someone explained this to me as it introducing the covenant to new fans

why the fuck in gods name would you use the shitty book lore names like the kigyar in their introductions instead of, i don't know, calling them jackals and shit?

i don't give two fucks if in the books that's what the humans called them, in halo 2 the covenant call them by their actual names because the script wasn't made by autists ouroborosing themselves
>>
>>744549765
The hierarchs knew the rings would genocide everything but were insane enough they still thought they would follow the forerunners to paradise that way. Obviously when the elites caught wind of this they said no fucking way
>>
>>744549765
At some point the highest prophets learn the truth, but by that point they are in too deep to back off. The prophet faction of the covenent that separated from their home planet was only a tiny fraction of their species, and their home planet was lost not long after the split. The survivors on high charity suffered genetic degradation over centuries combined with their pampered lifestyles, their species was a broken mess with no home to go back to.
>>
>>744539083
They are literally so disgusting and weak they need to float around on chairs. At the very least an ugly prophet is lore accurate.

>>
>>744550760
>someone explained this to me as it introducing the covenant to new fans
Why the fuck would they need to "introduce" the covenant to new fans anyway?
No one needed the covenant to be introduced like shitty wrestlers back in the day to know who they were, so why the fuck was this needed now? It's just completely baffling and retarded.
>>
>>744551178
The covenant believes the forerunners ascended to godhood and that activating the rings is a way to do the same. When the prophets later discover humans and find out that they are the remnants of the forerunners they had to cover it up by trying to exterminate them, because if word got out that their religion is built on a lie that would completely shatter the covenant.
As for why the prophets still want to activate the rings despite that, I'm not actually sure. I think they deluded themselves into thinking that the humans that remain were simply unworthy of ascending or something? Obviously the space jews are worthy of ascending to godhood so activating the rings is fine, who cares if everyone else dies so long as the prophets get to ascend right?

>>
>>744551523
I think you're right since Mercy tells Chief that they're going to finish what they started and this time no human would be left behind. So maybe they wanted to exterminate humans before "ascending"?
>>
>>744551509
Designers believe modern audiences need everything spoonfed to them, or they'll get confused and overwhelmed.
>>
>>744551797
>So maybe they wanted to exterminate humans before "ascending"?
Pretty sure he just meant activating the rings. Truth bumrushes the portal to the ark instead of trying to wipe out earth, because the rings would do that anyway once activated.
>>
>>744551523
Essentially they have no choice but to commit to their zealotry because their entire civilization depends on it. When first contact occurs Truth is fully cognizant that humans registered as forerunners but chose to wipe them out unlike every other race the covenant encountered because the covenant would collapse if the truth came out. He admits this to Johnson in halo 3 also. The great journey is the covenants entire purpose so they delude themselves out of desperation into believing they will find paradise because the alternative is accepting their civilizations defeat

The mandate of the commission was to bear witness to, record, and in some cases grant amnesty to the perpetrators of crimes relating to human rights violations, as well as offering reparation and rehabilitation to the victims. A register of reconciliation was also established so that ordinary South Africans who wished to express regret for past failures could also express their remorse.

It's a bit unclear what exactly Truth's thought process was when they were trying to activate Halo. I think denial is the most likely case, maybe twinged with a bit of death cult behavior, as often happens when the absurdly, incomprehensibly corrupt are allowed to dictate a society.
Regret and Mercy were pretty much just press ganged and along for the ride at that point, what they thought or believed basically doesn't matter. Though, Mercy spending his last couple curses to iterate human extermination as something that should be repeated, does at least suggest they don't have (or don't believe) every single piece of the puzzle.
I suppose it's not that hard to believe a hardcore zealot to believe exactly the parts of their scripture that confirm what they want to believe, while losing interest and ignoring the part that explains why that isn't actually the case.

Halo has less depth than Star Wars so its even harder to fuck it up.

With star wars, you have not-jet fighter combat segments which take up about 20 minutes of screentime.
Lightsaber-fightsaber shit and the spacewizard powers.
And the boots on the ground military shtick.
There are games that cater to all of these scenes but to get star wars you need all three of these in one movie.

Covenant names for ships and larger projects are always flowery teasing of parody.
A good parallel is shit in Starship Troopers, or Helldivers. Just instead of patriotism and jingoism, it's much more poetic and poncey. But fundamentally similar.
Helldivers would call the prison world a Maximum Security City
The Covenant would call the ship sent to bury evidence the Truth and Reconciliation, and their capital which is mostly built off of hundreds of years of manipulation and exploitation of client species being named High Charity.

Why do halo devs struggle with the brute rage mechanic? They keep changing how it works. Just make it the brute’s equivalent to having their ‘shields’ popped. Because making a ranged unit that becomes a melee unit when it is half dead is incredibly stupid, and hard to implement because it makes zero tactical sense.
So either Brutes effectively die early, because they accomplish nothing after raging, or Brutes don't even matter until they start raging, because they magically become bullet proof because angy which is mitigated by just killing them one at a time.
The opposite would make sense. They run up to beat the shit out of you, but then start shitting their pants and head back to fight at range. But that's not how the thematics of a berserk rage work.

It DOES succeed at making Brutes look like the ultimate jobbers of the universe though, who need adult supervision to function as a society, and thus willingly suck cocks while being obviously duped, because their society collapses otherwise when a Brute engineer stubs his toe and breaks the machine that makes everyone not die.

Nah, it’s you who doesn’t understand character design. To have a character land they have to be anthropomorphized, so unless you want no compelling personality charisma etc just revulsion like say the xenomorph in alien they have to have human characteristics. Elites are easily the most successful of halos enemy’s and it’s because they are basically scaly humans with humanlike culture and motivations

I was reading a book about the History of English by Albert Baugh, and he brings up how incredibly malleable the Vikings were. They were always moving around to new places and conquering random lands that it made their ideology super flexible and allowed them to integrate into local religions and social norms very easily. They invaded England and France and were able to adjust to the local customs extremely quickly (and take a bunch of wives for themselves) because of how easily they could adopt foreign principles.
>>
>>744562610
Frank's fanfic does not count more than the rest of the fucking series you utter retard. Spark straight up tells Chief that he is a forerunner. The original ending of Halo 2 was Arbiter discovering a forerunner sarcophagus with a human skeleton inside. Spark in CE is excited to learn about "our lost time" (human history), and humans are the only ones who can effortlessly use forerunner technology. While also being called fucking reclaimers because they're taking back their old technology.
>>
>>744562713
They made the brutes more human looking because they wanted to give them important characters like atriox that people found compelling. Considering atriox is one of the very few things that have worked in the 343 era that was a smart choice. And yes I know 343 didn’t make hw2

Halo suffers massively from never having a consistent vision for writing.
>halo 1 was written as totally-not-marathon 4, the eu was it's own thing that bungie never took into consideration

The concept art for brutes in 3 looked cool and their armour matched their weapons, but then for some reason they just decided to make them all blue, and have their armour completely disintegrate when you shoot them, and they shaved them, and their armour in general just looks really flimsy and tacked on. It baffles me why they didn't just make an animated series set within the canon. Like an anthology series just retelling various stories from the books or something. People would have appreciated it far more. Look at how well the first season of Arcane was recieved. Or how the Cyberpunk anime was recieved. It CAN be done. Paramount is just fucking shitty.

What did Staten mean by this?

>Entertainment Weekly quoted H2 lead writer Joe Staton, "You could look at [the story] as a damning condemnation of the Bush administration's adventure in the Middle East" (Keighley, 2004). After this story was discussed on the ultra-conservative blog Free Republic, Staton posted a clarification:

>Let me be really clear about this: there is no intentional political message in Halo2, anti-Bush or otherwise. While I tried to be mindful of folks' sensitivities as I wrote its story, I knew that the game was going to scrutinized by a large, diverse audience, and would, therefore, be interpreted (or mis-interpreted, as the case may be) any number of different ways. The EW journalist chose to include one of my examples of possible misinterpretation in the article, but not all of them. Most importantly, the journalist left out my closing statement: "Look, you can read anything into the story that you like - call a damning condemnation of the Bush Admnistration's [sic] adventure in the Middle-East, for example. But you'd be wrong." …Halo2's story is non-partisan. Any meaning you ascribe to it is yours alone. And remember, at the end of the day, whatever some journalist says I said really doesn't matter. The proof is in the pudding. Play the game, and I think you'll see it's just that: a fun game with a good story.

Back in 2005 and 2006 the biggest anticipation was the Halo 2 Soundtrack CD.

>The most common question I get asked is, "Where is the Halo Soundtrack Vol. 2?" Well, I just went over to the very fount of aural pleasuring, Mr. Marty O'Donnell who looked me straight in the eye and with a glint of wry, grandfatherly wisdom said, "The soundtrack is done, and mastered and ready to be shipped off to the factories. It is not being held up by me, Nile Rodgers, or by any of the artists signed by Nile Rodgers, contrary to internet rumors." With a twirl of his cape and a tip of his top hat, he rapped his cane and bid me good day!

>Pete Parsons and Joe Staten are, as I write this, in New Zealand, at WETA, with Peter Freakin' Jackson, where they're brainstorming the Halo movie, and more importantly, walking around in a starry-eyed haze, marveling at Orc costumes, Centaur swords and giant gorillas. Every ten minutes or so, uberfanboy Pete will instant message me with some new bulletin, like, "OMG I just saw Andúril, the Flame of the West!" Or, "Oh wow! I stole some soft leather green point-toed boots. I am Elvenshod! See how I prance, as light and airy as an Elf in his aerie." Yep, that is just how Pete rolls.

>Sound tools are a big deal this time around, since there's no dedicated audio processor in the Xbox 360, so there's a lot more "book keeping" for our audio wizards. This time around they have to keep better track of what goes where and when - on Xbox they could rely on the hard drive for sloppy stuff, but this time around everything has got to be buttoned up real tight.

Bungie famously took the George Lucas approach to (the majority) of the books. In that if they liked something they might include it in the game, and even then it was like pulling teeth. The one exception is Contact Harvest, which was written by Joseph Staten, who directed the cutscenes during Bungie's era and wrote the scripts for them and missions.

>During the writing of Halo: The Fall of Reach, Bungie almost cancelled the novel but was convinced by Trautmann to approve it in exchange for himself, Matt Soell and Brannon Boren writing an estimated "80 percent" of the in-game dialogue of Halo: Combat Evolved. The dysfunctional relationship between Bungie and the Microsoft team working on the game created some disconnect - the notorious "this cave is not a natural formation" line was caused by Bungie promising that the environment would not be immediately obvious as an artificial formation. During development of Halo 2, Trautmann and Boren argued for the inclusion of ODSTs in the game, although Bungie questioned their recognizability to fans and the in-universe role they served.

343 aka Halo Studios (though arguably they are 343 almost in name only since most of the 'leaders' at 343 have since left) famously treat the books as gospel. Some people even say the books are telling the more interesting parts of the story vs like Halo 4, 5, and Infinite

From Eric Nylund himself

http://halo.bungie.org/bwu/index.html?item=91

>The Master Chief was a complete mystery. In fact, many people (names omitted here, so I'm not assassinated) wanted the Master Chief to remain a blank, faceless solider. Terminator-ish as it were. They weren't convinced any writer could portray him as tough as he is in the game and make him, for lack of a better word, "human," too.

>One complaint I hear a lot is that the novels aren't canon and do not mesh with the game. From the very beginning the novels were designed to be optional, but official, material. Bungie didn't want people to have to read the novels to follow the game. That would be silly. The novels are designed to be an official companion pieces, and if you read them you experience a richer back story and understanding of the Halo universe. This strategy, however, necessitated that references to the extra material be minimized in game so as to not confuse people who hadn't read the books.

>People got the impression that the Master Chief was the only Spartan (in the Halo:CE game manual it said he was the "the last known Spartan" or words to that effect), but people wanted more of a good thing.

Writing the Fall of Reach was actually really rough for Nylund. He had around 7 weeks to write out the entire book for a deadline of two weeks before the game released - by then the story of the game was probably sealed and it was just last touches being made - and halfway through writing the book Microsoft executives wanted to cut it since they wanted Chief to be everybody's self-insert. (Thank god for Eric Trautmann otherwise the Halo EU wouldn't exist.)

>>744565135

>>744565268
It isn't canon at all. It was confirmed officially but also, the show is completely retarded. I have not seen the show in full but it is contradictory in hundreds of ways. It could never be canon without baaically ripping ALL of the prior lore up.
>Captain Keyes and Miranda are black
>Sgt Johnson doesn't even exist
>Kelly, Linda, Fred and Blue team don't exist, but "Silver Team" exists
>Master Chief is always taking his helmet off
>one character is a human girl the covenant abducted and raised for some reason
>Master Chief has sex with this covenant raised human girl and Cortana watches
>Chief chimps out at Dr Halsey and tries to kill her
>Chief dies at one point and Cortana uses his suit to kill Covenant bad guys
>Arbiter and Atriox both appear but I don't think they do much
>one of the main plotlines is that UNSC bad and human insurrectionists good
>a Chevy Tahoe makes a cameo
>Chief is super emotional and is always disobeying orders
>Capital of Reach, where a lot of the plot goes down, is called "Reach City" and not New Alexandria

Basically they got almost nothing right. From the clips I have seen there are maybe a couple of decent action scenes and the visual depictions of the Covenant and the Spartan armor are ok. That's literally it. Everything else is complete trash. They spent multi-millions to make this, by the way.

>From the very beginning the novels were designed to be optional, but official, material. Bungie didn't want people to have to read the novels to follow the game. That would be silly. The novels are designed to be an official companion pieces, and if you read them you experience a richer back story and understanding of the Halo universe

Frank O'Connor and Brian Reed had the opposite approach. They wanted people to have to read the novels and comics to follow Halo 4 and The Reclaimer Saga.

>Greg Bear: Cryptum, the first Halo novel, and so anyone who’s a Halo fan is going to enjoy the collaboration between the people in [Microsoft’s] 343 [division]—Frank O’Connor and Kevin Grace

>Frankie: I was always doing little tiny incremental things with development throughout, but where I really started working on things going directly into the game was Halo 3, when I worked with (engineer) Damian Isla on the terminals that explained the deeper lore. So I was doing more and more story as we got towards the end of it, and as we started Reach, I got the chance to actually write the script.

>Frankie: Most of the books for the last two years have dealt with building backstory for Halo 4, rather than fixing canonical errors or mismatches. We've bought ourselves a little bit of latitude with the terminals in previous Halo games. We knew that the fiction was going to evolve when we were writing the terminals for Halo 3.

>“Every novel that you’ve read in the last couple of years, every comic book, the Terminals in Halo Anniversary […] everything is feeding directly into the story for the next Halo trilogy.” [Frank O’Connor, Halo Fest 2011 – Halo 4 Panel (2:50)]

The problem was not >the books, it was Frankie.
>>
>>744565761
>That's very odd. Is the UNSC Gladius a ship in the show's canon?
Yep. It's the main frigate or something that is featured in S1.
The name does not exist in any way in the "canon" universe.
>>
>>744565853
I think Brian Reed was the bigger problem. That dude fucking SUCKED at writing and it showed. He used to make Marvel comics and he wrote both Spartan Ops and part of Halo Escalation where Master Chief has to kill the Didact a second time, which was very stupid and nobody even cared about it. He also wrote Halo 5 and I think that was too much even for 343i, so he got fired during Infinite's development.
>>
>>744565516
>The problem is that they treat THEIR 343 books as gospel.
They do treat some of the lore from the Bungie books as gospel but yeah it does heavily skew towards their books.

>They don't give a shit about Nylund's work because Kilo-Five shits all over it.
That's not necessarily 343 though, that's just Karen Traviss. Basically everything she touches she corrupts or ruins. She did it with Star wars and then ragequit after the cartoon George Lucas made retconned her Mandalorian lore, and called Star Wars Fans who like the Jedi 'nazis'.

Then she went and did the same 'special unique squad' shit in Halo. The only thing she's managed to not ruin was the Gears of War franchise, her books there were semi-decent and Gears of War 3, which she wrote, turned out great. I don't know if she was just being tard-wrangled there or what.

>As for why the prophets still want to activate the rings despite that, I'm not actually sure
Unfortunately I think part of the problem here is Truth's character got completely bungled in Halo 3.

You can listen to a Covenant radio transmission on the Ark where Truth tells his troops that he brought them here to be "safe from Halo's fire", openly acknowledging that the Halos will kill everyone.
But everywhere else in H3 he is acting like a religious zealot. Also he sent Tartarus to activate the ring in H2, so I guess he counted on Tartarus failing?

from what I recalled from the original script for H2s ending, Truth revealed that he wanted to completely wipe the slate clean where it was just him and his most loyal followers who wouldn't question why the halos firing didn't ascend them
>>
>>744566695
More to it, but they were also extending the missing backhalf of H2 into a full game.

And also still somehow ran low on time to finish some missions - if you ever wondered why Floodgate was so short a level, it is because its 2nd half, which would have been a long trip through the crashed Flood infested carrier, was repurposed into being High Charity for the entire level of Cortana.
Which is why Cortana does not feel much like being in High Charity - and they originally had unfulfilled plans for that level like going through the Mausoleum of the Arbiter and having to fight through Flood resurrected Arbiters, and then fight Gravemind using a Scarab's laser cannon.
>>
>>744566676
>Also he sent Tartarus to activate the ring in H2, so I guess he counted on Tartarus failing?
Nah this is when things start to get messy with earthark being cut from H2. And slipspace was basically teleportation in H2, that shit taking a lot of time was basically never in the games until Reach of all things.
Sent Tartarus to activate Halo, Truth teleports to the Ark which was on Earth to shield himself and his most loyal followers from the firing.

Bungie had basically no idea of where they wanted to go, so they took the scrapped ending for Halo 2, removed some aspects of it, and cobbled together a story that only gets a pass because they just methodically went plot point to plot point with big epic reveals and sequences.

cause halo 3 is missing a monumentally essential piece of story that got cut that explains everything, and that’s the forerunner data vault. I truly cannot understand why this got cut outside of time constraints. it’s the final piece of halo 2's original ending and since halo 3 is just halo 2's final act it makes it all the more excruciating that this was cut.
>forerunner data vault contains all of the forerunners accumulated knowledge and a genetic template to recreate a life form(human) and restart civilization
>for some unknown story reason it never activated leaving humans as they are today
>truth learns about this at some point
>despite popular belief truth did have some religious belief in the great journey despite being told what the rings do by guilty spark
>upon learning what the data vault does especially with the genetic template he makes the most jewish plan possible
>he believes the great journey means only the strongest become gods
>therefore the strongest=last one standing
>intentionally let his prophet rivals get killed off
>let the retard brutes take over
>start a civil war
>reach the ark
>activate the rings killing everything
>put himself into the template
>start a pilgrimage back into the empty galaxy with a newly revived prophet race and what’s left of the covenant with him and rule as god with all forerunner knowledge at his disposal
it suddenly explains all his schizo behaviour in halo 3 because he was this close to succeeding and becoming "god" by using the entire galaxy as sacrificial lambs before getting cucked

The potential Halo 3 that followed up to this ending has been a fun thought experiment. Since the storyboards end with the Arbiter talking about the fires of civil war still raging, and the threat of the Flood was just never dealt with.
So I feel like it would have been Arbiter missions dealing with ending the civil war, Master Chief dealing with rescuing Cortana/the Flood before it all culminating in destroying the Gravemind.

I think the writers are really bad at coming up for new faction and new villains with motives that do not directly involve the covenant. like look at the covenants explanation in halo 4. basically nonexistant you have to go looking for it.Then in infinite 'theyre like mercenaries isolated from the rest of them'
and their forerunner enemies were just horrible.
Do not expand on the forerunner stuff. Have humanity face another existential threat after trying to rebuild civilization. Have a human civil war where all the ONI shit blows up in their face. Show elites/humans trying or failing to coexist. Have spartans make their own militia factionn or something. Its like with disney star wars refusing to drop storm troopers and the same handful of siths and the skywalker family. When the best expanded material actually made new villains and heroes.
And Halo Reach proved you CAN do it without chief they just have to be tacticool and serious feeling without relying on book knowledge. But 343 thinks since locke was rejected the issue is not using chief himself.

Halo's story ended with 3. It was the perfect ending where humanity averted certain extinction, all loose ends were tied up, and Chief and Cortana had a fitting and bittersweet ending. You can't have another conflict in that universe anywhere close to being as epic as trying to prevent a bunch of genocidal aliens from activating an ancient ringworld that will wipe out all sentient life on the galaxy in a bout of misplaced religious fervor, all while a near omnipotent parasitic lifeform threatens to assimilate all life in the galaxy anyway.

There's actually only 1 Earth level

>Level 1
Cairo station
>Level 2
Covenant Ship (CUT)
>Level 3
New Mombasa
>Level 4
Gas Giant
Alpha Moon (CUT)
>Level 5
Delta Halo / Regret
>Level 6
Quarantine Zone (Most of it was CUT)
>Level 7
Forerunner Tank (CUT)
>Level 8
High Charity
>Level 9
Delta Halo Control Room (Halo 2 Retail Ending)
>Level 10
Earth Ark (CUT)

Roughly 20% of the geometry developed for alphamoon was later reused in the final game in the end zone of Sacred Icon and the later Quarantine Zone

Earth Ark was fully blocked out and in some way implemented in-game. The level was to involve a fight with two Scarabs - something later seen in storyboards for later revisions of The Great Journey before ultimately being realised in Halo 3's The Covenant mission

>Marty: It's like you strapped a bomb to stencil shadows and used it to kill the last level in the game
>Joe: You know, even at the end of Halo 2, we never planned for the Master Chief to make good on his promise to Cortana to come back and get her

Joe Staten confirmed that the retail Halo 2 epilogue cutscene, depicting the Flood overtaking High Charity and Cortana being trapped with the Gravemind, was always intended in the original script.

>Alpha Moon (CUT)

Joseph Staten: Well, the Heretic leader would be a Hunter. And most of the Heretics that you fought in the next level were all Hunters. And don't forget that early on in Halo 2 days, where you went to go attack the Heretics was actually the moon near the first Halo ring, the old infamous Alpha Moon environment. And that Alpha Moon environment, which became Gas Giant—where they killed the Heretic leader—or a gas mine... I think some of that geometry actually got used again—I mean, completely tweaked—but for the Sentinel Wall level, right?

Joseph Staten: Same sort of design. But yeah, originally in Halo 2, you were supposed to go as the Arbiter to the moon that you saw in the first Halo game, and that's where the Heretics' head hold up, and they were going to be Hunters. God damn, that sounds cool.

Joseph Staten: As much as I think we all have mixed feelings about the Arbiter decision...

Joseph Staten: ...and we absolutely didn't execute on it in the way that we really wanted to. But Halo 2, because we made this choice, I mean, all of a sudden, just blew the doors open on the Covenant in this interesting way that now, in Halo 3, I think we can go back to the Master Chief, that singular perspective. And we just, as people making the game, know so much more about that other side of the story. We can create something that's richer. And I think people who played Halo 2, you know, it's kind of this—we took the knock, we made the investment, and then I think we're a lot better off for it.

Joseph Staten: But I remember the conversation, I think I had it with you and Jaime, where I said, "Hunter Heretics!" And you and Jaime looked at me and thought, for some reason, that a whole level populated by Hunters wouldn't be very much fun. I don't know why.

Depends on the game.
In 2 as originally written the Hierarchs (maybe all the Prophets) knew the entire religion was all a sham they used to control the other races, they wanted to wipe out humanity because if the other races learned that Humanity was the Forerunners it would expose the entire lie. Activating the Halo Rings for them is just a way to kill everyone else so they will have the galaxy to themselves.
In 3 this is retconned. Now the Hierarchs fully believe their religion and that activating the rings will ascend them to Godhood and kill the "unworthy". They still know that humans are Forerunner and want to kill them to hide that fact, but apparently think current humanity were the "unworthy" ones who were left behind when the rest of the Forerunners ascended to godhood.
Halo 3 itself had a writing conflict where two of the writers vehemently disagreed over Humans=Forerunners and wrote their own version into the game. The original writer went with the original plan where Humans were Forerunners who were reseeded along with the rest of the galaxies races after the Halo's killed the originals. The new writer instead wanted Stone-Age Humanity to have been discovered by the Forerunners who chose them to become their successors after they killed themselves with the Halo's.

There’s already only 1 earth level. The game feels like all the levels are split into two:

Cairo Station
Outskirts + Metropolis
Arbiter + Oracle
Delta Halo + Regret
Sacred Icon + Quarantine Zone
Gravemind + High Charity
Uprising + Great Journey

Add:
The storm + floodgate (as chief)
The ark + the covenant (as arbiter)
Halo (as chief)

And you basically have Halo 2 and 3 as one complete game

Why? Games achieve platonic communication through simulated experience, which means they don't need to have a perfect contextual lead-in for the player to sublimate. It's one of the strongest arguments for games as a distinct art form, with only children's fairy tales able to achieve similar ease of induction ("Once upon a time...")

Joseph Staten: ...but the worst thing about Halo 2 for me was that... in Halo 1, it was all, look, I could go in, I could script it with AI, I could do playbacks, and I could fix stuff, right? But in Halo 2, we definitely went to the system, where it was a lot of custom animation, really long lead times, and you just... sure, something like the Monitor, if you caught it, you could fix, but it was really hard to go back and fix simple things in Halo 2 cinematics, unfortunately. But the thing I was going to mention before, and I'm not letting you off the hook, is remember what Miranda was going to do to the Master Chief. Would you like to tell the children what Miranda was going to do?

Jason Jones: Yeah, should we wait until the right moment? I think it's still a few missions from now, but I think the phrase "arc-welding a thermonuclear bomb to his armor" comes to mind.

Joseph Staten: That's right. Miranda was going to strap a bomb to the Chief's back after signing a—

Jason Jones: It was going to be awesome.

Joseph Staten: ...a deal with the devil—with the Prophets. And why was she going to do that?

Jason Jones: Why do you need to do that?

Martin O'Donnell: She was mad about Captain Keyes.

Joseph Staten: Still mad.

Martin O'Donnell: Her father's death.

Joseph Staten: Punched her dad in the face.
>>
>>744570530
Jason Jones: But now, I think we can go to the— we can go back to the bomb thing where the Chief's been kind of taking Miranda's orders the whole game, and he comes back from one of his little missions with some little trinket he picked up for Miranda, and he finds her, like, in congress with the Prophets in the back of some Phantom. And it wasn't just 'cause of her dad in Halo 1, but she chose not to trust the Chief because of this, he's going crazy. He's all worried about the ring going off. And... Sorry.

Joseph Staten: It was going to be cool.

Jason Jones: We have listen to the line.

Martin O'Donnell: "I am the monument to all your sins." There's the line. And no one knows exactly what that means except Jason.

Jason Jones: And then it made perfect sense that Miranda and the Prophets get together and say, "Hey, let's send your tin man down with a bomb to take out the Gravemind." Oh, that would have been genius. The most genius part was when the Chief has the bomb... Jaime's going to kill me for even talking about this. I hope he never listens to it. There's no way he'll get this far into the movie.

Jason Jones: ...you with the bomb arc-welded to your back, with your back to, like, this big hole and a bunch of ODSTs, like, backing you into the hole until you jump, and then them throwing, like, a SMG down after you. Oh, that would have been genius.

>Forerunner Tank

Joseph Staten: Preceding this cinematic was where Forerunner Tank was going to take place. That's why this is such a long cinematic stretch. Remember, we would fight through Sentinel Wall—

Martin O'Donnell: Most of the time, the reason there is a long cinematic is because you decided to make them long cinematics. That's what I remember.

Joseph Staten: I'm trying to explain. Arbiter would be kicked down the hole by Tartarus, right, and then, bam, Forerunner Tank. You'd see the Chief's side of the story. They would meet up at the Gravemind. But when we lost Forerunner Tank, we had this really big, big cinematic—big, important cinematic that unfortunately could go nowhere, but right next to another big, long cinematic.

Martin O'Donnell: It's not a plant. It's not Audrey. Although I don't know why I keep thinking about Audrey.

Joseph Staten: Well, there was a big discussion where, you know, as originally designed, the Gravemind was this seething mass of corpses, right?

Martin O'Donnell: Right.

Joseph Staten: His teeth were skulls and he talked from the shadows. And when we moved to the world where we wanted him to have lip sync and actually... Maybe not the best decision in the world, but one, which in the world where we didn't have Forerunner Tank to introduce him properly, we sort of needed to have the moment still, the long moment of the Gravemind introduction.

Martin O'Donnell: What is that thing in the middle of High Charity, Joe? What is that?

Joseph Staten: That is the Forerunner ship. The Forerunner dreadnought.

Martin O'Donnell: Forerunner Ship sounds like the name of a level we should have had. Hmm...

Joseph Staten: Hmm... we'll get there. Oh, here it comes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8xEB0r8TV8M

Joseph Staten: Man, the Covenant really just vacated High Charity. They got the hell out of dodge when they realized what was going to happen. And I remember just these lines that Truth is saying, remember? We wrote just like a whack of, I don't know, 40, 50 sort of one-off lines for the Prophet of—

Martin O'Donnell: It was... 2,000. Yeah. But go ahead.

Joseph Staten: It wasn't that bad, but actually turned out to be really helpful. Lesson being, Marty, always better to write some cool stuff, record that stuff, and—

Martin O'Donnell: ...and always find a place to use it.

Joseph Staten: ...and always find a place to use it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJAygIzAMHc

>Prophet of Truth (loudspeaker): "Fear not, my brothers! The Sacred Icon is secure. It was Tartarus and his Brutes who took the Icon from the Flood, and for that they have our thanks."

>Prophet of Truth (Loudspeaker): "Whosoever is gripped by fear, take heed. I am the Prophet of Truth... And I am not afraid. Noble Mercy is here at my side. His wise counsel ever in my ears."

>Prophet of Truth (Loudspeaker): "This crisis will not be the end of us. It is but one last hurdle before the Journey and salvation!"

None of what you said is a retcon between 2 and 3. Only the Hierarchs know of Halo's true purpose. Regret and Mercy die. Now Truth has to pick up their slack and maintain bombastic sermons for the troops. He is always constantly lying about Halo's purpose and the nature of Humanity whenever his troops are in earshot. The only true thing he says is to Jonhson ("But that secret dies with all the rest") when activating the Ark. He is committed to maintaining the lie to stay in power, even if it kills him.

Reach was pretty kino
>>
>One of the big challenges on Reach was establishing the cast of Noble Team, their human side, how they depend on each other, their relationship to the planet, etc etc. Without that, their death and sacrifice would be empty. But selling nuanced emotion can be very challenging in an action game. It's hard to get to know the subtleties of NPC characters with non-stop gun fire, grenades, and all that Halo sandbox chaos. In addition, the experience needs music to drive the emotion. Without music/audio, the experience itself will feel flat. Also note, that music/audio is added at the very end of development. So there needs to be a lot of faith that "the music/audio/VO will sell x moment" and designers need to give space for the music and story to live within the game.

>We were a few months from completing development. I was building the opening mission, which was designed to introduce Noble Team. Music was still not present and I was getting a lot of pressure from above that was pushing me to borderline panic and illness. I was hearing "You're failing" "This is no fun" etc etc. I was beat down and felt alone.

>At my lowest point on the project, I went to Marty for help and guidance. I explained my design intentions, confided my fears and the pressure I was getting. We sat down and played through the opening mission together. He then turned to me and calmy said, "Niles, everything is going to be fine. This experience is going to be great. This will work. Don't worry."

Bungie devs were wizards

CE's assets were actually designed with static baked lighting in mind. It's visually cohesive. That's why it has aged significantly better.

Halo 2 was originally going to use a Doom 3 esque lighting system that was fully dynamic, and featured inky stencil shadows. They had to drop it midway through development, and fall back to an updated version of CE's renderer. They didn't redo the assets, so the final game just looks really flat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00zI2ryLp5s

Specular on bsp is all kinds of broken in Halo 2, different ways depending on version of the game. Bungie disabled it on many surfaces because of this. In MCC it has a broken directional computation, in Vista it just doesn't work at all. Halo 2's maps were so big the original Xbox couldn't handle it. Containment is the biggest map in Halo 2

Halo 2 had to run on a GeForce3. Doom 3 was made for GeForce 6800

Halo 3, they wanted to finish everything they started with Halo 2's development from 2002 to 2007, that's 5 years, and make it as good as could be. Stuff like warthog tires, scorpion treads, ect are parallaxed in 3. rendering the water as a piece of geometry with havok physics effects

https://www.artstation.com/artwork/EvGlWn

Reach pushed the Xbox 360, roughly ATI X1600, as far as it could go, hence the 20fps and object motion blur

What's with all the washed up book authors after bungie left?
>>
>>744566323
You see this a lot in comics, TV and other collaborative fiction. Lot's of writers just do not play well with others, and hate having to account for other peoples stories and ideas when writing their own. These types have a nasty habit of taking all the plothooks and narrative threads the last writer left for them to build on and blowing them up in the opening scene or saying "Oh we already solved that in-between entries" so they they can write the story THEY want to write. The reason characters always come back from the dead in comics? It's new writers coming in and not wanting to account for a character they wanted to write being killed off by the previous writer.

343 was trying to make it a multimedia scifi franchise instead of game-first like it'd pretty much always been. Of course, Halo had its books but they were never at the center until 343 happened.
I did like the Forerunner books on their own, but I don't really think they were very Halo or really belong in it.

Saying "Frank O'Connor was the base of Halo 4" Is massively unfair. They reused some names from his work and then wrote a completely unrelated and contradictory (and shitty) story with them. It's like accusing George Lucas of having a hand in DisneyWars.

these people are so rotten ugly inside they just cannot help but project this onto everything they create. they're intimidated by beauty and reat it as a personal attack. see: everything they (not just 343) create. just sad

>They reused some names from his work and then wrote a completely unrelated and contradictory (and shitty) story with them.

Explain?
>>
>>744577212
He wrote the Terminals in Halo 3, and in those stories there are of course characters, and being Halo they of course have fancy ridiculous names like "Didact" and "Librarian" and such, and gave the origin of the Flood as the end result of evolution creating an intergalactic "apex predator" that consumed other galaxies. Well the people writing Halo 4 and its multimedia tie-in novels/comics/etc decided to retcon the entire backstory of the setting (such as making the Flood an evil science experiment from the Milky Way) and they rewrote these characters in ways so contradictory to how they were in 3, not just in characterization but in what they even did or where they were, that later Halo media had to create a second retcon that said there were multiple different people running around with the same names to explain the incompatibility.

No.

>Chief is super emotional and is always disobeying orders
To me the dumbest part of all of this is that the show went with there being this magic emotion suppressing implant in all the Spartans (located above their ass?), and if the Spartan finds out about it and goes and cuts this little implant out, they just instantly start getting all their human emotions back.
So the Spartans are the way they are not because of conditioning and indoctrination, but because they have an easy to remove thingy, removing any nuance you could have from a plot delving into the ethics and psychological states of the Spartans and it makes everything that much sillier.

Why would they put the berserk mode powerup on the front of the Brute where it can be shot at? Why make them at all if damaging them makes the Brute go insane and attack allies, especially if you are going to put it on the front where it will be shot at?

In Halo 4 and 5 the covenant species were part of Jul Mdama's faction. Jul faked believing in the Great Journey but used it to get power. In the main game of Halo 4 they're mostly just seen as pirates but in Spartan Ops and Halo Escalation, Jul had his own storyline that WAS going somewhere but got dropped in Halo 5 after Locke assasainated him in a cutscene on the first mission (thanks Brian Reed). Then thr rest of then were called the "Remnant Fleet" and were basically just pirates aside from sone of them who you fight on Sanghelios alongside Thel Vadamee.

The covenant species in Infinite are not just mercenaries. They're the Banished, led by Atriox. It is a different faction introduced in Halo Wars 2. They're not religious and don't believe in the Great Journey and there is a lot more I could explain about this. For example Atriox was basically a cannon fodder Brute who got sick of being treated like shit and started a revolution and his own faction led by Brutes but including a lot of species. He's a pragmatist for the most part and despises the prophets for lying to everyone.

Marty is *the guy* you need to bring up if you want to make tourists seethe.
It's actually a good way to quickly spot tourists.
>Do they seethe at Marty's existence and feel the need to downplay his involvement in the series?
If yes, then you've got yourself a tourist.
I don't even like trump, but Marty was absolutely important to the series and is overall an extremely talented guy. It's okay to like the work of someone you don't have the same views as.

By Halo 3, Truth's plan was to ride out "The Great Journey" on the Ark, then reconquista the purified galaxy with his brutes. He gradually loses his sanity as that plan falls apart. What never made sense was Halo 2's part in it, why have Tartarus activate delta Halo? There was no way Truth could make it to the Ark in time. The failed attempt was neccesary to prime the Halo array for remote activation from the Ark, but that means assuming Tartarus would succeed in starting the procesa but failing to finish it. Would have made more sense if Tartarus knew he had to sacrifice himself to start the process.

And the funny thing is that he barely knew Cortana for any length of time.

Like a day on Reach for the initial test, however long Halo CE, First Strike, and the opening missions of H2 (about a month), and then he ditches her on High Charity, not seeing her for several months until the end of H3.

I always wonder why that is though.
Seems like a pretty shitty system for the Ark to require an individual Halo to fail halfway through firing for it to send its command out.
>>
>>744572218
Truth isn't exactly wrong. He says that on the Ark, where he and his supplicants will be safe from the Halos. Had the flood and elites not followed them, he have an empty galaxy to conquer.
