You do not need anything more than 1080p 60fps.
>>
>>744539336
my main 4k monitor broke and while it was going through the Samsung bullshit repair phase I decided to buy an LG 1440p to tide me over.
I kissed my 4k when it returned. 1440p truly is dogshit
>>
>>744539762
What specs do you have to be able to play well on 4k? And what's a good 4k brand these days?
>>
>>744539336
For a tv? 4k. For a monitor? Bro, you're sitting a few inches away, 1440p is fine. Pay for better upgrades like OLED or ultrawide instead.
>>
>>744539336
I will keep using 1440p until the day i get my hands on a 6090.
>>
>>744539336
There's nothing to discuss now that 5k/1440p dual mode monitors are coming out. You can literally get the best of both worlds at the same time. 5k for desktop/productivity use and swap that bitch into 1440p for gaming.
>>
>>744539336

4k shines for large screens, it doesn't matter that much on panels below 30inches
>>
>>744539406
Is IPS still worthwhile for 4k or should I just not bother

Why'd we go from 1080p to 1440p to using the DCI name of 4k instead of 2160p

>>744539490
They're really not expensive anymore, unless OLED. 4K 160hz IPS monitors are cheaper today than 1440p 144hz IPS monitors were 5 years ago.
>>
>>744540209
Has never happened on any of my 5+ screens.
>>
4k monitors are obviously better than 1440p, as long as they aren't exorbitantly expensive. The difference isn't that noticeable in desktop use but it's definitely noticeable when playing games, even on 27 inch monitors. Everyone telling you otherwise is coping, sour grapes, or needs glasses.

i've had two dual mode monitors and they're both shit. the monitor just cuts the PPI by half and makes everything look like its been covered in grease when i switch to the lower resolution.
>>
>>744540440
The issue is that 4k requires tremendously higher computing power to work
Not even a 5090 can comfortably do 4k native in modern games, let alone 5080 and 5070s

im still not going 4k daily driver though. if I was richer, sure. 1440p 27inch is fine

1440p was always the sweet spot

4k is useless as a monitor unless you don't play videogames seriously and use your PC as strictly as a work and stream device

that's where ai comes in to reintroduce interpolation with ai frames
>>
>>744540698
Needing native for good image quality is a thing on 1080p and 1440p. At 4K, you get good image quality even with upscaling on Performance mode. Why do you think even people with 5090s use upscaling?
>>
>>744539490
You can pick up a decent IPS one with high refresh rate for a few hundred dollars. They're only expensive if you want OLED.
>>
>>744540132
Just make sure it's a good monitor so the bad parts of IPS aren't too bad.
>>
>>744539929

Maybe for gaming, but if you're using it for anything else as well, the extra pixels are very worth it.

Unironcially 1080 unless you are going to get a 5090. 1440 is a meme and 4k more or less requires a 5090.
>But I don't play AAA
Then high resolution is a meme
>>
>>744546321
4k does not require a 5090. Do you fags even play games?
>>
>>744546456
Do you? Virtually every big game struggles to get 90 fps with 5090s at max quality
>>
If I had a 5080 or better, I'd say 4K and if you needed to upscale, using 1080p base resolution with the Performance preset is still decent
But since I have a 5070Ti, I'm sticking with 1440p and upscaling from 960p with the Quality preset
I NEED to maintain at least native 90fps
>>
>>744546521
99.9% of good games have released before 2026. I play at 4k with my RTX4080 and I literally do not remember the last time I dipped below 60fps. If I'm playing something ultra demanding like Cyberpunk with PT or some heavy UE5slop I just turn on DLSS upscaling which at 4k is basically 99.9% as good as native. You really don't need a 5090 for 4k. Only people who don't use 4k think it's needed.
>>
Now that every demanding game supports some sort of upscaling, 4K is becoming the more attractive choice because you can just use DLSS performance or AMD equivalent and it will still look good. Not as good as native 4K, but still good.

>noooo AI sloppa
It still looks much better than 1080p native, and arguably as good or even slightly better than 1440p native w/TAA.
>>
>>744540132
Aren't the prices for high-refresh-rate 4K IPS super bad? I would wait for a deal on a 4 K OLED instead.
>>
>>744540132
If you can run 4K you should be able to afford an OLED.
>>
>>744539336
1440p is good enough, but having them side by side, you can tell which one is better. If I were saving for a monitor, I would go for 4k... or one of those 500hz 1440p.
>>
>>744540698
Native 4k looks worse than DLSS quality. Been the case since DLSS 4.

https://youtu.be/XWwYZFfjHac?si=AskAWyLbRn8LsAXR

DLSS balanced or performance on a 5k2k monitor now looks so much better than native 1440p on a 3440x1440 monitor, it's not even in the same realm. Bozos here are stuck talking about technology as if it were still 2019.

Unless you're running a 50/9000 series card you can't even push the amount of pixels necessary for 4k 240, the ports simply bottleneck you.
>>
What's a good 1440p 165hz+ monitor for $300 or less? The one I'm replacing from two years ago has these flashing horizontal lines on the bottom sixth of the screen that I read apparently happen with MSi monitors all the time.
>>
>>744546826
Basically this. If you're already using DLSS for 1440p (Quality/DLAA) then you might as well get a 4k monitor. There's enough information at those resolutions to pull a good quality image

Pretty much. My 4090 can reach 100ish FPS when maxing out current games at 3440x1440p. I could go 4k with DLSS though DLAA is better for motion clarity and modern games need all the help they can get in this aspect.

4k came out literally 15 years ago and content still isn't optimized that well for it. fonts too small, UI not scaling properly, software glitches and hiccups more common, mostly due to increase in bandwidth required.

4k is only good if you watch UHD movies all the time, otherwise 1440p will suffice and in fact will be better for general use.

>>744539441
1440p is not 2K

>>744539490
good ones are, old models are cheaper.

>>744539621
that is fine for web browsing, youtube and even gaming some slow paced games. 1080p 60fps on a otherwise good quality panel is alright.

>>744540132
IPS is best for fast paced reaction shooters, OLED is best for consuming HDR content and movies and media creation.
>>
>>744539336
you only need 720p
>>
>>744550897
>content still isn't optimized that well for it
Games have supported 4K since the mid 2010s and can run very well (120+) with modern cards. That's the main argument for buying a 4K monitor.

And you still get below 100 fps on average on native real 4k resolutions on modern game releases, you need to use upscaling (DLSS, not DLAA) if you want higher framerates. I really wish I was joking. I feel scammed by nvidia

Enjoy being buckbroken by Nigreedia if you own a 4k monitor

1440p is where it's at, you can stick to a 70-80 series and still have high FPS, a 90 series means your rig can last an entire decade

4k looks better than 1440p, games are clearer and you see more detail. My 9070xt can play games at 4k without any issue, even modern games. The idea that you need a 5090 to reap any benefits from 4k is insanity unless you are chasing pathtracing and only playing AAAA slop. Once you have experienced 4k on a good monitor it will change your perspective and copes
>>
>>744539336
When it's 16" from your face, it really doesn't matter.

4k is for screenshots. There is just no way running at 4k justifies the system resource drain that could be used to get another 40-50fps instead.
>>
>>744550897
>4k came out literally 15 years ago and content still isn't optimized that well for it. fonts too small, UI not scaling properly, software glitches and hiccups more common, mostly due to increase in bandwidth required.
This is the craziest cope in the thread, I don't know of a single game that has glitches or hiccups from playing at 4K it simple doesn't exist, and games scale perfectly fine at 4K again I cannot think of a single game that doesn't just work out of the box at 4K as expected. I think WoW is the only game I've had to adjust the UI scaling and it takes 2 seconds. You just live in a delusional fantasy land

>>744554801
Shouldn't have. It did because of stupidity and the desire to sell screens.
Sometimes things get worse. Raising res is one of them. It is a reduction of graphics and gameplay. Hardware also made for higher res instead of more action, faster, prettier, etc. Artists have been limited and dissuaded from games because of it. Has probably wiped out the human race with not enough examples of great art done by people, less inspiration and imagination for multiple generations, them easier influenced by bad things, and made into invalid entities.
>>
>>744539336
I had a 4k monitor that I used with a 3090 for a while, but it got aged out very fast these last 3 years. I could still run shit on medium/low and turn on DLSS on newer games to get 60+, but games started looking like shit and unironically looked and ran better on my friend's PS5 pro at times. I was just gonna buy a 5090, but I cannot justify paying 4000 dollars for a fucking graphics card that's gonna age out as fast as my 3090 did anyways. The fact of the matter is, no one is optimizing shit anymore for PC and things are not gonna change anytime soon, so 4k is just a meme nowadays. I sold my 3090 and 4k monitor, and bought a 5080 and a top tier oled 1440p monitor. I have not regretted my decision for a second. Yeah, some things on the desktop are noticeably less sharp, but I rarely notice any difference in gaming and can play anything at 120 fps at max settings without issue now, and it looks much better than my old 4k monitor overall because I can now run everything maxed out, especially RE9 with path tracing which looks incredible. I have a pretty expensive 4k TV if I ever want to game at 4k, but I really don't have any desire to anymore.
>>

I was still using my beloved Dell S2716DG up until a few months ago when a power surge killed it. I tried everything to fix for days, but it is dead.
