What is it about Morrowind that makes it so good in spite of its flaws?

I've been put off by Morrowind because I thought it would feel janky and old. And actually, it does. But at the same time it's quickly becoming my favorite over Skyrim and Oblivion, but I can't quite pinpoint why.

There are the obvious flaws, like NPC simulation being relatively poor. For example, it's dumb af that I can sleep in at the Mage's Guild, then be awakened by a Dark Brotherhood assassin who tries to stab me to death whilst everyone in the building stands in place and doesn't react.

But at the same time, I don't think Oblivion or Skyrim comes anywhere close to crafting a worldspace that feels anywhere close to as real, authentic, unapologetic, and LIVED-IN as Morrowind.

So can we agree on Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion ?
>>
>>744476249
I literally just started playing it this week and already have 19+ hours in so both your statements are retarded and irrelevant.

Did some Morrowunc dick down your mother or something, is that why you're so analpained?

how?

>Muh combat
Oblivion and Skyrim only saw marginal improvements to combat. The only real major difference being removal of RNG.
>>
For me, it’s those small things like how you can stumble upon quest objectives or important NPCs without even knowing what they are.

In most RPGs
>there’s a great beast lurjing next to a town
>it won’t spawn until you hear a tragic tale about how it killed peasant Drasha’s brother etc.
In Morrowind, you just encounter and wonder that what’s that named amulet in its belly. Or you can go to a wrong place and get your innarda ripped out by enemies that are completely out of your league, and you won’t necessarily even know what the fuck they are (in case you end up in a 6th house base accidentally).

And I know that it is a fucking small thing, but seeing things out of order is a thing that really helps me in breaking the ”this is just a theme park” feeling that most games have.

Also, for someone that loves Morrowind threads and loves falling asleep to playthroughs; what version of the game should i play for my first time? Each time i play Skyrim i spend 1 week download 1,000 mods and get them to all work together before actually playing. is that big project worth waiting for?

Morrowind has the most interesting world, which is truly unique among fantasy settings

Skyrim had the most bland world with only few fantasy props like giants and mammoths

Morrowind has an entire economy that is also based on fantasy creatures like the kwama, stuff like scribs and the netch

The later games feel bland in comparison, though oblivion is still my favourite despite that, skyrim felt boring and the fake accents were off putting
>>
>>744500962
An Oblivion fan has no right to call any other TES game's setting bland
>>
>>744501004
Eat shit, or play skyrim same thing
>>
It's main strengths are its unique setting, the main quest which conveys the player to most major areas and factions in the game while also being interesting in its own right, and the magic system.

>>744483978
Given the slow pace of the SHotN (Skyrim) team (it's been 6 years since the last release, they have very few people working on it, from what I read at one point doing Markarth Side was literally a one-man project), it wouldn't surprise me if Wealth Beyond Measure releases first, followed up by Sutch.
All these projects share most of their members, but their progress varies widly depending on each person's interest at the time, which is why we're even seeing more progress as of late on Rihad (Hammerfell) and Scars of the Shadow (High Rock) than Skyrim.

>>744506674
I feel like Black Marsh, a project that's not even properly open yet, is getting more progress and enthusiasm than Skyrim is.

I played Oblivion and after like 10 Oblivion gates or whatever I dropped it. The definition of lackluster. I heard the DLC was good. I dropped Skyrim after two hours because you basically see everything there is to see in two hours cus everything is the same. Genuinely a terrible game that took the RPG elements of previous games and dumbed it down even further than Oblivion into an action RPG/hack and slash.
>>
>>744476178
I think it's mainly the atmosphere and the setting.
Morrowind feels like on of the very few games where you actually get to live in a civilization that's both alien but also understandable and explored.
Everything, from the religion, to the weapons and armor, to the government, to even the food is not only unique but also given enough context that it manages to fit in a cohesive picture and given the right weight.
At the same time, the imperial presence not only is explored in an interesting way (not merely the "evil conquerors of the poor innocent dunmer", but a reality that is complex, nuanced and much closer to how these things in real life work), but it also give the player an anchor of familiarity that makes the alien parts stand out even more.
The open world and the general freedom of the game works perfectly for this, since you are free to explore different parts of the settings and make your own opinion on things.
Also the game doesn't frontload its lore, you have to actually search around and find it, and even live it, yourself, since there isn't even an encyclopedia or anything in game.
In fact getting to uncover more details is almost a reward all on its own: for example, slavery is a relevant part of the setting, but for years I didn't know of the Twin Lamps.
TL;DR: Morrowind is fun because it's a fun world to explore and live in.

people always say morrowind's setting is what makes it good, but they don't talk enough about morrowind's gameplay and design which contributes just as much. the game plays differently from the others and that matters too. morrowind is more focused on exploration. without quest markers you have to read NPC directions and find your way. to find NPCs in towns you have to ask around. might not sound like much but it contributes a lot to making the game feel so different. its really immersive. even small quests focus on navigation. there's also a bigger emphasis on stats and numbers.

the combat is very abuse-heavy and the quests all have very primitive scripting which leads to most quests either being kill missions, fetch missions or 'persuade bar fill' missions.

you can tell there was room for way better quest design by playing TR, i think the best example is the TR mages guild quest to help a mage whos stuck in the rafters of their house by using dispel on them, a fantastic way of showing the player what tf dispel even does.

With Poison Song, you can advance the first few ranks of Indoril, and can join the Ordinators as well. But for the full Indoril experience to be playable, we have to wait until they remake the rest of Indoril lands and make Almalexia, so... 5 more years or so intertwined with other territory releases.
Next expansion is Wealth Beyond Measure, finishing Hlaalu content for good, and then the focus will be on Redoran territories (Silgrad Tower, then 2 more Redoran releases) and Indoril lands being redone & expanded upon.
Once all of that is done, it'll be time to start doing Dres lands & content and redoing Telvanni's.

You could also have shared the bit after that in which a mod appeared, told them to shut the fuck up, and everyone was reminded TR as a whole doesn't care about real-life identities and politics in any way and is just trying to do a good lore-friendly representation of mainland Morrowind, and if there's a random trans character here or there because somebody wanted to put it in it doesn't matter as long as no one decides to go on a crusade like that person of the picture (who btw was having that meltdown over some other dev saying and offhand comment over Vivec's masculinity and lack of feminity given his model ingame).

Oblivion is objectively the worst of them all because it's the most copy + paste of them all (Ayleid Ruins #100, Caves #231, Mines #30 , Forts #50, Sewers #13, Oblivion Gates #33 — all missing proper environmental storytelling and unique elements that differentiate themselves) with broken systems (poor level scaling, retarded Radiant AI dialogue) and the most generic setting.
It's really only saved by it's campiness that help make many of its bad elements seem kind of charming.
It also butchers much of the established lore, and I'm not just talking about the fact that Cyrodiil was meant to have a more jungle-like biome, but the lack of differentiation between Colovian and Nibenese cultures, and many other things that were basically steamrolled over to create one of the most generic fantasy games of all time.
>>
>>744545135
>retarded Radiant AI dialogue
tbf it helps to make it feel alive, it's way more immersive than morrowind. skyrim is the most immersive only because of the better graphics and more attention to detail in cities
the generic setting and throwing away morrowind's lore is just personal preference
>>
Kinda tempted to make a vivec only file, not allowed to leave the city, kinda cheaty as its the most sprawling one in the game or just confine myself to some region like azura coast
>>
>>744545504
>tbf it helps to make it feel alive
It did make it feel more alive, but also less real. It's pretty goofy though, so at least you can laugh about it

>the generic setting and throwing away morrowind's lore is just personal preference
It flattens the complexity of the setting/worldspace and its inhabitants. It's objectively less interesting and feels less properly lived-in as a result.
That's the Morrowind appeal Oblivion is lacking. Hell, even Skyrim has more cultural distinctions and layering in its worldspace.
>>
>>744541154
Nah, it's the worst by far which is why its only fans only like it because "it's le comfy" and "it made me feel good back in the day :)" while Skyrim and Morrowind actually get people invested in the world
>>
>>744546429
Do it. But I see no reason why you would explicitly be confined to Vivec City. I'd probably expand to the Ascadian Isles (a range that would be realistic for an actual resident of Vivec city the remain within).

I've been thinking about this revently. The way Morrowind's and Oblivion's worlds were written had very different purposes from one another. Morrowind, i think (i have no idea if it was a conscious decision from Bethesda's part), basically makes up for its lack of character writing by trying to get the audience to fall in love with the world instead. Hence the main quest often just telling you to go read history books, and it having several elements that unironically appeal to the "what do they eat" and "what's his tax policy" crowd.

Oblivion on the other hand was ultimately trying to be the most accessible fantasy game possible, and to do that, as Kirkbride infamously pointed out, it borrowed a lot from the most popular fantasy media at the time, the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies. In this context, the Elder Scrolls setting and all its weird unique quirks were more than anything obstacles on Bethesda's way of conquering the general audience. They made the conscious decision of turning Cyrodiil into a rather standard medieval fantasy land and went all in on wacky character writing, and the once complex worldbuilding marked by details and intricate political stuff was replaced with a fairy tale-like approach. It's a story where the good king died, spiky red and black guys threaten the land, and therefore you must find the next good king before it's too late, there are no subversions or interesting questions like what Morrowind dies with the concept of the Nerevarine.

The poster you replied to was right that it is ultimately a matter of personal preference, but at the end of the day, I'd say Morrowind's approach was objectively better at getting people hooked. After all, Morrowind fans are the ones who've spent the past 20 years trying to bring the setting they love so much to life through modding, while all Oblivion fans have to say about their own game is "yeah it was fun".

Vanilla with just the Morrowind plugin for a few levels and then add the Tribunal and Blood Moon plugins. Because goty edition starts you off with all the plugins so you start getting attacked by assassins in at level 1, which isn't really a problem at all, but it doesn't make sense that you just got to Morrowind by boat and these dudes want to kill you right away.

>try to kill you for no reason at the beginning of the game
>clearly a puppet of the Altmer illuminati and banned worship of their own fucking emperor (who the Nords also worship) to appease these tall goblins

Like what am I missing here, where's the stuff that actually shows the Empire's good side in Skyrim itself (as opposed to other games)?

I never even considered the Stormcloaks.
you're right that if Skyrim the does a bad job of making players understand or care about the Empire. But anyone coming off of Morrowind and especially Oblivion "gets" what the Empire is all about, and I think the case for the Empire becomes stronger for pretty much any race besides Nord, and even then it'd be divisive for the average Nordic family.

Can I ask what your roleplay was? Consider that every vanilla player has to headcanon a reason why their character was coming from Cyrodil at the beginning.
My Khajiit was born in Cyrodil, his family had gone from affluent to destitute over the course of the Great War a generation ago, and at this point had turned to thievery, He was fleeing Bruma county northwards when he got caught up with a bunch of rebels. Cyrodilic Khajiit obviously don't stand to gain from joining the Stromcloaks. Khajiit cares not for Talos and the near-execution would never have happened without rebel rabble-rousers.
over the course of the game he figured out the Thalmor's long game of pitting man against man, and decided a decisive victory one way or the other in the civil war was the best course of action. I guess he was a Hobbesian status quo enjoyer so ending the war with the Empire still in control was the most normal course of action.

I guess the only other pro-empire thing I'll say is that most of Skyrim's holds are corrupt and shitty and poor besides Solitude. Bandits and crime and monsters are so bad that the Nords seem almost incapable of self-governance. Nords are kind of assholes in Morrowind too, killing low level players for fun. Nordic thievesguild and fighters guild and mage guild are all disasters from the minute the DB walks in their doors. Might cause a player to desire some order in all the chaos.
>>
>>744562752
I played Morrowind before this and nah, I still really don't care about the Empire at all. The only thing they really did for me in that game was have the mages guild provide me with a convenient teleport service. Yeah, I know the Blades get you started on the main quest and all, but the results of the main quest ended up fucking over Vvardenfell in the long run anyway, so that bit is kind of a wash

>I guess the only other pro-empire thing I'll say
I mean, I don't think you really said anything pro-empire before this

>Bandits and crime and monsters are so bad that the Nords seem almost incapable of self-governance
You could lay that at the feet of the empire just as much as you could the Stormcloaks
When there's a war going on, lowlives will take advantage of the chaos, that's just how things are.

The Nords only magic school fell into the ocean and their fighters guild is a bunch of good for nothing drunken WEREWOLVES. Skyrim is kind of a backwater besides Solitude. Also Maven Blackbriar is running the only non-capital city in Stormcloak territory. the war is bad business for everyone and the Stormcloaks started it. It is important to note that it is less "Cyrodil VS Skyrim" and more "the entire empire +the Solitude half of Skyrim VS Windhelm and some sympathizers"
I ask again, what is your character's race and backstory that makes the Stormcloaks seem good to you? Why would an average Breton join them? Unless personal grievance with the Empire was baked into their backstory. Stormcloaks seem politically isolated and unpopular in the greater setting.

Morrowind players always act like the Empire sucks because larping as a xenophobic dunmer is fun. In reality though, The Imperial Mages Guild is an invaluable asset to any character. The Imperial Cult is a truly good charity organization, and the Imperial Legion fights crime and monsters on behalf of the citizens. Meanwhile Dunmer institutions kill people indiscriminately.

In Skyrim, Hadvar or Ralof or whatever says "Imperial walls used to make me feel so safe" Yea, let us return to that. Let's not tear down everything around us in a thalmor-approved chimpout. Stormcloaks are short-sighted.

admittedly every game I play Khajiit thief first, Imperial Legionnaire second. I'm biased in that way I guess because the Khajiit takes advantage of Imperial hospitality/ meritocracy and is opposed to Dunmer and Nordic nationalists. Meanwhile my Imperial characters always just kind of do the whole "for the 9 and Emperor, citizen" shtick. Oblivion players spend all game saving Cyrodil so they have a sunken cost in keeping it going.
>>
>>744564154
>I ask again, what is your character's race and backstory that makes the Stormcloaks seem good to you?
If you must know I'm currently playing as a Nord mage, but regardless, my question is concerning things that are presented in game, not headcanon. And while there's not a good non-RP related reason to join the Stormcloaks, the reasons I presented above are non RP-related reasons to avoid joining the empire, things that objectively happened in the game. And yeah, it doesn't really matter if my character cares about Talos, the point is that the Empire is too pathetic to even stand firm on the man that founded them

so if there's nothing counterbalancing this and I want to end the war anyway, well, might as well favor the side that I don't feel like a bitch for joining

What gets me the most is that the Empire were literally winning when they signed the peace and at worst it was a draw. The Elves could not muster another attack and the humans would grow stronger with time as more reinforcements and fresh conscripts joined the ranks. They gave up because the same defeatist mentality that caused them to be so ill-prepared in the first place remained prevalent at high command despite objectively regaining the initiative. They even accepted the original Elven terms, Empire fags are so delusional.

you asked about the temple specifically but ALMSIVI isnt even around in the 4th era and whatever reclamation tribunal of daedra took over has no official position. Mephala and Boethiah would appreciate Ulfric killing Torygg in his quest to usurp power. So maybe following the Stormcloaks woulkd be interesting in the spirit of the Three "good" daedra.

the politics itself of nords vs empire is kind of small potatoes to a dark elf. 3rd era nords disliked the Empire and the armistice or whatever with Vivec and Tiber Septim but A LOT has changed, their priorities would be the loss of the Living Gods, the Argonian invasion, and the refugee meteor/eruption crisis. Empire feels a lot like the lesser of evils compared to An-xileel, dragons, and even the Aldmeri Dominion.

>>744568753
honestly I've never heard of "NeoVivec" the map is in no way official or canon. Stands out to me too. Imagine this though, Vivec might be a crater but the Great House's Vaults would make it a hotspot for treasure hunters, divers, delvers. It was a lot of people's homes so I feel like it'd still be on maps but maybe "Vivec Ruins" wouldve been better.

ok enjoy your brother war idiot. Even if Stormcloaks win they'll have zero allies or trade partners. Historically they absolutely can, their empire for example, but that is also assuming that Ulfric would want to instead of just consolidating his independent kingdom and keeping the peace with House Redoran who are the most likely conflict and they are already way too busy to start an unnecessary war with the Nords.
>Isolation will mean quiet death or irrelevance at best.
I can absolutely see Ulfric choosing to align with the Empire on an equal basis assuming a new Great War starts, the difference is they would be equals this time instead of the Nords being treated as just farm province where funds and recruits get drawn from.

Highrock is still loyal to the Empire why would they trade with traitors? I doubt Hammerfell appreciates Ulfric opening another theatre in the war, the Empire's troops would've been better stationed to assist Hammerfell in the current war than fighting this stupid civil war.
a handful of court wizards cannot stand up to the Dominion, they don't have access to any trumpcards that the average Thalmor agent couldn't also cast. Typical Nord arrogance, causing you to underestimate your opponent. That is why Nords are best used as grunts for empire, your province has no manners, no sense of logistics or reality. Nord Empire glory days was a very long time ago. Skyrim isn't "equal" it is literally only good as a farm province. Ulfric is making Skyrim less than useful, an actively harmful liability.
Ulfric's "independent kingdom" would fare about as well as Pelletine and Anequina did (divided and conquered instantly) or Orsinium (raped and sacked infinite times)

>Highrock is still loyal to the Empire why would they trade with traitors?
Money + proximity + who's going to stop them? Is Cyrodiil going to ship a Legion up on a punitive expedition when facing the Aldmeri threat to the South? Don't act like Bretons are renowned for their unified culture, enough noble houses will smell the opportunity to make a difference.
>I doubt Hammerfell appreciates Ulfric opening another theatre in the war, the Empire's troops would've been better stationed to assist Hammerfell
Lol, lmao. Why would Hammerfell give a fuck when they already won their war? This is the same Empire that literally wrote them off, the Legions staying behind is cool but that was not the Imperial Tower doing that but the Legates and Legionaries themselves. The Redguards don't need Imperial troops (which are not even officially allowed in Hammerfell) as they already signed a ceasefire with the Altmer.
>a handful of court wizards cannot stand up to the Dominion, they don't have access to any trumpcards that the average Thalmor agent couldn't also cast.
So you admit that Nords DO have magic users and you were being facetious, no one said they were on the same level as the Aldmeri.
>Typical Nord arrogance, causing you to underestimate your opponent
LoserOfTheGreatWarSaysWhat?
>That is why Nords are best used as grunts for empire
Crazy that Nords don't like the Empire with such "brotherhood of men" statements as that. That is literally the Empire's policy and they wonder why Nords think they are gay manlets.
>Ulfric's "independent kingdom" would fare about as well as Pelletine and Anequina did (divided and conquered instantly) or Orsinium (raped and sacked infinite times)

Morrowind is genuine. As in, it may as well be an actual world and not just a video game even if it is contrained by limitations inposed on it and inhenet to it as a video game/product. Deterministic design helps to ground it and makes it feel genuine too.

Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion? Yes, in general. Although i find that Skyrim = Oblivion, due to both games having too many flaws but of different kind. Skyrim is bland and mediocre, writing sucks ass, gameplay is tedious and overstrained, but its a good sandbox and walking sim, and has more mechanics even if they are shallow, while Oblivion's gameplay is fine even if a bit floaty but level-scaling and level-scaled world design absolutely kill it, despite having some genuinely good writing and quest designs, NPC schedules/AI and expressive faces (people complain about potato-heads, but they ignore the fact that player can read NPCs emotional/psychological states based on expressiveness of their faces).
So its more of Morrowind >>> Skyrim = Oblivion IMO. Because if you modernise gameplay mechanics for Morrowind, the quality of the game overall will absolutely outperform modernised gameplay of Skyrim or Oblivion.
Think of them this way. Morrowind is the world you live in. Oblivion is the adventures/escapades you get into. Skyrim is the walk in the park/outdoors. Silly, but the meaning is there.

The "brother war" is happening regardless you dumb fuck
>Even if Stormcloaks win they'll have zero allies or trade partners
That's not a problem for Hammerfell and the Redguards (who also btw look suspiciously at magic users), who were able to beat the Thalmor back without the help of the Thalmor lapdogs (The Empire).
>they could probably do some shit to freeze or starve out Skyrim in a conflict down the road.

It only lasts 60 seconds.
Balance is a finnicky thing. Plenty of issues with it in Morrowind, but it gets absolutely absurd in Oblivion and Skyrim. And when i say balance, i mean shit like mead restoring 20 points of stamina and damaging stamina regen, or food healing for 1-5 points of health, or leather boots weigting 1 unit while slippers weight 2.

>Highrock is still loyal to the Empire
High Rock is a fractured collection of rival kingdoms that might nominally answer to the Empire, but they aren't going to financially cripple themselves by cutting off both Hammerfell and Skyrim over Cyrodiil's politics, be fr right now.

Half of High Rock's economy revolves around the Iliac Bay, which they share directly with Hammerfell. There is absolutely zero lore suggesting High Rock embargoed Hammerfell after they left the Empire to fight the Thalmor, so why would they treat Skyrim any differently?

Plus, Breton politics essentially consists of merchants and nobles backstabbing each other for profit. If one kingdom tries an embargo, they risk getting outcompeted by neighboring kingdoms that WILL be open to relations and trade. If Daggerfall or Wayrest tries to play hardball with Skyrim, border kingdoms like Evermore or Jehanna will gladly scoop up those trade contracts to secure the bag. Weak argument.

If you play the game and listen to dialogues, especially Hadvar's parents in Riverwood, people tell you that everything was fine and calm and there were no Thalmor until Ulfric made a chimpout in Markarth. And its because of that chimpout that Thalmor got uppity and reminded everyone of that clause in Concordate about Talos. Thank you Ulfric. And then the bastard used consequences of his chimpout as a justification for uprising and rebellion. Siding with Stormcloaks is basically siding with misguided people who are too emotional and led by a Thalmor puppet and managed by people who want to gain some power.
In all of my playthroughs, i have never sided with Stormcloaks. And never will.

FUCK no, you retarded niggerfaggot. Skyrim is far, far inferior to Oblivion because Skyrim's quests are complete dogshit and even modding the game to infinity doesn't fix that. Not to mention the decimated NPC AI, no more of them traveling between cities or stealing if they run out of food and their honor is low enough. Skyrim is so fucking static and boring. Meanwhile you can fix Oblivion with like three mods, since it's all mechanics (which even then I had no problem with as a kid playing the game and only found out later zoomoids can't even play a baby game like Oblivion right).

Dres are THE largest prodicers of saltrice. And saltrice requires a lot of slave labour. Saltrice (so basically rice but has nutrients) is THE main economic export of Dres to the rest of province.
There are other foods, wickwheat, marshmerrow, hackle-lo, ash yams, and then all the meat from bugs, kwama, guars, etc. but nothing on the scale to satisfy the population of Morrowind at large, i think. Basically Dres surplus production of rice keeps them wealthy and Morrowind fed. Think of China and rice exports/consumption.

Both sides feel meaningless and interchangeable and the game does a very poor job of selling the idea that a war is going on. It's a writing/design problem more than anything. its not a generic dnd/lotr fantasy world like skyrim and oblivion are. the world feel genuinely alien and weird but still believable and realistic. I think that is the main reason.

also oblivion has a boatload of mechanical flaws that morrowind did not. most loot is hand placed in morrowind which makes exploring 10x more fun. in oblivion there were only a handful of dungeons that had anything unique happening in them at all. you were much better off just repeating the same dungeon you know has easy loot than it is to actually explore because all the loot is random. quest rewards are also leveled so you get actively punished for playing the game and leveling up. i genuinely don't understand how the game released so broken, I dont think anyone played it all the way through before it shipped.

skyrim fixes a lot of these issues, quest rewards are no longer levelled and leveled dungeon loot is handled a bit better (i.e. tiered npc with set pools of loot instead of random bandits wearing full glass armor). additionally the dungeons have a lot more interesting content in them. despite this the game is just kind of shallow. the quests, particularly the guilds, just feel like short questines than significant content.

>>744598475
In Arena & Daggerfall, Cyrodiil was an empty grassland with a single city in the middle. It wasn't even called Cyrodiil, only "The Imperial Province". The Imperials did not exist yet, neither as a race nor as a culture, and the province as a whole was meant to be inhabited entirely by the eight races that existed at the time and the mixed-race results of their interbreeding. Also, the Roman aesthetic wasn't even a thing yet. I'm telling you this because "it was that way in Arena!" really isn't as good of an argument as you think it is, i don't see you clamoring to have the Imperial race erased from existence because that's how Arena did it. Oblivion's Cyrodiil is not Arena's Cyrodiil, it is a LoTRfied Morrowind Cyrodiil.

Also, the same game that made the Imperials a thing and gave them their Roman aesthetic also firmly established that they're not just roman, but a mixture of many cultures, most notably east asian, and that the place did have variety in its biomes, it wasn't just jungle.

That’s mostly because Imperials were cave dwellers before wewuzzing as Ayleids and adopting elven language and general Aldmeri culture. I don’t see any Asian influences on the Imperials in Morrowind, not from culture like names to race as in slanted eyes. The only confirmation we get is from Kirkbride who wrote theoretical lore but in the end it didn’t make into the final game as in actual designs. LOTR released in 2001 btw, meanwhile nothing in Oblivion actually feels like its got anything to do with LOTR unless you wanna generalize European settings eg grasslands.
>>
>>744599690
>That’s mostly because Imperials were cave dwellers before wewuzzing as Ayleids and adopting elven language and general Aldmeri culture.
What are you talking about? Are you saying that their inexistence in Arena & Daggerfall was a result of that? Because it wasn't, naturally as none of that lore was even a thing yet back then.

Again, the Imperials as a race did not exist until Redguard's Pocket Guide to the Empire, where Cyrodiil was mostly jungle and the Imperial race was divided between two radically different nations. That's their original state. They did not have one in Arena because they didn't even exist yet.
>I don’t see any Asian influences on the Imperials in Morrowind,
You know all the asian weapons you see in Morrowind? Those are meant to be Imperial in origin. Native Dunmer swords like the Chitin, ebony and glass ones are european-looking and double-edged.

The Imperials you actually see in-game in Morrowind are all Colovian yes, but we know the Nibenese still exist since NPCs and books still describe the Imperial City and easterb Cyrodiil as jungle rice farmers with a penchant for wacky cults.
>>
>>744600210
Imperials did exist as a race in Arena although not fully fleshed out admittedly but what really was in Arena? It’s a quantity before quality game but even then the imperial city is distinguishable in a Oblivion like architecture, particularly the Arena in Oblivion before said wewuzzing as Ayleids.
The only Asian weapons that come to mind are the actual Asian names stuff like Wakizashis, Tantos and Katanas but those are not imperial in origin. The only stuff that looks Asian without being clearly named Asian for the most part is daedric, just like daedric armor. Hell even the imperial shortsword is clearly a gladius. Again weird how the imperials in Morrowind are completely based on the Roman Empire and further European culture sprinkled in, meanwhile the only Colovian stuff we have ingame is a Santa Claus hat.
>>
>>744601334
>Imperials did exist as a race in Arena
They did not. According to Ted Peterson, he pictured the pre-redguard Imperial Province as being inhabited by the eight races and their mixed race offspring, not any distinct race of its own.
>but those are not imperial in origin.
They are. The lore behind them is that the Akaviri brought them to Cyrodiil and the Nibenese made them widely distributed across Tamriel, Dai-Katanas were mentioned as a eastern Cyrodiilic cultural export in the Pocket Guide.
>Again weird how the imperials in Morrowind are completely based on the Roman Empire and further European culture sprinkled in, meanwhile the only Colovian stuff we have ingame is a Santa Claus hat.
Almost everything "Imperial" you see in Morrowind is Colovian. That's who the colovians are, the roman and other european-esque people, as opposed to the more exotic Nibenese.

They were literally all bad looking for their times. Morrowind has the best and most unique artistic direction though, so it has a lasting charm for low-poly graphics.

Not impossible, daedric weapons in Morrowind are just ebony weapons enchanted with daedra suffering, after all.
>Daedric weapons are made from raw ebony which has been refined using the craft and magical substances of the lesser minions of Oblivion. The process is not a pleasant one for the Daedra involved, and the weapons retain echoes of preternaturally prolonged suffering endured during manufacture. Daedric weapons are the most rare and expensive weapons known in Tamriel.

>Which side should I love more
It's more of a "which side should I hate more".
Greedy imperials who want to kill old honorable dragons are abominable, but so are stupid vikings who literally kill each other with their autistic screeching.
But the Thalmor autism is on another level and them getting triggered by people praising Tiber Septim is so funny that making a peace deal between empire and nords is the only correct choice so they can keeo kcetching.

>try to kill you for no reason at the beginning of the game
They have a reason, you're a dirty border hopper and got caught alongside a group of secessionists. The fact that you're not on the list of known rebels doesn't really help your case that much.
>clearly a puppet of the Altmer illuminati
If they were a puppet of the Thalmor then they would have no reason to execute Ulfric. Ulfric is valuable to the elves as long as he lives and they want him to keep fighting as long as possible.
>during the main quest, Tullius chimps out and screeches that you're favoring the Stormcloaks if you... say that Ulfric and Tullius should both give up one city apiece in a fair and equal exchange for peace
They both chimp out depending on who you're favoring and who gets fucked during the negotiations. Congrats for revealing that you never bothered to act differently just to see what would happen.
>Like what am I missing here
The fact that Ulfric is an unlikable retard and people would rather side with their own former executioners over that faggot.

The best choice is to avoid that questline entirely.

Morrowind was such an alien and mysterious place. Then Oblivion came along and turned Cyrodil into a generic LOTR grassland. Imagine if the heartland had never been retconned, here's a strange alien landscape full of weird plants and animals in real life:

Imagine if any post-Morrowind Bethesda games were even a little alien and weird like that.

I would say Morrowind > Oblivion > Skyrim. I started with Morrowind when it came out. Oblivion felt good to me too, but Morrowind had what felt like more freedom to make your character godlike. Skyrim felt like a step down in most ways. Mods were Skyrims saving grace and made it tolerable for me. Base Skyrim just felt fucking bad, especially in terms of the main story.
>>
>>744476178
I'm waiting for the official remake. Morrowind is so outdated mechanically that they could make it ultra woke and it still would be a remake instead of a demake.

Zero magic:
>Arbalist
Marksman (Crossbow), Alchemy (Levitate/Waterwalk/Night Eye/Telekinesis), Stealth
"The Warrior" birthsign (Orc's racial power is nice)
>Ninja
Stealth, Marksman (Poison stars), Short-Blade (Cursed poison dagger + Wakizashi)
"The Lover" birthsign
>Berserker
Two-Handed skill of choice, Unarmored, Athletics
"The Steed" birthsign
>Blademaster
Short-Blade (Paralysis), Long-Blade (Katanas), Medium Armor, Enchanting
Hotkey from paralysis Short-Blade into Dai-Katana for guaranteed hits to preserve charges
"The Lady" birthsign
>Viking
Axe, Block (Charge while blocking), Light Armor
"The Thief" birthsign (Block triggers AFTER a hit is successful)

Half "caster":
>Mystic Spearman
Spear, Enchanting (level by recharging weapon), Mysticism (Soultrap), Light Armor/Unarmored
Very Early: On-strike, Bound Spear
Early: On-strike, Bound Spear + Bound Armor
Mid: On-strike, Bound Spear + Bound Armor + Summon
Late: Rings of Damage strength/agility on target (Spear them from safety once immobile)
"The Ritual" birthsign
>Spell-blade
Destruction (Frost/Fire-bite cover most armored enemies), Long-Blade (Saber for unarmored enemies), Light Armor/Unarmored
"The Apprentice" birthsign
>Trickster
Mysticism (Mark/Recall), Restoration (Restore Health), Alteration (Lock), Illusion (Invisibility), Security, Short-Blade
+Blessed Touch (unique spell from Ygfa)
"The Serpent" birthsign (Breton's resist pairs well even if you have restoration)

Any QoL skills for Major/Minor like Mecantile or Athletics are always nice.
Builds lean more for roleplay than breaking the game in any way.
>>
>>744621978
Since Poison Song is the next update I'm thinking of doing some sort of Indoril themed build. Like an Indoril Ronin or something idk.

>major skills
Long Blade
Medium Armor
Spear
Marksman
Athletics

>minor skills
Unarmored
Mysticism
Illusion
Alteration
Alchemy

Something like that. It's always hard to come up with what magic schools to go for if any, since there are so many of them, and they do a lot, especially in Morrowind.
>>
>>744621312
TES is really not the franchise for you if you wanna see Orcs be an evil savage villain race because that's how Tolkien did it, Orsimer have been portrayed as secretly being misunderstood "people just like us" since Daggerfall and in Morrowind in particular most Orc NPCs were regular citizens like in that pic or soldiers in service of the Empire who are also the greatest blacksmiths on the continent and have an gender egalitarian society (Skyrim would later retcon this away by portraying them as having a weird animalistic incestuous alpha male harem system but whatever)
>>
>>744622749
Skyrim also had Orc armor be ugly and uruk-like instead of pretty and ornate like in Morrowind and Oblivion, and correct if I'm wrong but it was also lower tier than in the previous two games, when it was like mid-game armor.
>>
>>744622749
>a weird animalistic incestuous alpha male harem system
To be fair Orsinium was sacked again so it's a bunch of them living in isolated fortresses. I know ESO isn't liked but their rendition of Orsinium and the whole Trinimac thing ended up really good. It and the Clockwork City are series high points.
>>
>>744503013
I just stick to Caius house because it's nice having a roomie, and eventually he just gives you the house anyway and you're already living there.
>>
>>744625421
Orsinium in ESO stands out because it's the only ESO plotline that isn't a fucking daedric cult nonsense. I guess the Breton one too but Bretons are boring.
>>
Why is it that I can play Daggerfall for 100+ hours and have fun with it, but with Morrowind, I get so horribly lost that I just wander aimlessly. I don't want to be a brainlet and have questmarkers. I understand how brainlet they are. But at the same time, if you didn't join the boyscouts as a child and learn map reading in the old days, your sense of direction is fucked and you absolutely need a giant arrow telling you were the fuck to go.

I say this as someone who goes to the bathroom at an airport on the way to their terminal who then exits and gets turned around.
>>
>>744626719
Morrowind has mechanics you really have to interact with. Daggerfall, on the other hand, is closer to Skyrim and Bethesda’s later games, with endless radiant quests and fast travel, and generally requires less thinking and playing. Quest markers are just a small part of what sets these games apart, you could add them to Morrowind and it wouldn't really change much.

Just finished the game for the first time playing basically this, but without the bound armor. Mostly just speared and clubbed stuff, but I enchanted my armor for magic pew-pews while speeding around with Blinding Speed boots and amulet of levitation. Would have been more fun if I had a better grasp of the enchanting system and how to make the most of the game's spells.

>>744627296
Well yeah that Morrowind stuff was made by MK, who actually studied ancient religions in college and shit and thus had a very good grasp of what religions and mythologies are actually like, while Ithelia was likely designed by a bunch of generic digital artists and dime a dozen writers from reddit whose mains references were nu-DnD and World of Warcraft and the like.

Apparently they'll be giving Vivec they/them pronouns in all future dialogue, which is strange given how in-game dialogue refers to him with male pronouns exclusively. Some people are talking about a trans character. And there's a lesbian married couple in that Bal Foyen quest.

Aside from that last thing, all of this is just talk, I didn't open the dev build in the construction kit yet to check, and I'd rather not make any judgments until I see the final release.
