Why do so many characters in Persona 4 act like Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit hole completely cut off from the rest of civilization? Like 20% of the NPC dialogue is just people going>Man Inaba sucks and is soooo boring compared to da big city The events of the story literally happen because Adachi got mindbroken by having to work there and decided to just start killing people once he got magic TV powers.
Because they're retarded teenagers? What a stupid thread.
>>744232179>Adachi is a teenager
>>744232307He's the dark parallel to the teenage protag, basically a retarded manchild yeah.
>>744232307Adachi is what the average persona player thinks he is
Literally me
>>744232110japs can't write.
>>744232110SOUL
>>744232110>Why do so many characters in Persona 4 act like Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit hole completely cut off from the rest of civilization?Because it sort of is. Most stores there are local mom and pops. Everyone there is part of a tight-knit community and big chains have only just started to move into the area, that's why Yosuke feels guilt for Saki's family outcasting her for working at Junes. Plus, the school you go to is visibly old as fuck and hasn't been renovated for a long time. Compare Gekkoukan/Shujin to Yasogami, the former are modern, clean, and lively in the middle of a hustling and bustling urban neighborhood while the latter is in the middle of some fields and has worn-down walls and decaying architecture. For as upbeat and lively as Persona 4 is, Inaba is depressing. I guess it makes sense since the game is about making the best out of a bad situation after all.
>>744233846Inaba is just the most relatable setting to anyone growing up in any type of suburb (me)
>>744232110suburban hellscape (japan) is still a suburban hellscape
>>744233996Urban is worse. idk how japs can live in tokyo and not feel like a prisoner
>>744234246YOU ARE PRISONERWANT EMANCIPATION?
>>744234246because most of that place looks like this at street level
>>744234475I'm not seeing the counterargument.
>>744233846>Inaba is depressing.Inaba is comfy.I'd love to grow up in a town like Inaba. It's just not the same if you move there as an already grown adult.
>>744233846I don't find Inaba depressing. I can see that perspective if one only looks at it as urban decay when compared to a megalopolis like Tokyo, but it's nice & comfy throwback to 20th century semi-rural living.
>>744232110city slickers dont understand anything apart from getting their car broken into and not being able to find parking sports
>>744232110Tokyo in its totality has 33 million people. Osaka around 20 million. Inaba is a small feudal Sengoku era shithole compared to the metropolises you can reach by train in like an hour or two.
Grass is always greener mentality.Rural kids are usually romanticize how much cooler the big city is since there's a lot more activity going on there.City kids are usually romanticizing the less claustrophobic rural areas where they can have some peace of mind.Only people that have lived in both areas for a considerable amount of time tend to be the ones that don't complain too much about where they're currently living.
>>744234525compare that to this
>>744233846iirc p4 was originally going to also be more in line with p3 when it was first being drafted as time went on, the tone changed to be more positive and upbeat, largely in part due to chiebut you can still see some glimmers of the first draft in there, inaba being a run down old town, the all encompassing fog, and the murders that were originally supposed to have been done by a party member
>>744233846It’s not, I’ve lived thereThe entirety of Japan can be traversed cheaply by domestic flights or ShinkansenEach major city and prefecture is so vastly different in terms of culture, dialect, climate, cost of living, etc that even country/rural towns have their worthIt’s not as isolationist as American country towns because in America, getting out of bumfuck Idaho can be a legitimate challenge due to how large the country is and how shit public transit and general non-car infrastructure isIt’s much easier to feel and get trapped
>>744234901That looks comfy thoYou think it's better to be surrounded by towers of concrete, billboards and wires 24/7?
>>744234960social conditioning is a hell of a thing
>>744234475>Urbanites unironically believe living in a alleyway surrounded by concrete jungle is "comfy"
>>744234960You can't go to a konbini for a snack and cigarettes at 3am on a suburb so yes it's better.
>>744234246genuinely nightmarish
>>744235206>suburbanites unironically believe driving 20 miles to the nearest store only to get shot and murdered by a dindu is "comfy"
>>744234960Motherfucker when was the last time youve been to a suburb? The distance between a typical suburb and actual civilization where you can actually do shit is full of fucking wasteland.
>>744235216>No what about my heckin goyslop
>>744232110because it's a rundown dump you feel different because it's exotic for you you are a virtual tourist
>>744235274>driving 20 miles to the nearest storeIt always funny that cityfags act like driving ten minutes to buy groceries is some sort of Herculean task.>get shot and murdered by a dinduImagine unironically trying to claim that suburbs have higher murder rates than cities
>>744235314>actual civilization where you can actually do shitThere are plenty of things to do outside of cities.
>>744235725>Doesn't even shop out the Grok logo
>>744233996>nooo it's too safe and quiet here, this is HELL!!!!
>>744235274>only to get shot and murderedAh yes, because cities are so well known for not having any crime?
>>744232110>Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit holeIt's not considered a shit-hole, just a boring countryside place. You have no idea how much the Japanese, especially young people, idolize Tokyo
>>744235314Uh, what? Suburbs are pretty close to the city. It’s not rural.
>>744236056>You have no idea how much the Japanese, especially young people, idolize Tokyotbf Americans do the same shit with places like New York and Los Angeles.I'm guessing that Euros are less likely to have that kind of thinking, but I have no source on that, just feels like they wouldn't give to much of a shit about their big cities.
>>744235725having that much space would be amazing as a kid, since theres nothing useful there zero cars will be parking or driving past so you and the neighbour kids could fuck around all day
>>744232110i feel like people today can't even comprehend what it was like to live in a small town pre-social media/streaming services and how mind numbingly boring it was.personally i can relate to it growing up in a small town in a flyover state with a population of 20k back when most people didn't even see the point in having internet. you can drive an hour to the big city, or you can do a whole lot of nothing but watch basic cable for fun.
>>744234475Fuck, how am I supposed to get a 20' long Caddy through that?
>>744234960It's not. The only thing suburbs have over urban areas is that you're away from niggers. That's it. That's the entire reason suburbs are a thing. Otherwise it's the worst part of city and country living with the benefits of neither.
Houston here, I live literally 50 minutes away from where any of my dates live. I would kill for a subway or a more compact city.
>>744237948It's hell to live in anywhere but a big capital city now, because there's a massive brain, wealth, and beauty drain to places like LA/NYC/Vancouver etc. Try dating in fucking Tulsa where everyone is a loser alcoholic. I'm not sure what dating in the big cities is like, but it blows REALLY badly in even medium sized cities. You're basically gambling for the one hottie who made the mistake of not leaving because their mom is sick or something. Then there's the utter lack of good job prospects..
>>744232110A lot of nips are cityfags
i took a picture of this cat in a random city shrine of Osaka while I was on a date with a woman who spoke zero english. It was actually quite a great time, she took me to a dragon quest Lawson and bought me some stuff.
>>744232110I don't know why do people in smaller towns that only have a walmart complain so much about living in those? fuckin retard.
>>744238506>agenderI would think these kind of people would prefer being isolated but maybe they prefer the noise of crowds or he is a pajeet.
>>744237948grew up in a town of 5k pre internet, young people now really don't understand what that kind of life was like>>744238282>I live literally 50 minutes away from where any of my dates liveit really do be like that. drive and hour, still in houstonbeen living here for 20 years, still hate it
living in small city, japan means you can't drink out with your buddy as who the fuck is going to drive you home as no train, no taxi, no uber.
>>744238702>I would think these kind of people would prefer being isolatedIt's the fact that these people can't stand to be alone with their own thoughts. Introspection causes them genuine mental distress.

>>744232110150 million japanese live in an island smaller than California, they have no idea what "country" is, of course these soulless hive insects think a suburb with a population density less than 600,000 people per km^2 is a backwater
>>744234915>the murders that were originally supposed to have been done by a party memberNo, they weren't. There is zero basis for this anywhere, and people are still talking about it.
>>744235314Nigga what do you need to do every day where you have to be in the city? I can almost guarantee you got nothing going and at most just go to work/get groceries.
>>744238937That's what concerns me about the kids. My 10 year old nephew watches trash youtube that has zero downtime, meaning, or silence; pure chaotic noise. They seem afraid to not have their thoughts curated by something or someone else.
>>744239165bullshit, there is tons of rural Japan where you just never see anyone else. Hell there are whole dead cities where everyone has just left to live in Tokyo where you can buy a home for like $100

>>744235206looks comfy if it's a safe area, if that were in america yeah it'd be shit
>>744234901It's the complete lack of vegetation (aside from the sterile, cut grass) that makes it soulless. A proper suburb looks like this
>>744239190wasn't it said in the artbook, along with dojima being the killer at one point?afaik it only never said who it would've been, leading people to assume yukiko because she's the most sketchy of the party

>>744235314what defines a "big distance" and "actual civilization" to you?I live about 10 miles away from Legoland - Legoland itself is in a very wide suburban sprawling town with a population of about 120,000 people, which is attached to about a half-dozen other sprawling suburban towns with a population ranging from 40-150,000 into adjacent conurbations, about 30-40 miles north of San Diego>>744239346that's Los Angeles btw
>>744236807>can skate or bike all day>can blast music / play instruments loudly and neighbors won't complainunironically yeah it would be awesome and where i lived as a kid was kinda like that
>>744239346Not to mention how fucking uncomfortable it'll be with the sun burning you up, with no tree shades for cooling down the area.It looks plainly depressing.
>>744237948This guy knows. Also, if you aren't interested in discussing the most popular sports, gossiping about other villager's boring lives, or smoke weed & drink alcohol, you are completely out of luck.
>>744232110For a city dweller there is nothing more horrible then living in a small community where you know everyone. Nothing more terrible then living in a place without a series of corporate chain stores on every corner. The idea of not being surrounded by constant noise, smell, and niggerbeasts is horrific to them, and this reflects in their media. It would be a mercy to burn these concrete tombs. The creatures within are clearly being tortured.Worse still, they have begun to view the torture as normal.
>>744239353>wasn't it said in the artbook, along with dojima being the killer at one point? No, the comment said>"He looks like he just got out of jail himself, not like he puts others in it!"on one of his early designs, with the bald hair. I'll see if I can find it now online.
>>744239557>>744239353yeah here it is, even translating the text you can get the jist.
Sometimes city living isn't so bad. This is on a 22 mile bike path just five minutes from my apartment, and there are never any other people on the path.
>>744232110>Why do so many characters in Persona 4 act like Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit holeBecause by Japanese teenager standards, it kind of is. There is nothing for young people to do there aside from taking over their parents' farm or some mom and pop store. There are no people (well, except the brotag) coming in, only those leaving and dying of old age. Everything is kinda run down and old. Basically, there is nothing for them to get excited about in their future if they stay there, so obviously they aren't enjoying it very much.
>>744239359well time to take him for coffee and start talking about books with him as the cool uncle/aunt

>>744240236>grocery store is 5 minutes away driving>grocery store is also 5 minutes away walking because there are multiple grocery storeseurangutans will never understand this
I mean the town is based on Fuefuki japan. Looking at street view, the issue I see is that you have the cramped zoning and housing density reminicent of tokyo. but with a fraction of the people. Why would you want to live like that while not getting the benefits of living in the capital city
>>744232307Adachi is a manchild who never stopped being 15
>>744240741Damn, he really is literally me.
>>744234246>>744234475Lack of negroes, latinos or arabs can make even big dense cities suprizingly livable

>>7442414310.1% of the pop (most of them being tourists) isn't the same as actually having a sizable amount of negroes in your countrySure 0% is better, but still....
>>744232110come to think of it, I grew up in a town much smaller than this and I don't think a single kid said this shit growing up.

>>744232110>a town where nothing happenswhere have i heard this before?

>>744239808>There is nothing for young people to doWhat do normal non-autostic young people even do?When I was young I just played vidya all day.
Because it is? Inaba would be considered a small town in Japan.
>>744241893I never understood this "there's nothing to do" aspect of small-town living. Hang out with your friends, go to a party, bike around, play some video games, go see a movie, eat at a restaurant, play some sports, get drunk, go for a swim at the local river/pond/beach, flirt with the local women, go for a hike, play a board game, shitpost online, do some skateboarding and the list goes on.Like what exactly is it big cities offer in terms of activities that are so essential that it makes town life boring?I grew up in a village with 5000 people, 30% were old as fuck, and I wasn't bored a day in my life.
>>744243531what they mean is>can't visit niggertoriums full of foreign peepee poopoo cuisine and trinkets
>>744243531young people like clubbing and eating at expensive restaurants where they can take pictures for social media
>>744243591Yeah but even then that's something you do once, right? For a few hours tops?A friend of mine lives in a big city and he always brags about how they have aquariums and shit, and the other day I challenged him and asked how often he visits this precious aquarium he brings up. And what'd he answer? He hadn't been there in 4 years. This is it? This 3-hour once-every-quarter-decade activity is what makes city life not boring?
>>744243689Throw a party at home or rent a dirt-cheap public location for a party and make, and learn to make good food with friends. This isn't hard, costs less and matters more.
>>744232179This. I grew up in a major global metropolitan city overseas in highschool and me and my friends sat around complaining about how it sucked and was boring and there was nothing to do and talking about how much cooler things were back home despite them objectively not being that good.
>>744232559This honestly90% of Japanese fiction is the same unoriginal shit and mostly cringe
>>744243871can you really not see the appeal of just getting dressed and going out somewhere to drink and dance vs setting up and throwing an entire fucking party? like i agree city life isn't anything special but its pretty obvious to me what appeals to young people about it. its where all the "fun" stuff is, all the cool eateries and clubs they see on social media.
>>744243993No? Why would I stand on line and overpay for a loud shit location filled with people that want nothing to do with me where I get to listen to radio-tier music and drink for watered out drinks?>inb4 get laidTinder exists.
>>744235083You're posting facebook cherrypicked images, that's where you're atYour walkable cities are all prisons in which people literally live wall to wall with each other in small apartment units because that's the only alternative to detached housing. Not only is it uncomfortable but it's also incredibly anti-natalist, imagine raising a kid on the 10th floor of an apartment block and everyone else putting up with it. Meanwhile the elites who force this way of living on to you are still living in detached mansions, they literally see you as bugs. Stop trying to force your pathetic cheap euro way of living on us already you stupid limp dick faggot. Just admit you're poor instead of trying to justify it with "everyone should ditch le cars, fuck personal transport and freedom, just use le bike!". The only one who has been conditioned is you.
>>744244340>Your walkable cities are all prisonsLmao founs the Mutt
>>744244381>he says, dying from heat stroke because air conditioning is haram
>>744244432I have centralized cooling. What's an air condition?Shouldn't you be getting shot in the street? Or is that why you're so afraid to walk in your cities? Lmao.
>>744238845So walk? If it's small enough, you don't need your hecking uber.
>>744244507>Or is that why you're so afraid to walk in your cities? Lmao.pretty muchnot that he'll admit it, what with his paper thin ego"walkable cities" only work in first world high trust societies
>>744232110People tend to believe the grass is always greener, I grew up in a clean and safe suburb but I found it boring. I thought moving to NYC would be fun, in reality its just as boring and now I have to worry about getting mugged sometimes. I can go clubbing sure but it's very vapid and empty. At times living in a big city can be even more isolating then living in the middle of nowhere. I've made a lot of friends here but after 10 years I think I am going to leave soon, what urbanites told me was such a culturally "rich" place kinda isn't, it's very segregated. I end up in queens a lot and its "Diverse" yet completely isolated from one another. The foods nice I guess and the rent is NOT nice. Not to mention how dirty it can get and it rarely ever feels quiet.
>>744243531anon, what you're not considering is the phrase "Familiarity breeds contempt" it's not that there is literally nothing to do. It's just that in a small town, you've already done it. I live in a town of about 30k, but i lived in a village of about 1k. After you got done going to the store to get snacks/drinks as a kid, you could go to the same two playgrounds, ride bikes in the same streets/trails, fuck with the same people, go to the same event places (bars, resturaunts, etc)Once you've done the same thing, over and over, it's not invigorating, it's tiresome. Ennui is a real thing and you need new in your life eventually.
>>744240369>drivingWhat if you're too young/old/drunk/cripped etc to drive?
>>744234525You cannot see an endless landscape of buildings from street level.
>>744245163>youngdoesn't stop a dodge ram driver>olddoesn't stop a dodge ram driver>drunkdoesn't stop a dodge ram driver>crippleddoesn't stop a dodge ram driverI think a dodge ram is just the ultimate tool for people living in the suburbs.

you're all retarded. cities suck. suburbs suck. living in the middle of nowhere sucks. pretty much everything that isn't me sucks. you're all being pretty arbitrary given those facts.
>>744245737anon, doing the same thing you did yesterday, the day before, the day before, the day before ad infinitum, and indentifying it as not fun anymore isn't depression, it's accurately describing boredom. I don't wanna live in some trashpile like NY. I'm fine in my semi rural near a 30k town. But i grew up knowing what it feels like to be able to say "this place is the sticks" and it wasn't just hyperbole.cunt.
>>744245857Even trailer trash will get fed up and bored being in a trailer park. That is why they always drink until they are shit faced and doing drugs all the time when they don't find something to do with enthusiasm.
>>744245902t. adachi
>>744241893>>744243531Aside from the shit that other anons already brought (like most residents being extremely familiar with and, thus, bored of everything their town has to offer), it's also about having some at least barely exciting vision for the future. When you were a highschooler, would you be thrilled if your only prospect after graduation would be working in your parents' podunk inn or some tackle shop that averages 1 customer per month? There is a reason Yukiko is unhappy about this enough to have a shadow appear.
>>744244194Most people enjoy that sort of thing. Not me either, but most people seem to. I guess it's something you can do to bond with your friends.
>>744235583>DrivingI understand that to an American this is a given but I can just walk to my store in under 5 minutes, or take my bike if I want to reach one further away. The very fact that you HAVE to get into the rage cage to even be able to shop for groceries should make you realize how fucked it is.
>>744232110>Why do so many characters in Persona 4 act like Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit hole completely cut off from the rest of civilization?Island/small nations have a very skewed perception of distance relative to the size of their country. Inaba is barely an hours drive away from Nagoya or like 2 hours from Osaka. But that drive is crossing 1/15-ish the entirety of their country which feels monumental. If you plopped someone down randomly in the middle of more than half the US and told them to drive straight in any direction that long, they likely wouldn't even leave the state they're in.
>>744244507>Oi it's a school not a shooting range>*Dies of heatstroke*
>>744234953I feel like the real problem with trying to move in the US is the amount of money you have to save to afford an apartment, and the fact that unless you're going to live out of your car, you need to immediately find a place to live when you move there, unless you already know someone there.
>>744232110That's how all Japanese think about dying small ghost towns where all the youth have left.Have you ever been to a small japanese town where majority of the population is elderly and everyone has left, you'd want to neck yourself to. >>744246732Or any "vision for the future" period. Village extinction was in the headlines when Persona 4 was being made.
>>744232110Japan is so small and travel is cheap. Inaba people could easily ride a train to Tokyo or whatever the fuck and enjoy going to the mall or buying plastic shit.
>>744251006But that means they could also easily ride a train to Tokyo and stay there for more gainful employment. That's at the heart of Japan's population dynamics.

>>744251006>Inaba people could easily ride a train to Tokyo or whatever the fuck and enjoy going to the mall or buying plastic shit.I mean there's the city mall that got added in Golden>>744251089That applies to pretty much all small towns in the world
>>744232110>Why aren't Japanese countryside not like American countryside with nothing but a large undeveloped plain field? Are you retarded, do you not know the land mass of Japan?Majority of Japan is developed and wherever you go they always have malls and supermarket near-by, but that still doesn't make them as developed as Tokyo or Osaka.
>>744251217>I mean there's the city mall that got added in GoldenInteresting! I only played the original
>>744251006In American POV that's true, but to anyone that's used to living in small countries 2 hour train ride out of the region is a big hassle.

i quit my job a while ago and now i don't really have the need or desire to go anywhere. i live in the suburbs and my car has just been collecting dust but i still need to pay the registration fee and renew my ID every year, which takes a huge chunk out of my bank account but because i live in suburban sprawl the public transport is abysmal so i'm just losing money every year for no reason because i'm in between a rock and a hard place. not to mention the fact that WFH basically made the suburban-downtown model of city planning redundant overnightsuburbs are such an outdated method of organizing society and are such a drag on all possible aspects of productivity that they can't be abandoned soon enough. they were literally designed for returning soldiers with money and families who wanted to get away from blacks after world war 2, there's no reason why we need to keep building them
>>744251443>he comfily writes from his suburb without any interest or even means to move from thereLmao
Living in Tokyo is really something, I'd get why they feel bummed out living in a place that only has malls at best.>I want to buy electronics, let's go to a city that sells nothing but electronics>I want to buy books, let's go to a town that sells nothing but books>I want to buy clothes, let's go to a district that only sells specific type of clothing.Sure it starts feeling pointless when you actually get used to living there, but there's definitely an appeal.

>>744238616Cute!
>>744253075Living in rural Germany isn't much better. It's fucking depressing. Thing is, it used to be nice when I was a kid. Had the local butcher. Had a two bakers (one with a cafe), a pharmacy, multiple doctors, a store for office supplies, small clothing store, a jeweller, a grocery store, a disco (shitty as it was)...Now all we've left is a super market on the road that leads out of the village and a couple pubs. I need a doctor or the dentist, I have to go to the next town over. Wanna buy anything out of the ordinary, drive to the city 30 minutes away. Wanna go to the gym, same. And it feels like the only people who still live here are the elderly and foreign workers who go home for the winter. Fucking wasteland.
>>744234475comfy.i could pass out drunk in the middle of the alley with my pants off, and still feel safe
>>744241893In Bongland, they just drink, smash things and plaster graffiti everywhere.

>>744239346ThisJust plant some fucking trees and aesthetic value would shoot up immensely
>>744258520At least the scenery is nice ..
is funny because that game was made before japan countryside started to had several ghosts town around the whole country, especially south-west
>>744232110>Why do so many characters in Persona 4 act like Inaba is some sort of bumfuck hillbilly shit hole completely cut off from the rest of civilization?>>744232179Because it is? What are you even doing? You're arguing against what the game DIRECTLY TELLS YOU. Stop. The town has like a thousand people in it. It's in the middle of nowhere. The game tells you it's a bumfuck rural shithole, just accept what the game tells you and move on.
>>744250624Driving an hour to get somewhere is absolutely unreasonable you retard.
>>744259692>ugh I cant get any weed or get fucked by 5000 different guys a week i need to go to tokyo
>>744251443we don't need to keep building them, but they serve a purpose still>to get away from blacks
>>744260940I miss when they used to make games quickly. Persona 3 came out in 2006 and then Persona 4 came out in 2008. Imagine if they kept up that release cadence?Persona 3 - 2006Persona 4 - 2008Persona 5 - 2010Persona 6 - 2012Persona 7 - 2014Persona 8 - 2016Persona 9 - 2018Persona 10 - 2020Persona 11 - 2022Persona 12 - 2024Persona 13 - 2026We could be playing Persona 13 right now guysBut instead of making 9 good persona games they made 1 really shitty one
>>744232429holy shit he's literally me
>>744232110if you've been to Tokyo you'd know it really does have everything by comparison. In the sticks you only have whatever they have at the closest aeon mall. In Tokyo there's enough density and young people to support all kinds of subcultures and businesses and events. The difference is night and day.Imagine living in some shitty town of 60K people like yaso-inaba. There's literally nothing except your school, the local supermarket, and some rice paddies. No wonder the protagonist just spends all day fucking all the different girls at his high school, it's not like there's anything else to do
Go look up Fuefuki (what Inaba is based on) on google maps and see how interesting it is.This is the town. Everything else around it is farmland and neighborhood clusters.
>>744234837>enormous driveways and garages>still parks on the road
>>744244340>Not only is it uncomfortable but it's also incredibly anti-natalistsuburbs are literal prisons for children they can't go anything without their parents driving them
