First song? Well, keep going just so you can have that milestone cleared. Then from then on, I would scrap it if it turns out like this again. Not being mean, just trying to make you better. We all have to start somewhere, and it's an impressive thing that you're willing to try something new and risk failing at first.

Arent the japanese supposed to be against AI?
>>
>>744545393
It actually sounds like he's making the reasonable argument, that AI has been transforming our lives for the past few decades.

"AI" is way more than just annoying chatbots and junk generators. AI is things like web search engines, navigation systems, and so much more. Only absolute retards think "AI" is just chatgpt.

One example: AI in video games refers to how a non-player character behaves and makes decisions in a game. Or DAWs is a good example like he said. Lots of things we have gotten used to is AI and people don't realize that.
>>
i know absolutely nothing about music theory
is it something that you can wing?
>>
>>744545393
>>744546052
>>744545393
But of course I could be misreading it and he's actually arguing in favor of generative AI as a replacement for artistic skill. The reason i thought it was the former though is this line:
>However, I wonder if we share the same definition of AI.
>>
>>744546095
You think Green Day knows music theory? Most of the songs they wrote while they were high on meth. It depends on what you want to write, but for simple things like songs with 3-4 chords, you can just copy your favorite musicians.

>but yes learn music theory because it will eventually be beneficial, probably idk
>>
>>744546246
Green Day sucks

Learn the theory lazy faggot

Yeah, they do suck.
Post your work though, let's see what your supposed understanding of theory has helped you achieve. Also demonstrate how you used theory to compose it instead of copying one of your favorite artists' songs and its structure.

I swear it's always retarded pseud faggots like you who pretend to be smart while not doing anything.

It's difficult so don't get too discouraged on your first 100+ tracks.
>>
>>744546389
I was needlessly harsh in my reply here: >>744546515
I think anons struggle hard with composition, so theory will benefit them immensely.

For example, if you look at this track: >>744543734 there is no structure. The song doesn't seem to be going anywhere and it's not satisfying. It just feels very random. That's something that a lot of beginners do because they think music is just random. Actually, there is an order to music that your brain recognizes. There are rules you should learn.

Learning to use some random software is the easy part.

the progression is the same as with any language. everybody ever who could ever compose anything worthwhile learned music this way. i don't say *how* because that varies. my claim is only that the general progression is always the same. compare it to writing/reading english

STEP 1: ALPHABET AND PHONICS (most people already know this to some degree, but being aware of it while playing is an entirely different matter and could take a lot of time depending on background)
>understanding 12 tone equally tempered system
>how intervals sound and are constructed (perfect fifth, major third, etc.)
>hearing something and humming the main melody back
>being able to sing a major scale

STEP 2: GRAMMAR AND VOCABULARY, SENTENCES & PARAGRAPHS (everything that happens after you're first able to sound out words. takes a lot of consistent practice. just like you had to do writing/reading practice and vocab/spelling tests in early elementary school)
>rhythm rhythm rhythm rhythm...
>dynamics while playing/singing
>reading basic music w/ metronome
>key signatures
>more complex scales (modes, diminished, altered, blues, etc.)
>circle of fifths (can move around it and jump anywhere with ease)
>chord patterns (chord substitutions, modulations, changes, etc.)
>you should be able to hear a chord of up to 5 notes, sing/identify every constituent note of it, name the intervals, and identify the type
>given a chord name (most common types, maj min 6, 7, add9, add11, add13, flat five, flat nine, etc.) and inversion you should be able to name its notes in under a few seconds
>you should be able to quickly transcribe melodies given basic information (key signature, reference tone, etc.) using knowledge of intervals and scale degrees

STEP 3: THE TOP LEVEL. THE MEDIUM AS AN ART FORM (literary analysis in middle school and high school. themes. symbols. subtext. motifs)
>leitmotifs
>voicing
>counterpoint
>texture
>instrumentation
>telling a story with the music.
>>
>>744549135
CONTINUED

>but what about *favorite composer* he said he learned everything himself by just playing a lot
he's lying. there is only one way to reach the top (creating moods/stories with sound) and that's from the bottom. just like with language
>phonics
>grammar and vocabulary
>literature
it's
>tones, intervals, basic scales, pitch patterns
>harmony, rhythm, "vocabulary" (scales, chords, licks, whatever), ear training
>composition

if you neglect step 1, then step 2 will make no sense or seem like a bunch of meaningless rules that you memorize. then you become a soulless theoryfag
if you neglect step 2, then at step 3 you will lack the flexibility to fully express yourself. the music will seem derivative or overly rigid
>>
I think I have a gift for music, or an aptitude for it. I could probably be impressive if I learned some music theory.

I like these. They are very atmospheric. Not everything needs to be super melodic like Undertale or Touhou, as those things can get very distracting when you ideally just want some background music for roaming a level.

nta, I already had some stuff like reaper and famistudio downloaded from way back, how would you even start? Learn music theory and watch tutorials for your chosen DAW?
>>
more important to practice than just grind music theory 2bh
https://voca.ro/1UKytk5BFgcg
>>
>>744545393
Generative AI = Splice. Any situation where you would be comfortable buying a premade sound, that’s a situation where AI use is unobjectionable. Using AI to generate large portions of your song is like turning on preset loops in an arranger keyboard and calling yourself a composer. Using AI to generate a vocal sample you chop up and process is just Splice with more water consumption.
>>
>>744545393
music barely makes money, it makes sense it's becoming more like this
>>
>>744556864
Unbelievably kino. It sounds like I'm walking through a modern city in a 2D top-down JRPG.
>>
>>744556864
Practicing is grinding music theory, though. “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture”; you have to do things and listen to how they sound to develop an understanding of music. That IS music theory. “Grinding” it amounts to drilling how different musical elements sound in relation to one another and in a given context. You don’t need to read about what V-I means nearly as much as you need to hear what it sounds like and explore the kinds of things you get with that sound.

>>
>>744552491
This reeks of “made it in tracker software”. And by that I mean, if you didn’t know a THING about music and just clicked notes on and off in any modern DAW, the rhythm would be more coherent by default because you have to WORK to get that far off grid

>>
How does this sound?
>>>/wsg/6206966
>>
>>744557641
Unbiased opinion from some random guy here:
It sounds good but generic idk how to say it. The first few seconds remind me of some YouTuber's intro music or something... now I need to know what song that was.
>>
>>744557480
I mean magical 8-bit is a VST
>>
>>744556797
Get some basic music theory down and then learn some of the tools. I'd probably look for something generic like how the different parameters on a synth function. Most of them use the same pieces and terms so it should transfer between each tool (EG attack, decay, sustain, release, wet/dry, compression, delay, reverb, etc)
You can probably look into DAW-specific tutorials if you really want. Once you have a basic grasp of everything, try recreating a track from an artist you like that isn't going too crazy on the sound design. It'll let you get a better grasp on how a track is constructed.
>>
>>744557919
Then what DAW are you using and why are you turning grid snapping off
>>
>>744558032
If you’re new to sound design, I highly recommend downloading Vital (as a free option there really isn’t a better “modern workhorse” synth, you could crack Serum 2 or Phase Plant but Vital is a wonderful starter and a crazy good synth) and then following along with Eric Bowman
https://www.youtube.com/@EricBowman/videos?ra=m
There aren’t a lot of sound design tutorials in the space of “okay today we’re approximating [x] sound with the same tool you already know”, it helps you understand the basics without gear chasing
>>
>>744558032
This stuff is like wizardry to me. I tried playing with all the knobs on the VSTs but I never was able to figure out what was going on. On top of that, trying to recreate tracks that I like always turns into a fool's errand when I inevitably fail to find an instrument that sounds even remotely close to what I hear in the original.

Then there's stuff like filters or whatever that you can apply to an instrument, like Fruity Love Filter or Reverb 2 etc., and I'm just kinda winging it with these.
>>
>>744558032
Will do, I did try to copy a simple song like a Luigi's mansion theme and mix a bit of Ghosts and Goblins with it, but it turned out flat and shitty, mI also probably need to put my grid on 1/2 beat, the sounds are off key.

His argument is literally "accept it first, then find a way to coexist!"

You have no idea what an argument is if you take that as an argument

So I'd probably go with a sample-based instrument on that one. Try grabbing spitfire audio labs and download their music box instrument. I believe they also have a free orchestral VST too.

>>744557868
It is just one part, the song got way too repetitive and need to cut some more pieces out of it but I agree it sounds generic.

How does someone with no composing knowledge even start making a song? Anyone can fraud their way into drawing something or writing a story. But music is fucking impossible to make something coherent sounding without taking courses.
>>
>>744562038
You simply can't. It's too hard to get into and kind of a waste of time with AI right around the corner. You're just reinventing the wheel now and a little bit of a Luddite if you think people should still be writing music by hand.
>>

I see this argument a lot when it comes to drawings, but then you look at what the person is drawing and it's just soulless generic gay-furry porn. I wonder if it's the same for music.
>>
>>744562038
Watch videos on learning music theory, then mixing, then arranging
>>
>>744562038
depends on iq
it boils down to having an orchestra (or even an instrument) available
back in the day this used to be expensive, literally, but also in time and noise production... that's why so many faggots play guitar, as it's cheap, convenient, and doesn't make much noise

once you spend six months doing that, you can hire a tutor and ask specific questions... and he/she will say exactly what theory says about that thing (and how it's called), and where to branch out from there

learning an instrument or composition from zero is VERY wasteful when you have the opportunity to do what nobody for the past 500 years of "classical music" could do
