The Weird Emptiness of GTA Vice City
>>744538063that's the sims 3
>>744538063LETS GET HOT TONIGHT
>>744538183Yeah, the real map has much more empty space.
>>744538398but you can clearly see the sims 3 version is more emptywhat in the fuck are you trying to do here
Vice City was made in 1 year it launched almost exactly a year after 3.
How A Single Road In GTA Gave Me An Existential Crisis
>Do the manhole covers of Vice City comply with Miami regulations circa 1985?
>>744538398Every time I see the entire map of an old game fully rendered I wish some devs would just work within a similar framework and take advantage of modern tech to completely fill out all the usually decorative areas; make an office building with all the floors, resorts with all the amenities, every home with an interior. I wouldn't even care if they did a lot of copy and pasting environments that were completely empty, or loading into an entirely separate map. But it must be possible in current year, and surely functional if limited to previous generations of graphical fidelity. I know almost everyone who saw a big fuck off building on a map wanted to check out what was inside.
>>744539875The Hitman reboot is this, albeit they don't do every random house in the city levels.
>>744538063>Mainland>just another island
>>744540970that's all the 3D games
I do think it's funny that the GTA world takes place in like, a Caribbean-ized united states. You think the country is made up of 50 islands?
>>7445380635 and SA have a lot more weird empty spots. VC, 3 and 4 are the best because they're all city.
>>744539875Arc raiders is basically this
>>744539875I used to think that way, too, until I started to realize that hardware advancements don't allow for that.Even with graphics from the 2000s, if you put a lot of different assets and a lot of NPCs all in the same scene, the engines can't handle it, and the frame rate plummets.
>>744542669Smart engine and map development and SSDs would make it possible, but attention to detail is never rewarded. Shitty aaa slop popular instead. Just look at all Nintendo games as an example of lazily made aaa slop.
>>744538063if your game has a mall that can be entered, it's an automatic 10/10
>>744538063>>744538398lego island esque
>>744538063Seriously how did they go from 3 and this to SA over like 3 years? How the fuck did they improve that much that fast?

>>744538063I'm playing Just Cause 2 for the first time, and this map is fucking colossal in size compared to anything I've seen in a Grand Theft Auto game.

I played VC for the first time a week or so ago and I was impressed by the lack of load times, then I went across the bridge for the first time and was like ahhh there they are
They're just videogame maps back when a gamedev team was like ten dudes in their twenties
>>744543341Youth and passion
>>744546898It's not Thursday Anon you can't say shit like that.
Still somehow the best GTA
Who among you remembers having to wait for the other islands to load when crossing the bridge?
>>744539875For fucking WHAT
>>744543341What the other guy said but also: No need to support online service, no DLC, no new engine, no mass firing and rebuilding a team, no years of cajoling with marketing, no careful negotiation to get scuggin mcguggins, famous LA pedophile to voice the main character. No touring the city and taking 20,000 photos so you can scan them in to the game: Just fucking make the next game with the same tools.
>>744547357I miss renderware so fucking much.

The liminal existentalism of portland beach
>>744539875>>744542669you could easily make all the buildings enterable in a modern game of this scale, but modeling all the floors like the other anon suggested is too much. Just have a few room enterable and the rest locked behind doors or something. Lots of way around loading all the assets at once, and lots of way to create an illusion of an interior from windows too>>744547307for fun in your sandbox game
>>744547897how do they get to the lighthouse does the lighthouserman jump from the nearby rock or
>>744538063t.
>>744538063>GTA 3 was the only game geographically connected to a larger landmass making it feel part of the rest of the world>the other games are just islands floating in a endless ocean
>>744548627flying ruins everything
>>744546725Yes, Just Cause 2 map was incredible.Empty but HUGEI remember I used a mod to fly fast like superman, it felt amazing.
>>744538063i dont get 30+ year olds obsession with games like vc, hl2, bf etc. i watch speedrun vids for games like this and sa but never got why they matter so much to ppl. hl2 for example is mostly filler and i had to use guides for the puzzles...dont get what all the hype is ab. i personally got so much more fun out of fn or even growing up with rb....but playing 25 year old games in the big 2026 is diabolical lmao
>>744549132damn bruh this post cooked
>>744548275There's a dock at the base of the lighthouse, as used in the LCS mission "the Sicilian gambit"
>>744549530LCS is not canon.
>>744549132>hl2>i had to use guides for the puzzlesHAHAHAHhahahahaha you're legit on the down syndrome spectrum, just stick with modern vidya
>>744549215>>744549703Don't feed the trolls, retards.
>>744549132Uncs have some unhinged nostalgia for HL2, it's an awfully boring and mediocre fps.
>>744538063I'm so tired of gta games being islands. it makes no sense. bring back invisible walls
>744551663>invisible walls make more sense than islands which are plentiful on the planet in which we live(You) don't get a (You)
>>744547306I remember on psp
>>744547131And crunch
>>744541823it's a Ludonarrative dissonancecanonically GTA's united states is just like ours but warped and renamed. They're all islands so the map feels more free and open instead of having to deal with out of bounds terrain
>>744549132of course it’s hard to get if you weren't there, anon. Times were just so much slower back then.I remember playing HL1 back in elementary school and it felt like an absolute odyssey. It felt like it took me months to beat (no idea how long it actually was, though). To me, it was this mind-blowing game with insane graphics, haha. And I still remember being in high school around 2003 when the HL2 tech demo came out. Seeing the water reflections, the metal textures, and how the physics engine worked completely blew my mind. But yeah, it was a time when game-changing tech didn't drop every single day. So when HL2 finally released, it was an incredible experience.
>>744549132Plus, one big reason why us 30+ old fucks love revisiting our old games is that you get to re-experience places that are still virtually identical to how they were when you first explored them. It's like listening to a song from your childhood that instantly teleports you back in time. But with games, it feels even more intense, at least for me.
>>744541823>>744555210Just make GTA 7 (the final one) in Hawaii. It's an island chain that has a very big (but dense) main city and plenty of open and empty land that they love to put in their games. Plus there's still plenty of fictional shit to rip from (Hawaii 5-0 , Magnum PI) and there's surprisingly more gangs than just Triades and Yakuzas. Especially now. Fucking spic cartels keep moving in
>>744546374Someone once ported a fully playable version of VC to browsers, but you can figure it out what happened to it
>>744549592where did you get that? It is canon
>>744538063NOOOOOOOOOOO WHERE'S THE GIANT EMPTY DESERT ROADS AND THE HUMONGOUS FEATURELESS MOUNTAIN PLOPPED IN THE MIDDLE?????
>>744549132>hl2 for example is mostly filler and i had to use guides for the puzzles.
>dense map you actually use with distinct designversus>fuck huge wasteland with entire sections you'll only ever be in so you can rubberband a controller to level up your THUG HUNTER skill, which ends up poisoning every subsequent open world game afterwardsChoose wisely gamer
>>744539875Saints Row 2 felt like a step in this direction. You couldn't go in every building, but you could go in a lot of them.
>>744538063I forgot, was the airport the kind of place where you instantly get max wanted level for simply walking in there?
>finally get Vice City on VR>Modder panics and gets rid of itDAMN IThttps://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/1vd1i00/gta_vice_city_standalone_on_quest_3/
>>744561974only the quest 3 build it seems, the PC version is still available apparently
>>744555764Yep, it's like a time capsule and a simulation. Especially the soulful games because, yeah, we had a lot of shit even back then, and not all of them have enough soulful value to be really worth replaying unless you're autistic. Games are better at what you mentioned compared to songs, movies, etc. because they have everything those mediums have plus interaction and freedom to play it in new ways. Take, for example, models in a game: when you watch a movie, you can't look at the costumes up close and immerse yourself in the artistic zeitgeist of that time, but in video games, you can.
>>744538398I want to be tricked like this again, I want to feel how huge this map is even if its actually tiny.
>>744556932Crazy how depressing Honolulu is when the rest of the island is cozy as fuck

>>744543892>https://noclip.website/pretty cool website anon, almost lost myself for hours there, thank you
>>744543892damn the TF2 maps are crazy accurate, and it's all running on three.js too.
>>744561443That's the military base, north of the airport. The airport would give you a wanted level in SA if you managed to get inside before getting a flight license.
>>744563718every US state capital is like thatlook at Sacramento and Jackson
>>744565319Nope, the airports in SA were pretty easy to break into without a license by just climbing the fence from the roof of a car, I did it all the time and never got any wanted level. You only got wanted level for flying or swimming to a city you hadn't unlocked yet
>mfw the size of San Andreas is just your typical Cities Skyline build

>>744538398That looks bigger than I remember
>>744538063It's a PS2 game. Nothing weird about it, zoomo.
>>744538063The airport just takes up too much space despite never being relevant to story or gameplay
>>744568051that's a lot of people
>>744539875I remember when GTA4 was being hyped as having every building be enterable what a load of bullshit that turned out to be.
>>744549132Please learn how to write
>>744538063yes when you remove all npcs and vehicles and and anything that moves it kinda sorta looks empty
>>744538063I played it on release and nobody ever said it felt empty. Sure it's empty comlared to games today where most of the open world is just fluff and there's 30 cars on the screen and 100 pedestrians. You have to understand that HD era GTA games' world maps were giant mission levels. Most of the locations were like battle maps. If you've seen a location, there was a mission taking place there sooner or later. I've seen Pretzel videos on games like CP2077 where the city is gigantic, but that means there's no reason even to look at most buildings some dev spent hours if not days working on. If you've played VC more than once, you know most of the buildings by heart. Those rundown manors? The gangsters are inside. Movie studio? You go there for missions and the Dodo plane. That rooftop with a small helicopter. That warehouse in between buildings where you fight Haitians. Harbor where you have speedboats spawn. Vercetti estate? You have the white sports car and heli there. Garbage dump? Garbage truck, second thing best to a tank. That hangar thing? Phil sells miniguns. Pizza shop, Golf course, disco, ice cream warehouse, need I say more?
>>744538063I remember ride the motorbike on the beach
>>744538063I like the long empty beach
>>744538398I like that they placed some rocks into the ocean
>>744548891I like how they just crammed in every possible biome just because they could.
>>744568320What she said
>>744538063How much content and interactivity could Rockstar or another developer include in a modern game with a map this size? It sounds like the perfect combination.
>>744541914Except there's fucking nothing in the actual maps because they're hiding behind the background plot of "It's post apocalyptic and only like 20 dudes go to the surface in a given area at once because of all the killer robots"If it was an actual game and not extraction sloppa it would have so much more potential
>>744548891>I remember I used a mod to fly fast like superman, it felt amazing.Oof, I had that mod and the Smallville skin and flied through the clouds. It was awesome. So many cool mods for it.
>>744561250Steelport felt so lifeless compared to stilwater.
>>744538063for me it's the map edges, they're always weird
>>744538063They made the game in like 9 months. Zoomers simply cannot imagine getting three GTA games in one console generation.
>>744583741More like 5 if you count LCS and VCS. Those and GTA IV all happened within the same decade btw.
>>744543048All Dead Risings, please stand up
>>744546725Now imagine how insane it looked to people way back in 2010.

>>744539875this, I don't need every single building to be accessible but I wish more games did something like yakuza where you have a small area but it's detailed with signs showing what company/restaurant is on each floor or restaurants having menus displayed in front of them etc, makes it more lively and soulful than forgettable anonymous shit like gta 5 city
