>Dev: "WE'RE ANNOUNCING A NEW GAME, WHO'S HYPED??">gamers: "Nice, so it'll be out soon?">Devs: "NO, IT'LL BE DONE IN 8-12 YEARS, BUT STAY HYPED UNTIL THEN!!"What the fuck?
I honestly find it extremely suspicious that even small indie projects get stuck in EA hell for up to 6 years and somehow the studios still have enough funds to pay salaries for a team of 15 people. You'd think with the advent of game engines where 90% of the work is already done all that's left is game design and asset creation but even looking at games in the 90s and early 2000s they could churn out projects in 18 months while having to code the engine themselves and support multiple platforms.
worth the wait!
>>744249596Yeah but which would you rather have: A huge paycheck for 1-2 yearsor The same paycheck but for 6-12 years
>>744249596Are we talking indies or "indies"? If it's small enough the devs might have dayjobs, and if it's an "indie" game they might just be milking publisher money as long as they can. On that note I'm also pretty sure AAA devs do that so they can inflate value to shareholders/buyers. I think that's why Bethesda announced TES so early
>release the game>slap early access on it>ignore all the seething gamer reviews about it being an unfinished buggy mess>spend the next 8 years slowly finishing it>gamers proclaim it a masterpiece and forgive you completely for your dog shit work ethicGamers get exactly the treatment they deserve.
>>744249596nah. No way an engine is that good and just werks and games are big and need hd photorealism on everything n all that.
>>744249374>by the time the game finally comes out, its actually changed so much during development its no longer what you were once hyped for
>>744249374they should stop fucking around and make games in 8 months like they used to. The games end up better for it anyway, the extra 10 years only make the game worse
>>744249942I beat nine sols yesterday, looked up the dev team and they're 12 people. Took them about 5-6 years to finish their game. That kind of indie, not the guy doing it as a hobby and updating a itch.io page every other months.
>>744249374>What the fuck?Publicly traded company. Investors are the target audience, not players. Your pittance means nothing to them.
>>744249374This is especially bad with the fucking Jurassic Park Survive game coming out 'soon'.>GUYS WE'RE ANNOUNCING THIS GAME! LOOK HOW COOL IT IS! ARE YOU EXCITED?>2 years later>WE ARE NOT STARTING NARRATIVE DESIGNHow the fuck do you announce a game with a full trailer without even having a fucking story written yet?
>we want to hire you to shill on reddit, twitter and 4chan for the next 8 years of development to keep the hype up and the community engagedWould your take the job?
>>744250092>WE ARE NOW*
>>744250094Am I paid in money, or hotpockets?
>>744250172Reddit gold and discord nitro.
>>744250092It seems like getting the "idea" of a game out is more important than what the game will actually be. It's completely psychotic of course, it's basically demanding people be excited for a mystery box with a dinosaur on it. But someone in marketing making a LOT OF MONEY told some shovelhead that all that matters is "visibility in the gaming market" or some shit.
>>744250172...what do you mean "paid"?
>>744249596>all that's left is game design and asset creationwhich take the majority of the time>assetsextreme time to make, especially the more HD and pretty they are, which is what's demanded of even most indies now. Add more time the more bespoke/unique the style is, which is also needed to stand out in the current market.>game designoften overlooked and I wish devs would spend more time thinking deeply about their core game design. Lots of time is wasted by overlooking things or being wishy washy and having to re-make things. Also, playtesting takes a lot of time and can easily be done/responded to in stupid unproductive ways that add delays.Though I mostly agree with you, devs shouldn't reveal anything until it's practically finished.
>>744250075Then advertise to the investors exclusively, not to the public?
>>744251158>devs shouldn't reveal anything until it's practically finished. But if they do that they can't milk those sweet sweet shareholder handouts. Free money just for making a shitty school project.Think of the shareholders.
