Well, clearly your character didn't. And that's just how reality works: sometimes, rarely, once in a blue moon, in fast time control games, under time pressure, mouse slipping, when distracted, whatever, Magnus Carlsen hangs queens or misses mates-in-one, and a skillful player would build robustness to their plans. Not in that came, though, since d20 system is trash (extreme outlier events are as likely as any other, the most extreme outlier events allowed by the system, happen "routinely", dice are big compared to modifiers, etc, etc) and "serious" RPGs tend to use different kinds of mechanics (such as dice pooling and opposed rolls) with more desirable properties.

yeah it's really just a matter of self control, which is easily done at least for me. I can't imagine playing something like Disco Elysium with quicksave brain on, some of my favorite bits of the game are from me failing a roll. I laughed the hardest when I tried to strongarm the Pissfaggot jacket guy into handing over his jacket, but failed the roll and had an emotional breakdown in front of the two and made the guy feel so bad he gave me the jacket anyway. BG3 doesn't really do a good job at making failed rolls feel worthwhile though, usually just starts the fight you were trying to skip.

Strangely enough, what I hate about 5e is how everybody uses it for roleplay but the way it handles RP is fucking awful. It's actually really good (in my opinion) at nice, prolonged combat and forcing players to manage resources and think about positioning - but good luck finding a table that focuses on that.
>>
>>744538441
tabletop mechanics on a digital medium is objectively obsolete and dogshit, and a sign that the devs are lazy hacks and the players troons

>high ground
>enemy tripped due to grease
>still a 88% chance to hit with a 18 strength character using a proficient weapon
>most cantrips are like 80% at best to hit with a monstrous variance in damage even if you land it

Levels 1-4 in the game are actually horrible. You and the enemy spend 33% of the time missing one another. The combat is actually random chance before you get the second attack at level 5. You are just way too inaccurate and shit before level 5. I can't believe it's supposed to be like it.
>>
>>744552651
>noooo! I can't just stack buffs and auto-win every encounter
the mechanic exists to address a very real issue with casters scaling beyond retardation after like level 6, although I feel like it could allow maybe your spell modifier number of spells at the same time to allow a little bit more flexibility
>>
>>744554501
As much as this is true, I don't find it much of a problem because you can so easily turn every early encounter to your complete advantage. You'll get to level 4 before anything scary happens.
>>
>>744554501
Use Command to get the Demon on the Nautiloid to drop his sword and then Lae'zel can solo pretty much any encounter you run into until level 5. But ignoring that most encounters are so weak or have such a clear solution to beat them it's rarely an issue. The only really dangerous moment on high difficulty is the Windmill fight because their leader has a nude in a bottle.

By creating an even bigger issue of making the game even more rewarding to have multiple casters in your party instead of everyone playing something they actually want to play. It's very easy to acquire secondary casting in 5e and doing so is more effective than not doing so. There is an argument to be had about it being on your own head if your table wishes to powergame, which I would like to reapply to the issue they were trying to solve (and failed) to begin with.

>any instance of even 1 damage can easily interrupt the spell
This is a good thing, we should go back to when mages announced the spell at the beginning of the turn and if they got hit during the turn they would automatically lose the spells with no rolls.

the problem with RNG in games is that video games, by their nature, are even in the most "open-ended" of circumstances extremely constrained by the limited options the developers programmed into them

in an ideal scenario the Dungeon Master, being a human consciousness existing in real-time, is able to improvise on the fly or at least have backups for various potential outcomes CYOA-style, and thus critical successes or critical failures, or any dice roll at all, can become a unique, creative, and entertaining artificial metric of interaction and narrative

any and all video games are ultimately a yes/no binary of whether you progress (win) or not (lose), and even the RPGs with the most "consequences" programmed in are still extremely restricted by the effort the devs were willing to put into multiple outcome options, especially due to the cascading effects of choices downstream
which incidentally, is why choices in RPGs never, ever, EVER matter - there are far too many variables for game devs to plan ahead for so all "multiple choice" games are invariably "pick ending A, B, or C in the last 5 minutes"

this is why RNG in video games are boring and bad
>>
>>744555746
>Hunters mark
Ranger got fucking violated in 5E man. 5.5E didn't even fix the fucking problem.
>>
>>744557632
that doesn't actually explain why RNG is bad according to you
>>
>>744557795
RNG in video games becomes an unnecessary artificial hurdle for the player to struggle against instead of an actual random element. You're playing red-light green-light with whether you actually get to do something or not. If I want to hit someone with my sword, generally speaking the only options are I succeed and do damage, or fail and do no damage. If the computer decides I don't get to win, then I simply don't win - my only choice is to reload a save, and if I'm going to have to reload saves every time the computer acts like a shit anyway, I may as well save scum until all my rolls are perfect. There is no sane incentive to deal with shitty dice rolls unless you're a masochist.

In real games - that is, tabletop games - the RNG is a real mechanic that can be worked around to any given player or GM's advantage or entertainment. If I roll a D20 and get a 1, in a video game that simply means I eat shit - you do no damage against your enemy or your enemy does lots of damage against you; in a tabletop game that means the GM says "you accidentally chop your own ear off, roll D10 for constitution", you roll a 10 and the GM says "you stick the ear back onto your bloody stump and grit your teeth through the pain as you prepare to swing again"
In a video game, if your character dies, that's game over. In a TTG if your character dies, you roll an entirely new one who joins the party like Eomer entering the scene in the Two Towers after Boromir is killed.
>>
>>744558306
>in a tabletop game that means the GM says "you accidentally chop your own ear off, roll D10 for constitution", you roll a 10 and the GM says "you stick the ear back onto your bloody stump and grit your teeth through the pain as you prepare to swing again"
Nigger what the fuck are you talking about? Is your table top experience based on /tg/ green texts? No one plays like that.
>>
>>744557795
I'll also come in with the assist. System engineering / game design fags talk about "input randomness" and "output randomness", a way to describe how fair something random feels. The former is "a shuffled a deck of cards means you do not know which card will be drawn next" and the latter is "a card that arbitrary beats or ties with or loses to another when played". Which is, generally speaking, always in poor form and always frustrating, as opposed to randomness that may be frustrating but creates variety.
Videogame RPGs are all about bespoke quests designed to be engaged with at a specific pace. Focusing on dice rolls and such means resolution is out of player's hands, with failure effectively just stopping the narrative, rather than taking a tragic turn for the worse. The most randomness you can really hope for is random events or their ordering, but even then balance tends to suffer.
>>
>>744558306
Right. Reading between the lines, your actual complaint is that RNG is unpredictable. You prefer it if you can trust the outcome.

I think you're overintellectualizing your kind of simple opinion here.
>>
>>744558634
That's not what I said at all. My point is that RNG (or rather the effect thereof) in video games is ENTIRELY predictable: it's either a basic win state or a basic lose state. The game continues or it doesn't. It's an abstruse embellishment tacked on to extant gameplay mechanics that already put that premise into action. It was a fine stopgap measure 30 years ago when game engines didn't have the means of portraying actions in real-time, but now it's generally an obsolete artifact of tedium.

Only in the real world - the one that isn't pre-programmed by tired coders trying to wrestle with the trade-offs of concept and execution - can RNG be enjoyable, because there's always a way to continue the game if one has the creativity and cleverness to do so.
>>
>>744558912

>>744558912
This guys retarded but he makes me think of an important point. BG3 is way to liberal with when and where you can long rest ir even short rest. They try to limit thus with supplies instead but they're so generous eith them even on higher difficulty. It really should just be specific areas and there should be spots of the game where you feel like progressing past a certain point is hard and takes a lot more preparation to succeed against the RNG.

Lots of CRPGs forgo this for the sake of keeping the narrative going but I think the narrative should be more like a reward for succeeding, not what drives success to begin with.
>>
>>744559446
You need to be better at expressing yourself. I could decipher what you think, but you didn't check your own logic at all. Your actual opinion is reasonable. You justification is pure drivel.
>>
you can solo the game on hardcore

>>

>>
>>744559072
As an unashamed save scummer, it is exactly like that. Doing the same thing in the exact same encounter will result in drastically different outcomes. A deep gnome wiped my party with three crit ray of sickness in a fucking row. I reloaded the encounter and one shot him with smite after his first ray of sickness failed the save. The game is a literal casino if you don't abuse alert and one shot the entire enemy before they move. Literal gambling. It forces you to trivialize it with camp casters, haste bullshit, or explosive abuse to bypass combat. "Skill" or game knowledge gets obliterated by critical misses.
>>
>>744558306
>rng is bad because I am neurotic and can't handle a single turn not going my way
lol
>>
>>744558912
Anon, the point of tabletop is to build a team with the skills, spells and equipment to make it possible to overcome the challenges the DM sets up. The issue isn't that the RNG systems are redundant to the gameplay style, it's integral to it. it's that much of both modern tabletop culture and CRPGs are obsessed with narrative focuses instead of actually overcoming a challenge by hook or by crook.
>>
>>744559890
Following his logic, if we include saves into the mix, the only game state is win anyway. There is no loss state.
>>
>>744559641
>I think the narrative should be more like a reward for succeeding
What joy, anonymous! It just so happens that almost every single video game boils down to hard loss state of "you can't continue further from here" and the intended win state, which includes both narrative and mechanical content. And your complaints about resting in the context of D&D applies to literally everything which supports saving and loading.
>>
>>744559990
there's this strange mental block that prevents autismals from differentiating real life from video games, did you know some people think artificial intelligence is REAL? and not just the computer flipping a coin with a predetermined win-loss rate as to whether or not it kills you? there's no difference between a video game and a slot machine, which is why gamers are so easy to hook into gambling with loot boxes and gacha shit
>>
>>744559890
save scumming robs the player of the experience of coming back after a series of disastrous turns, the drama of overcoming the odds is very satisfying. every CRPG once it's not game breakingly buggy should have some kind of ironman mode like BG3's honor mode because being forced into committing to actions and scenarios even when things go wrong is fun
>>
>>744560105
Okay buddy.
You can't reduce all finite state machines into the end states. The transitions between intermediate states matter.
>>
>>744560252
>>
>>744559890
>As an unashamed save scummer
Random e-thots finish the game in honor mode and you can't, your opinion about game design is your worthless.
>>
>>744559979
It is kind of true. Circumventing failure and blunders are a big part of the fun, but when quick loading is an option it undercuts the tension and effort. Saves and resting needs to be way more limited. It should only really be possible at the Sigils and even that might be too clustered. At the very least Tactician should have had that.
>>
>>744560295
goofs and gaffs add texture the games man. an example in a multiplayer save was that mid battle a friend tried to heal me by throwing a potion but he aimed it wrong and it killed me, and then we spent the rest of the fight struggling to stabilize. though if honor mode existed for classic fallouts I would NOT use companions because of the image you posted lmao
>>
>>744560252

No, savescumming "robs" me of getting buttfucked by a series of bad rolls and having to restart a ten minute fucking fight.
>>
>>744560252
I can't comprehend the mind of gamblers. You should all be executed. There is no reasonable person not suffering from brain damage who will look at a spell that has an at best 70% chance to hit and then a 1-10 variance in damage and believe that's permissible.
>>
>>744560252
It really needed Tactician to be more of a middle ground in that regard. I don't want failure to force a complete reset on potentially dozens of hours, because that's just masochism and not exactly fun for me. But the game really should be sectioned off into collections of hurdles and events.
>>
>>744560482
If you didn't build your party to account for bad rolls you didn't build your party right.
>>
>>744560407
>>744559979
It probably wouldn't be so bad if game developers actually modeled lose states for the world
You know, an alternate "ending" that's essentially a cutscene explaining how the hero died and the bad guys won or whatever, like how Fallout goes "and so the vault dweller met his end in the wastes, and the super mutants raided vault 13" and suchlike, or how in System Shock if you activate the laser prematurely it shows how Shodan blew up the earth and turns you into a lobotomized cyborg

99% of games are just a "game over" screen, at best, though, which is not entertaining (the point of games)

gambling with no risk to your finances is fun man, and in BG3 there are many, MANY ways to mitigate RNG I find that people who are complaining about it are massive shitters who couldn't get an advantage roll on anything.

>>744560545
I can agree with that, I'm pretty paranoid about CRPGs just breaking anyway so any mode that doesn't let me reload saves in that regard always put me off slightly. But some kind of middle ground would be ideal for sure
>>
>>744560532
A cantrip? Yeah that's a low resource cost throw away. That's pretty much a spell casters "Skip Turn" button. If you wanted more oomph to help in the encounter why not cast a real spell? If you wanted more reliable output for minimal resource demand that's what Fighters are for.
>>
>>744559890
You need to come at this with the right mindset, the dnd system comes from wargames and still bears some marks of that, dealing with consequences of RNG is one of the most important skills of a wargamer, if your gameplan is entirely contingent on everything going in your way, if you don't have contingencies for escaping, you are not taking the game seriously enough, you are not immersed into the experienced, you just want the game to instantly hand victory for you because you did the "right thing" and never have to think under pressure of an unexpected situation.

Why didn't you have minions out to tank hits and/or threaten the mage to force him to roll with disadvantage thus making 3 crits in a row close to impossible?
>>
>>744560532
This is all an artifact of D&D's history as a wargame, by the way.
Wargames use percentages like this to simplify and account for very abstract forms of interference and performance.
D&D never really changed a lot of these things, and so has weird vestigial limbs kept on as "tradition" that should really be nowhere near the hobby.

You automatically win the game the game the minute you cast haste on any martial character, or figure out you can keep explosive barrels in your pocket. You still can't defend critical missing on a 96% chance to hit. The game becomes so easy by act 3 because the casino can't fuck you anymore because you can attack 6 times a turn. That doesn't mean the fundamental core of combat isn't awful.

>>
>>744538441
Yep. Critical failure / success being 5% chance each is just way too high. Also when it comes to combat there isn't any time to regress to the mean: whiff your shit on turn 1 and the fight is over because you will lose half your team before turn 2.
>>
This game fucking sucks dicks. I paid full price for that bullshit because my friends said it was good.

>If you wanted more reliable output for minimal resource demand that's what Fighters are for
That's a Warlock, actually.
Warlocks are the lazy "I want to click the thing and do consistent damage, and outperform everyone else while doing it" class.
Fighters are martials, which inherently means you are playing a shit character for larp. Fighters are the least shit martial, who sacrifice a lot of the larp for more boring nerd math than casters have, but are still just a castrated version of playing a class you are actually supposed to play, like Druid, Paladin, or Wizard.

Reminder. The Fighting Man was the failstate of character creation back in the day. If you rolled stats too shit to be a caster, you become a Fighting Man. A Fighting Man's job is not to live, it is to die as gloriously and as quickly as possible, so you can reroll a new character that can maybe actually play the game this time. If your Fighting Man somehow, against all odds, lives long enough to reach 5th level, the Fighting Man is retired, he gets a castle and goes to live there, and you roll a new character, hopefully a real character this time.

>I can maximize success by investing a spell and my fighters skill resource into this encounter.

Yes, you're playing the game. This is called "fun"
>>
>>744560935
While yes but those are augmented by the fact you're probably investing your Warlocks whole being into buffing those specific buttons. I was talking more about something like a utility wizard using it.

Have you ever played or read, provided you are old enough any CYOA gamebooks, or their digital counterparts? The FUNDAMENTAL problem with such structures, whether you are looking at them as a designer or as an analyst, is that combinatorial explosion makes it unfeasible to make sufficiently many truly different choices or consequences. Keep in mind, the "content" there is just a few paragraphs of prose, not even any assets one expects to see in proper vidya.
That is relevant because engaging with systems means reducing them to actually relevant parts, provided you are the type to actually think about it at all. Any narrative difference is a carefully constructed lie of sizeable branching, which is honestly fine. But that extends to gameplay and mechanical interactions too, because all the fancypants claims of reactivity are often half-a-tier above "the choice was moving across the room and the consequence is staring at a brick wall". Just like with conventional linear narratives, it's fine, but then I expect the visceral experience of interfacing with the game to be good, rather than hide behind alleged greatness of variety and branching. Yeah sure you can engage with the state machine in a multitude of ways, draw a bunch of different routes on the same graph, but is it fun?
>>
>>744561072
Okay, Grandpa, I'm sure your friends at the old age home will love to hear your stories.
>>
>>744560843
you say that as if you could carry explosive barrels for every single fight without using cheats like in those tiktok shorts, and then you wonder why you get hard filtered by a gnome casting a level 1 spell
>>
>>744561272
to be fair there is alot of explosives in act 1, but yeah people acting like barrelmancy solves every fight in the entire game is silly.
>>
>>744561185
The fact that meaningfully expanding a state machine is difficult doesn't reduce the state machine gets reduced. I don't lose my money because gaining it is difficult. That's not how anything works.
>>
>>744560843
>You still can't defend critical missing on a 96% chance to hit.
sure I can, rng is fun and crisis management in a game with RNG to recover from a turn that goes poorly is a part of the skill one should cultivate when playing the games. if you cannot handle this, just play a different genre that has no RNG
>>
>>744561391
First of all, reducing a complex system into easily digestible and/or calculable form is the purpose of fields like boolean algebra and simulation. That is how SOME shit works.
Second of all, we aren't discussing formal analysis of a mathematical model, we are talking about engaging with videogames for recreation. Why exactly is figuring out the gist of how they work and making judgements based on that treated as heresy? Is playing games with personal handicaps or minmaxing the shit of games verboten too? Maybe that is too much "reduction" for your taste, or maybe skipping cutscenes is not cool either.
I simply don't understand what's your issue with basic human act of simplifying things. It's not like state machines can't be made more or less verbose either: a dialogue tree can be represented as a collection of lines, or lines and portraits, or only variable changes.

The lore doesn't evne make sense. He was a human who would have had to live like 250 years before the event where he gets tadpoled becomes a thing. Larian fucked with everything to make this nonsensical plothole work. They had to turn Balduran into an elf to keep him alive, even though every statue and the original logs in BG1 say he was racist towards elves kek

Holy shit Larian has the worst writing in the industry.

It applies in any task where you are trying to accomplish it quickly and can't take your time to make sure you get it right. In scenarios where you have time to make multiple attempts until you succeed you can do what is called taking ten.
>>
>>744563323
There shouldn't be any drow on the surface anyway who don't get hunted down by humans. I don't even understand your point. You are highlighting Larian's garbage writing.

Here is Ed Greenwood stating that Balduran is human
https://x.com/TheEdVerse/status/1704515325910262226

Therefore Larian's writing is pure fan fiction. Balduran die in the Balduran's Isle killed by werewolves or died while trying to escape. He would have had to live for centuries to become tadpoles like in Larian's timeline. Trying to turn him into an elf to survive for that long is not canon but video game retcon by developers who didn't even create the real Baldur's Gate games.

As someone who beat the game on honor after finishing every quest, there's no point at which the RNG matters beyond the first few hours. After act 2 your failure percentage is 1/400 and your spells hit every time, through ten degrees of legendary resistance.

In BG maybe. But in actual 5e D & D you only auto fail or auto pass in combat. If you roll a 20 on a skill check it's just 20 + your modifier. They may have changed this in 2024's cash grab woke version, but I don't play that.
>>
>D&D lore nerds not realizing Hasbro/WoTC has been intentionally retconning/rewriting D&D lore and taking fat stinking shits on everything that existed pre-Woke era
all the stuff written in the 80s and 90s is retconned out now. I mean shit now Tieflings are so ridiculously commonplace they're more common than Humans who are supposed to be the most populous race in D&D. 20 years ago Tieflings were beyond rare because most of those misbegotten demon-spawn were killed as infants per D&D lore back then. Larian were probably specifically told to include Balduran as an elf and also make him a mindflayer.
>>
>>744540257
Crits only apply in combat, but if you're rolling and you roll min value then you fail. Otherwise you wouldn't roll in the first place.
>>
>>744563535
Not even I BG it's true, you have things with over 20 goals and natural 20 is just narrator flavour text. 20 is just 20. 20 in combat is the best possible outcome, so it might mean 0 damage in fact.
>>
Yawn
>>
>>744538441
In BG3 you can stack modifiers so high by end of the game nothing can touch you, even early game you can stack Guidance and Enhance Ability to easily beat most checks even with middling stat/prof bonuses. You can also just brute force checks with Inspiration since the game is constantly giving you it for doing basic shit.

A bigger problem is the default builds of the party members are dogshit, so you have to beeline to Withers to get a decent party.
>>
This game looks cringe, even for fantasy slop standards. I don't get the hype.
>>
>>744538441

>>

>>
>>744567935
Hasbro/WotC were actually pretty handsoff for BG3, other than Mike Mearls giving lore/rules assistance as requested.
>>
Oh yeah? I create a gay ass spell that lets my character break the fourth wall and use magic on the dice, so it always rolls a 20 perfectly. There. I just broke your retarded ass system. Don't like it? Too bad. D&D lets you do whatever you want with IMAGINATIONNNNN, which is why it's a retarded system, despite having 30 manuals and autistic lore and rules that could fill an entire bookshelf.
>>
>>744573423
That wouldn't work unless you have a shit DM. They act as the "referee" on what works and doesn't.
Not even unique to D&D. That's any tabletop RPG.

I loved the game, got really far into Act 3 but real life happened and had to step away.
By the time I could try to play again, I didn't remember how to use all the abilities, almost every hotbar is occupied with spells/abilities and item abilities, and it's so absolutely overwhelming.

The idea of starting over again while fun is a hurdle since I know if I do so, I'll need to expect to be playing only this for a few months and I still want to finish a number of shorter games first
>>
>>744568012
You can get bonus points from rolling other dices like d4 from druid and d6 from bard
>>
>>744567472
It's weird, everyone always complains about Act 3 but I love Act 3, it's my favorite.
Act 2 is the part I hate.
>>
>>744574504
Act 3 had alot more bugs/performance issues, which can be remedied via patches. The locations of act 2 are just visually bland and uninteresting. Also on replays, Act 3's quest breaking isn't as prominent if you know what leads to what. I remember just finding Ethel before interacting with the victims of hags meeting. Or going into the sewers and sequence breaking like 5 other quests since half the quests seem to go into the sewers

WotC specifically trying to mimic Larian with their Dark Sun announcement was interesting.
Larian tends to tease their recent RPGs with shock value. Dark Sun was introduced recently with blood/nudity/gore, etc and they announced it as a Mature Only setting coming out. Took them long enough.

Where it gets retarded is if you’re a wizard, you invested in something like arcana but then fail to identify a magic symbol or something. But then the fighter from the middle of bunfuck nowhere wants to try identifying it, the DM for some inconceivable reason allows him to do it instead of asking “why should I let you do this if the magic expert can’t do it”, he rolls a nat 20 and magically gains knowledge about magic out of nowhere that the wizard somehow didn’t know

Or if the fighter tries kicking a door down, the DM for some reason asks for an ability check instead of just letting him kick the door down, then, the wizard with strength as a dump stat tries and he rolls a nat 20

>but it’s le funny
Yes it’s funny when it happens ONCE. But if it happens over and over again it actually gets very irritating because it implies your stats don’t even fucking matter it’s the stupid d20 that decides everything

This is why if you ever DM, or play a game make sure the DM doesn’t DM based on le epic Reddit stories or YouTube videos. The DM should be someone who knows what they’re doing
>>
>>744577308
The DM should be giving advantage/disadvantage in appropriate situations. They should also just give an auto success when it applies very well for a specific character.
But the quality of the game will vary from DM to DM.
>>
why is larian combat so good
why can't other developer's combat be good
>>
>>744577308
And adding on to this, the DM should never ask you to roll for an ability check if 1. There is no reasonable chance your character will fail at doing something and 2. If there is no meaningful consequence if you fail

If the fighter fails to kick the door down and rolls a nat 1 then something should happen to make sure the situation permanently changes so the wizard can’t roll, maybe he kicks through the door, it opens but his foot gets stuck. Otherwise there is functionally no point in rolling.

And in general the more the DM makes you roll the greater statistical odds you will inevitably fail
