It used to be that they had to be economical about the lines they recorded. You couldn't keep everything loaded in RAM all at once, if you needed eleven minutes of dialogue and five different music tracks all queued up on top of that. That's why they did almost everything important to the story through FMV cutscenes. but now, there's nothing stopping a new Gex game from being more deliberately designed. Nothing but the budget is stopping you from having a unique quip for dynamic events that happen every level. There's nothing stopping them from making a modern 2D platformer with the core mechanics of the first game that looks and feels like the FlippinDingDong cartoon that spurred the renewal of interest in Gex in the first place.

The real DNA was Dana Gould, his standup + Gex's references were the real glue holding it together. You can do more Gex games, but if Dana wasn't able to come back for more of them, that was pretty much it unless they wanted to find another comedian to do Gex. Keep in mind that TV was the king back then and internet was still very, very minuscule.

Gex 1 was probably the best thing released for the 3DO, Gex 2 is a perfectly good 3D platformer, and both it and Gex 3 are meaningfully different in gameplay feel from any contemporary or current 3D platformers. They're all worth playing, but I have to say Gex 1 is my favorite of the three, it feels most true to the intended vision of the brand, and the 3D games feel like a compromise made to suit the platforms they were published on.
