as my printer drivers using 4gb of my SSD. Steam actually has useful features.

It's not that he's cooler than anyone else so much as Valve being privately owned. When a company goes public, they are forced to do everything they can to turn a profit. I mean LEGALLY forced. It is their legal obligation to stockholders to do everything they possibly can to keep the numbers going up. Which means long-term investments and riding out rough patches is not an option.

Which is why Xbox is shitting the bed right now. They had to raise GamePass prices not so they could make money out of greed, but because they could be dragged into court for not doing it if it meant increased profits.

Steam doesn't have to worry about any of that shit. If they were publicly traded, you would see the entire Steam interface blanketed in adds and pop-ups and the platform would be dead right now, just like EGS. Being private is what's keeping Steam alive.

I am not that rich, but I am rich enough and my uncle is on the bottom rung of very rich enough to realise even if you have lots of money most things you can get or buy aren't actually any more unique or special than what everyone else can buy for status. A very expensive phone is still basically mass-produced in a factory and every other phone basically does the same thing. Property can be big or small but everyone still lives and shits in the same kind of toilets. Even luxury cars aren't the sole province of the chosen/grafting few. They do not automatically tell people you are just higher class.
But Yachts/Boats are, because oh my fucking christ are they a huge fucking money hole. That's my theory anyway my uncle went into planes instead (also because his company makes mostly commerical plane parts and weirdly, ejector seats) so his thing is owning a private airfield and small fleet of microplanes/cessnas.
Also divorces, he's 84 now and been divorced 8 times. I have more cousins than every other type of family member combined. Thanks Uncle Nick. As for me I'm just comfortable so I can only spec in pleb stuff like paying £40,000 for a watch that does the same thing as a $12 casio. Sad.

It always was amusing how valve basically turned into a cult with gabe as their leader. In the early days Gabe was actually pretty cool and responsive to the community but those days have been looooooooooooong gone. It boggles my mind how people still think valve cares about them. Valve also single handily killed off the physical game market on PC and also openly embraced loot boxes which /v/ gives them the pass on for no reason other than being a cult member.

Yes.
Valve built Steam up when PC gaming had been almost abandoned by most others.

The others are mostly just salty grifters who want in on the success without ever having done the initial legwork and are pissed that people see no reason to switch over to them.

>mostly the same around 1m+ tier
>this is probably the tier where people can start collecting cars or other luxuries

>probably changes beyond 10-100m

>1B+ not that many changes from previous tier
>biggest differentiators are the yachts I suppose, the only real way to flex on others

You're making poor choices to compare these tiers as "close" or "not much difference."

Wealth is a measurement of power. Those "tiers" you speak of extend a person's power and influence by ENORMOUS values. Personal impact, family impact, neighborhood impact, community impact, state impact, national impact, continental impact, global impact, futuristic impact, existential impact... Being able to heavily influence your neighborhood is considerably less powerful than being able to heavily influence Malaysia.
The only "little difference" I would point to is how much difference it would make on that wealthy person. As exponential the rise can be from "starving" to "Michelin chef," so can be the plateau of "how good I feel today."

Do you want to speak on Gabe or do you want to speak on 620 million humans living in North America?

You CANNOT use the word "deserve" without understanding differently equal perspectives!

Half the people who hear the word "deserve" smile and shout with glee:
>Hooray!! Now I'm getting a present! A gift! My life is better! I'm happy!
The other half who hear the word "deserve" frown and become reclusive, thinking:
>Oh no! Now I'm going to jail! Punishment! My life has more suffering! I'm unhappy!

You MUST understand that "deserving" depends on values. And there are lots of different values.

It's a big house that moves.
It's essentially one of the only actual tangible measures of wealth that exists still, in the sense that very few other people can possess such a concept. You can have a massive 30 bedroom compound mansion but a) it's just a house but big and b) you're still bound by location. An island is in the sea but it doesn't move.
Wealth display competition is also easier to achieve as it's a very narrow marketplace.

If flying castles existed, or rich people could live in magical teleporting houses, nobody would have yachts, they would just do that instead.

That's pretty much how I remember it. Maybe not right at the start of that decade, but by the mid 2000's PC games were practically impossible to find in stores. It was like one shelf of an end cap at Game Stop/EB Games/ whatever else there was. Woe upon you if you didn't have a local CompUSA. Even if you managed to buy something you'd be probably be locked out of it before long thanks to SecuROM anyways.
I think it was around the end of that decade that Steam was finally picking up steam (heh) as a store and drawing in developers and publishers. It was actually a quality selection back then too.
>I still remember cliffy b openly shitting on PC
I'll never forget Tim Sweeney telling anyone that'd listen that PC gaming was dead and consoles were the future. Oh, the ironing.
>>
>>744204313
This, pc gaming was basically declared dead a couple of times by magazines back then, everything revolved around which console was better. PC gaming magazines were called niche, because computers were considered office machines. Console gaming was already a nerdloser hobby, so playing games on office machines was absolute friendless strange weirdo tier.
I think people nowadays can't imagine how downlooked anything nerdy was back then, all of that took a complete 180 turn within 20 years, thankfully

Rich fat people grow unsatisfied with their mansions because they actually don't walk around them at all, it's much more convenient and comfy to live in only a biggish-house sized section of the mansion. A yacht is a more tangible use of mansion-tier funds if you don't run marathons: a livable house that roams around and brings in the sea breeze is basically the most relaxing concept imaginable for a tired guy that everyone tries to bother.

Digital is objectively when you have the decentralized freedom to pirate anything you want if it comes to that. It's more convenient and will never got lost or break down. You can put anything you want on a harddrive and keep that bitch backed up on a cloud. That includes steam games, btw. The physical media debate is only an issue for console owners who are trapped with a single store that can be fucked with by the singular entity in control of it. it would not have 'died' but it would have become more and more irrelevant especially with the percieved problem of piracy making them view it as a unreliable market. what the consumer sees is different from what the publishers see, regardless of whether or not piracy was actually that detrimental to consumers purchasing newer copies of games, it does not change the fact that the publishers periceved it to be that damaging. id imagine that without steam, the trend of publishers trying to solve the problem by making their own online stores and going with online drm for their games would have accelerated and would have become even more cancerous than they already are now, and that would have slowly killed the PC as a platform, at least for major publishers.

If it really was a monopoly, GoG would’ve crashed and burned like Origin and uShit, but they’re successful too.

Yep I remember several different websites like Direct2Drive or whatever that were acting as storefronts selling anything from AAA to "indie" games. Of course none of them had good clients yet, but the idea was still there. But I don't think it's zoomers like you. It's probably just Valve cultists who never went beyond the steam ecosystem so they think only Valve was looking at digital distribution and only Valve could save PC games. In reality if Valve didn't do it, someone else would. Worse come to worse PC gaming stays physical for another decade.

but so you think would those shelves be as stocked in the 2010s? i'm talking about the long term trajectory, even without steam, publishers will still try to make their own online stores to solve the 'issue' of piracy and the measures they would have taken would be far worse than what sresm provided, and if you want to know what would have been the end result of that storefront war, you only need to look at the current state of streaming sites and their aggressive monetization schemes.

There is no team, there is no goal, years of inactivity and the moment Gabe act it’s when it got recent history. This is Umbrella Corp evil stuff that we hate.

I can't predict that far in advance a reality that doesn't exist. All I will say is
a) PC gaming wasn't "dead" in the 00s like you claim
b) PC gaming was actually growing unlike you claim
c) PC gaming had an ever expanding storefront presence than in the 90s
d) DRM was rare, in like 5% of all PC games, and the biggest offenders got tons of push back on mainstream media like IGN and GameFAQs
e) There were several online digital distribution platforms trying to do the same thing as Valve so it is not something they invented
f) Indie games weren't big yet, but they did exist even in Japan which had its own digital distributors like dlsite

To clarify, I think Steam does a lot of good "overall" and pushed the PC vidya industry forward. I just have to call out any underage who keeps spreading lies about the state of gaming before Valve came along as if they were some sort of savior. It's important to do your research if you want to talk about history and present yourself as an authority.

>Does he deserve it?
Yes. He created a platform to resolve a maladie he diagnosed first during a time the industry at large ignored PC gaming, has remained in private control of it instead of going public and has reaped the benefits.
You're in no place to question his greatness and fruits of his labor. A society must strive to create individual excellence, not collective mediocrity, or elitist rot. Merit above all.

The best anyone can do at sea, including deep research is 7 months until food runs out and filter water becomes a health hazard. Not including theoretical scenarios like earthquakes, hurricanes, thunderstorms and human mental impact. Just people on sea with enough food, solar energy and best water cycling for all team members.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0308597X23002786

So unless you’re claiming they won’t find anything. Won’t publish anything and lose time on a dead area they been researching. There’s absolutely no reason not to publish their failure story so future generations don’t waste time. Just like future medical professionals don’t waste time on blood sucking bugs because past doctors didn’t do a good job at it.

a) my claim isnt that they're "dead" in the 00s, its that it would have declined massively in relevance in the 10s because of the trend of the online store and how predatory they tended to be especially at the time. it would still existm but as i said, it would be a very niche market, and very different from what the PC landscape is now.
b,) sure, if you compared the 00s to the 90s, but again, the rise of digital is inevitable and i'd argue with how much fearmongering there was in the publishing space, they would have pivoted harder to those online drm solutions and focused more on consoles as opposed to the approach they have now. what im arguing isn't the total death of PC, but how it would have been treated by the publishers, ie, it wouldn't be a major platform for their flagship games and be sidelined in favour of consoles.
c.) that comes with more people buying pcs, yes, but that growth would have been less explosive than what we currently have now, and I'd argue it would have been a lot more stunted without major publishers fuelling that growth.
d.) Its 5%, until its not. and publishers would do so regardleas of pushback until it becomes the standard. while i wouldn't go so far as to argue that all PC games would have online DRM (which is unrealistic), a vast majority of the big ones would have under their publisher's online stores. again, loom at the streamer wars as an example of how anal that would be.
e.) is it something Valve invented? no, of course not. nobody serious is arguing that. but those solutions would look less like steam and gog and more windows live and ea origin aka cancer
f.) i wasn't arguing they wouldn't exist, i said that PC would have been far more indie and far smaller than what it is currently, i'd probably rven go further and say it would have been a far more fragmented landscape than what it is currently.
