The Core Tomb Raider series. They skirt the line on horror, even if it's not explicit. The isolation and atmosphere in those games puts you on edge, especially in Last Revelation. I had to level skip when I first played them as a kid because some of the levels terrified me more than any horror game I've ever played.

i'd also encourage people to check on the old army men games' game over scenes because it's clear that the developers wanted to have them be as gruesome as possible

i never see them being mentioned in any of these threads so i want to contribute

There's a cave in Odyssey's Seaside Kingdom that you go into without Cappy. I decided to dive right down from the entrance and like three Maw-Rays popped out.
But "diving into a dark enclosed underwater area and suddenly being accosted by eel-like creatures" is a very specific scenario that terrifies me, so ymmv.

Both segments are fucked. Terrifying shit.
The way they sandwich the comedy/goofy part between the two sections of actual horror is so well played too. That I think it what makes it so much worse the second time. I fucking hated doing the graveyard as a kid, and then I assumed things were back to good old whimsical for a while until it drops me back into the uncomfortable horror element I really didn't want to ever see again. Kino.

When I first played Sunshine and got to this level, my TV and/or its settings were fucked to the point where this cave was basically completely dark, save for those four yellow lights at the bottom. Not understanding where the eel was, I slowly descended to the sound of boss music and those loud underwater noises. Then it started doing that spin it does, which to me looked like dust emerging from what seemed like an infinite black abyss. Then it went into the active phase, which looked like that infinite abyss fucking lunging at me. The boss finally became legible on my TV as I continued to descend into its mouth, which resulted in the boss eating me. Despite the fact that Mario just gets spit out and I still had air left, I promptly sprinted at the TV and shut my Gamecube off. I did not touch Mario Sunshine again for several months.
Anyways, the reason I wrote this blogpost is because I wanted to say I'm very thankful to not be a vorefag.

This is more of a personal anecdote than something actually scary, but I remember one time I was playing Paper Mario TTYD and I was at the part in Glitz Pit where it suddenly turns into a murder mystery and this song starts playing https://youtu.be/YQdDd9R4mwM and you keep getting all these different clues from a “Mr. X” and all this other weird shit. There’s also this Shy Guy who tells you a bunch of different rumors and urban legends surrounding Glitz Pit (which later pay off into the story, like when he talks about a mysterious bathroom that eats people, which later turns out to be a secret pipe you can escape out of) and while I was reading through his stories I just felt this increasing sense of unease. Doubly so because at the time I distinctly remember I was playing the game in my mom’s room and everyone else in the house was currently hanging out in the living room at the other side of the house, so I was basically alone listening to all these stories about disappearing fighters and man eating bathrooms. Eventually I freaked the fuck out and just dropped the controller and sprinted to the other side of the house.

They're these fucking zombie guys that wail like crazy if they see you. They aren't that tough but they can breathe fire which you can't block with your sword. They're also the first supernatural thing you fight in the game (not counting onikage) which had been pretty normal up until that point

I appreciate odyssey giving us "realistic" eels again, but the eels have been around

The Abyss / Deep Crevasse sections in Endless Ocean 1 and 2. Third person scuba diving games on the wii rated PEGI 3 and 7 respectively. You enter the area through a big crevasse on the sea floor and then you're in a pitch black trench that goes down hundreds of metres, only with your diving light and because visibility is only around 20ft, so many things can just slowly come into view and scare the fuck out of you. or jumpscare you by being behind you. Sperm whales, giant squid, giant siphonophores, goblin sharks, etc. Oh yeah and in the second game, some sharks can actually aggro and you get a "danger" alarm that gets louder as a shark gets closer. There's only one shark that can aggro in that part of the second game but still. Other creepy shit like whale skeletons at the bottom and oh yeah creepy ass cello music plays while you're down there. 9 year old me had to drop the game and come back 2 years later after i got my first pube.

Oh yeah and in the second game specifically, during the story you have to slowly creep along the floor of the trench towards a cave at the far side and as you approach you slowly see two massive tentacles are sticking out of the cave. Giant squid in the cave.

Can't recall any giant squids though
>>
>>744241135

>>
>>744254669
Dude you HAVE to play the second one, i'd say it's easily in my top 5 favourite games of all time. you get to dive in so many different locations all over the world, there's way more elements to the gameplay (salvaging is back and better, improved dolphin training, an uncountable amount of side quests and parallel story lines.) the main story is also kinda peak. it's definitely a bit bigger in scale than the first one and has a slightly different vibe but i think its better than the first one. they also do away with the gay (realistic) dive area mechanic so when you dive in a certain map, you can dive there for as long as you have o2. if you no longer have a wii, i'd highly recommend getting a mayflash bar and playing it on dolphin with a wiimote.

You can spend north of 80-100 hours in it and still not 100% it. Honestly it's the series perfected and, in my opinion, the wii's biggest hidden gem.

rugrats: search for reptar the level is called ice cream mountain. You play putput golf through 5 stages or so.
one of the stages you play around a pyramid that you never need to go near, never the less you can go inside it if you want to explore.
the music stops as you enter tight corridors and short claustrophobic maze-like hallways. somewhere in there is a mummy and you can hear the metal screeching sound it makes long before it even finds you. it's just really weird.
