Well that explains the quality of recent Nintendo games

Who cares

he doesnt even make games anymore so who cares?
>>
Yeah the decline in quality is very noticeable, I think it started midway through the switch lifetime.

I only got a S2 to move my games over
I dont expect to buy any new games outside fire emblem and xenoblade and maybe the next 2D metroid

>buying 80 dollar fire emblem
You should hurry up & die so the rest of us can start getting good games again

it's because Nintendo died with Iwata. That man was irreplaceable.
>>
>>744525567
I'd say it began around 2011 or so.
>>
>>744525567
success breeds complacency
why try to make something good when you know that you've got millions of manchildren that'll buy your products for themselves, a copy for their children, and then every "special edition" you put out?
the modern nintendo era started with BotW, that game proved to them that they can get away with making generic slop since their primary fanbase doesnt care if a franchise has been ruined or not.

>>744525249
???
You said Miyamoto went to work on the theme park mines. Why is it still his fault about the current state of Nintendo toys?

He probably created a culture of non-games people LARPing as him. Which is why nintendo are now struggling to make worthwhile games again, and why they're now using the BOTW template for everything (outsourcing game design to the players)

All of Miyamoto's best games use gameplay ideas established before they came out.
At some point Miyamoto got convinced that the background knowledge of games he was using to build his hits "didn't count" and his actual strength was how little he knew about gaming.
Dragon Quest came out only a few months after The Legend of Zelda. At the time, they were seen as incredibly similar games. Both were directly inspired by Ultima and Wizardry on a gameplay level. But these days, Miyamoto swears up and down that the only part of his experiences that mattered to developing Zelda was the real life childhood experiences he was trying to portray, and the gameplay just sort of emerged from the ether.
tl;dr: Not even Miyamoto himself is better off not being passionate about gaming, why would a rando hired in 2026 be better off not being passionate about gaming?
>>
>>744528150
>All of Miyamoto's best games use gameplay ideas established before they came out.
Pikmin was his best game and was wholly unique.
But yeah, he's a solid case of Losing The Plot, which i wonder what the japanese term is.

The people who made the company and made it great were people who werent Nintendo game fanatics
>>
>>744528397
In 1980 someone who weren't particular attached to gaming had a broader perspective of what games could be than a gaming superfan.
In 2020, these roles have reversed. People who don't really like games have a narrow and stereotypical view of what they are and can be, a superfan knows that technology has developed in every direction so hard that almost nothing short of true responsive AI is impossible.

People are mistaken about Nintendo, they think it's this based company that only cares about making fun games when in reality Nintendo is simply a decade behind industry trends and cancers, their games have been pretty bad recently because they caught up with the open world meme and now they also caught up with remake culture, they even put millennial writing in Metroid which was a big trend around 2020 but something the industry has slowly been moving away from.

This headline is trying to make a connection between two entirely separate things that are presented out of context to paint a picture that doesn’t reflect reality
>myamoto says he doesn’t play games anymore
The context that’s left out is that he doesn’t play them anymore because he’s too busy to, not that he doesn’t like them anymore. He still plays with his grandkids when they ask
>nintendo doesn’t hire passionate game fans
Complete misrepresentation. It's not that they don’t hire game fans, it’s that they want employee’s who are more than just game fans so they can bring something unique to the table than being derivative. Obviously they want their devs to actually like the work they do
None of these statements presented are accurate to what was actually stated and they have no relation between each other, but the author wants you to think so cause its implications are much more eye-catching and click-inducing. What miyamoto does personally on his own time has 0 bearing on how nintendo operates
>>
>>744528812
Also keep in mind that before Nintendo got into video games they were largely a company in the business of selling chintzy toys, so in around 1980 the company was full of people good at that and as it turned out a toy designer mentality in that time period was conducive to experimentation and innovative game design.

>>
>>744531223
>It's not that they don’t hire game fans, it’s that they want employee’s who are more than just game fans
That's the same thing. Making a game doesn't require you to enjoy video games at all, in fact it's easier if you don't personally enjoy video games because you aren't even trying to satisfy your own standards, just the design spec you were given. When you make an original contribution it probably isn't something actually new or interesting, it's likely something that was done already, and you're just unaware because you don't really play games.
The Miyamoto of old played games without his grandchildren asking him to, and used the gameplay ideas he was exposed to to develop his own games. Because he LIKED games.
>>
>>744531453
then say that instead of coming off as a salty botw contrarian.

He only led Nintendo through their most nostalgiafagging and safeslopping second act as a leading game corporation after the golden NES->N64 era of the company. The thing about it is that he was the type of CEO who held on to his own decisions and not doing only stuff taken from advisors, which I think the current CEO is doing as a banking/finance moron. But that doesn't mean Iwata is super unique or anything like that. He was a more entrepreneurial guy. I've worked with both types of bosses myself, where there was a CEO clash and the board ultimately ended up in favor of the Iwata-esque guy, because we were failing and the more finance/aggressive guy was always talking about "Muh shortsighted plan" as if it was a good thing, and they just needed something different, so they listened to the other guy who was like "Long-sighted plan, do it my way!" etc.

Nintendo is just one rotation away from getting a CEO who has a vision for the company instead of this fucking banking/financializing cabal that's sitting on the company nowadays. Yamauchi ran it like a family business. Iwata ran it to champion that without the family business head there anymore. Shuntaro just runs it like a bank.
It's probably why they had such good ties with Ubisoft. Family businesses sticking close to each other. Literally all they need is a leadership change where they take a gamble on a different kind of guy. I think the catalyst to get there is that Nintendo needs to well and truly fail for a while. Either they'll try to go private again, or they'll find someone who "does it differently". That's usually how it goes, and the only reason that's not happening right now is because their business is going well, all things considered.
>>
>>744531537
Non-gamers make much worse developers. Look at Nintendo, they're convinced making every possible genre and IP "more open world" will improve them, that's because their devs don't play games and don't know every fucking company already went through this phase to disastrous results.
>>
>>744531801
Why would someone saying Nintendo's gotten worse recently be a BOTW contrarian? Are you implying it's contrarian to dislike the open world game with four dungeons?
>>
>>744531474
botw and odyssey were high quality games. you can find reasons to handwring about them but they weren't a reflection of the bottom falling out of nintendo's talent.
>>
>>744531918
BotW was made by people who know so little about games they can't tell how 3D Zelda ever evoked a sense of adventure. It shows. The parts of it that can be called high quality are mostly the technical parts they stole Monolithsoft to make work. Everything about it that tries to be "Zelda" is subpar.
>>
>>744531212
>They all look like classic nerds

>>744531817
What I mean is that a good workaholic or a highly analytical or disciplined person typically does a lot better than either a gamer or a casual non-gamer that wants to "try video games".

A huge reason for soullessness other than size is that the last 15 years of fostering talent, especially in California, and parts of the EU, has been done through more and more institutionalized knowledge, where thousands of students are taught the same idiotic design patterns and content methods before they enter a game studio. Companies always look for staying up to date. It's one of the reasons why EA went GaaS. Yes, it's lucrative, but at the time "Software as a Service" was being touted as the new black, so in computer science and game design classes we also started seeing this rush of "How to make Microservices!" and "How to make Enterprises". You had to always do "business analyses" where I went. As much as the campus tried to specialize the courses as "game development" it was ultimately a degree that fell under regular "Software development", so because software itself was moving towards a lot more cloud-bullshit, "service-oriented" design, it made sense that all the newest (and cheapest) talent to recruit had to be attracted on those kinds of things. Couple that with moronic game design classes that has raised an army of ""UX'ers"" who only know how to make the God of War 2018 HUD design, or in Japan the "Yellow paint" disease, that's how you get here.

It's got less to do with Nintendo, and more to do with how many people flock to games, and how many normies just learn the regular path to design, whereas in the 80s and 90s there were no verified lessons -- people were self-taught and only the most skilled people actually made it through data science studies etc, and found their own "language" with computers.

That's kinda what's wrong. Nintendo is too established, and the source of talent has to be whoever is on the up-and-up.
>>
i wish nintendo would give up with their exclusivity bubble crap so that i could play raiders on PC.
im not paying 600 dollars to play one game.
>>
>>744531879
>Why would someone saying Nintendo's gotten worse recently be a BOTW contrarian?
he said last several generations which implies going back that far and shitting on their marquee game.
>Are you implying it's contrarian to dislike the open world game with four dungeons?
I'm implying it's delusional to think your personal distaste is a reflection of nintendo losing their touch with that game. they entered a genre and immediately delivered arguably the most fun, polished entry in its history.
>>
>>744525249
This worked maybe 30 years ago when there was a lot of things that havent been done yet but nowadays? Someone who has a certain degree of experience with games should be able to tell when the gameplay sucks or menus are idiotic.
>>
>>744532137
Funny, I thought PC gamers were rich and money was never an issue.
>>
Yeah, that's a good thing. You don't want to hire gamers. You want to hire talented programmers and designers and planners
>>
An engineer who creates the architecture for bank backends will be 100x of a better programmer than a "gaming enthusiast" who picked up Unity.
>>
>>744532289
money isnt an issue because i dont spend money like a retard, such as not spending 600 dollars to play a single game.
>>
>>744532127
>A huge reason for soullessness other than size is that the last 15 years of fostering talent, especially in California, and parts of the EU, has been done through more and more institutionalized knowledge
This, I agree with wholeheartedly. But I think anyone who can go through even one "game design" class without wanting to tear their eyes out isn't really much of a gamer. If you played a decent quantity of games, and had even a bit of a brain, you'd be able to remember exceptions to every design rule you were taught in class. And unlike painting or sketching where there are rules that you have to learn before you learn to break them, these rules are taught as authoritative, that you should never break them no matter how much personal experience you have. Basically, a gamer with the brain for game development would never take a game design class with more than a grain of salt. Only a non-gamer might.
>>
>>744531817
>Look at Nintendo, they're convinced making every possible genre and IP "more open world" will improve them
Shinya Takahashi is partly to blame, but I believe ever since Breath of the Wild Nintendo has been changed into a corporation that primarily has a "notes from above" system, where it's not Miyamoto or the "Creative Fellows" that pass down ideas anymore, but the "Business & Market Research" group which run it like EA, with lots of focus groups, "risk-aversion" and they CONSTANTLY go like "Hey, Minecraft!" and "...Like Minecraft!"
It's like that story about one of the early BioWare devs that quit EA, because he wanted to make new IP and presented a really creative project to the board, and their literal reaction was
>We're looking to make a Facebook game. Can you make that work?
And he just quit because of that interaction, realizing it's that kind of company.
And Nintendo is sorta becoming the same now. They clearly have some hyper financialized department calling the shots now. Just look at every fucking game they make having either Minecraft, Roblox or Fortnite callbacks in it. Even Donkey Kong (which is otherwise quite good) feels way too Minecraft-adjacent, and this doesn't come just because there's developers who are really enthusiastic about it. It comes from people looking at statistics and saying "If Minecraft sells this much, why the fuck is our company not trying to make those kinds of games!!?!" and then Shinya Takahashi has to tell that to the EAD groups.
That's also why I can't really stand Breath of the Wild. It's not "magical" to me. It just smells like Nintendo having to take the first notes from above, and putting up with it, but because it seemed so "Un-Nintendo" at the time, people were over the moon with it.
>>
>>744525567
Bananza was very good imo. Splatoon Raiders fell flat with the post game, I think a big issue with modern Nintendo is that they are designing their games to be played in bitesized chunks way too often. They're catering too hard to ADHD kids at a base level, even with Bananza it's made with being able to play for 3 minutes and getting a banana in mind. Splatoon Raiders is all 3 to 5 minute stages, I get that the Switch is designed as a portable but it's getting out of hand.

Idk, I occasionally got fed up with the core game programming/design courses I took and I've played at least 200 games from start to finish in my life, and developed a very strict and strong taste. Yeah, you took the game design you learned there with a grain of salt, right? Because they occasionally taught you shit that you could point to direct counter-examples of that were good and maybe even successful. This is exactly what I'm talking about: Only people who aren't really into gaming can go through those courses and come out thoughtlessly parroting the design ideas they were taught.
Man, Hearthstone used to be such a big thing. What even is the current digital card game? There is one, right? There can't not be.

I've noticed that when Western teams consist of or bring in a lot of non-gamers, the product gets a LOT worse. The best Western games from the past five years are made by teams that love vidya and take inspiration from many games particularly Japanese (E33, BG3, Hi Fi Rush etc.)

but when Japanese dev teams bring in people who are total outsiders, the game ends up being unexpected, bold and fresh kino. I mean your Itois, Miyazakis, Keita Takahashis (studied sculpture and lost passion for it and then did art for Namco until he pitched Katamari), etc.
There is a lot potential in "outsider enters industry and makes art channeling their life experiences", it's how the medium evolves, but the West always puts the wrong people in charge for this at least at bigger studios.

The old geezer that was running Nintendo before Iwata understood how to cultivate a workforce that could create interesting and popular games even though he never liked games himself and even saw it as a massive waste of time.

His vision was essentially:
>Hire people with skills that wouldn't get them a job anywhere else
>Cultivate their skills and give them what they need (not necessarily what they want) in order to keep improving and staying focused
>Give them a reason to stick around that isn't just based on the paycheck they get at the end of the month
>Start recruiting people who have no fucking clue what they are doing (essentially blank slates) but that show a willingness to learn and improve
>Be extremely aggressive towards competition and try to outmaneuver them as cheaply and smartly as possible
>Look for talent where others wouldn't
>Trust your employees to handle everything work related while you steer the company away from large blunders
>Be hard but fair, never back down but never be afraid to admit fault if your proven wrong, let people prove you wrong

Essentially, Pre-Boomer CEOs actually knew how to run a company for longer than a few years at a time and put more devotion towards the companies mission statement and employees than its financials.

"Super passionate game fans" in Japan only care about gacha and fantasy slop. They need people who see value in Mario etc to make games otherwise they would never be made. If the super passionate game fans took control of Nintendo it would make nothing but Xenoblade, Fire Emblem, and Kirby.

Miyamoto isn't doing shit anymore and hasn't for a while so him playing games or not hasn't really anything to do with the games quality.

He is too busy doing paperwork management stuff and focuses on Nintendos growing movie business. Only occasionally you have Nintendo devs approach him going "Oh great Miyamoto sensei we wanna do X can you give us your valuable input - we value your opinion more than anyone elses"
And thats when he actually plays a bit and gives feedback.

Knowing nothing about your medium just makes you produce something based on second- and third-hand impressions of it you've picked up elsewhere. Ask a random normalfag to make a video game and they'll produce something flagrantly based on either a recently popular game or an old stereotype. The key isn't to ignore your medium, it's to engage in it enough to understand the "whys" and not just the "whats".

The key issue I find with game developers is that anyone good at it falls under two extremes:
>tech literate and does the code grind; absolutely dogshit sense of taste in looks and appearances
>bad at tech related tasks; good sense of aesthetics and even knows how to use artistic expression to elevate things

Writing for either of them can be decent to hot garbage but they consistently fall within the first or second group.

Yup. Its also why conversation is so autistic, because the thing is just not popular anywhere else. It doesn't sell in America, doesn't sell in Europe. And this was before they even upped the price of the console. Honestly, software probably played a big part of it besides price. The Switch 2 lineup is mediocre, there are games that appeal to certain subsets. I hear Raiders is good, allegedly. And you see Nintendo fans brow beat their chests when the game is on the top of charts for like one week, like Star Fox 64 remake.

I think this will only change when Wind and Waves drops. That might be the second most bought game on the system, could even dethrone World if they play it properly. I could even see it giving the system a big bump. Pokemon is always in high demand.

People ITT are fucking stupid. The era of innovation in the 80s and 90s happened because people came to game development from different fields with life experience unrelated to vidya. Miyamoto wanted to be a cartoonist, Koizumi came to Nintendo fresh from film school, Kojima had a background in film, etc. For a recent example you even have Miyazaki coming from finance or something. Getting people with passion's outside vidya is important. A big issue with contemporary vidya, and other creative mediums like anime, is that the people creating now are largely only into vidya and little else. It's why gaming is pretty stagnant now, it's mostly all navel gazing now. A snake eating its tail.

i am sick of this stupid ass blatantly wrong shit constantly being parroted. its not just not true, but its completely opposite to reality. exceptions aside (since i know people will bring it up), the vast majority of the time, NOT being a gamer actually helps. you need to be objective and study games and deconstruct them. being a gamer has absolutely very little to do with it. in fact, you would probably have a higher chance of having someone being a better game dev who has never played a single second of games before, but has strong analytical skills and a strong work ethic than someone who has played tens of thousands of hours and his a worthless piece of shit.

Some of the best games in history were made by people who knew fuckall about game design. Granted, it was during the time the industry was still fairly new, but you get the point.

Anyway, is anyone surprised that a nearly 80 year old man isn't playing videogames anymore? Frankly I can't be mad about Shiggy just enjoying whatever time left he has on this earth watching his creations come to the big screen and theme parks, he must feel like it's a dream come true.
