Not that it really matters, but just in case anyone looked at the previous survey results this morning and was wondering how the fuck 3.69% to 4.01% is only +0.02%, it isn't. They fucked up the survey page again. The difference column is comparing July against May, not against June, so the +0.02% for Linux is wrong (and so are all the other +/- numbers). I went from Windows 10 to Mint on both my desktop and laptop because I got tired of Microsoft's bullshit and figured they'd enshittify 10 to make people "upgrade" to 11. It's dumb that I to have to fend off system updates cause they're dogshit that makes my computer worse.

Over time I found the limitations of Mint, which has an awful Wayland kernel and I wanted something better. So I switched to CachyOS on my desktop and Fedora on my laptop. Both run great now, I'm pretty happy.

I pity those still stuck on Windows. Linux really isn't that complicated. I wonder how far Microsoft will descend before more people switch out of it.

Yeah, only for a percentage of games. For others you run into issues that don't happen on Windows and are expected to just have the ProtonDB bookmarked so you can check it every single time you want to play a game. And even with le tinkering there's problems that you just can't get around sometimes, such as how Steam workshop and modding in general is VERY janky on Linux. Enjoy having to basically play Russian Roulette every single time you want to connect to a community server because they may have mods installed that just don't work on Linux.

Both branches of OS have their own problems and challenges, but Windows has been in free fall since the late 2000s, whereas Linux has gotten actually functional support and development.
It is not unrealistic to say that Linux and Windows passed each other on the usability spectrum going in opposite directions back in 2018 and have only gotten farther apart since.
There is no perfect dream OS that is perfectly suited to your needs out of the box unless you do actual research to find out what your needs are and what is available, but Linux is more likely to be closer to it unless you have years of sunk cost into Windows and the catastrophic releases after 7 haven't scared you off since.

terminal actually isn't used that much if you used a beginner distro, you have a GUI for everything already set up but worst case you ask some LLM what command to run to do what and it's shockingly reliable (except for that one time it bricked my OS, lmao)

the biggest thing I'd say is you WILL eventually have a moment when your GPU driver dies. Happened to me once when I had a power outage as I was updating. It's nothing you can't recover from, you have to boot in terminal only and install them again through there, but that'll be the moment where you need to be able to handle the command line

Windows is having the most standard popular car with camera recording and spying on you nonstop "for safety" but all things you do is also accessible by the authorities with mandatory AI "helping" you and the performance in general is questionable, but you don't need to fix it yourself ever. Tho you need to clean it up all the time because it gets bloated all the time. Customizing it is surface level and disabling some stuff is against TOS, while the manufacturer can disable features if they want. I rather not have an experience like that. And dual booting defeats the point imo, I would end up just using Windows nonstop because stuff works for me and if I have to just switch nonstop to do all the important stuff on it anyway. What would I even use Linux for if I risk my drivers dying on it as well.
If you just game some stuff that works on Linux and chat, then sure. But if you do work and need to switch between OS all the time and wrangle with files then staying on Windows is just easier.

I haven't used my windows boot in years at this point, still there if I ever need to use it but I haven't had the need. I do all my work/coding/video editing etc on linux and it works no problem. it just boils down to you not wanting to switch which is completely fine but what you listed aren't real barriers. There is no issue on linux which windows cannot have either, I've had GPU drivers die when I used windows as well, but I am giving that they are more robust on windows (price to pay for you being able to do whatever you like with your machine vs windows)

I switched not so long ago to cachyos. I am liking it, games gemeraly runs better and smoother compared to win 10 ltsc, no trouble with my gtx 1660 and so far the only game I found that doesn't really work properly without tinkering is Helen's Mysterious Castle.
