What are the realistic alternatives to Windows for gaming in the big 26?

After a couple weeks with SteamOS, I think I can say it's not gonna cut it for me. The OS is fast and lean which is a nice change of pace from Windows, but it's ridiculously locked down and hand-holdy(which I guess makes sense since it's basically a console OS first)
>>

I dislike Linux but I hate Windows with a passion, enough to daily drive Kubuntu for probably over a year at this point. It's friendly enough that I've never learned bash or the file structure or anything because I've never needed to, and KDE Plasma looks pretty much the same as Windows, but better. Anyways for gaming I've had little to no issues. Almost all games run perfectly using Proton 9 or 10, and the ones that didn't (maybe two out of one hundred) I was able to run by just reading what other people did on protondb. In fact pretty much the only games that can't run on Linux are the ones BUILT to NOT run, i.e. Destiny 2 and League of Legends, whose developers purposefully block Linux users from running their games.

Also no forced updates, FUCK YOU OBAMA! YOU FUCKING NIGGER!
>>
>>744542139
The problem is that most fun games require an anti-cheat and they only run on windows, until that changes there is really no alternative. Most anti-cheats still run on windows 10, which is much less jeetefied than Hindus 11. Thankfully, linux is slowly Catching up and maybe we will be able to switch completely at the end of the decade.

There are none. Microsoft could release a gutted version of Windows 11 with all the critical modern advancements and none of the bloat. Leaving intact high compatibility with 32-bit software and such. They could call it "Windows Gaming Edition" or something and sell it for $300. It'd sell like crazy. I don't know why they don't.
>>
>>744543440
>The problem is that most fun games require an anti-cheat
Literally not a single game worth playing in history has required discrete anti cheat software. The fact that there is a population of players who go through great lengths to cheat is in itself an indictment that the game is not fun

There is nothing, just learn to get used to Windows 11 and debloat it as much as you can and choose to
There is no "magical" alternative and the only thing even close is getting a Mac
Linux is shit, always has been and always will be. There is a reason most linuxfags dual boot
>>
>>744543559
Because that would go against why windows exists in the first place. It is not an operating system, it is an information harvesting platform masquarading as an operating system. Everything that sits on top of the data harvesting is to distract from this fact, to obfuscate it. They give you these little options and sliders to give you the illusion that you can actually stop it, but we know now with the GDID that it is fundamentally impossible to stop windows from spying on you and harvesting your data. Why? Because that is where the real money is. They make INSANE amounts of money selling as much information as they can about you to advertisers. A lot of companies these days also do this.
>>
>>744545031
>There is a reason most linuxfags dual boot
the only reason people who use linux ever dualboot or run a VM has nothing to do with windows, it is because a piece of software they want to use was written to only work with windows. If that software had been written better and not been so locked down, it would not be a problem. No one actually WANTS to use windows. The more that people can get away with just using wine to use windows applications on linux the more linux usage goes up and the more windows usage goes down. You are not fooling anyone but yourself.
>>
>>744543640
I think even Debian has basic emulators for genesis/snes at this point. Assuming you don't run into that one driver issue. I hear they have ways to run programs outside the default manager now too, didn't try them..good luck if you do.

It's really only those big multiplayer shooters that require anticheat (Fortnite, Apex, etc.). I don't play any of those games so I've had 0 issues on Linux. And it's not like I only have single-player games, both Warframe and FFXIV run just fine.

What have you achieved by being a dualboot Windows other than boosting fake usage metrics for le gud os? If you dualboot to Windows...You're a Windows user. You didn't manage to avoid using Windows. You're using it with added steps. Just skip a step and boot directly to Windows to run your program.
>>

Of course that doesn't prevent Stockholm syndrome rape victims like you from liking the dick so they hold onto that inertia
>>
>>744547039
Because it has been the default for so long thats just what everyone uses. They have had extremely sucessful market share for a long time simply through advertising and extremely dubious tactics against their competition. In fact, when linux first came out they did everything they could to sabotage it. Once they realized they couldnt, they shifted to literally having microsoft employees contribute to the linux kernel, presumably to try to subtly enthittify it from the inside.

i have a dualboot with windows because I have a single piece of software that my university requires (lockdown browser+respondus), which is essentially a spyware application that lets them take control of your computer and make sure you dont do anything they dont want you to during testing. It is extremely invasive and legitimately spyware, and beacuse of this it is incompatible with linux. In fact it is so invasive, even trying to run it through a VM is a risk because if they catch you doing anything fishy they can just expel you from your uni.

I do this because I have to, because this shitty piece of spyware that my university requires I use for online courses will not work with linux, nor should it.
>>
>>744547178
So your saying that the reason a software developer focuses on the OS with a 90 percent market share instead of a single digit user base OS is because they were "nepotistically raped" and have stockholm syndrome?

im NTA but yes. people generally dislike new things and they are so used to using windows that they mere idea of a different operating system causes a nervous breakdown for most. It's not that, it's just that windows is what comes preinstalled on their computers. 90% of people don't really give a fuck what OS they're using.
>>
>>744547136
It's not about 'fault'. If an app is written for OSX/macOS, yes It has everything to do with Mac. (I can acknowledge that Mac has those apps going for them and Windows doesn't.) You're saying if an app is written for Windows, it has nothing to do with Windows...somehow. I won't say Windows is actually great and blame it on Mac for making something that runs on them lol.

The reality is that windows is the best option and nothing compares
you can try linux but it's not going to magically double your framerate due to being barebones
it's all just poorfags coping and blaming the OS when their pc is just garbage, that's why you see people with high end computers using windows while the only ones using linux are poorfags trying to salvage their pc that struggles to run a browser

I've been using Bazzite for like a year now. Honestly, Windows is probably better, but Bazzite runs all my games and I'm too lazy to switch back. The only thing I miss is modding Mass Effect, the entire mod scene for those games relies on a specific mod manager program that only works for Windows. Also I've noticed that Monster Hunter Wilds specifically has significantly worse performance, I've got a fairly high-end system and I still have to disable ray tracing.

I actually got that one working on linux
but I dont remember how. Aparantly if you join their discord they can help you get it running. IIRC i just had to install a few prerequisites with protontricks and install me3tweaks itself using protontricks as well so that it gets installed inside the mass effect legendary edition directory.

If that's your only problem with SteamOS then just install literally any other Linux distribution.
Generally speaking, the alternatives to Windows are just Linux and MacOS, and the later has been all but completely abandoned as a gaming platform. So if you hate Windows then you want Linux, and SteamOS being "locked down" (by which I assume you mean immutable) is the exception when it comes to Linux.

Ubuntu was the de facto standard for a long time. In fact you can still just install Ubuntu and run games on it without much trouble. The best and realistic alternative to windows is Linux, whether you hate it or not. It's free and as bare as software of that caliber gets. The fact that it runs most regular things is a miracle in itself. As much as I believe in it, I'm not using it and probably will not in the near future. You just gotta sit down and learn it and accept that certain things just won't work or won't be supported. Im not even sure what have to happens for Linux to blow up into the masses if PewDiePie couldn't do it.

Microsoft have to pull of some outrageous shit for people to finally snap, something alongside what happens to unity game engine. They almost did it with all the forced AI bullshit but rolled back a litte...
