>Dragon Age fans have been bracing for bad news since Veilguard’s mixed reception, and now one of the people who helped build the franchise is confirming what a lot of people already suspected. Former BioWare executive producer Mark Darrah doesn’t think the series will make a return, pointing to EA’s complicated relationship with shipping games at all’, said in an interview.
>That’s a blunt way to put it, but Darrah has earned the right to be blunt. He spent years at BioWare working on the first two Dragon Age titles before leaving the studio in 2022, giving him a front-row seat to how EA actually operates behind the scenes
>Darrah isn’t a lone voice here. Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider, who spent roughly two decades at BioWare, echoed a similar sentiment. Gaider said it’s “unlikely” fans will ever see another Dragon Age game made by BioWare under EA’s control, and described how, while working at the studio, it always felt like the team was “one breath away from the current project being shelved”.
>If you needed proof that this isn’t just former employees venting, look at what actually happened when BioWare tried to pitch something safe. Darrah revealed that BioWare pitched EA a remaster of the first three Dragon Age games, branded internally as the “Champions Trilogy,” and EA turned it down because the publisher is generally against remasters.
>Gaider suggested that Mass Effect has effectively been EA’s golden child within BioWare, getting more leeway even when it didn’t sell as well.
>That preference shows up in where BioWare’s resources are actually going. With the studio’s remaining staff now focused on pre-production for the next Mass Effect game, there’s simply no team left to work on Dragon Age even if EA wanted one.

I despise everybody involved for fucking up this franchise.
I despise EA for buying Bioware.
I despise Bioware for shitting out Veilguard and killing the franchise.

i dont understand why ea keeps giving them money. mass effect, dragon age, and anthem are all dead. they're not even allowed to touch star wars anymore, tor was taken away from them so they "can focus on mass effect and dragon age" which is so fucking funny you'd think microsoft owned them.

If the next Mass Effect is Veilguard tier, I'm fairly certain Bioware will shut down. Games today have budgets that are so big that a single failure can ruin the IP forever, Bioware still being alive after Veilguard is crazy in and of itself.

Not really. It was a single good game, and the last game made before the old Bioware leads left the company. The DLC was bad 2 was bad, and from then on it was clear that the company was dead and future projects were safe to write-off as not worth playing. I don't consider DA's after Origin to even be the same series.

honestly even DA:O is kind of ass. The combat isn't very interesting, and neither is class customization and itemization. It's carried almost entirely by the writing, which is very solid though I do wish the dwarf questline had a little more maneuverability in playing the game of dwarven politics because needing to do shit for either candidate before even getting to meet with them and discuss their policy kind of sucks.

I dunno I quite liked it, I think the church ruling over and oppressing the mages is a neat twist on a fantasy setting where more often than not wizards are extremely powerful people in both arcane prowess and political power. I do think Logain's plot was kind of bad and nonsensical though, but at least the game does understand this slightly by having the civil war take place.

>>744242804
Everyone involved in feminizing the franchise is to blame.

Unless someone has the balls to just come out, name the problem (feminization), and name the problem-causers, I'm going to assume that the destruction of Bioware's reputation was a collaborative effort and that the entirety of the leadership needs to not work in this industry anymore.

I honestly realized some time ago that all I really cared about was Dragon Age Origins. That's it. Everything else was a complete mess or just aggressively mediocre.

>Dragon Age 2 was incredibly unfinished, rushed, ugly as sin, and watered down the actual RPG side of things, specifically dialogue, in such a way it was absurd
>Dragon Age Inquisition was incredibly poorly written at times, had bland/obnoxious characters, continued the simplistic choice/dialogue of DA2, and then introduced empty open world gameplay where you go from place to place marking off spots on the map
>Dragon Age Veilguard was a disaster in almost every way, with some of the most boring gameplay I've ever experienced, truly abysmal characters/writing/dialogue, basically zero player input on events happening, asinine choices for the overall world/reasoning behind key events in the series, boring environments despite taking from the best of the best lore-wise, and really awful pandering throughout the game that would annoy even the most liberal-minded person

There are parts of the other games you can argue were somewhat decent, like the Friend/Rival system of DA2, the DLC of Inquisition, things like that. But honestly? There's a single good game to the entire series. It's wild how long its been kept going and milked when it had one good entry that, arguably, isn't even the best in its genre.

I mean this genuinely: if you want Bioware-esque games, Larian now fills that space. Same fantasy genre, same immense focus on romance, same general depth in systems/dialogue, same corny/messy writing, same unfinished content you find out about a month after release, hell, they literally took Bioware's old franchise and made a sequel that won GOTY from it.

Basically every positive and negative you could point towards with old Bioware is something you can find in current Larian.

Why expose yourself to something like Veilguard if you hated the prior two games? And more importantly: why support this studio with money?
>>
>>744245861
As depressing as it sounds its more or less true.
>>
>>744245798
Maybe, but they've been struggling to figure out an identity for the series since Origins. They tried DA2's more simplistic style and that fumbled, they tried expanding everything into a modern pseudo-open world with Inquisition which saw some success (but was still heavily criticized), and then they said screw it, let's just make a casual action-RPG and double down on pandering/romance slop with Veilguard.

I don't know if it would've mattered much if Veilguard came out 2 years after Inquisition or 10 years. The love for DA still exists, hence why we're even having this thread. But the devs can't seem to figure out that they basically just had to make DA:O, but again.
>>
>>744243550

>>
>>744245950
>and then they said screw it, let's just make a casual action-RPG and double down on pandering/romance slop with Veilguard.
What they released was the 4 version after multiple hard resets.
>>
>>744245923
Exactly. Everything I hear people complain about regarding Larian's games is the same shit I heard back when DA:O came out.

>The writing is too goofy at times!
>They focus too much on romance!
>This last bit of the game kind of sucks and feels unfinished!
>These characters feel like they're just pandering to this specific group!

It's the same. The good, the bad, all of it. If anything, at least Larian gives a bit more depth with how you interact with the world and making unique character builds. Old Bioware games never let you chuck a party member off a cliff second one, or change each character's class from start to finish with whatever wild/dumb build you want.
>>
>>744246034
That kind of just lends more credence to my point: they can't figure out what the hell they want to make. Despite the fact that they could essentially re-skin DA:O's gameplay/environments, make a fresh party, say, "Oh no! Another Blight is happening! Go find allies to fight the Archdemon!", and bam, a million copies sold. Instead they tried pseudo-action gameplay, open worlds, all kinds of nonsense.
>>
>>744242804
Mass Effect, truly the golden child, which is why they whored it out to a new scab studio after 3 and then immediately shelved it for a decade and scuttled the studio.

Bioware needs to face facts. They're run like dogshit, everyone knows about "Bioware magic", they make constant bad calls, and their work is just bad.
I don't know why EA hasn't just dissolved them and try to rebuild from the ground up after Baldur's Gate 3 came along and ate their lunch showing that Bioware's work is getting literally 1% of its potential sales.
>>
>>744246242
I'm not absolving Bioware devs of their role in their own downfall, but EA buying them was the exact moment they went to shit, and I don't see any sign that modern EA is any more cut out to improve a studio than back when they were industry's greatest parasite.
>>

On the one hand, sucks that your series got invaded by faggots who poisoned it from the inside. But on the other hand, execs are unoriginal hacks who'll sit on properties for a couple decades then roll them back out with a new coat of paint.

10, maybe 15 years from now, they'll probably remake the original Dragon Age, just to test the waters for if a sequel would work. Provided you're not dead or over gaming by then, that's your last chance I wager. Of course, even if they do decide to do something with the series, they could just circle back to make it a live service or whatever other trendy crap is big 5-10 years from now.

Things look grim, but with enough copium, you can find a silver lining.

>Or drop the grim setting in favor of sparkledog wholesome gay D&D
The most baffling thing about that was how the Bioware writers talked about it like dropping dark fantasy would reach a "wider audience", while looking at the fantasy landscape right now, dark fantasy IS the mainstream fantasy with the widest appeal. Warhammer, A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones and other dark and gritty stories dominate the genre. Hell, even the most popular women's romantasy fantasy books are all about toxic romances and various degrees of rape kinks. The wholesome safe fantasy is ironically the marginal niche.

Veilguard would have been an order of magnitude worse if EA hadn’t interfered.
The rescue team they brought in were the ones that made the gameplay tolerable and, from the passive aggressive remarks from the original team, clearly despised the plot and tried to tone it down.

EA’s fault is giving the original team enough rope to hang themselves and not coming in with jackboots earlier.

I just don't understand that if your series and studio is under threat of you going under and having your ENTIRE staff lose their jobs - why not do the obvious thing and sell a good game?

Unsafe edgy is a risk. You can do it well and reap a lot of benefits from that but if you do it poorly you'll have wished you went for something less polarizing

Every time someone says that Dragon Age 2 was "decent" I remember how that game degraded side quests into a "I found someone's pants in a dungeon, I must bring them back to their owner for a reward".
A design so ingenious, they even applied it to Mass Effect 3. Now you was able to find someone's space pants on some other planet and retuen them to their owner on the Citadel.

Origins is apparently the only passable DA game but I dropped it as a middle schooler because the writing embarrassed me
Veilguard was shockingly atrocious and the studio has refused to acknowledge or address that reality so it falls to EA to make things right, but in classic EA fashion the solution is to sit back, vault another ip, and continue paying worthless devs. Veilguard was truly so bad that the only answer in my opinion is to gut the studio or close it, anyone with a positive opinion of that trash is only capable of producing more trash

Something game companies r gonna realize soon is the star wars problem
Was like 15 years without a film so this "new generation" they're targeting doesn't have any nostalgia for the old movies
I've never played a bioware game. The first time I was interested in a bioware game was Andromeda and then I saw the reviews sucked so I passed
Then anthem came out but it was an ea live service title from a studio not known for live services so I waited for reviews and skipped that too
Then I saw veilguard and remembered bioware was responsible for Andromeda and anthem so I waited for reviews and again skipped it
So bioware has failed to win me over as a customer for 3 releases
I did buy mass effect legendary edition but haven't played it

I liked DAO because you could do this, you could completely miss Leliana and Sten, you could kill Zevran immediately, you could have Alistair executed and replaced with Loghain, your character could reject a lot of the premise and instead learn blood magic, fuck over the grey wardens for power etc. It only got dumber and more cartoony in the next games.

Dont believe there is a single thing to point at to blame what happened, but reading stuff behind the scenes paints a picture:
Bioware was publisher and developer until bought by VG Holdings, then sold to EA. Both ME and DAO was in development before any of this. The EA buy should have been a red flag, but Ray and Greg mustve been too blinded by money to see what happened to Origin systems. From there EA ran Bioware like they did sports games, which is where the disconnect happened. DA2 was originally an expansion started alongside Awakening. There was never meant to be a sequel, which is why the epilogue in O are so final. EA insisted on calling it «2». Inquisition was met with executive meddling every step of the way saying «Why isnt this like Skyrim? You gotta make it more like Skyrim. Add mounts! Make map bigger, fill it with shit!» Both DA4 and ME5 was in early development when Casey Hudson make a return and fucking sold EA a castle in the clouds called Anthem. Casey fucked off again and EA ran down the doors at Bioware demanding they make this miracle Destiny killer. Veilguard was originally a similar live service game, like Avowed, not a lot of dev history come out of that one.
Whatever you think of Bioware’s skill, EA is awful to work under.
>>
>>744242804
Veilguard was great actually, and they EA should greenlight a game even more Veilguardy.
