Better visuals than the arcade version, fantastic soundtrack and overall presentation, more features than anyone would ever expect from a fighting game port, and a perfect balance of "easy to play, hard to master" that most fighting games struggle to nail.
It had easily the most single player content of any fighting game ever made to that point. It was literally "Holy fuck this looks amazing". A true next generation leap. You have to realize that it released in 1998. Smash bros 64 released a year later in 1999. Compare how the two games look.
