Name a worse genre.
hero shooter
why is it called "lite" instead of "like"
>>744245873is there a difference?
>>744245746Metroidbrainia, even if I like a lot of the games that get stapled with that title.
>>744245746ASSFAGGOTS
>>744245746Deckbuilding Roguelike.>>744245873Some RPG faggot journo tried to be cute about genre titles a decade ago and this braindead audience actually went along with it.
"Roguelite" is not a real genre, they're just "Roguelikes".
>>744245873Roguelikes have to follow the 'berlin interpretation'
>>744245893yeah, roguelike doesn't have incremental progression and you start completely over every run, roguelites do
>>744245893one is like rogue and the other isn't.
>>744245873Don't be a faggot. It's absolutely necessary to distinguish between games with 'meta-progression' that essentially means a load of grinding before you have a shot at winning, and actual Rogue-like games where you can win in one shot if you know what you're doing.
>>744245873roguelikes are like rogue, roguelites are like rogue, but lightly.
>>744245746Gacha
>>744245921>>744246057hard pick between these two
>>744245873because they're not actually like rogueit's like how salisbury steaks aren't actually steaks, but roguelites are even less like rogue than salisbury steaks are like actual steaks
>>744245746fighting games
>>744245873Roguelike - games like rogue. dungeon-crawling text RPGs with permadeath.Roguelite - games like binding of isaac or balatro. action/casual games with permadeath.I don't know where we went wrong to stop using this distinction
>>744246097>FOOD ANALOGYman trad roguelike fags are broken
>>744246127>he's too low iq for a food analogygrim
>>744245746Turn based combat
>>744245746"Cozy Game".
I call all of them roguelikes and not rogue”lites” because I don’t care about respecting whatever autistic distinction there isFor this same reason I call futas futas regardless of the presence of a pussyThankfully the majority of the world agrees with me
>>744245873"lite" has metaprogression (99% of "roguelikes" are actually roguelites) "like" doesn't have metaprogression and must be a turn-based RPG set on a tiled map where you can move once per turn and where the enemies and every event in the game happens a turn after the player moves, a very diluted version or a true roguelike game is something like mystery dungeon games, except only the postgame dungeons where your start at level 1 and can't take anything from or to the dungeon and where the point is simply to clear a large ammount of floors or surive as long as possible before diying.
>>744245746There's no such thing as a roguelite genre. Something like balatro and binding of isaac have almost zero simularities. It's a term used to describe game design with random elements, usually repayable and short length.>>744246107Now you have to distinguish by saying "traditional roguelike" because the average fuck wad has never actually played a game like rogue. I hate this because it makes it more difficult to find actual roguelikes which is one of my favorite genres.
>>744245746Musou.
Immersive sim
>>744246352>"lite" has metaprogressionThis dumbass qualifier is something entirely new to the past few years and is NOT what rougelite was ever supposed to mean. Rougelike fans got mad that their genre got co-opted by any game that had permadeath and randomized runs, so they created "rouguelite" to differentiate the new style of games with traditional rougelikes. Fast for ward to today and now roguelite is being co-opted by retards like you regurgitating a brand new definition of the genre
>>744246371Traditional roguelike tag on steam is pretty fleshed out now as people in the know tag the right games with it. Best to just ignore the roguelike tag as a million different genres are in it now.
>>744246503You have profound retardation.
>goodno meta progression, map to explore, traditional items and levels>not as goodmeta progression, randomized upgrades, locked room style map>what the fuck are you doingsome other genre but with randomized upgrades slapped on
>>744246609Nigga you're the only retarded one here. Rouguelite was created entirely to describe games with perma death and randomized runs that didn't follow the traditional tile based rpg dungeon crawler style. That's what it has meant for years
roguelites are to roguelikes what mid 2000s mtv pop punk is to actual screamo. or what an electric moped that goes 40mph and has pedals that you can't actually pedal the moped with are to actual ebikeswhen you look at games like caves of qud, tales of maj'eyal, elin, or any of the mystery dungeon games, it's obvious that they're similar just from glancing at their gameplay. if you've played one of these and you want more games like it, you want to be able to find these other gameswhen you look at balatro, vampire survivors, darkest dungeon, slay the spire, and hades, they're all completely different games that don't obviously and immediately share anything in common. if you've played and enjoyed one of these games, there's no reason you'd like any of the others because they play completely differently
>>744245746Deckbuilders. Worse still: roguelike deckbuilders. So yeah basically all indieslop.
>>744245746the first thing that came to mind was deckbuilder although >>744246057 is also true
>>744245873roguelikes are games like rogue (but not really, just the randomly generated levels with permadeath)roguelites are games like rogue (but not really) but with some progression where you unlock new stuff between runs "traditional rougelikes" are games like rogue (but really this time)
>>744246057Correct answer. You can't get any worse than a predatory system that can squeeze money out of players.
>>744246726Thanks for confirming exactly what I said in my initial post.
My favorite roguelikes I keep coming back to: DCSS, Brogue, Shattered Pixel Dungeon.
>>744246726roguelite has been used to describe "roguelikes" with meta-progression for at least a decade, maybe even two. the shitty permadeath games that aren't like rogue at all were always called roguelikes
>>744245746Turn based jrpg
>>744246127>trad roguelike fagsThere are only roguelike chads and roguelite fags
>>744245746imsim
survival craftingthey are quite literally all the same game, at least roguelikes have some variety
>>744247068While you're right that some people have used the definition that way for longer than I realized, look up any old discussion on the topic and you'll see tons of people say that rougelites "may" feature meta progression, but not necessarily. You will also see purists insist that rougelikes have to actually be closer to rouge. The problem is that rougelike enthusiasts have ALWAYS been upset that rougelike was used to describe any game with perma death and randomized runs, so there's been over a decade of artists arguing over the "true" definition.
>>744245746Action RPG
>>744246037then why aren't they called roguelights? that's what I thought
Memorization slop that isn't rhythm games or quizzes. So souls games, fightings, etc.

>>744252196nuh-uh
>>744246027i have never agreed with thisnethack is the exemplar of roguelikes, and it technically has metaprogression in the form of bones files
>>744245746>likeKeep nothing>liteHave some form of permanent progression
>>744252498nta and you also have to realize, you only really have a shot at beating a roguelike after dying many times and learning the constraints. nobody is beating nethack on the first try or any other roguelike for that matter.although it does feel more 'legitimate' when your meta-progression is learning about the game rather than unlocks
>>744245873Roguelikes are autism simulatorsRoguelites are gambling simulators
>>744249682probably because americans like their misspelled product style names and it just stuckand no one will confuse it with actual light producing apparatuses gone rogue or something
>>744246027>It's absolutely necessary to distinguish between games with 'meta-progression'Meta-progression never had anything to do with roguelites. A can easily have a roguelite without any meta-progression whatsoever, and if it isn't a roguelike it'll still be a roguelite. The whole "meta-progression" definition of roguelite is just some post-hoc thing that some youtuber popularized. But even the youtuber admitted that they had no idea what the terms meant, and the "definitions" he coined were just what he thought himself to observe.
roguelike is a pointless definition because it's too narrow and roguelite is pointless because it just means roguelike but not as specific. we should just use roguelike and forget about the Berlin faggots
>>744245746Any genre based upon repetition I don't like
>>744245943>Deckbuilding Roguelikeoxymoron
>>744254149>>744254149>definition is pointless because it is too narrowyou are a sub 80 IQ mouthbreathing mongrel
I'm sorry but you're clinically retarded if you think they're the same or that the differences are minuscule enough to not be worth differentiatingthis isn't like nitpicking about the differences between raw black metal and war black metal, it's like the difference between black metal and stomp clap hey. mouthbreethers will say "they both use guitars so they're the same!"do the autists nitpickers exist? of fucking course they do, and they're especially bad for roguelikes, but you shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater
>>744255313why do low IQ incels refuse to elaborate? is it because they lack the cognitive abilities to perform a good argument?
>>744245746Roguelike.I mean look at this shit.
Started working on my own 3D rogulike. Since it is real-time and 3D does that mean I can only legally call it a rogueLITE ?
>>744246027>>744246107>>744246352>>744246945False. The lite/like distinctation never meant anything. The only objective attempt at categorization is the Berlin interpretation. The "meta-progression" point is the worst one, there's some ancient classic RLs that played exactly like Rogue and had morgue files (the files of your dead characters that can impact your next runs), for example.>>744252079>>744253142Correct.
modern roguelikes/lites are basically just arcade games, meaning a game that you can beat quickly and are designed to be replayed. I dont get the hate behind them besides the fact that its a buzzword and there are too many of them.but i like these kinds of games and they are mostly fun
>>744255313>this genre applies to 3 games from the 80s >that's a useful definition >let's make a new word with 1 letter changed to actually refer to the genre though
>>744255930I enjoy a bunch of them as well, although I do deeply despise things like roguevanias since well crafted levels are important there and games where story is important yet they shoehorn roguelite elements. but definitions are important because if you're in the mood for an actual roguelike, you shouldn't have to sift through 5,000 platformers and deckbuilders and survivorlikes and hades clones in order to find one turn based dungeon crawler
>>744255497>A-ARE THOSE... LETTERS?!?!?! AIEEE NIGGERMAN SAVE ME!! I DIDN'T FLUNK ELEMENTARY JUST SO I HAVE TO READ WORDS IN MY VIDYER!!!

they can be a good treat once I'm tired of my usual roguelike playthrough
>>744257849What if my graphical environment broke (again) and I can't get in the mood to fix it before I play some video game, huh? What then?
>>744245746Cookieclicker-likes, which is what most falsely labeled "roguelikes" actually are.

>>744257849>WAH WAH I DON'T WANNA READ I JUST WANT HYPERREALISTIC AI SLOP GRAPHICS ON MY SCREEN INSTEAD OF WORDS AND I CAN'T PLAY MY VIDYER WITH ONLY A KEYBOARD LARPER LARPER LARPER AIEEE!!!the fact that you can't even understand how much more superior and how much less of a hassle the keyboard-focused shortcut-dense control scheme for playing roguelikes are, and even demand mouse control (an objectively inferior control scheme as you'd have to move your mouse over and over again to open menus and waste time when you can just press two or three buttons) enough proof of your niggardry. i'd even go further to say that a lot of rpgs would have been more convenient with such a control scheme.as for graphics, i think it's functional enough, and i prefer it compared to the more garish and even occasionally ugly graphical implementations in other roguelikes outside of like Elin. i think it has its charm. you're still a nigger for being a graphicsfag though.

>>744259029>ctrl-alt-shift-x to walk down stairsNo.
>>744258445This.Idle games are all worse
>>744259029DCSS definitely has converted me over time, when I started playing it I could never imagine playing without the inventory appended on the side or mostly using the keyboard but once you have it down you can do a 3 rune run in a couple hours and a 15 in a few.

>>744255497E
>>744246027I honestly can't think of any roguelikes where you can't win your run on the first try outside of the ones that hand out 1 forced loss to tutorialize the meta progression elements. But those can generally be won on your first non tutorial run.
>>744256035>3 games from the 80sPokemon Mystery Dungeon, Elona, Demon, Crawl Stone Soup, Nethack, Unicorn, Angband, IVAN, Cogmind, Elin, Tangledeep, TOME, AdomThere’s a shitload of actual Roguelikes
