I still remember being so hyped for this intro and then the slow realization an hour or so in that Skyrim wasn't going to be the Morrowind with Oblivion quests that I was hoping for, and that it was, in fact, the most dumbed down Elder Scrolls to date instead.

Why did they put so much effort into Ralof's kino monologue here but then do him so dirty at the end of the game when you meet back up with him? He barely remembers you and there's no closure or comradery later, just coldness. Same with Hadvar too. In fact I don't even know where Hadvar ends up.

Dragon's Dogma topped it less than a year after its original release. Better combat. Better story. Better dialogue. Better classes. Better dragon.
Skyrim is for roleplaying, unironically. Unfortunately, the world is so awkward and poorly designed, it falls on the player to write a ton of headcanon and ignore the bugs and lapses in logic, not to mention NPCs repeating the same lines of dialogue every five minutes if you accidentally walk within ten feet of them.
Skyrim ain't bad, but it ain't the shit either.

This shit always bugged me. He asks for your favourite color and that's a completely subjective question. I get that the knight repeated the previous guy's anwser instead of saying his own favourite one but what if you like two colors equally or just can't decide at all? Will you be launched if you can't decide on one? Will you be launched if you say that you can't decide? Can you just go into a long monologue on what "favourite" means like Xavier from XRA?

The only roleplaying potential in Skyrim is deciding what quests to not do and what skills to not level, because pretty much every quest can only be completed in one specific way and you can get every skill to 100 quite easily. It doesn't help that the world and every character in it is extremely shallow to the point of feeling like an abridged parody version of a world we should have gotten.
Skyrim is the most overrated 5/10 game every created.

This is unironically the reason I think the Imperials are the bad guys. "Trying to cross the border" could literally have just meant "walked up to an official border crossing, asked to be let it (because you are a Nord who was born in Skyrim) only for the Imperials to just arbitrarily decided to fucking kill you". Its way too vague to mean anything concrete, and the Imperial commander bitch just decides to kill you despite the very large possibility of everything being a huge misunderstanding.
Fuck Imperials and Cyrodiil dick-riders.

Hey, retard. It might be too difficult for a dipshit to understand but punishing people for the crimes of others is fucking retarded and evil. Executing some random guy with no evidence or even an investigation because he just happens to be in the general area of where you found a "dangerous criminal" is wrong, and she clearly only did it because she couldn't be fucked with putting in the effort to do the bare fucking minimum to make sure she wasn't about to kill some dude who was just trying to come back to his home country. Like she couldn't have just said "He's not on the list? That's unusual. Put him in the dungeon for now, we'll look into it after killing Ulfric" like someone who isn't an incompetent psychopath who was given more power than they deserved.
Imperial fags really will come up with the silliest fucking reasons to justify the retarded and evil shit the shitty fantasy Romans do.

It's called good art direction. Photorealism is impossible anyways, what really matters is cohesion around a theme and a balance between believable and fantastical.

always wondered what he meant by that. Was the dragonborn crossing the border into Skyrim, or out? They seem a bit far into the mainland to be crossing into it, but then why would the dragonborn stick around if they were crossing out of the country? the road you start on does lead into Cyrodil, but it's not like there was a route in between the countries in Oblivion it was sort of a massive impassable mountain range to the north.
>>
>>744559173

>"Transcribe the past and map the future"
This was an official screenshot posted by the main Elder Scrolls Twitter account on Dec 31, 2020 with the above quote. People are somehow still wondering whether TES VI will take place in Hammerfell or not when this image makes it incredibly fucking clear:
>"Transcribe the past and map the future"
>three lights
>light nº1 is in Solitude aka Skyrim's capital during TES V aka "the past"
>light nº2 is next to a bunch of ESO coins representing the-then current Greymoor expansion aka "the present"
>light nº3 is smack in the middle of Hammerfell aka "the future"

It's funny that despite how many times they've re-released Skyrim, the dialogue pacing in the intro is still completely out of whack so the Imperial woman is still asking the sentries what they see when Alduin has already landed lmao

I like the Skyrim world the most, the setting, size, northern snowy climate, music is all kino. But true, when it comes to actual rpg mechanics and we'll written missions with choices and menaingful lore Skyrim is complete shit at that compared to morrowind. Skyrim is like "here, you got your perfect ready to go sandbox world game, mod the fuck out of it and have fun" while morrowind is for actual roleplay lore experience.

Skyrim isnt even an RPG, the number of quests that allow you to choose what to do can be counted on one hand, your character "build" affects only the flavor of combat youll be using to kill things as you progress trough the game exactly as you always have and yet somehow its marketed as an RPG and people fall for it.

But its what most people choose to do because thats what the gameplay pivots to. No matter what gear and strategy you choose the result will be the same, why bother boking NPCs that dont react any different to magic, arrows or axes when you can just stealth kill shit a mile away, loot and quickly move on, the game does not reward you for any particular playstyle outside of this one being the fastests and it becomes aparent extremely quickly.

I have zero hopes for TESVI, I saw the Bethesda devs protesting video today and I can guarantee 90% of those faggots weren't even with the company before 2011. Bethesda released two extremely mediocre, lukewarm received games since then.

Its even funnier when they have THE most easy, freely available form of market research available on how to improve their game by simply opening Nexus and filtering by most downloaded mods. Todd and his cronies clearly don't give a shit anymore so why should I as a customer.

Skyrim was made by a core team of 100 people, Bethesda now has over 500 core employees and DOZENS of supporting studios all over the world and they can't even bring a tenth of the soul they had during the Morrowind to Skyrim era.

You stupid niggerfaggot. You braindead ape. Skyrim has such atrocious fucking quests and static world that it is boring as fuck and a chore to play and no amount of mods can fix it. You clearly weren't here when Skyrim dropped, everyone was shitting on it, zoom zoom. Because it dumbed everything down even more and even removed magic creation and stats, both a staple of the series. The ONLY thing Skyrim proved upon was the world exploration and dungeons because more than one guy worked on it, but so what? I play these games for the quests and immersion, not just the dungeons (which are still shitty anyway and 90% of them are just one long corridor with an exit at the end, which is far more braindead than any dungeon in Oblivion or Morrowind).

What quests? You ask someone about Oblivion quests, they always say Whodunit or A Brush With Death. Maybe Paranoia. They never mention 80% of daedric quests which are "go into generic cave and kill bandits", like Azura's or Vile's or Meridia's or Namira's; or 90% of other quests which are that mutliplied. Oblivion doesn't have a Blackreach. It doesn't have a Frostflow Lighthouse. It doesn't have an In My Time of Need, discussed to this very day. It doesn't have a Rise in the East with Japhet's Folly. It doesn't let you find daedric quests organically, like helping a priest with a town having nightmares which leads you into creating a dream potion which takes you to the past, or partaking in a drinking contest which has you retracing your comical steps across Skyrim, or entering Azura's Star in a unique environment where you get to see a soul gem from inside, or what seemed like a random dungeon rewarding you with a talkative beacon, or the uncovering of a secret cannibal cult involving named NPCs in one of the province's major Holds. Oblivion doesn't have a Rebel's Cairn or Lost to the Ages, quests obtained from reading books in the world. It doesn't have a Book of Love, where you're an agent of Mara helping people romantically, or Blood on the Ice where you track down a serial killer. It doesn't have a Forsworn Conspiracy+No One Escapes Cidhna Mine combo, nor does it have you paying an archeologist to dig an ancient crypt for you which slowly turns him mad, or tracing a pirate's old treasure which rewards you with his unique gear, or on the other hand purposefully turning a lighthouse off so you can pillage a boat then track those that betrayed you down to their unique, ship themed giant water cave.

No matter how much you may fellate the exceptions to the rule, like Where Spirits Have Lease, Oblivion utterly PALES in comparison to the effort put into Skyrim's quests and dungeons being straight upgrades to what came before.
>>
>>744585606
Yeah, seeing the quests go from Morrowind to Oblivion to Fallout 3 I was really excited to see them be amazing in Skyrim. Too bad that didn't work out. And it's been downhill ever since, they completely stopped trying.

>>744585681
>still more magic than the skyrim questline
Quite literally false. At no point in any Mages Guild quest in Morrowind are you forced to use magic. Skyrim, and admittedly Oblivion too, force you to use spells. Can you try and use exploits to bypass it like ymfah did? Sure, you can try and fly through a window with a bucket or let companions shoot the magic for you, but none of that changes how elements like the pendant wall in Saarthal, the Mzulft Oculory or the fire/ice walls in Labyrinthian force you to get involved in magics, be them your own or those of an enchanted staff, which is something I was at no point forced to do in previous games sans Vahtacen.

Akavir has people and potentially snake people that like to invade tamriel and get BTFO'd from time to time, the ancient ancestors of the nords and basically all humans come from Atmora (which some theorise is actually an flat nirn ice wall with many realms beyond) but who knows if anyone is still there

And the other fun thing is that the ocean off the west coast has entire civilizations of underwater crab people called hadolids but sadly the only game they show up in is ESO

>Rikka
Rikke wasn't at Helgen. The blame is completely on an unnamed Imperial Commander who you have to fight in the Ralof route in that quest. Tullius had no knowledge of it.

It's speculation but I believe that the Imperial commander just wanted to make sure that they didn't leave any room for another future uprising, so they planned to execute everyone there regardless. The Thalmor were attending and we see Tullius converse with them on horseback earlier. Later on we find the Thalmor Dossier on Ulfric so we know that the Thalmor have a vested interest in keeping the war ongoing. They could've easily snatched one of the prisoners, indoctrinated them, and groomed them into becoming another Ulfric. That's probably what some Imperials feared would happen if they let anyone go and didn't rush to kill them. The whole execution was just a facade to begin with so they could please the Thalmor and maintain the illusion of order and justice, a political move essentially that no one really wanted but became necessary.

The Mages Guild questline? The one that takes the most barebones, utterly simplistic and childish approach to the necromantic theme, without actually exploring it at all just telling you who's right and who's wrong, and which turned Mannimarco into an utter fucking clown to the point people still make fun about it 20 years later? The same Mannimarco that best case scenario at high levels, knows only four spells, doesn't have a magicka pool big enough for one of them, can only cast the other ones once before running out of mana he starts attacking you with a regular unenchanted silver dagger, while his Necromancer class specializes in Blunt but not Blade? Jesus Christ.
>And then you have Shivering Isles
A DLC that could only work in Oblivion specifically because of how ugly and stupid looking the NPCs in the base game were, which SI took advantage of, and even then it paled with Dawnguard and Dragonborn's additions.

probably because i don't think that's good game design either, retard.
i will say that morrowind at the very least had the much better concept in mind having players needing certain skill levels to progress in rank (even if way too low). the issue with morrowind is that 90% of your skill progression is you sitting in a room paying money to a master skill teacher.
>>
>>744587036
It's the opposite. Playing Fallout 3 was the moment I realized Bethesda had fallen off, and that they were going to make only theme park games from there on out. 95% of quests in the game just go "Yay you completed it!" and nothing changes in the world at all. Nearly all of my fun came just from exploring until I ran out of things to discover.

Who the fuck praised Oblivion's dungeon design? The point is that Skyrim's dungeons seem more involved but they're all literally a corridor sans a few exceptions while the others had more complex layouts on average. Oblivion has the excuse of one guy having to do all of them. Also at least Morrowind's had super cool rewards hidden everywhere instead of randomly generated loot. Plus it had verticality and there were definitely more dungeons than just one or two that did. Skyrim's should've been a step up in every way, ESPECIALLY when it sacrificed so many other things, and yet you just end up with "yeah they're passable and a few are notable".
>>
>>744587714
But people do care about the portals, npcs talk about how scared they are in quite a few of the radiant conversations that happen

Oblivion has charm but it's still the weakest modern Bethesda game not called Fallout 4. The world, as beautiful as it is, is much emptier than the worlds in Fallout 3 or Skyrim. You weren't meant to explore it like you do in FO3 or Skyrim because the game gives you the ability to fast travel immediately to any city.

Fallout 3 was the first game to have a dedicated level design team and it shows. Almost every Oblivion gate feels the same or procedurally-generated. Holds are far more varied and visually distinct in Skyrim than Oblivion. Even the cities are more memorable in 3 and Skyrim.

NTA, but Manny's fight isn't EVERYTHING that the mages guild questline is about. You're hung up over the final dude when there's a lot of stuff leading up to him(The mana not being enough to cast his spell is a pretty bad oversight though). There's the initiation around the map, puzzles, betrayal, research. You can make your own black soul gems if you've been paying attention to when and where it needs to happen. Writing the whole thing off just because of how it ends is not a good character trait, anon. The fighters guild also mogs everything in Skyrim

To this DAY there's no other game with a deeper AI. There is no RPG where NPCs travel to other cities and can potentially just fucking die. There is no RPG where people will decide to steal food if they run out and have no money and can then get killed by the guards. It is a huge shame Bethesda decided to just abandon the whole fucking system instead of iterating on it.

>but one actively makes you use spells in some of its quests to progress.
making a player use a spell they can use with literally zero experience in the needed skill is trash content. gameplay that has zero reason to exist.
"whoah you did the thing that let your axe-wielder character pretend they were a mage for a second, congrats!"
The result is a mage player who rolls there eyes at the baby challenge and a melee player who rolls there eyes at the idea that they
"technically" used magic. just padded content that feels like it was made for an actual toddler and would be better off excluded completely rather than insulting the player's intelligence.

Aren't >>744586087 corridors?
>Oblivion has the excuse of one guy having to do all of them
Their priorities during development being so retarded they put one guy in charge of dungeons in the dungeon crawler game isn't an excuse, but anindictment
>at least Morrowind's had super cool rewards hidden
Did it? Because most dungeons don't have rewards, period. You go in, you eat two bonemeal, loot a cheap amulet, maybe a Scroll of Healing if you're lucky, and you leave. Eleidon's Ward or the Daedric Gauntlets are exceptions, not the rule. Hell, the former is right next to a main quest and the latter *is* a main quest dungeon. Again, if you've played Morrowind you know most dungeons are both short and empty, and the places where you can Levitate to find "le cool loot" are exceptions often directly tied with quests, like meeting Mara during the Imperial Cult. The actual moment to moment looting and dungeoneering was perfected in Skyrim, which is why the game's been played daily for 15 years straight.

Maybe you can call it the weakest if all you care about is going into dungeons. I play these games for the quests. Also, the holds look more varied and can be more immediately visually striking on the surface, but they're pathetically small, especially the capital, which breaks my immersion. I also don't think that's being fair to Oblivion, each city has its own architecture, aesthetic and climate. You had cities in the mountains, near the coast and even in the swamps. Anvil, Skingrad, Bravil, Leyawinn, Bruma, Imperial City I'd all call memorable.
I do agree that Bethesda improved on that "wow factor" when it comes to the cities overall, though Oblivion's was always going for a more refined aesthetic which Bethesda never pursued again.

I downloaded Skyrim Net a while ago and it's fucking great, but how exactly do I get my character to stop obsessing over the guards casting spells on each other in cities and mentioning it unprompted constantly? She is completely mindbroken. I have tried thinking "This is normal and should be ignored" multiple times, I have tried adding "does not care about guards casting spells on each other and will never mention it" to directly to her bio and she still fucking does it constantly. Even NPCs will chime in with their "But how does this affect you personally?" comments in response, but she won't stop.

Clearly you didn't do a very good job exploring the dungeons then. I genuinely have to have a mental list that includes something like over half the dungeons that I need to avoid if I want to RP a weakling. And that's another thing, Bethesda never fucking went back to having static loot. There's nothing like going to a location with high level enemies and making it out alive with a crazy reward. Unbalanced? Maybe. But fun as hell.

Talking about sequels appealing to casuals, how come Oblivion has unlocked fast travel to every major city from the microsecond you leave the sewers even if you haven't been to them yet? And why doesn't Oblivion have in-universe fast travel, while we're at it? Because sure you can "technically" not fast travel but quest designers didn't take that into account so quests are designed to take you all over the map without the consideration for diegetic travel that Morrowind had, so in reality you'll just waste time traveling through the same empty road for the 70th time a playthrough while trying to do the Fighters Guild which takes you all over Cyrodiil, with no random encounters or unmarked locations to find and with a world that outside of dungeons seems completely empty and sterile.
You know what game changed that back? Skyrim. Leaving aside how the actual world was made that much more detailed in exploration, locations to find, shrines, random encounters, height levels that obfuscate travel, etc. they actually added carriages you can take just like the Silt Striders of old, look at that. And once you've advanced enough in the game's quests you can even fly dragons yourself! Fallout 4 had the same thing with the ability to call Vertibirds and to have them fly you in real time. The official survival mode even eliminates fast travel, and it works for those games in a way it wouldn't in Oblivion or Fallout 3 precisely because they brought some of the Morrowind options back. Why wasn't pic related in Oblivion? Why did I need to pay for Frostcrag Spire back in the day to get access to a basic ass function the Mages Guild operates in-universe? Sounds like a badly designed and thought out world to me.

Keep in mind, Skyrim is a game that never leaves the player's point of view. There are no cutscenes per se, no scripted walk and talk sections (NPCs can walk but at any point you can fuck off to the other side of the world), you're always in control of your character. It's surprising they got enough of these to work, given the restrictions and especially for 2011.

Ill Met by Moonlight is one of the few decent quests in Skyrim. its a shame that if you do it before visiting the place, Bolar's Oathblade and Bolar's note will disappear, so you want to visit the place and loot it before doing that quest. Also, Saviour's Hide is top-notch, although not as powerful as it should be, and is perfect for female chars. Its not level-scaled, so do ing that quest early will give you a really good boost.

I wish playstyles centered around crafting/consumables weren't so tedious to play in practice. This goes not just for skyrim but for other bethesda games like NV. My favorite playstyle is actual an alchemist, but then you're at the mercy of what ingredients you can buy/scrounge, and you're always going to be cucked by carry weight. So that means constantly needing to manage how many potions/poisons you're carrying, and every time you want to make more stuff at an alchemist table, you need to travel back to your home base, take all your ingredients out, make whatever you need, then put them all back in storage. Same goes with other craft-centric playstyles like focusing on survival, explosives, or thrown weapons in NV.

There's not a term for it as far as I know but the older methods of rendering are a lot "cleaner" than modern rendering. Back then a polygon was just a polygon. Slap a texture on it, maybe a bump map if you're feeling fancy, and let the lighting engine apply a darkening gradient on it.
Now rendering is about how much you can obfuscate all of that. That simple polygon is now subdivided at a pixel level, each of those sub-polygons needs to have 20 different light mapping textures so the new lighting engine can simulate how rays of light interact with the specific material, and all of this gets slathered with temporal anti-aliasing which basically just copies the previous frame and sets it to 20% opacity, leading to a smeared complex mess of lighting effects that are all competing to turn a pixel dark or light.

I've played Skyrim twice. The first time I got sidetracked too much, and couldn't bother exploring anymore. Couldn't even finish the main quest. The second time, I just rushed through the main quest as best I could, along with the Legion first, with the occasional side shit here and there. Did the Vampire DLC, but then was too burnt out to explore anymore and do the other DLC.

Both time I went back to playing Morrowind. Played it for the first time in Iraq on deployment a couple years ago and loved it. Replay it every now and then with Tamriel Rebuilt and it's great.

Based Iraq/v/ro

I already played Oblivion and Skyrim a few times (only finished the main story for each once tho)
Just started Morrowind last week, which I was always hesitant in playing bc the barrier to entry is a lot higher than the other games, but been really surprised by the level of depth and maturity in the writing that isn't quite as present in Oblivion and Skyrim. I do miss the NPC simulation from the other games tho

This sounds good in theory until you realize that almost all of Skyrim's base mechanics are dogshit and can be vastly improved with mods.

Skyrim Animeporn moderns are autistic or mentally ill and if I wanted another game, I'd just play another game.

they both offer a bunch of dialogues after the helgen escape and while they stay in Riverrun. They also talk to you during all civil war missions where you two are assigned to the same post. I believe they even comment on you advancing in ranks and they themselves also advance. They treat you like a friend during those lines and are happy to see you still alive after meeting you again since the last posting.
they are total bros with you man..
they are the canon best friends for your character

Yeah, Skyrim had a massive impact on internet pop culture in the early 10s. Fuck, I still see Nazeem memes from time to time. It was the last culturally relevant game Bethesda released.

Oblivion, FO3, NV and Skyrim all came out before Microsoft bought them. Bethesda is notorious for talking big and failing to deliver. When you see what they had planned for FO3 it would have felt much more alive than the boring empty nothing it turned out to be.

I think its better he doesn't have a quest. Sometimes a character can just stand out from their presence alone. Hes also in the first city you'll enter so that already has a lasting impact than anyone else. Theres a reason nobody remembers the other Jarls beyond Balgruuf.

Anyone here try the skyrimNet plugin yet?

Haven't touched Modded Skyrim or Skyrim at all in over five years.

Been thinking about doing a Nord mercenary traveling with a Khajiit caravan Romance play through. Seeing as how all the vanilla characters in the game are mapped to the plugins memory database.

>I do miss the NPC simulation from the other games tho
Me too. Luckily there are a lot of mods that attempt to reintroduce such things. I really do think that Morrowind has a much better foundation, and if there's anything from the other games you want, chances are there's a script or something that will do it. I love how active the community for it is after all these years

Anon, plenty of people remember Maven, or the crazy Ravencrone grandma in Morthal, or the asshole young Falkreath jarl, or the bald ass Markarth dude that's beefing with the Silver-Bloods, and obviously Elisif and Ulfric.

the aura and vibe were killer back then, and the engine itself still lets you do things other games cant. Its difficult to herd a simulated open world into being a game.

Ulfric being groomed only works because he was a jarl's son. The Dragonborn at the start is just some nobody, he'd be worthless to the Thalmor. And killing all the prisoners so there'd be no witnesses would make more sense but doesn't work since the people of Helgen were all watching the execution of Ulfric. She was just a lazy, evil bitch.

There was actually a cut conversation between Elenwen and Tullius that would've been heard as you rode past them as they're on horseback where Elisif demands that the prisoners be taken into Thalmor custody per the terms of the White-Gold Concordat, and Tullius flat out refuses and tells her to fuck off. Some of it was actually restored in a mod for the game:
