is it that much of a game changer or at least worth the price?
>>

yes
>>
It's good for gaymen, but it's really phenomenal for movies.

>is it that much of a game changer
Yes
>at least worth the price?
Harder question to answer since on top of being more expensive they'll also probably have a shorter lifespan, at least on average
>>
>>744547728
Like everything you get used to it fast but before that happens yes it is night and day, IPS will be unplayable after you get used to OLED
>>
it aint worth it if you game more than 2 hours per day, you'll 100% get burn in, people even take 1--2 hours breaks to ease the panel. right now oled is a meme, twice as bright half as long
>>
From what I understand after doing some research woled is worse than qdoled at ideal conditions (no lighting in your room) but if there's some light even if it's indirect like sun leaking around curtains or whatever then woled quickly becomes vastly superior while qdoled starts to show blacks as purples.
>>
>>744547996
Holy shit what is this stupidity? Dude is just making shit up as he goes.
>>
>>744548046
QDOLED is straight up better. WOLED just came earlier and what normies are adjusted to. Go to any big electronics store that has TVs for display and the best ones are all QD from color, viewing angles, the stuff that makes normies turn their head with shopping. WOLED is only recommended if you're on a budget like all the AOC/Gigabyte cheap oleds are WOLED.
>>
OLED is a massive game changer for games and movies. I can't ever go back. It would be like going from HD back to SD. Just don't go 4K like I did. That's a meme and it costs many times more to run games at that resolution.

From left to right woled, tandem woled (the most expensive by far), qdoled.

How they react to a well lit environment. Yes qdoled starts to turn blacks into magenta. Obviously you can have far less light than this, it's just a test, plus you need to account for it not being a naked eye observer.
>>
get ready for 500 posts about burn in from people that haven't looked at a modern panel and just parrot shit they heard 10 years ago

also the random retard saying he'll wait for miniLED when they're over $50,000 and have no indication they'll fix the pixel density issues any time soon
>>
>>744548397
any electronics store is going to have bright as fuck lights. the qd in person is still going to have better viewing angles and colors and no grey banding unlike woled.
>>
>>744548397
All the tandems I see on reddit have disgusting banding on grey.

I have a 240Hz 24.5 inches VA with 1ms response time, and it just fucking works even after many yrs. No OLED nor HDR meme can make me switch. Manufacturers should make "retro monitors" however. It would sell like hot cake.

No. It's scam tech that will fail you, by design. There is no good display tech btw.

I'm sitting in front of my desk when I use my computer.

Also, what was it I said? qdoled is superior in ideal light conditions while woled becomes better if you have to deal with some lighting. This >>744548397 seems to corroborate at least the last part of my post. Obviously that's an exaggerated environment but it does show the different behaviors I mentioned.
>>
>>744547728
Get an OLED TV if you're going to be a retard.
>But muh 2ms response time!!!
Isn't fucking real. OLED has so many fucking problems that have been talked about over and over in every thread. If you're going to buy a garbage OLED display just get a TV because the monitors are way overpriced and 4k on a tiny monitor KILLS details, no matter what retard tries to say otherwise.
>>
Yeah. I just have a black wallpaper with nothing on it. Monitor itself will turn off as well as ask to do a pixel thing every day or so. No burn in so far just buy a decent one on black friday

I use 4k projector with a 110" light grey screen. I have my Switch 2, Steam Machine, and 4k Panasonic Blu-ray player hooked up to it. What's more important for movies is resolution. What's more important for games is visual clarity. And having such a fuck huge screen gives me both.
>Quick response times
You will never use this unless you're some MLG gaymer.
>Burn in
It will happen on any display, it's just more prone on OLED because each pixel is used more. Ask anyone about subtitle burn in.
>4k
Basically useless for games because of the hardware demand, 1080p upscaled to 4k is more than enough. And before anyone says the I'm wrong just a reminder that there are barely any games actually designed for NATIVE 4k. Everything modern runs on fake frames and fake resolution.
>HDR
Absolute huge fucking meme for movies, but only good for SOME modern games, and only truly visible on OLED that can reach high brightness without washing out colors, which 80% of displays cannot do.

Those are woled, see discussion about w and qd earlier in this thread or elsewhere. Can't see if they're glossy or matte finish on a quick look. Some people really prefer one over the other. In my case I dislike how matte difuses the light all over the monitor and much prefer the glass like feeling of glossy.

Keep in mind your freensync/g-sync options depending if you're on AMD or nvidia. No budget OLED is going to have enough nits for HDR to really come into play (you'd want over 600 nits) so the poor HDR can mostly be ignored as it won't really matter anyway. 0.3ms instead of 0.2 like most monitors but shouldn't matter either.
>>
>>744547728
I bought a 32" 4k OLED for 800 dollars, the trade off was a max of ~150hz but my 4070Ti wasnt going to reliably go above that for games that are worth the trouble to do that anyway

I like it, had it for about 15 months now with no burn in even though i practically live at my monitor as a nolife chud

I do have to baby it though
>>
>>744548253
Movies especially because they really push the HDR. A good 4K transfer with Dolby Vision is better than seeing it in theaters.
>>
>>744549324
Sorry babe but my projector + screen + steam machine + switch 2 is more expensive than your Dell PC with your OLED tiny monitor.
>>
>>744550409
That's because 99% of theatres still have old bulb projectors with a fucked yellowed screen. HDR/Dolby Vision is genuinely a scam because 99.9% of the films you watched were not made for HDR. Its like people wanting a remastered Dolby Atmos or 7.1 surround soundtrack for Citizen Kane, which came out in 1.0 aka mono. Lawrence of Arabia wasn't shot for HDR. The cinematographer of Blade Runner wasn't thinking about HDR. Its that simple. 4k resolution with no DNR as God Intended > HDR digital manipulation post processing.
>>
>>744547728
OLED is fine. If you were smart enough to make the most of OLED, you'd know what to do without OLED well enough to make it not worth purchasing. Don't bother OP. Just get 1 or less ms response time display, HDR is a scam. That's everything you need to know
>>
>>744550826
I swear projectors are for poorfags larpers or for people with actual money for a real home theater. You aren't the latter. Don't event talk to me unless you have a LCoS, 3LCD, a 3 chip DLP. Everything else is shit tier.
>>
>>744550993
You don't have to have DNR to have HDR. A transfer from an analog source can absolutely be mastered for HDR and look much better for it. I just watched my 4K Blade Runner disc with HDR yesterday, and it looked utterly phenomenal with a shit ton of film grain to boot. I doubt the creatives involved with Lawrence of Arabia and Blade Runner were thinking about OLED panels either, so why aren't you spooling up the original film reels when you view them? You're being very silly with this puritanical nonsense.
>>
>>744550993

>is it that much of a game changer
yeah, they're pretty nice.
>worth the price
1440p 240hz OLEDs are like $300 off sale now, so yeah. really no reason to not just upgrade unless you want to wait another year for them to be ~$200
>>
No. A custom colour profile will do a good enough job. Getting a screen that has burn in makes spending a lot of money on a scree on a bad idea.

Micro LED might solve it, it's said to, that could be a lie. MicroLED are made now, just at high prices of $50,000 to $200,000. Also the concept of using multiple screens to build a large one might take off with them. And if so, the same screen available for a long time. A led screen can't be expected to last without burn in for more than a few months. One for a lifetime is not possible. They tech is defective, even intentionally offered knowing it's defects in order for people to buy new screens.
>>
>>744547728
>game changer
Plasma did perfect blacks 30 years ago.
AND they don't have any motion blur....
But you all went and bought LCD's for some retarded reason.

OLED is a joke. Calling it a game changer when it doesn't even match tech from 3 decades ago is the height of stupidity.
>>
>>744554223
I still have a ZT60 and Plasma is not better than OLED. Plasma blacks weren't perfect and they also have phosphor trails. Not to mention burn in was never solved and was much worse than what OLEDs are now.
>>
Only combined with strobing aka black frame insertion aka pulsar.
Otherwise you won't get to see the perfect response times in the first place.
oled TVs are amazing. For desktop eh, they're the best, but maybe not worth the hassle.
If you can buy only a single display they forget it. monitor + TV is the best and there's no way you will burn in if you leave the oled for only gaming and stuff
>>
What is it about burn in specifically that seems to mind break so many people in here?

Doesn't seem to be such a massive deal to me that my monitor is going to last 7 years instead of 9 (which is what my last IPS lasted). In fact, 7 years of a much better monitor seems like a better deal to me compared to 9 years of a much worse one. I'm not getting those 7 or 9 years back. I'd rather enjoy them on higher quality instead of saving a few extra bucks. I can make money back, I can't reroll the time I spent on something of lower quality.
>>
I got one and it's really nice until there's a black loading screen and the blacks are so deep it reflects my pale ass titties in perfect HD back to me, reminding me of the worthlessness of my existence.

Then the game loads and I' fully immersed again. It's a roller coaster
>>
>>744554929
Should have gotten matte instead of glossy.
>>
>>744547728
Only on games that actually support HDR and do a good implementation of it. Even then you have to use RenoDX to fix some of those native implementations like fixing the black floor.
Injecting HDR into SDR games is where the improvements are more incremental in what you'll notice. I'm more speaking about HDR rather than whether OLED is a game changer. It's arguably alright for SDR and you'll get some benefits with things like being able to get deeper blacks i suppose and the actual response times will be the main draw.
>>
>>744547728
I love mine personally, but I almost wish that I had gotten a 4k one
>>
>>744547728
yep. i don't even care about burn-in anymore, if this shit breaks i'll just get another one. i think that explains well enough how much of an upgrade it is
>>
>>744553745
microled is not even close to being ready for mass production. the manufacturing process is extremely long and expensive, the pixel density is shit, and there's reliability/longevity issues worse than OLED associated with them at the moment. I would not expect to see widespread consumer (affordable) microLED any time before 2035 minimum
>>
OLED is just the best way to experience HDR. Walking along dim caves and city streets, with candles and lanterns popping out of the screen. It's hard to describe why it's so good, the picture is just so deep set and tactile from the combination of perfect black and glossy finish. Having no black floor or inherent underglow makes everything look rich and physical, almost 3D. They are less convincing in bright broad daylight scenes overall, but even then, newer tandem models can hold 360 nits full screen white, and 800+ nits at around 25%.
>>
what means a monitor has proper OLED or proper HDR support? I see everything these days claims to have it but I'm pretty doubtful
>>
>>744553745
>A led screen can't be expected to last without burn in for more than a few months.
People really fucking need to stop parroting this kind of stupid ass shit. Even the stress tests done specifically to get burn-in that are nowhere near anyone's use case don't result in burn-in after a few months.

Actually you know what? If you want to believe it keep going and enjoy years of horrible IPS (I've been there) or shitty cheap chink mini-led's, it's what you get for being retarded.
>>
>>744559082
>OLED is just the best way to experience HDR.
It's my understanding that even if it is OLED, unless it has 500 or 600 nits+ then HDR wouldn't work that well. Most of the more budget options I've looked into are at like 300.
>>
>>744560907
Yeah a decent quality OLED is going to be $600 at least. That's not a great deal of money for a monitor IMO, I have a 27" Asus XG27AQWMG. I remember when we got our first flat screen widescreen LCD as a kid around 2004 and it looked massive, felt like having a cinema in the living room. My monitor is the size of that, and cost me less, even less still accounting for inflation. People pay that much for their phones.

If money really is tight for you though rather than just being overly frugal with it, you could go as low as $350 for the Alienware AW2726DM. That monitor can hit 400 nits in a 25% window, probably more in a smaller window. You would still get really good contrast compared to a typical IPS display since the black floor is infinite. There are a few others around that price for similar specs.
>>
>>744560907
>It's my understanding that even if it is OLED, unless it has 500 or 600 nits+ then HDR wouldn't work that well.
your understanding is wrong
99.9% of OLED screens can do what he's describing (dark scenes with extremely bright (1000+ nit) small highlights)
the 300 nit figure is literally for a full white screen. its a non issue

>>
>>744562289

Oh, fuck yeah it's worth it. Picked one up a few months ago and every game has looked kickass on this bitch. RE9 looked amazing. I notice things look a lot more clear in motion and there's zero ghosting.

>>
>>744562093
To go a little bit off track here, I really just dislike big screens for my monitor. For tv's, it's cool. But for monitor, 27 is pushing the limit of how far I'm willing to go. Anything beyond 27 I really would not like to have at all. Maybe that's why they start curving those bitches.

>>744551823
>so why aren't you spooling up the original film reels when you view them?
Because I'm already watching them on my projector.
>>
>>744551834
And yet no cinema in 120 years has displayed those films with HDR. IMAX is just BARELY setting up HDR theaters with Laser projectors. It almost as if.... HDR is a fucking scam.
>>
>>744554223
Plasma was discontinued because LCD was cheaper to export from the Chinese sweatshops. Its also retarded that OLED panels for years were literally made only by LG so if you bought a Sony or Samsung you were just paying for the name. I only experienced a Plasma once at a friends house and I popped in a black and white movie on DVD on his Blu-ray player and it looked like HD.
>>
>>744554830
Because your OLED is not going to last 7 years. These things are meant to be used for 3-4 years and then replace them with the latest OLED. At least that's how TV manufacturers are working towards because the smart app shit becomes discontinued and apps become unsupported.
>>
>>744564348
More realistically in 2026 I would give it between 5 and 6. For monitors. I don't know what's going on for TV's.
>>
>>744559595
OLED is a type of panel technology where every pixel is self illuminated. Meaning every pixel turns on or off. LCDs are back lit by several lights that turn on and off groups of pixels. So if a game has HDR where a 4 pixel wide light shines brightly it will make those 4 pixels glow, while on an LCD multiple pixels around those 4 pixels will also glow.

HDR is basically post processing that lets the panel do highlights and shadows dedicated to the rest of the image while retaining color. Like imagine a red light, if you add more brightness it becomes washed out and pink. But a good panel can make that red light become a BRIGHT red that glows. ANY panel can do HDR, but it's only OLEDs with high brightness (NITs) capabilities that can actually showcase it properly. And you need to be in a dark room, beucase most OLEDs are not as bright as LCDs. Like the Switch 2 screen is LCD with wide color gamut and it does HDR.
>>

All the oled cocksuckers I've seen have admitted they'll replace their screen every 2 years. When I was young a 20 year old television was still working just fine.

I have a monitor that is 7 years old now, about as good as the day I bought it and will probably last me another 7 because I refuse to buy this gay OLED shit that is bad for text and demands twelve kinds of babying just to get me into the planned-obsolescence cycle of constantly buying new shit like a retard. I refuse to spend car-level quantities of money on technology over a decade, it's insane how much fucking garbage I'm expected to have now. Fuck your smart TVs, fuck your OLED shit that has a half life for quality that can be measured in single digit years.

I don't know if I need 480, but it seems like some games do benefit from having the extra space. I know when I use DLSS it's really smooth, but I don't overdo it. Usually 2x at most.
>>
>>744547728
As a modern display? Yeah. It eliminates a significant amount of input delay but not entirely. It also has the drawback of burn in.
>>
>>744564997
Explain to me why the biggest fanboy faggots of your shit say it is "bad for text" and "blurry". I am not a 2 year old. Is that true? Is 200 fps on a 240hz monitor worse than 200 fps on a 480hz monitor?
>>
>>744565025
I feel like you'd have to be trying to get burn in. I have a bad habit of just sitting on the desktop not doing anything and spacing out or walking off and letting it sit for a while and so far no issues. They have some preventative measures built into the screen to combat that. I think one says it shifts the pixels slightly every so often and you don't even notice it. Then it "cleans" itself when you shut down. I made the mistake of wiping the screen down during the cleaning process and it had streaks all over it. Thought I fucked it up, ran the cleaner again and it was good as new. I think this shit will last a long time, but I'm not on it 5-8 hours a day, either.

A lot of monitors are shipping out with 4 year burn in guarantee nowadays, and since they obviously don't want to waste money replacing shit for everyone, you can assume they're pretty confident there won't be much, if any, before 4 years.

If you look around, you do see reports of people at 6 or 7 that still don't have any. This really feels like a situation in which the technology is advancing while /v/ is still stuck using the same arguments as 10 years ago. >>744564847

The good part about HDR injection tools like RTX HDR is that i can turn a lot of relatively older games from SDR into HDR and makes a big difference in non supported games. But there's a limit i would say on how far you can go with it. Only later 7th gen games most likely before it starts going past what a lot of developers intended since they were designing their games intentionally in SDR spaces for a while and bending the rules too much goes past the intended presentation.
But it's certainly a game changer for a lot of things. It can transform your experiences of games that you like: even if you hate newer games.

I don't know exactly whether OLED is the factor that changes anything though. I haven't seen the other display tech. And seeing the other display tech on actual HDR supported titles is why i can't comment on how big the differences are. I don't know much about whether the panel type is a big deal on games with good native implementations essentially.

>>744565348
Why the fuck would I want two screens? I don't need some weirdo faggot setup where I can't use my desk for other shit. One big screen >>>>>>> your dumbass smaller games only screen and regular shit screen. I know how alt+tab works, unlike zoomer retards.

On top of that, what kind of nigger do you think I am that none of my games have text in them?

there's a difference but you have to ask yourself if its really worth paying more for such a difference
>>
>>744565375
I initially didn't want an OLED because there was so much talk about burn in and stuff and everybody made it sound like it was a big chore to have one. Kinda think maybe it was a blown a bit out of proportion. I don't have to perform any dark rituals to maintain it. It's just another monitor except it looks better far as I can tell.
>>
>>744565603
I guess so in regards to windows 11.

I just used it for Batman Arkham Asylum recently and it looks great in some of those older games like that. Pretty flexible in a lot of stuff.
>>
>>744565671
For a goon cave of course. NTA but I used my old IPS as a second screen next to my OLED but after seeing no negative effects for 3 years and 14,000 hours I'm going to just replace it with another OLED that I used as a TV. Yeah my IPS has lasted me over 10 years but it's not nearly as nice to use and I can afford a better screen so why the fuck not.

Yes. Compared to my old monitor which was a 10yo IPS.
>or at least worth the price?
Depends since OLEDs are like GPUs where the actual part that matters is produced by 2 or 3 companies and there are different generations of matrices which burn out sooner or later anecdotal evidence is that it either will burn out completely in days or will work with no issues for years. I have bought a 27" samsung 3rd gen and have no complaints.

There's no fucking way I'd have any regrets over that shit. I just got a 5070 Ti for $900, would have loved to get it at $750.
I'm just extremely happy I upgraded to 32 GB of RAM like four years ago, just for the fuck of it because it was dirt cheap. Never thought RAM of all things would skyrocket, used to be something you barely even consider in the PC budget.

I wouldn't want to hang onto a monitor for 10 years. At some point, some new hotness will show up and make me want to upgrade anyway. Right now, seems like the next big thing is cramming AI into monitors, which seems to me like we're about to hit a plateau and the high quality shit that's expensive now will be normal for entry level units, so upgrading/replacing could be cheaper. i had a new $200 IPS monitor that would have probably cost way more 10 years ago and it was perfectly serviceable for gaming in 2025.

The early batches of the Tandem Giga/Asus/wahtever models had issues caused by LG, theyve since refined them so theres almost no banding on the 2026 models (from March and beyond) after the first pixel clean (the monitor prompts you on first boot) takes 3 min then you can use it as normal. I have the XG27AQWMG, it has none unless I massively overexpose by increasing shutter length on my phones camera. I run it at 22/100 brightness in SDR and 100 in HDR (brightness adjustable enabled) great monitor so far. Runs pixelclean automatically when in standby or turned off. I have prompts off. Make sure to disable the retarded OUTER dimming setting unless you enjoy a vignette.

what does this mean
>>
>>744568860
The monitors have settings to prevent burn in. One of those is called Screen Dimming which will dim the screen when static content is displayed for longer times.
The other is called Outer Dimming which dims the sides of the screen, like a vignette, which means the entire screen becomes much dimmer at all times, this one, disable it, never turn it on unless you want everything thtat isnt dead center to be dim as shit. Can keep the various other features enabled like Logo dimming.

No they are dogshit unless you live at a cave with zero light leaking to to your room, there is also issue with how dim they are both in SDR and HDR, garbage white color and everything is washed out at normal conditions during the day/night, wiped don't fix anything as you want glossy finish and it will have inferior colors to qdoled anyway, vrr flicker, burn in will always happen and only casuals could say it won't happen, text fringing plus purple tint is still bad unless you buy newest expensive oleds, grey plus vertical banding/raised black levels, automatoc screen dimming when scene is too bright. Sorry but they are garbage experimental products atm maybe in five years they will remove all those issues while I will stick to Miniled ips.

>lil bro is playing his DOS games still
stutter is when content looks noticeably less smooth due to the lack of any natural motion blur from the instant response times of OLED. A 24p movie, or low framerate game, can be a worse experience than LCD without any motion handling like interpolation. I used to be very anti motion smoothing on TVs until I got an OLED.

>>
>>744569518
You might be overthinking it. There really isn't much to it. You don't really have to do anything special. On one like I have, it "cleans" the image when you're already shutting down, then it turns itself off shortly after. You'll have settings in the monitor itself for preventing damage, most likely and it's not even complicated at all. If you're already in there tweaking your settings for your picture, it takes just a few extra minutes to go over them and see what's what. Hook it up, do whatever you're doing, turn your PC off, rinse and repeat. There's nothing too intense going on with these things. You can pretty much do your normal thing.
>>
>>744569737
Quit lying, there are literal tutorials here on 4chan on how to get your Miniled, even the very best models btw, to run "properly" with local dimming enabled and thats to run them in HDR 24/7 even at the desktop, but the caveat is you still get INVERSE Blooming or regular BLOOMING around bright things against dark backgrounds.

Am I supposed to care your poor ass doesn't have a Dolby theater near them? I've been going to my local one since 2015. Also doesn't even matter since projected film always had a higher dynamic range than SDR digital so whatever nonsense about nothing being designed for HDR is horseshit. The biggest thing about HDR is getting a clean roll off like film does instead of the hard clamps SDR had. It was a shitty limitation from the very start since film was always better and the first digital projections and digital shot films were always a downgrade.

You're talking about digital filmmaking. I'm talking about real cinema. When home video started guess what gamut they were using? Guess what gamut was the intention of the filmmaker. And guess why when we switched to HD SUDDENLY several transfers had fucked up colors that would eventually be corrected with 4k UHD releases.
>>
>>744570054
Better image/color is from the massive file sizes of movies we have now. Watch 4k rescan put on a Blu-ray and it still looks fucking amazing. HDR is only for shadow and highlight gimmicks. Yes, it's for making sure colors stay colors while fucking up highlights and shadows. But none of that shit was what the original filmmakers cared about. It wasnt their focus. HDR is a digital post processing. It requires the hardware to process extra data besides the film and sound. Its like a third layer of data. That shit is artificial. Yeah there is a High Dynamic Range in physical film, but it was never meant to be used outside of the color correcting process while in post production. Meaning in the cinema it wasn't supposed to be supported and on a broadcast it wasn't supposed to be supported and on a home video it wasn't supposed to be supported. Its like the software trickery of motion smoothing/frame interpolation.

The main benefit of OLED is that it absolutely skullfucks competing tech in darker scenes, especially IPS will just lose all near-black detail due to the background glow and night scenes look like crap on them due to that. Doesn’t matter whether we’re talking HDR or not, the difference is massive either way and going back is nearly impossible after seeing how OLED handles those scenes.

Regarding burn-in, it’s a complete non-issue regarding varied TV and gaming use. I had LG OLED from 2016, used it for 7 years almost daily before donating it to my parents due to getting a larger one, and it’s still going strong there with no burn-in. And modern panels should be even more resilient to burn-in. With monitor desktop use, I’d probably be a bit more careful, but I wouldn’t worry a bit about game UIs.

Yeah, I have a LG OLED TV from 2019, zero burn-in. I don't think it can happen if you just use it "normally". Don't leave it on the same screen for days, turn off the TV regularly, etc...
Now I'm using a laptop with an OLED screen and I'm being a bit more careful with taskbars and shit. But it's totally worth it.

It's not. You are just refusing to read and understand what I actually wrote. I literally said that if you play for 16 hours every day and you play the same game, you're going to see burn in. This is literally an undeniable fact.
>even if they did only last 2 years I'd just replace it every 2 years.
Why even bring this up? No one gives a fuck. We are arguing whether burn in happens or not. Your point about cost literally has no validity in this argument, because it doesn't fucking matter to the discussion at hand. You are 100% brown.
>>
>>744577581

Your facts are wrong. Poorfag

Even if you consider that OLEDs will feature noticeable burn-in within the first two years, it'll still look better than the out of the box horrid backlighting of an IPS monitor.
You'll need like 5 years+ of burn in to match the horrible quality of an IPS.

why does it work that way in menus but not in gameplay
what is the downside of setting a higher hz monitor to lower hz

If this applies to me, it also applies to everyone who uses their monitors for purposes other than pure entertainment.
PC monitors have other functions besides making Netflix shows look better.

It's a difficult topic. I have a 45" ultra wide oled from LG since mid 2023 over 10k hours of use.
It look nice but most games don't take oled into consideration while making the games. Some stuff supposed to be black are not, it's sometimes too dark or not dark enough.
Most oled displays are not made to display text, you need to run clear type and the result is not perfect.
Oled anxiety is a thing you have it or not. If you have it don't get one it will be suffering.
Also those monitors are higher maintenance compared to a regular monitor, you can't unplug them out of the blue, some have fans built in.
LG is currently rolling out bloat ware through windows update...

Overall I would say if you use your computer a lot (over 30h a week), have the cash for it, go for it. It shouldn't be a purchase that bleeds you, you are getting something with a shorter lifespan and still in the early adoption.

I really don't like the idea that OLEDs are by the very nature of their underlying technology going to be obsolescent. These are almost irrelevant problems, because one of them can be easily fixed (capacitors), one is very rare (backlight failure) and the dead pixels aren't really much of an issue if they aren't factory defect.
I have a 24 year old LCD monitor I use daily (that one has CCFL backlight tho) and it had many dead pixels on it from being so old. All I had to do is massage them a bit and all the dead pixels (that I found anyway) started working again.

Holding onto something that was never good even when new is not smart or financially prudent.
If you're going to make that argument you should have switched to a cheap LED backlit monitor ages ago and saved a few $ on electricity by now.
>>
It's really good, but the monitor space is advancing really rapidly. I bought my 1440p OLED in 2023 for $1100 and I'm now planning to buy my next 4K OLED monitor for $1200 while my old monitor has halved in price. I would suggest getting a $500 OLED which are plentiful now, but do your research as modern 1440p tandem OLEDs have had banding issues. They are being rectified with things like RGB-Stripe, but those aren't available just yet. Just another indicator of how in motion the whole field is.
>>
>>744568670
It's not an early batch thing. It's a feature of WRGB layout that LG uses for its tandem WOLEDs and isn't going away. RGB Stripe fixes this but has visible green shift at pure white and grey screens. Granted, that shift is much more subtle than the ridiculous banding and dirty screen WRGB tandems have.
>>
>>744583052
Wild destitute build, I'm sure. Is your floor dirt?
>>
>>744585193
That monitor was fine when it was new, also expensive. over 2000 USD in 2002. Yeah, it's pretty bad compared to a modern wide gamut monitor, specially when it comes to the speed since early IPS is really slow. It does very good at displaying yt and other things I don't need on my main monitor though. I don't need to save money on electricity.
Also OLED would be a better choice for saving electricity than a LED backlit monitor since I use that monitor in dark mode all the time.
Too bad an OLED monitor would burn in 1 year if I subjected it to the same level of abuse.
Replacing this with a brand new IPS monitor would cost about 860 USD right now. I'll do it if it stops working.
>>
>>744586193
>Replacing this with a brand new IPS monitor would cost about 860 USD right now
Anon what are you talking about? You can buy 4k/120 Hz IPS monitors for under $300. If you're going to look me in the eye and say that your 2002 LCD tricycle is better then I suggest spending money on meds or a pair of very good glasses instead.

>>744573812
Real cinema isn't REC709 you dumbass and home video isn't fucking cinema except for nutcases like Lars Von Trier or Danny Boyle but even those retards that shot on DV have shot with a full HDR workflows today. The film industry created DCI-P3, which is what the majority of HDR is, because REC709 didn't cover what film could create. They've been using what we call HDR for 20 years now which was 5 years after the first digital intermediates were made for film. Before that they cut the film straight with moviolas and those prints you saw in the theater had a wider dynamic range than SDR.

>>744573965
HDR is a standard not some post process. Film highlights and roll offs are absolutely what the DP intended when they composed the film and SDR clips these roll offs. Filmmakers have always shot and graded for the theater and then a home grade might have been done after that. When you watch HDR today that is closer to what the DP originally intended for the theater.

>over 2000 USD in 2002
LCDs were very expensive in the first place, unless it has a polarising filter to mitigate IPS glow it has zero advantages over the cheapest modern IPS you can get now. Ghosting sucks, low resolutions and refresh rates suck.
I did try switching to an LCD in 2006, then I saw what it looked like at night, felt the input lag and choppiness of 75Hz and returned it to the store the next day.
Ended up sticking to my high-end CRT until 2012 when it became impractical to keep a 30kg monitor on my desk in the apartment I was living in.

>>
>>744581946
Make it last as long as an lcd backlight failing or losing brightness? I think they can if it isn't already, it's a matter of heat management and stronger material. There's a reason why Oleds are now brighter. Tandems stacks are a big deal they should be x2 more durable than standard woleds, the organic materials themselves have been chemically upgraded, MLA gets more brightness for the same output, etc
>>
>>744587774
I don't really care about a CRT performance. The last CRT I owned was around 2004 and it was some large Sony Trinitron 21". It was supposedly one of the best CRTs you could buy and it was shit
>>
>>744587463
When I said I don't have room I mean my desk is placed in a way where I can't fit something that large on it. I'm not moving my desk to a different location for a boat anchor nor buying a new desk to move my computer somewhere else for that matter. CRTs are awful.

>My brother in luddite my 445 Pro reached 180 Hz with motion clarity comparable to a 480 Hz OLED.
I'm sure it did.
>>
>>744587929
they do refresh 180hz. But that's with severe image degradation/noise and running 400x360p
>>
>>744581587
Depends on what specific brightness value it is asking for - 265 suggests fullscreen brightness (as about 250nits~ is what most monitors do). If it is asking for peak value that is way too low.

Those specs only.

>>744588012
Yeah that's the problem usually, 85Hz usually results in a pretty decent resolution but getting a good resolution requires going below 85Hz. Doesn't matter though, I don't think you can buy any decent brand new CRTs at this point. They aren't being made.
>>
>>744587764
480p as it can't display anything below that and 180 VHz is out of spec, it's supposed to cap at 165 Hz but will actually accept any VHz you feed it within dot frequency. I usually kept it between 1800x1440p 80Hz and 1440x1080p 120Hz for desktop and everything old or emulated was at said 480p/180. The connector was Displayport to VGA.

This. RGB Stripe tandems are coming out this autumn/winter so it's better to wait if you want explicitly a tandem WOLED panel. Get QD-OLED unless the text fringing gives you a meltdown or just wait (tm).

>oh no, it has faint imperfections in laboratory test scenarios
You will literally never, ever see a grey banding issue while playing a video game or watching a movie unless you walk up to a grey wall and stare at it on purpose in order to reproduce the issue.

>>744588536
All decent OLEDs from reputable manufacturers have anti-burn features, pixel refresh, logo detection, and proximity sensors. Budget panels from tertiary brands may not have these but any proper monitor from the past couple of years is going to have them.

I still have a 2008 full HD Panasonic Plasma, I quite like it. But I recently got a cheap 180hz IPS monitor and the refresh rate makes a bigger difference to me than the Plasma's picture qualities like high dynamic resolution, good blacks and stuff like that.
Even for movies I switched to using the monitor because I can run it at 144hz and no longer get any camera pan stutter that I would for watching 24fps content on a 60hz screen.
The freedom you have in getting smooth content at any refresh rate on a gsync display far outweights anything else to me. Haven't turned on my Plasma since getting this monitor.
The color calibration that came out of the box was complete fucking garbage, however. I was afraid it would be unusable to me before spending a long time calibrating, didn't think it even could look good, but it ended up close enough to what I'm used to from the Plasma.

you need
>BFI/ELMB to remove sample and hold motion blur
>no DSC unless you have the rtx5000s (even then I don't recommend using DSC except for 240hz+ where that's unavoidable at higher res)
>No QD Oleds because they burn in faster and have fake blacks, except the latest gen but I'm still not sure

Here's a rough list
>Gigabyte AORUS FO27Q3 (or MO27Q28G)
>ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDP / PG27AQWP
>Sony InZone M10S II
>TCL M27H36B (or 27X3B)

I didn't check these 16:9 models too much myself because I'm focused on ultrawides (so I'm looking at ROG Swift OLED PG34WCDM or PG34WCDN personally) but fuck any gaming focused display that don't have a BFI option and fuck DSC as well (increase input lag in certain cases and can introduce microstutter, so stick with DSC off unless you're running a res and refresh rate that not even the true DP2.1 bandwith can't handle)

Plasma was notoriously power hungry, everything else is a massive improvement.
Also 120Hz is better than 144Hz since it's divisible by 24, 30 and 60 which are the most common frame rates for video, you're not going to see much of a difference in games going from 120 to 144 anyway.

I just set MPC to switch it depending on the video's framerate. For general use I like to keep it at 180 because even though it's true that for most games past 120 it doesn't really matter that much, for rhythm games specifically I feel like it's worth it, and I like playing those.
Even FPS I don't really care much past 120, but the constant scrolling of rhythm games really benefits.
Well, more like 171 than 180 so it stays in gsync range always and keeps input lag to a minimum, but yeah.

>in SDR
...means nothing as the upper limit of brightness in SDR mode is what all of the subpixels can reach. What matters is when HDR is in use and the screen goes bright does volumetric collapse come into play which is why you can have a woled outputting more light than a qdoled but is not perceptually brighter. Problem is understanding this is getting into the weeds of how these displays work and isn't an easy number to slap on the box.

This is why statements of "oled doesn't get bright" is a critical misunderstanding of the difference between how manufacturer numbers are reached and how people actually perceive a displayed image.

12vhpwr is a much shittier cable with much lower safety standards
i'll start with its benefits
it takes less space for the amount of power it delivers
that's it, it was made entirely so nvidia's faggoty founders editions look better

now for the drawbacks
atx 8 pin is made of 3 wires that each transfer 50w, 150w total
the entire connector and wires rated for 250w
that means that even if one of those 3 wires fails it's still within spec
if 2 fail then you're delivering 150w through a wire that was rated for 83w, it could cause a problem but it won't be disastrous

meanwhile 12vhpwr is made of just 6 pins and the connector is rated for 684w, 114w per wire
if one of them fails then you're immediately going over the rating and that can cause a cascade of failures
1 wire gets unseated and you're immediately pumping 125w through a wire rated for 114w

the 8 pin is also much safer because the plug is better engineered, it's robust as shit and the lower wattage delivered by those cables is way more forgiving
>>

The pins on 12VHPWR are notably smaller than 8 pin PCI-E connector too. Smaller pins, more current per pin, more current per wire. It's just bad in so many ways. You'd unironically be better off delivering 600W through 2 8 pin PCI-E connectors than you would be delivering 600W through a single 12VHPWR and the former is massively out of spec.

if it's out of spec then why does the Nvidia RMA chart only occur in spikes after new GPU launches? Surely it'd be a steady flow of failing GPUs.

10 bit, but doesnt matter.
Its a panel defect.
Do you have qd oled?
Seems more like an issue with LG panels

???
No, banding is visible regardless of the content in grey images
Not talking about color banding in media, different phenomenon
Its not bad on my panel, but noticable if you look for it

I have LG panel. It's got perfect banding.

You should tell us what model you have and if you have the latest firmware or not and I mean firmware not whatever windows installs for you.
Asus XG27AQWMG has a firmware, MCM107 that reduces gray issues a bit. But that model from march 2026, doesnt really have banding issues on gray after the first clean.

It doesn't bother me remotely. I have an Asus panel so it's not exclusive to LG. When I first noticed it in dark theme websites I thought "oh, that sucks I guess" and that's as much thought as I ever gave it. Because I bought it to play games, not to admire how pretty and uniform grey backgrounds in apps look, and games look exceptional on it.

I said that 2x8 pin PCI-E providing 600W is out of spec.
Each 8 pin PCI-E connector and cable is rated for 150W. 12.5A at 12V. That means the maximum 2 of them can deliver in spec is 300W.
600W would not be out of spec for 12VHPWR connector, even though in theory that connector has lower power limit with the same safety margin as 2x8 pin because it has more amps per pin (2x), more amps per wire (2x) and smaller pins.
If you don't understand what that means, it means that the 8 pin PCI-E connector has a very large safety margin, while the 12VHPWR connector has razor thin safety margin. If you pulled 300W from a 8 pin PCI-E connector, even though it's only rated for 150W you'd be about as fine as you are if you pull 600W from a 12VHPWR.

It's not exactly surprising that there are failures with 12VHPWR. It should be a 300W connector.
>>
>>744597580
That's a flat color. It would actually be imperceptible on a gradient.

It is a legitimate issue, not fear mongering. I game in bed on my laptop's OLED panel, and I could see my face like a mirror with any amount of ambient light in the room. Even the light from the screen itself was enough to reflect off the magnolia walls behind me and lift the black levels. I covered the wall behind me in black foam acoustic tiles and now with the blinds closed, I can only see a faint smudge where my face should be, even on a bright sunny day, because there is not as much light bouncing around to illuminate it. The difference is humongous. So it depends entirely on your room setup.

Normal people with one or two monitors aren’t “using them for work” for 18 hours a day—or even eight. And even if someone works eight hours a day, that still leaves roughly ten hours for gaming, movies, browsing, and other non-work use. So why the fuck would eight hours of office work be treated as the only use case that matters?

If you need a display showing the same static content for 18 hours straight, buy an industrial monitor. Consumer monitors are general-purpose products, and for most people, entertainment and other non-work use outweigh office work by a mile.
