Far from the only Quantic Dream one, but one they dusted off a few years later and made into a game

The tech demo they did for the PS4 launch was weird as hell.

That was totally pre-rendered wasn't it

Consider everything presented for a game pre-rendered & bullshotted until the controller is in your hands.

>Guerilla make a target render CG video for internal use at Sony, as their goal for Killzone 2 on their newly received PS3 devkits, and begin development on the game
>immediately see Sony presenting said target render at E3 being touted as REAL TIME ACTUAL LITERAL GAMEPLAY RUNNING RIGHT NOW FOR REAL when they'd only just gotten devkits
They were less than pleased.

>flat screen, not a 3d hologram or whatever, meaning that if the kid's eyes on the tv are looking to the side it'll be the same render no matter from which angle you're looking or where you sit in the room.
>we're supposed to believe that the bitch to the right side's making eye contact with the kid

Insulting, yet a million of mongoloids on the internet got fooled.

Do people really think it's a good idea to bring back a simulacrum of a lost loved one? I just can't understand that. It's the worst possible thing you can do instead of accepting it and moving on.

>>744229562
It's funny how this tech was showcased like it'd be the new next thing in gaming. Then 9 times out of 10 they would end up being used in a few games and never used again. Graphics just keep becoming more demanding while not really being worth the cost.

Usually they're just to demonstrate some system capabilities, like rendering a lot on screen at once
>>

>>744230153
I mean its "in game" cause the demos whole point was that it was a real in game scene playing out and you could switch to different camera angles of this cutscene in real time.
Plus in terms of graphic capabilities this tech demo isnt that far from something like what Hyrule Warriors ended up being graphics wise. The WiiU was weak of course compared to its competition but PS3-tier graphics were achievable on the system so its not like the demo was misleading.
The real misleading thing about the demo was expecting the Nintendo of that era to ever care about pushing graphics for their games.
>>
>>744238734
>PS3-tier graphics were achievable on the system
Beyond PS3 graphics. It was the CPU that was criminally weak, plus the lack of usable internal storage meaning games had to run from RAM and the slow not-BR drive, limiting streaming assets. But the actual GPU was more powerful than you'd expect. I'm guessing Nintendo thought "2 screens = double power" and were just happy getting any games at all so didn't care that people were putting 2D HUDs on the gamepad and using the whole GPU for the main screen.
>>
>>744237901
Pretty much. They aren't really speaking to the gamers, they are advertising to the developers. "Hey remember how it was a nightmare animating more than 3 or 4 characters at once on the N64? Well here's 128 fully animating, running basic AI and colliding with each other and the world." No one was really going to make a 128 characters on screen game, it was just a flex to show how much headroom you had.

There will never be a smash bros where ganondorf fights with a sword.
>>
>>744230153
Nope, it has several normal rendering artifacts and aliasing and such.
It's literally just good art.

>>
>>744230153
I still can't believe there were people tricked by it. As soon as I saw it I instantly recognized that Blur-esque refined CGI look that bullshot trailers have; it was Killzone 2 levels of blatant and for similar hardware 6 years later at that, of course it was prerendered.

Anyone ever play the Nvidia tech demos?
This alien one had the flesh deformation with layers i always wanted in games, and it showed me that it actually was possible. Then dead island 2 actually pulled it off in a game.
I want it in every game.
>>
>>744231304
If nothing else the reaction to that reveal probably whipped Guerilla into making Killzone 3 look as good as it does. It comes really, really close to the 2 trailer. Sony's whole gameplan of making the system intentionally obtuse to artificially inflate the console lifespan and ensure early games looked worse than later gen releases was stupid but it went largely according to plan. Ironic that one of their worst long-term ideas is also one of the few they actually followed through on.

Sony made their devs look like total fools on the regular back then, like E3 2006 where they had the Warhawk devs do a live demo of the Sixaxis controller, even though they'd only received the devkits for it literally days before the show.

Just look at the picture, like pay attention to it now, in 2026.
You will see an unholy amount of aliasing, low polygons and tricks.
The whole trick here is that they dedicated a lot of time (and probably RAM) making this super well done scene.
You won't find games this detailed on the WiiU because it would take a humongous time to make a whole game with this level of details, and probably would have an retarded number of long loading screens.
>>
>>744242970
You do know that people were able to move around in the scene right? They couldn't play it but they were able to explore the demo.

Watched this with friends in high school when it came out. This shit was mind blowing. Unfortunately, they had to ditch the soft shadow effects because the consoles couldn't handle it. That was disappointing.

anyone remember that PC demo in the 2000's where an anime girl walked back and forth with a cloth physics shirt that you could pull off, leaving her topless?

When you can dedicate all of the disc space and system resources to rendering a single dinosaur, you can make it look really good even if it's on the PS1. When you actually have to put them in a game where way more stuff is happening in parallel, you have to sacrifice resources.

Pikmin?
>>
>>744252041
All the memory in the demo is dedicated to this one thing (making the t-rex), in a full game it has to be spread out across everything else (environments, characters, items, etc.), that's my guess.

Cute way to walk through the system capabilities.

I recall they did something similar with that Motorstorm game at E3 2005. Sony claimed it was in-game footage or something, but the game was still in the concept phase at the time I believe. Picture related.
